MAC Eyeshadow Palettes: Permanent Eyeshadows (April 2010)

MAC Eyeshadow Palettes: Permanent Eyeshadows (April 2010)

These are all the permanent MAC eyeshadows I have to-date.  Over the past year, I’ve been working on increasing my permanent eyeshadow collection (although I’ve had many from over the years!), because I want to phase out my older limited edition shades from the looks I post on the blog.  There are a few limited edition and discontinued shades in these palettes, but overall, they’re focused on the permanent range.

How I Organize…

  • By color in rainbow order (Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Purple, Brown, Gray, Black)
  • By undertone — e.g. blue-based purples are separate from red-based purples; cool neutrals from warmer neutrals

I have a tendency to buy PRO shades when I finally get around to visiting one, and so I’ve ended up with a few doubles!  Boy, nothing makes you feel silly like buying the same shade twice!

See close-ups and labels…

those are beautiful!you make me want to go to mac and get more eyeshadows now~ i never knew macc once had their eyeshadows in a square shape! you must’ve been a long time collecctor

JB/Brandi Avatar

*drooling*!!!!!!!

That is just so fabulous!! Right now I can only dream of having a collection like that, I know I will get there one day! I’m loving the blues, greens and purples the most!

Ally_D Avatar

*drools like Homer Simpson* pretty

Thanks for this Christine, it really helps in comparing colours to each other when trying to decide what to buy next 🙂 I know you really like Soft Brown but it d/c’d in the UK so I’m trying to work out what I use that’s similar for blending. From the looks of it maybe Tete-a-Tint might work.

lauraaaaa Avatar

i was drooling this whole post. but i cant believe you dont have the full size of satin taupe and smut. my all time faves!! What are your fave MAC eyeshadows (le, dc, perm…doesn’t matter!)

Michelle Avatar

Wow, thanks for this post. It helps me to think of how to organize my shadows . . . and decide which of these shades I need to go buy!

daphne Avatar

I just can’t believe I have way more pan showing on my first Femme-fi than you do 🙂 Buuut I don’t have nearly as many different shadows so that makes a difference, heh! I’m guessing that the couple you didn’t label LE are discontinued, right – like Femme Noir? (That’s the only one I don’t recognize as discontinued, but I’m assuming it must be.)

Two things: can’t believe your Nylon doesn’t have even a dent in it? I thought you use that one a lot! And I am pretty sure Orange is actually a regular permanent color, not Pro, but correct me if I am wrong.

Christine Avatar

LOL! I alternate between so many highlighters that even though I prefer Femme-fi, I could (if I had to!) live without it.

Actually, it’s a brand new Nylon 🙂 I gave my sister my half-used Nylon to try out instead.

Yeah, I think Femme Noir got the boot. I am terrible at keeping up with what they discontinue, so I didn’t even attempt to list what was DC. I think a bunch of the Matte2s are discontinued as well.

It totally could be, I just remember buying it at the PRO store and not remembering it at the regular store.

daphne Avatar

Yeah…I could live without Femme-fi too. Ricepaper is frostier but works pretty well! But it’s definitely my go-to, not just as a highlighter but as a quick wash if I’m running late. Perks up the eyes and all that.

(I thought that Nylon looked brand new!)

Most of the Matte2s are discontinued. It makes me a sad makeup addict 🙁 I’ve had to chase down quite a lot of them. I don’t get why they’d discontinue colors like Flourishing and Graphology…I’m always worried Blanc Type is gonna go too!

JayJay Avatar

Darn! I didn’t realize they were discontinuing matte2! I remember when it came out, I hardly wore mattes, so I didn’t pick any up for a long time. Now I find myself reaching for mattes more often, and I <3 the matte2 finish.

Really, they should get rid of the old matte formula, and make the same colours as matte2.

Jacquelyn Avatar

Awesome!!! Lately I have been getting LE eyeshadows and not have been purchasing any permanent eyeshadows. The last PRO eyeshadow that I got was Soot e/s and I love the texture! I have it in the sleeve until I purchase another palette. I wish I can organize my palettes but I’m too scared since I have broke two eyeshadows (both Aquavert and Off The Page) and fixed them with rubbing alcohol. I also broke Texture and Vanilla and cracked Carbon and almost broke Silverthorn, Dear Cupcake and Sugarshot. I have been wanting to purchase some permanent eyeshadows for awhile but never got around to do it though. Hopefully I’ll do one day.

aradhana Avatar

what were your other three ‘originals’?

my ‘originals’ were amber lights and carbon…my carbon is from when they did a larger circle version of at least some shades, and the containers were screw tops!
the next two were ricepaper and saddle…i’m not sure what i’ll do when saddle runs out!

aradhana Avatar

🙂 my original amber lights got ‘borrowed’ and never returned…so i ended up replacing it recently. but it’s strange because now that i have a lot more shades, i don’t find myself reaching for it very often.

Anitacska Avatar

Fantastic! I think I have 12 of these myself. 🙂

Btw, I just love the “eyeshadow alley” picture! How can you take such a long photo by the way? Panoramic shot? It looks great.

Anitacska Avatar

It’s just it’s such a long picture, not standard photo shape, but I guess you could’ve cropped it, didn’t think of that. You see I’m still stuck in the 90’s when we didn’t have digital cameras and couldn’t edit photos, lol. 🙂 (It’s my age, lol.)

HC Avatar

haha Christine! I just realized you have about 20 eyeshadow palettes. Do you mark them so you know which palette contains which color? I can’t imagine oepning up 20 different palettes to find the right eyeshadows you want, LOL!

HC Avatar

haha! Do you ever depot your shadows that are in LE pkging? I can’t bear to! Probably because 50% of the reason why I buy that shadow is for the shadow itself and the other 50% is because of the pretty LE pkging, haha!

Emily Avatar

How hard is it to depot eyeshadows? It’s something that’s on my to do list, and I wasn’t sure how many palettes to buy….once you get one in the palette can you move it still?

Christine Avatar

I don’t find it difficult, but some people do find it hard. Each palette holds 15 eyeshadows, so you can just figure out how many eyeshadows you have and then divide by 15 to figure out how many palettes you need. Yes, you can move it in the palettes!

Alexis Avatar

I have 2 four pan palettes I created on my own. Recently I put together my first 15 pan palette. I tried to group them the best I can but I’m just glad I have them all together. The 15 pan palette is great because I can see all the shades that I have forgotten about – it forces me to use all my shadows. Plus, depotting MAC eyeshadows is one of my favorite Art Projects!!

Cherie Avatar

Funny enough, after seeing Christine’s e/s and realizing I could depot the 6-shadow palettes I went to see my Rose Garden one and it just popped out of the case! I didn’t event try that hard. It was just held in there with that kind sticky rubber glue stuff on two sides.

I plan on now doing the normal depotting to get them out of the little plastic holder.

Now what to do with the case??? Storage for blotting papers??

Kiran Avatar

Christine,

Do you own Paradisco? If so, what should I wear with it?? any suggestions…. (nc35 for reference)!

Also if you have any suggestions for Coppering as well!

Thanks xx

Christine Avatar

Gasp! :O I don’t own them all — I think I don’t own anywhere between 30-40. I’ve owned both of those previously, but never liked them enough, so when I was downsizing (I can’t believe I was “downsizing” at any point in my life), those were out the door quick!

Rachael Avatar

Ever thought about removing the insert in the palette so you could hold more shadows? Or using those Z palettes or larger palettes they sell on smh?

lexi Avatar

how many of the perminates do you not own? you have so many i was just wondering! LOL.

and also, i dont know if you tried creme di miel from naked honey, but do you know a dupe for it? its my fav and i hit pan quite a bit):

Ashley Avatar

does your idol eyes shadow have a purple tint to it? i have the same color and mine looks like a really light purple with sparkle, but yours looks gray in the pics. are there two versions?

Rosanna Avatar

Great Collection & Organization! XD

Just out of curiostiy, how do you have such a good knowledge of colour theory (You’ve got warm & cool colours spot on) even though you don’t go to art school (which I do go to)?

Rosanna Avatar

You’ve hit pan on:

Gorgeous Gold
Goldmine
Juxt
Lucky Green
Stars n’Rockets
Freshwater
Ricepaper
Femme-Fi

XD I love that you’ve hit pan on COLOURS because most people hit pan on neutrals or highlighters first – hardly no colour! And No wonder you’ve hit pan on these colours! They’re all fabulous colours, too!

Annette Avatar

Christine, WOW…thank you so much for all the work you put into this!!! This is so helpful, to see all the colors up close. It’s definitely “eyeshadow alley!!!” THANK YOU!

Ceriene Avatar

Whoa. I’m totally in awe of your collection. I don’t have enough to fill even one palette!

Any here that are must-haves for you?

phillyshoegirl` Avatar

I am hatin on you ms. honey. your collection is fantastic. How long did it take you to accumulate all of those shadows?

Mercedez Avatar

Love!.. looking at e/s…**picks up slobbers off chin**

I trying to pick out 4 e/s…Wonder if you can help me..
What I want to avoid is frosty, chunky e/s..I just don’t look good in frost..I know mac has some that say Frost..yet are more Satin..

Shroom
Naked Lunch
Gleam
Hush

Are these ok choices to wear as both a highlight and all over e/s..? Or… only highlights..T.i.a. !~

Amira Avatar

Hi Christine!
Could you please explain the difference between tete-a-tint and soft brown (and kid)? I want to buy one of these to blend out browns in the crease (e.g cork) Which would you choose?
Thanks! (don’t know how I’d manage without Temptalia 🙂 )

Bunii Avatar

Where can I buy original mac palettes besides the mac site? They are sooo expensive, but I want! I have the hello kitty mac palette but the colors are all shimmery and I would like to have some matte colors. Help a broke college student out 🙁
