Not Quite Travel Friendly: Aveeno Daily Cleansing Pads
Aveeno Postively Ageless Daily Cleansing Pads ($8.99 for 28, $0.32 each) are pre-moistened, dual-sided cleansing pads that are approximately 3″ in diameter. One side is smooth, while the other side is textured to provide gentle exfoliation.
I liked the way these felt on the skin, and the scent was pleasing to me (smelled like Baby Shampoo), though it didn’t linger. I just have some issues about the practicality of this particularly product. Each pad is very, very saturated–I’d almost say overly so–and while it means you’ll get plenty of moisturize and cleanser on your face to clean it, it seems like overkill. It lathers and foams up a little but not excessively, and it does leave skin feeling clean. I experienced a smidgen of tightness, but it was very, very subtle and barely noticeable.
Based on using these for a week or so, I’d recommend cutting the pads in halves or even thirds to maximize your purchase–but it doesn’t sacrifice quality or anything; there truly is plenty of moisture and cleanser even when cut into thirds to clean your face! Otherwise you’ll be running through a jar in less than a month!
I’m concerned at the enormous container compared to the contents inside it. As you can see in the photo above, it comes about 2/3 to 1/2 full, but the pads themselves don’t take up the entire diameter of the jar, let alone the height. I’m not sure why it’s so big. It seems like it’d be a better idea to minimize excess air inside the jar to maintain the moisture of the pads (but these were plenty saturated, not even a hint of dryness). I think because I really can’t see the purpose behind such over-sized packaging, I find it particularly wasteful and almost a turn-off from the product overall.
These are more expensive than some makeup removing wipes, which work as well, and come in more economical packaging to boot! You’ll also need to rinse your face after using, so it’s not as convenient as makeup removing wipes (which shouldn’t need you to rinse). I guess I’d rather just use a regular cleanser (and though I have not tried it, there is Aveeno Positively Ageless Daily Exfoliating Cleanser) and use my hands rather than a small pad.
I could see some utility out of these as a nice travel option, but because the jar is mammoth, I don’t see myself traveling with it–it’d take up way too much room for what it’s worth. If I actually have that much space, that means I’m checking luggage and can just bring my regular ol’ cleanser–and if I’m just carrying-on, there’s no way it could fit!
They do their job — they do cleanse, remove the majority of my face makeup (but I wouldn’t use this on the eyes, so it’s a no-go for eye makeup), and didn’t dry out my skin. I’m just less than impressed by the glaringly wasteful packaging. If you cut the pads into halves or thirds, I think you’ll be able to stretch the usage out where it’s much, much more in line with affordable skincare.

Recommendation: If you’re often on the go and would love to have a pre-moistened cleansing pad help keep you and your skincare routine on track, you might find these a more practical investment! Or if you have particularly sensitive skin and find most scrubs and exfoliators too harsh on skin, the textured side of this pad is very gentle and may be a better fit for your skin type.

I tried these and my skin must be sensitive because I got a slight burning feeling 🙁 I gave the rest to my friend.
I’ve used them on my eyes and it didn’t irritate them.
I tried these a few years ago and was equally NOT impressed by the mammoth container — pass!
I used these when they were in the green jar and liked them a lot because they remove makeup instantly and even exfoliate. I realized that they were pretty wasteful, so I actually took the labels off the empty jars and use them to store things like cotton balls & makeup sponges. I’d even rinse off the pads once I was done w/ them and use them to quickly wipe up my sink. (Cutting them in half is a great idea.) Unless you have oily skin, you’d probably need to put moisturizer on right after using these, though. They’re pretty drying. I wouldn’t even use them every day.
christine, i found this review rather awkward considering the wording in your first paragraph entry:

First, you assess the product as “overkill”, then you follow immediately with the statement that its performance foams up but “not excessively.”
I’m not sure what you mean. Can you clarify what about this product exactly is overkill and what about it is not excessive? Review sounds contradictory so not sure what you’re trying to say. (i.e. which is it: overkill or not excessive?)
Each pad is SOAKED with cleanser, practically dripping – you don’t need that much cleanser on a single pad for a single usage (which is why I recommended cutting the pads into halves or thirds). The cleanser itself doesn’t *foam* excessively.
i think the jars are bigger so that people can fit their hands and fingers through them! i know i would be completely irritated with a product if i couldn’t get it out, and since the pads are wet, it would be worse to have to turn the jar upside down to try to get wet, dripping product out!
They could keep the width, but I don’t think you need that much height? I have big hands, and I actually find it awkward to cram my hand so deep into the jar to get the pads out!
I’ve never tried these pad particularly but i’ve tried several other cleansers/moisturizers from the positively ageless line and i’m really not a fan. every product i’ve tried will be just a little bit off in terms of packaging or forumlation.
Very deceiving with the amount of product to container ratio.
I wouldn’t advise travelling with these – I made the mistake of leaving them in my car on a hot day and the package (literally) exploded. (It was a new package I had purchased, and hadn’t taken the seal off at that time.) I had Aveeno pads all over the back of my car, and I couldn’t get the smell out (sometimes, I can still smell the stuff). LOL!

I know this is an old post, but thought I’d mention this: when I used to use Peter Thomas Roth Max Complexion Correction Pads, they were soaked with solution too. While I did cut each pad in half, I would also squeeze the excess back into the jar. By the time the pads were gone, I had lots of liquid left in the jar, so I’d use cotton pads. I used to do the same thing even for cheaper stuff, like Oxy.
It’s just a good way to get every bit of use out of those kind of products. 🙂

I just wanted to point out that I love your personality and the ways you express yourself. And I fully agree on the entire size issue. The jar should definitely be smaller in both diameter and height. Out of curiosity, Have you tried the Neutrogena Ultra-Soft Eye Makeup Remover Pads? If so, Do they differ at all from these ones? (sorry for such a long comment)
