The Pink Report: Where do you fall?

The Pink Report: Where do you fall?

Recently, I saw an overview/teaser of The Pink Report, which is a study of Women & Walmart as Beauty and Personal Care consumers. It seems like an interesting study, if the teaser is any indication, though as a mere beauty blogger, $1500 for the full study is out of my budget!

I thought I would share with you the part that was the most surprising to me–both as a beauty enthusiast, as well as looking at my so un-beauty aware family members–that 22% of women in the study spent under $50 a year on annual beauty spending of color and facial skin care.  I guess I am still continually surprised that more women (and people in general) don’t have to stick to meticulous skincare regimens (just thinking SPF and cleanser, even).  I wish I could be one of those people who didn’t have to do anything to their skin!  (My parents are both examples of those people!)

I know where I fall.  I think even when I first got into beauty, I was there–cleanser, toner, makeup remover, SPF, and a night cream can really add up, even if you buy affordable products, on an annual basis.

Do you get your beauty on at Walmart?  Where do you fall?

I agree with you, even affordable skin care lines, using numerous products, adds up. THEN I got interested in makeup! So I’m pretty certain I fall in the 2nd to last category at least. I do go to Walmart for my drugstore makeup products, since it is right around the corner from me.

JayJay Avatar

I know right! I used to use Neutrogena, or Garnier skincare, and I could drop $100 easily if I had to replenish everything all at the same time.

I’ve bought kits from QVC or HSN for a good price. Now I’m using Clinique, and the basic items really aren’t that much more than drugstore items. It’s the specialty creams that they charge the big bucks for.

LaDonna Avatar

I know I should do MORE for my skin but I would say I fall between the 51-100 and 100-150 a year. Last year I bought some Clinique stuff for my skin so it was higher… but this year I haven’t bought much more than drugstore stuff.

Natalia Avatar

I totally agree. Even one walmart lipgloss a month over a year will put you over the 50 dollar per year mark. Its a good month if I spend 50 a month on beauty to be honest. Its the one thing I splurge on that makes me happy!

daphne Avatar

Oyyy. With the amount of makeup I buy, I probably spend $500ish a year on color and skincare. Well, since I started buying makeup less than 2 years ago 😛 This year will probably be a lot less than last year, so maybe it’ll even out over time since my stash is so huge now!

starr Avatar

i think i fall between the $150-300. I dont wear makeup but i sometimes just buy things that are pretty from mac collections. along with my excessive use of sunscreen and lotion (i have really dry skin) and special soaps i easily fit into that amount :P. I dont go to walmart and so by looking at the prices at sephora you can see how i can spend that much!

Kat Avatar

wow! I wonder what demographic they surveyed though – this might make a huge difference – i.e. Wal-Mart shoppers/moms vs. high end?

I definitely fall into the last category. I wouldn’t think anything of spending $100+ in one Sephora trip alone…

Macaddict Avatar

Totally agree! For me, it’s $300/month! Easily… Just my hairdresser appts alone (every 8 weeks are $250…)
I cannot imagine spending $50-$100/year… I couldn’t honestly do it.
I also don’t shop at Wal-Mart. I buy skincare, haircare, fragrances, makeup, nail polish, etc. If it’s girlie, I buy it!
I don’t want to think of how much I spend annually on all that stuff…

johnfiend Avatar

in the last 14 months ive spent about $9,000AUD.

all mac 😀

i work full time and live at home so im able to spend all my spare money on mac, because i want to be a make up artist.

but thats just on mac. then theres dermalogica and chanel skincare!

ive gotten about 8 back to mac lipsticks now 😀

make up is such an amazing craft and everyone on here is so inspirational ^_^

Melissa Avatar

ummm yeah lol…sometimes in a week when there’s a big launch…uh oh!!! or when I get any type of discounts! ouch!!!

JayJay Avatar

So, I definitely spend $301+ a year. Gah, I spent like $180 yesterday on the new MAC collections. At Walmart though, I would probably say I spend around $100-$200 a year. This is on the random drugstore product I pick up, hair dye, makeup wipes (I swear by garnier’s), and sometimes shampoo + conditioner

Misa Avatar

So a third of women either spend crazy amounts of money on makeup & skincare (me LOL) and another third could care less (well less than the other third of course). I fall into that top third though. I’m half Korean and if anything I was taught to always take care of my skin first, lots of creams, masks & quality makeup. If you did this study in an Asian country I’m certain the results would be drastically different with a much higher percentage of women shelling out tons of money on beauty & skincare. I think there would be differences from state to state even! Mm, I’d be interested to see what their medians were for this survey though. I suspect you’d get different answers in different states in different regions. So many factors LOL

Rachel Avatar

I def. agree with u. Seriously, none of my friends spend less than $300 even some of them don’t wear make-up at all. In Asia, even one decent bottle of whitening essence costs more than $50, and they usually lasts only three months or less…
I thought the figures was measured MONTHLY at first and I even calculated in my head for a while to realize that I spend more than $300 a month…Then….there it is, ANNUAL spending…sigh…

Melissa Avatar

hahah right? they’ve already renewed my membership through December 2011!!!! then they keep sending coupons and free stuff!!! I have to use it!

Thu Avatar

Same here. I just earned my second 500-point perk since I signed up a year or two ago, and it might’ve been my third or fourth had I saved up my points for the first four months. (I don’t know if this survey included tools like brushes, makeup remover, brush cleaner, etc though, because I bought a lot of those too.)

Sally Avatar

Agreed. If this was ONLY at Walmart, I would be in one of the lower categories, since I only buy essentials there – makeup remover, toner, chapstick, etc. No makeup, though. So for my total color/facial skin care spending, I’d definitely be in the last category.

Alyssa Avatar

I think buying those things for the entire year should cost more than $50 annually.

I suppose the study doesn’t include things like lotion and shampoo? Just the vague “color and skin care.” To be honest, I’m a bit jealous of people saving this much. I want to see a budget list.

Amy EM Avatar

They forgot the most important statistic- 86% of women lie about how much they spend on beauty so their spouses/SO don’t find outr 🙂

Alisha in WI Avatar

Do the people that are under $50 wash their faces with a bar of soap and not use any spf or chapstick? I don’t even want to think about how much I spend…I’m sure thousands. But then again, I used to be a Wal-Mart beauty shopper when I was in high school and lived in a small town; there wasn’t much else except K-Mart. But I still think I still spent a couple hundred a year. Even though it’s Wal-Mart, it really adds up! I still think there are some really good finds there though.

Alisha in WI Avatar

P.S. I hope my husband doesn’t get ahold of this survey! I get hassled but as far as I’m concerned, a brand new truck and its payment are equivalent to my beauty spending! I’m only 25 and it’s only going to get worse when I “need” all the special wrinkle creams…lol!

Suji Avatar

Considering that I recently renewed my Sephora V.I.B. status, I definitely spend WAY beyond the highest level on this report… oops?

nikki Avatar

i fall inti the $301+ category
I’m such a sucker for new products, false promises, and cute packaging
I usually shop at cvs for some of my skincare or from my facialist lady
I buy cosmetics from sephora, mac, Chanel, or other counters at nordstrom

Katie Avatar

I definitely fall into the $301+ range. I say, some people smoke crack, some people know their bartenders a little too well, a few gamble, and I collect makeup! I love my makeup very much!

Milessa Avatar

I rarely shop at Walmart. Honestly, if you compare some of the drug store products to department store products, the drug store prices are getting higher and higher. Why waste the money on drug store, when you can put a few dollars more and get department store. Well thats how I think about it. So I most definitely fall into the last category on this list. Just my thoughts on this…

Katie Avatar

I agree! Drug store cosmetic lines like Loreal and Maybelline are trying to market their products to be more like high-end brands and they’re prices are really going up. I’ve seen a Loreal mascara that’s $9, while MAC mascaras are $13. I don’t see much difference in price.

Tracy Avatar

I work at Sephora, and I am continually amazed at how many women don’t take care of their skin, so actually this news piece doesn’t surprise me. You don’t have to buy high end products to take of your skin either-there’s a lot of great stuff at drugstores or Walmart these days. I’ve been taking care of my skin since a teen and at 43 I still get carded for a beer!

MArlene Avatar

omg im with you christine, not sure how ppl do it. I know i sometimes may over spend on things i dont need but like you mentioned just the essential will cost you more than that and to replenish them will most likely to triple if anything. i spend about $500 or more a year and thats only bc im still building my collection for my profession.

meghan Avatar

This is shocking! Even when I only purchased drugstore makeup and skincare it was more then $50 a year, about $150. Now that I’ve gotten into high end makeup and skincare I’d say I’m probably in the 4th or 5th category. I only started buying higher end products in January so I can’t gauge my spending completely accurately. Any time I buy drugstore makeup it comes from Walmart usually. It is cheaper there! I buy Pond’s makeup remover wipes and they are 2 dollars less at walmart then regular drugstores.

tickles Avatar

I have friends that wash their faces with hand soap and never, never use any kind of cream or lotions, of course soap and water take off the make up… And I can spend 300$ in a month!!!

Carrie Avatar

I have to think that these women are not being realistic with how much they spend annually. Even women who rarely wear cosmetics would still spend more than that on skin care alone. Even if they do shop @ Walmart, drugstores, etc… I often spend more than $300 a month on products. Last week I received my newest Mario Badescu skin care order. This week I should be getting my Haute & Naughty mascara from MAC & the UD Naked palette from Sephora. Can’t wait!!!

Carolina Avatar

This report is a little weird for me. First, what do they mean “color”? Make up? Hair coloring? What?
Like you Christine, I’m also absolutely amazed that 22% spend less than $50 PER YEAR. I would consider that a pretty good statistic for PER MONTH! LOL That being said it obvious in which category I fit in. I don’t wear make up regularly, so my spending is restricted to a product here and there (still 20 euros her a Channel lipstick here, 60 euros for a Escada perfume there), but just my face cream from Darphin counts for 80 or so euros, plus a Darphin Eye cream (another 80 euros a pop), plus all the regular cleansers, exfoliation, SPF, there’s no way I’m not spending less than 150 on my face. And it’s good it’s not including hair care, because then I’m over the 300 euro mark EASY…

Lisa Avatar

I would definitely fall in the $301+ range. Sadly I’ve spent more than that in a month easily (or in just one giddy outing to MAC and Sephora). Don’t judge me lol.

JayJay Avatar

LOL No judgement here, believe me! I had to replenish pretty much all of my skincare yesterday (clinique), and with Alice + Olivia and In The Groove going live, I easily spent over $300.

My husband doesn’t try to stop me. He’s a major enabler.

Michele Avatar

I’m definitely over $300 a year. Way over. I buy cosmetics everywhere and even the more budget conscious brands add up fast. And I don’t even want to think what I’ve spent on MAC collections:-o

Lauryn Avatar

Yikes. WalMart.
I never shop there to begin with. But I do participate in the BeautyFix program, so theres 50$ every 3 months (cha-ching!) and all my makeup for myself and my client kits are MAC (whoa..dizzy just thinkin about the amount of money)..

M. Avatar

Christine, with all due respect your question results in only biased responses. All of these individuals, including myself, are devoted to Temptalia and to beauty in general. Of course we’ll all fall in the higher $ category! Anybody who isn’t interested in makeup/skincare and doesn’t spend much annually probably doesn’t read this blog. I’d be surprised to see if somebody put themselves in the lowest $ category….

Marissa B Avatar

Yeah, I’m not a Walmart shopper. Also, while I love Target – it’s not where I shop for skin, hair, or color products.

Let’s see I think I just spent around $300 on Aromaleigh in the last few months. Spent way more than planned at the To the Beach MAC launch party, will likely spend more than planned on the latest MAC launches too!

Did I mention I have VIB status at Sephora through 12/2011 and earned a free perfume (and then some) at Ulta over the holidays from my hair & makeup shopping.

Wow, I forgot about what I spend at Macy’s and the salon as well – okay so makeup is a bit of a hobby (obsession?) for me. What the heck, it’s so much fun and makes me happy!!

Marta Fernandes Avatar

I spend more than $301 on makeup alone!
It’s hard to believe anybody spends less than $50 a year, but then again things are hard for a lot of people.

Q Avatar

I occasionally buy a Hard Candy item at Walmart, but I don’t care for the business practices of the place and hardly shop there at all. I don’t have a problem with d/s products, I just don’t care for Walmart in particular.

I went from being one of the <$50 spenders (in college, particularly as an undergrad) because I didn't really need much of a skin routine and I wasn't really all that prone to committing acts of makeup on my face. Now, though, I've finished my masters, working on my doctorate, work full time while training for another job I want even more and happily spend well over $300/year on makeup.

Honestly, I'm nearly 31 and really lucky that I have only the finest lines under my eyes and no other wrinkles. I have always worn sunscreen because I'm uberpale and have no sun damage. I'm doing mainly "preventative" care at the moment. I don't mind the idea of smile lines and even crows feet, but I want my skin to be in good shape — not over-dry, not oily, not damaged, etc — and in taking those steps, I've naturally been less likely to wrinkle.

My family has good skin, historically. I had acne as an adolescent and I get the random hormonal outbreak of a spot or two (mostly my chin, honestly), but I really can't complain about my skin. And makeup is kind of my treat to myself for the things I've worked through and done in my life. Makeup, yarn, books and gadgets; I might be a bit addicted. But I figure as long as I'm not selling internal organs or starving myself or my loved ones in order to finance it, it's perfectly okay. ^_^

Jellytea Avatar

There must he some kind of sampling error. Even if someone only Suave shampoo and wet and wild makeup, seems like it would still be more right. Even non girly girls wash their hair and use some type of lotion or sunscreen. Maybe they mean just cosmetics and skin care. Needless to say, I’m a over 300.00 girl. Haircare 1st, skincare 2nd, makeup 3rd. Yep, wayyyy over 300.00.

Margarett Avatar

I spent $50+ dollars today at MAC and I only bought 2 empty palletes, 1 eyeliner, 1 eyeshadow, and some MAC wipes. Then is cost $30 for Shampoo at Ulta. I don’t think I could survive on just those items for an entire year. What are these women buying at WalMart that can last for 1 year?

Just soap to stay clean would cost more than $50 a year for me.

aradhana Avatar

i could have easily fallen into the under $50 category in my teens, but probably not after age 17/18, when i REALLY got into makeup. before that, i only regularly used a bit of pencil liner and mascara and had a very basic skincare regimen (neutrogena cleanser, oil of olay moisturiser and eye cream), and i didn’t (and still don’t) need to repurchase products all that often.

karen Avatar

Well considering that when I hit the VIB at Sephora, it renewed me until December ’11, I’d say I’m beyond the last one there…and that’s just Sephora.

But drugstore wise, I really only buy like mascara there and the occasional eyeshadow (which I ALWAYS regret, I should stop doing that) as well as my Cetaphil.
