I like colored bases when I want to amplify or bring out a certain quality about the shadow I am using.

I love “Groundwork” P/P to intensify a brown shadow or the taupe shadestick.
I also love sharkskin shadestick under certain shadows.

Sometimes I even wear the color bases as a shadow.

Depends on the look, and the amount of time I have! Just putting eyeshadow over my Painterly is so much faster and requires less thought and planning than figuring out how to blend various colors over a colored base. And with some looks/colors, the nude is just more practical. But when a colored base is called for, it can be awesome!

I love colored bases! But for my own sanity I just grab my nudish Bare Study in everyday life because it can take me 10 minutes to figure out which colored base I want to use and I just rather stay ten minutes longer in bed than to figure it out.

I like both, but I tend to use neutral ones (UDPP, Guerlain eyeshadow base, etc.) more often because I don’t have time to think about what else to use. 🙂 But sometimes I just use a coloured base on its own if I don’t have more time in the mornings, like Urban Decay’s cream e/s or UDPP in Sin.

I agree with you..I LOVE LOVE LOVE them!!! Especially with my skin tone (NC40), it’s a bit difficult for certain shadows to show up on my skin. And then I discovered black bases, pink bases, and so on…My favorites are MAC paintpots and Benefit Creaseless Cream shadows. I remember one funny incident at this one MAC counter in San Mateo–one that I’ve never been to. One of their sales associates (she didn’t seem like an artist) and I were debating between Steamy and Aquadisiac…and she said: “Get this (Steamy) because it’s darker and works better with your skin tone.” I just laughed and said to myself, “Whatever…I can make this work!” I ended up buying BOTH shadows and they did work with my skintone with a black base! Hah! Colored bases give me endless possibilities with eyeshadows!

I think the best 100$ i ever spent was on the MUFE cream color collection palette. Those bases make EVERYTHING look awesome! I just wish i could find a way to make them stay so I could just wear them wet and glossy.

I like them too and own several that have never been touched because I’m a little intimidated by using them. Like most here, it’s a time thing to be able to figure out what to wear with it and how to do so. I need more practice to get comfy. In the mean time it’s original UDPP & Sin UDPP, Painterly PP or a black base for special ocassions :0).

I usually use smashbox primer or concealer but I just bought MAC Rubenesque and it’s beautiful with Woodwinked e/s. I’m thinking I’m going to have to try different colored bases now…sigh more $$

Hmmm reading all these comments makes me want a PP that is not so matte like Painterly that I can use w/o e/s on a daily basis (for the purpose of quick makeup for mornings before work). Any suggestions?

Mirna,

Paint Pots in Bare Study (a shimmery, pale champagne gold with a pinkish undertone), Soft Ochre (a matte, yellow-toned beige), and Rubenesque (a shimmery peachy-gold tone) are good products to have. They are great neutrals and can stand on their own and/or be worn with shadow. Painterly is a must have for everyone’s kit because it goes with everything from nudes to bright jewel tones to even charcoals and black.

lLOVE THEM, specially MAC’s Bare Study and Painterly Paintpots! I do own about six other MAC paintpots (my favorite brand) and practically all the Nyx Jumbo pencils. My favorite? Milk!

I love colored bases since they make the bright eyeshadows show up more than just using UPDD and TFSI alone. Most of the time, I like nude/beige bases like my Butternutty shadestick from Sugar Sweet.

I love them both. I like colored bases for special occasions or daily use by themselves and nude bases for under shadows in daytime (perfect since I wear shades of brown to work). The nude bases are the behind-the-scenes stars because they really help my daily shadow choices to shine and not crease but I never wear them alone.
