MAC Eyeshadow Palettes: Permanent Eyeshadows (April 2010)
MAC Eyeshadow Palettes: Permanent Eyeshadows (April 2010)
These are all the permanent MAC eyeshadows I have to-date. Over the past year, I’ve been working on increasing my permanent eyeshadow collection (although I’ve had many from over the years!), because I want to phase out my older limited edition shades from the looks I post on the blog. There are a few limited edition and discontinued shades in these palettes, but overall, they’re focused on the permanent range.
How I Organize…
- By color in rainbow order (Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Purple, Brown, Gray, Black)
- By undertone — e.g. blue-based purples are separate from red-based purples; cool neutrals from warmer neutrals
I have a tendency to buy PRO shades when I finally get around to visiting one, and so I’ve ended up with a few doubles! Boy, nothing makes you feel silly like buying the same shade twice!
See close-ups and labels…

Someone likes Goldmine! 😉 Eyegasm!
One of the original four 🙂
hahaha I died when I read ‘Eyegasm’ hahaa
those are beautiful!you make me want to go to mac and get more eyeshadows now~ i never knew macc once had their eyeshadows in a square shape! you must’ve been a long time collecctor
The square pans are from holiday palettes — but they sometimes include permanent shades in holiday palettes!
*drooling*!!!!!!!
That is just so fabulous!! Right now I can only dream of having a collection like that, I know I will get there one day! I’m loving the blues, greens and purples the most!
hi,love your blog!
Can you swatch all these eyeshadows ?
xoxo
I’ve already swatched everything — you can find them here: http://www.temptalia.com/mac-cosmetics-your-guide-to-everything-mac-makeup
Thank you!
what an awesome collection!
awesome collection!!
*drools like Homer Simpson* pretty
Thanks for this Christine, it really helps in comparing colours to each other when trying to decide what to buy next 🙂 I know you really like Soft Brown but it d/c’d in the UK so I’m trying to work out what I use that’s similar for blending. From the looks of it maybe Tete-a-Tint might work.
I’d say Tete-a-tint comes out a little more orange-y than brown, IMO!
i was drooling this whole post. but i cant believe you dont have the full size of satin taupe and smut. my all time faves!! What are your fave MAC eyeshadows (le, dc, perm…doesn’t matter!)
xox
I do have full-sizes of both – they’re the square pans from holiday sets 🙂 My favorites are the ones that have pan showing!
I love your e/s alley!! 🙂
Wow, thanks for this post. It helps me to think of how to organize my shadows . . . and decide which of these shades I need to go buy!
I second that!
I just can’t believe I have way more pan showing on my first Femme-fi than you do 🙂 Buuut I don’t have nearly as many different shadows so that makes a difference, heh! I’m guessing that the couple you didn’t label LE are discontinued, right – like Femme Noir? (That’s the only one I don’t recognize as discontinued, but I’m assuming it must be.)
Two things: can’t believe your Nylon doesn’t have even a dent in it? I thought you use that one a lot! And I am pretty sure Orange is actually a regular permanent color, not Pro, but correct me if I am wrong.
LOL! I alternate between so many highlighters that even though I prefer Femme-fi, I could (if I had to!) live without it.
Actually, it’s a brand new Nylon 🙂 I gave my sister my half-used Nylon to try out instead.
Yeah, I think Femme Noir got the boot. I am terrible at keeping up with what they discontinue, so I didn’t even attempt to list what was DC. I think a bunch of the Matte2s are discontinued as well.
It totally could be, I just remember buying it at the PRO store and not remembering it at the regular store.
i was just thinking the same thing about orange — i just saw it at my local mac, which isn’t pro.
Thanks for letting me know!
Yeah…I could live without Femme-fi too. Ricepaper is frostier but works pretty well! But it’s definitely my go-to, not just as a highlighter but as a quick wash if I’m running late. Perks up the eyes and all that.
(I thought that Nylon looked brand new!)
Most of the Matte2s are discontinued. It makes me a sad makeup addict 🙁 I’ve had to chase down quite a lot of them. I don’t get why they’d discontinue colors like Flourishing and Graphology…I’m always worried Blanc Type is gonna go too!
I don’t know why they discontinued the Matte2s… such a great matte texture. MAC has some great mattes (and some not-so-great ones, too), but the Matte2 is really a winning matte texture in my eyes! Very blendable, which mattes often *aren’t.*
Darn! I didn’t realize they were discontinuing matte2! I remember when it came out, I hardly wore mattes, so I didn’t pick any up for a long time. Now I find myself reaching for mattes more often, and I <3 the matte2 finish.
Really, they should get rid of the old matte formula, and make the same colours as matte2.
Awesome!!! Lately I have been getting LE eyeshadows and not have been purchasing any permanent eyeshadows. The last PRO eyeshadow that I got was Soot e/s and I love the texture! I have it in the sleeve until I purchase another palette. I wish I can organize my palettes but I’m too scared since I have broke two eyeshadows (both Aquavert and Off The Page) and fixed them with rubbing alcohol. I also broke Texture and Vanilla and cracked Carbon and almost broke Silverthorn, Dear Cupcake and Sugarshot. I have been wanting to purchase some permanent eyeshadows for awhile but never got around to do it though. Hopefully I’ll do one day.
Hmm, maybe you should try EnKore’s no-heat method! 🙂 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o–oPgjo43o
This is great. Being new to mac This is really helpful. Now my pocket is going to feel it.
What do you do in instances when say a new color comes out, do you keep your permanent and your limited editions seperate.
Yes, I keep them separate — did you see my post on Sunday? It showcased all my LE palettes 🙂
Thank you I will check it out
what were your other three ‘originals’?
my ‘originals’ were amber lights and carbon…my carbon is from when they did a larger circle version of at least some shades, and the containers were screw tops!
the next two were ricepaper and saddle…i’m not sure what i’ll do when saddle runs out!
I believe they were Amber Lights, Bronze, Goldmine, and Coppering… maybe Antiqued. I can never nail down the fourth one. My original Bronze got dropped, so I finally replaced what was left recently!
🙂 my original amber lights got ‘borrowed’ and never returned…so i ended up replacing it recently. but it’s strange because now that i have a lot more shades, i don’t find myself reaching for it very often.
it looks like stars n rockets was one of your originals! LOL ok im done lurking 😛
Nah, but I have had it for awhile 🙂
wow! what a beautiful collection. do you always depot all your eyeshadows and put them in palletes?
Yes!
Why don’t you just buy them in their pan made for pallets?
Most of them are… sometimes the shade comes out in limited edition packaging and then I later depot.
Fantastic! I think I have 12 of these myself. 🙂
Btw, I just love the “eyeshadow alley” picture! How can you take such a long photo by the way? Panoramic shot? It looks great.
I just stood further back, no special technique 🙂
It’s just it’s such a long picture, not standard photo shape, but I guess you could’ve cropped it, didn’t think of that. You see I’m still stuck in the 90’s when we didn’t have digital cameras and couldn’t edit photos, lol. 🙂 (It’s my age, lol.)
Oh, yep, cropped it! 🙂 I crop all my photos, lol!
I love how you have so many! I need more 🙁
I noticed some names that I’ve never heard before! Were they once permanent shades then discontinued? Like Post Haste, Juiced, and Femme Noir?
Yeah, there are some discontinued shades in there – I don’t keep up with what they discontinue, so I always forget!
haha Christine! I just realized you have about 20 eyeshadow palettes. Do you mark them so you know which palette contains which color? I can’t imagine oepning up 20 different palettes to find the right eyeshadows you want, LOL!
I keep them in rainbow order 🙂
haha you’re so organized. I would definitely get mine out of order. I have only 4 palettes and I have them labeled with Post-Its! haha!
I have a pretty good memory when it comes to MAC, LOL!
haha! Do you ever depot your shadows that are in LE pkging? I can’t bear to! Probably because 50% of the reason why I buy that shadow is for the shadow itself and the other 50% is because of the pretty LE pkging, haha!
Yes, I do – I have no desire to have all those little pots hanging about! They take up so much space!
How hard is it to depot eyeshadows? It’s something that’s on my to do list, and I wasn’t sure how many palettes to buy….once you get one in the palette can you move it still?
I don’t find it difficult, but some people do find it hard. Each palette holds 15 eyeshadows, so you can just figure out how many eyeshadows you have and then divide by 15 to figure out how many palettes you need. Yes, you can move it in the palettes!
Awesome collection too, by the way!
I have 2 four pan palettes I created on my own. Recently I put together my first 15 pan palette. I tried to group them the best I can but I’m just glad I have them all together. The 15 pan palette is great because I can see all the shades that I have forgotten about – it forces me to use all my shadows. Plus, depotting MAC eyeshadows is one of my favorite Art Projects!!
I like four pan palettes, too. I have several empty quads that I will create combos out of when I travel 🙂 I have too many to survive a full on quad system, lol, but I do like palettes since it reminds me of what I own!
Also, what is the difference between a matte and matte 2?
Matte2 is a different formula – it’s softer, creamier, easier to blend.
Are the square pans from the Holiday palettes? How hard were they to depot? (I’ve been thinking about doing this)
Yes, they are, but I haven’t done it since 2005-ish, so I don’t know if they’re harder now.
Funny enough, after seeing Christine’s e/s and realizing I could depot the 6-shadow palettes I went to see my Rose Garden one and it just popped out of the case! I didn’t event try that hard. It was just held in there with that kind sticky rubber glue stuff on two sides.
I plan on now doing the normal depotting to get them out of the little plastic holder.
Now what to do with the case??? Storage for blotting papers??
Business card holder… just a mirror compact… button holder! Who knows 🙂
Sometimes you’ll get lucky and there isn’t much glue… sometimes there’s a TON! (Same with regular eyeshadow pots!)
I have no words for this besides…DROOL… just beautiful to look at!
Sooo pretty! Thanks for doing this 🙂
*swoon* Looks like I’ll be starting a third palette!!!
omgggggg i love this you’re the best !
This is so great for reference. Thanks!
Are you missing Quarry or did I miss it? =)
I don’t own all of the permanent eyeshadows, sorry!
Thank You for the Makeup Pr0n! Your typographic looks so much lighter than mine. Mine looks almost as black as carbon.
This has really helped in deciding what shadows I need. THANKS!!!
do you shop at the PRO store in San Francisco? can you shop there without a PRO card? i’ve been wanting to go 😉
Yes, that’s usually the one I go to 🙂 You can shop at any PRO store without a card – they’re all open to the public.
cool! im gonna make a day-cation there!
Holy crap Christine, I’m J-E-A-L-O-U-S. I don’t even have enough to fit into one palette, haha!
Wow! Going through your collection and making note of what you’ve hit pan on and comparing them to what I need to buy!
to me – this is my “makeup porn”. Love! So jealous.
Christine,
Do you own Paradisco? If so, what should I wear with it?? any suggestions…. (nc35 for reference)!
Also if you have any suggestions for Coppering as well!
Thanks xx
I do — it’s in my Hello Kitty palette, I believe!
I like it with golds, bronzes, coppers, and greens!
For Coppering, I like it with golds, bronzes, coppers as well 🙂
you don’t have trax or club! gasp!
Gasp! :O I don’t own them all — I think I don’t own anywhere between 30-40. I’ve owned both of those previously, but never liked them enough, so when I was downsizing (I can’t believe I was “downsizing” at any point in my life), those were out the door quick!
Isn’t Velvet Moss LE?
I think it may be discontinued now!
Ever thought about removing the insert in the palette so you could hold more shadows? Or using those Z palettes or larger palettes they sell on smh?
Nope — absolutely HATE the way they look! So, so messy and cluttered… yuck! No desire to remove the inserts or use Z palettes. I like the perfect spacing of the 15-pan palettes!
ha im the same way, it would be nice if mac made bigger palettes maybe
I kind of like it in 15 🙂 I like the size — it’s large enough to be sturdy and hold a lot, but it’s not so large that it’s awkward. It fits in drawers, cabinets, bags, etc.!
how many of the perminates do you not own? you have so many i was just wondering! LOL.
and also, i dont know if you tried creme di miel from naked honey, but do you know a dupe for it? its my fav and i hit pan quite a bit):
30-40? or so that I don’t own.
Nylon would be the closest dupe to Creme de Miel.
Wow that is my goal down the road to have an eyeshadow alley just like that. I’ve been inspired!!
Looking at all of your colors makes me want so many PRO colors! Indian Ink, Aqua, Sky Blue, Cobalt, and Blue Calm; all so lovely!
I always wait til I have a lot of PRO items I want, and then I call up the store and have them do a charge-send 🙂 Makes the $7 flat rate shipping worth it!
Beautiful collection!
“femme noir” was a L.E, isn’t it? :’-(
I believe it was permanent and then discontinued.
does your idol eyes shadow have a purple tint to it? i have the same color and mine looks like a really light purple with sparkle, but yours looks gray in the pics. are there two versions?
It has a slight purple tint to it.
No Club??
Nope, sorry, I don’t own all of the permanent shades!
Hey Christine! Amazing collection! Haha
Question though, I thought Vibrant Grape was now a permanent shade?
Oh, I think it might be… I know it’s always been permanent at PRO.
Compared to your LE’s, do you find that some of them are similar?
Of course!
So trying to get most LE’s wouldn’t really be worth it, right?
Just getting the perms would be equal?
It’s not really about either — it’s more about getting which shades you like 🙂 MAC has a great permanent range, and they have done some fantastic shades that are limited edition, too. My perfect collection wouldn’t be 100% LE or 100% permanent.
That’s a good way to put it, thank you Christine 🙂
Great Collection & Organization! XD
Just out of curiostiy, how do you have such a good knowledge of colour theory (You’ve got warm & cool colours spot on) even though you don’t go to art school (which I do go to)?
Thanks, Rosanna!
I’d have to say through experience – just playing and using makeup, because I definitely haven’t read up on color theory at all!
I’m jealous!!!! ehhehhe I love goldmine too!
You’ve hit pan on:
Gorgeous Gold
Goldmine
Juxt
Lucky Green
Stars n’Rockets
Freshwater
Ricepaper
Femme-Fi
XD I love that you’ve hit pan on COLOURS because most people hit pan on neutrals or highlighters first – hardly no colour! And No wonder you’ve hit pan on these colours! They’re all fabulous colours, too!
LOL, I never stick with a highlighter long enough to hit pan on it typically. I like to change up the highlighter based on the look 😀
You have an amazing collection!!! I can’t wait to begin my own eye shadow alley!!!
Christine, WOW…thank you so much for all the work you put into this!!! This is so helpful, to see all the colors up close. It’s definitely “eyeshadow alley!!!” THANK YOU!
Whoa. I’m totally in awe of your collection. I don’t have enough to fill even one palette!
Any here that are must-haves for you?
Oh gosh, there are a ton of must-haves, LOL! Anything I’ve hit pan on for sure…
I don’t see swimming in your collection. Why?
I don’t own all of MAC’s permanent eyeshadows, sorry!
I am hatin on you ms. honey. your collection is fantastic. How long did it take you to accumulate all of those shadows?
6 years
I am SO jealous you got Femme-Fi !
Anyone have a great dupe for graphology… I missed the boat by a mile and have been trying to make up for it for almost a year…
Thanks
Poison Pen would be the closest, but that might be discontinued… Or Indian Ink.
Thank you for sharing this!! I love it! They don’t even sell palettes here in my country 🙁
Wow great collection! Do you know how many the MAC palettes hold when you take the dividers out vs. how many the Z palettes hold?
I don’t have Z palettes, sorry.
Love!.. looking at e/s…**picks up slobbers off chin**
I trying to pick out 4 e/s…Wonder if you can help me..
What I want to avoid is frosty, chunky e/s..I just don’t look good in frost..I know mac has some that say Frost..yet are more Satin..
Shroom
Naked Lunch
Gleam
Hush
Are these ok choices to wear as both a highlight and all over e/s..? Or… only highlights..T.i.a. !~
DANNNGGGG! This was so helpful! Thank you for sharing! : D
Hi Christine!
Could you please explain the difference between tete-a-tint and soft brown (and kid)? I want to buy one of these to blend out browns in the crease (e.g cork) Which would you choose?
Thanks! (don’t know how I’d manage without Temptalia 🙂 )
Where can I buy original mac palettes besides the mac site? They are sooo expensive, but I want! I have the hello kitty mac palette but the colors are all shimmery and I would like to have some matte colors. Help a broke college student out 🙁
