Softer Makeup: Going Coral -- Once More, With Feeling!

Softer Makeup:  Going Coral — Once More, With Feeling!

Just a quickie look here… something neutral so I could do some lip swatches! Ironically, this combination of eyeshadows recreates the look I did last week in a way–it’s subtler, softer, but the strength of Coral Crepe really seems to keep everything in the same family.

Note: I’m also testing out Laura Mercier’s Oil-Free Tinted Moisturizer, but the shade is one too dark for me (it’s Almond, for reference, which I think is suitable for NC30/NC35)–I mention this because you can tell I’m just a little “bronzed” in the photos. I’ll be trying Sand, which should be a better fit, soon, but for now, I’m just wearing it for feel/texture, even if the shade doesn’t match!

You will need the following…

For eyes, start by applying Coral Crepe paint pot as your eyeshadow base all over the lid area with the 249, andn then apply Soft Ochre paint pot from crease to brow. Using the 239, apply #1 eyeshadow on the inner third of the eyelid. Next, apply #114 eyeshadow on the middle third of the eyelid and lightly blend with the inner corner. Darken the outer third of the lid with #111 eyeshadow with the 239, gently brushing it into the lower crease. Lightly blend #111 eyeshadow, with the 239, on the outer corner and lid. To finish the eyeshadow look, sweep Femme-fi eyeshadow as a highlighter on the brow bone. Bring everything together by applying Mirage khol on the lower water line and NC15/NW20 pencil lightly patted below the lower lash line and smudged with the 219 brush. Finish by sweeping lashes with Opulash mascara.

For cheeks, apply Enchanted cream blush on cheeks as a base, and then layer Golden Sand bronzer to the apples of the cheeks and sweep upwards towards the temple with the 116.

For lips, apply Kraft lipstick first, and then layer Fold and Tuck lipglass for a complementing lip.

Check out more photos!

I look a little orange or bronzed, because I am was testing
out a new tinted moisturizer,
but the shade is a wee darker than my
actual skin tone.  But I didn’t want to toss the whole look out the
window, so let’s just go with super bronze, okay? 🙂

I love this look! The eyes are very pretty, I think it’s better without the nude pencil on the waterline. You’re right about the tinted moisturiser, it’s definitely not the right shade for you, lol.

Christine, the TM is blended in well, so it really just looks like you have a tan! I don’t think it’s too bad at all, but of course it’s not quite the right shade. I can’t wait to see your swatches and reviews of the Cle de Peau eyeshadows. When I was shopping Saks F&F this weekend I was thisclose to picking something up at the CdP counter, but I just couldn’t quite do it 😉

Do you apply the Guerlain kohl with that method of closing your eye around the tip and gently pulling it out? I’ve seen videos of that but it always weirded me out!

Roxanne Avatar

Loving this look. It feels like something I could and would do 🙂 I don’t know if I like those Cle de Peau shades just yet (the Coral Crepe paint pot seems to wash them out a bit).
Oh, I was thinking it would be easier and clearer (for me at least) if you could mark the products you’ve already reviewed differently from the ones you haven’t. Like maybe put them in italic or underline or something like that? (I know they are underlined when you hover over them.) Just a suggestion 🙂 And I don’t mind the bronzed look, it looks like you just went on a holiday!

Carly Avatar

I like the colors you used on your eyes & lips, but I think you over did it on the bronzer… your face looks too orange. Though it could be the light or the picture…..

Alexis Avatar

Okay – thanks for that. The p/p that are in current rotation is Groundwork, Rubinesque and sometimes Bare Study. I also use the neutral benefit creaseless shadows as a base. I was thinking of expanding my p/p color wheel but it’s good to know your opinion.

I love when YOU save me money hahahaha!

Melly Avatar

that is the color i expected coral crepe paintpot to be. too bad you have to use an eyeshadow to change it. this is probably one of my favorite looks.

Heli Avatar

This look is so pretty if you forget the extra bronzing! 😀

Coral Crepe works really well with your coloring. I’m worried it might look dirty with pale and warm skintone like mine but it seems so perfect for bronzy summer looks and might also make blue eyes pop.

Mirna Avatar

Very pretty! I am so glad that you can downplay the coral PP if you want to. I think if you ever want to fake a bronze look Christine, this works well. I would change my mind if it looked way different in natural light.

Dusty Avatar

The Guerlain Kohl is SO PRETTY! Love that! I would check it out but it doesn’t seem like the kind of think I could keep sanatized very easily.

Also – Opulash looks nice on your lashes. I’ll be interested in hearing what you think of it when the time comes (especially since you and I both seem to favor the same mascara already).

Love this look! I have never tried wearing e/s but u make it look so pretty that I wanna try it 🙂 as for the tinted moisturizer, I love it it’s my HG T.moisturizer! U might wanna try nude. I’m nc25 and I’m using nude. I tried sand and its a bit dark for me..

Lowie Avatar

This look is beautiful on you! I do love the coral lips and the coral eyes…reminds me of the beach. Perfect look for a warm summery night on the town after a sunny day catching some rays on the beach!

aradhana Avatar

nice look…esp the cle de peau shadows…i wish they were available here!

for reference, i use the laura mercier tinted moisturiser in almond – and i am nw35/nw40 in mac (depending on the formula and time of year etc…)

Dianna Avatar

Wow, I didn’t think the wrong shade of tinted moisturizer could be that easily detected. Oh well, glad you posted the look anyway! Too bad it’s cloudly where I live 🙁

Christine Avatar

It’s the perfect highlighter for my skin tone — it’s not cool-toned, but it’s not super warm or gold, so it can work with a variety of looks. It’s very smooth, soft, and pigmented. It has sheen/shimmer, but it’s not ultra frosty either.

Roxanne Avatar

Hm, I always love how your eyes look with just the bottom lashline lined. I’ve been meaning to try it but I don’t know how it will look! I always line my upper lashline, just never the lower one.

ee Avatar

hey christine i was wondering which tinted moisturizer you like best the laura mercier the koress watermelon or the benefit you rebel(if you have tried that) thank you

Rosanna Avatar

I actually read in a magazine (advice from a MUA) that wearing a half-shade darker than your skin colour is a good way to look bronzed or tan without being unnatural-looking!

You look a tiny bit orange but I don’t think the foundation colour looks noticeably out of place – just as if you got tan (You could skip bronzer!).

How’s the opulash?

Anisha Avatar

Great look! I really have to think about getting that coral paint pot. I am NC 35-37, (NC 40 in midsummer) and I have been using the Laura Mercier TM in Sand, so I’m not sure if it is the right shade for you. Maybe you’ll want to try a lighter shade. Just a head’s up :).

rashmi Avatar

the look is amazing sweetie n hey TM wasnt too bad u know i actually was seeing me instead of u wearing this one hahahah
i can make out that it will suit me …
i badlly want the paint pot but again as u said its not must have i already have 3 n love them … so m thinking if i can skip that and infact this months shopping is already done so see if i buy it in india after 2 – 3 months….
love the lips dear wowow yummilaciaous ….(spell check pls)

Natasha Avatar

Ahh, they matched me wrong for the tinted moisturizer too.
I’m an NW25/NC30 and they matched me with nude.
The colour is about 2 shades lighter… ):
But I still love this t. moisturizer!

Valene Avatar

That look is super pretty on you, but do you think you could do the look with a more grounded makeup line? I just don’t know many who could afford that expensive of makeup. I know there are, of course, some women who can afford a half a Benjamin on one eyeshadow, but I believe the majority of your readers cannot.

Christine Avatar

Hi Valene,

I do looks with a variety of brands and price points — the majority of my looks are done using MAC, which is significantly more affordable than the majority of high-end brands. I think this may be one of only a handful of looks using very high-end/luxury lines, so I invite you to look into the archive, which includes overs 300 looks. You don’t have to use what I use in order to replicate a look, either — it is an idea, but you are always welcome to use what you own, whatever it may be, if a look interests you. 🙂 I would certainly not expect or want anyone to purchase every product I use, whether the product is $1 or $50! My hope is that it may give you an idea on what to pair with certain colors or products that you may own.

Christina Avatar

Love it Christine, beautiful look!

Love the eye make up, and the lipstick looks great! Kraft is the only one I didn’t get from the collection though, but I absolutely adore Fold and Tuck lipglass, I normally wear it with a very bare lipstick underneath, or none at all.

It’s so funny because I saw the picture, and I was like “oh my, why is her skin so orange??” and then I saw the caption and I thought “oh I see!”

You’re adorable Christine, haha. The lashes look divine! BTW, I know in your review for the Opulash mascara you didn’t curl them before hand, but did you curl them here?

Hannelore Avatar

Wow, this is so pretty! It’s natural enough to wear daily, even to school! I’ve been looking for different natural school looks, this will be one I’m trying! Thanks! ^^

Lauren Avatar

Hey Christine, not sure if you’re still answering questions on this post, but I was just wondering if you could think of any MAC dupes for the three Cle de Peau shadows in this look? I think it’s totally gorgeous (this, and your other Pret-a-papier look totally inspired me to go out and buy Coral Crepe), but I only have MAC shadows, and I really suck at figuring out dupes, so hopefully you can help me out – thanks!

Mia Avatar

I’m NC35/37 and I use the LM tinted moisturizer in fawn; really like it.

After trying a sample of coral crepe, I had to get the full size. It’s so pretty and versatile. Really brings up the lids of my hooded eyes.
