Do you ever buy a product that only seems to have negative reviews?

Do you ever buy a product that only seems to have negative reviews? Does it end up being as bad as people say it is?

.

Unless it’s a SUPER, SUPER new product, then I might, despite some early reviews. If it’s been out for awhile, I usually don’t end up inclined to buy!

Thanks to Rashmi for today’s question!

We appreciate enthusiasm for new releases but ask readers to please hold questions regarding if/when a review will be posted as we can't commit to or guarantee product reviews. We don't want to set expectations and then disappoint readers as even products that are swatched don't always end up being reviewed due to time constraints and changes in priorities! Thank you for understanding!

NOPE! I look at reviews for most purchases, especially online. When a product has several negative reviews, or the negative outweighs the positive, I figure everyone can’t be wrong.

No. But some of my favorite products have mixed reviews. The main one that comes to mind is my Chanel Inimitable mascara. It is my HG mascara, but on makeupalley it has a very mediocre score.

If a product is brand new, though, I will buy it despite initial negative reviews.

No, not if I see more negative than positive reviews when I am contemplating trying a new product. The only exception would be if I have tried the product myself without before looking at reviews and I find that it works for me, then no amount of negative reviews can steer me away.

I probably wouldn’t, but I have bought things and then looked at reviews after the fact only to discover that a lot of people didn’t like the product in question. This happened with my Physician’s Formula tinted moisturizer, but I love it! Usually I only look at reviews if I don’t know anything about the brand, or if I’ve become curious about a certain product due to a few rave reviews and I want to know if lots of people share the same opinion. Mostly I buy things from brands I’m already familiar with, though, so I don’t even bother looking at reviews.

I have, but it depends on the reviews. Sometimes if very few people have reviewed it, it may not be accurate. I also look at why they didn’t like it. For example Clinique Moisturizing Gel. People complained it wasn’t moisturizing enough. Well, hello you bought the wrong product! I was looking for something light and oil-free for my oily skin so it’s perfect….ended up being one of my fav products!

i never buy … i always turn up here to see what u have reviewed …
but yes it does happened that i bought product in store without reading enough reviews
but then as soon as i search n see any negetive reviews i return it immediatelly ….

No! I trust other reviewers.. they are FAR more trustworthy than a pushing SA!! If the revs are negative I’m not buying it.

never. i rely on reviews from websites like this one :), and makeupalley, etc, before i purchase a MAC product. i like to do lots of research before i buy something (i dont have lots of makeup spending money)so if i dont take risks with purchases.

Yes, if the negative reviews are about poor pigmentation. Actually, reviews like “Too light for me” or “It doesn’t show up on my skin!” are actually POSITIVE reviews for me! My skin is in the NW0-NW5 range throughout the year, so finding color cosmetics that suit me can be a real challenge.

If I can test it out in the store myself and think it is OK I may. Depends on what the review says and if I know the brand. I am likely to buy products without testing if they have great reviews and it is a brand I know. If it is an unknown brand (to me) and I can’t test it, then no I don’t buy it.

Depends on why the reviews were poor. I can sometimes deal with flimsy packaging if the product is worth it, or if the complaint is the color. Since all skin tones, eye colors, etc are different, I can’t take someone else’s opinion on color.

However, if it’s for quality of product that’s an issue, or the size for price, etc, then I definitely DO NOT buy.

Carol Avatar

It really depends. Some of the reviews are a case of using the product wrong, not liking the colour, or buying the product hoping it would have an effect it’s not supposed to! So I make sure to read the reviews carefully and consider whether or not I’ll purchase based on the seemingly less biased/silly reviews.

No. I may think its a good product at first glance but if others have put time and effort to check out the product I’m going to trust them over my initial thought

I generally like to read reviews before buying. If something has very poor scores, I usually look for a similar product that is much better. However, I dro realize that this is flawed, for a product that is terrible on someone else could be fabulous on me.

If I actually read a bad review there will be a tug of war in my head, but if it goes on sale, or there is a deal with it I’ll most likely actually buy it.
