Do you ever buy beauty products to feel better?

Do you ever buy beauty products to feel better? Does it help? Do you regret it later?

.

Yes, but I still try to buy products I want, not just anything. I also try not to spend TOO much, just because I’m in a bad mood, so that way I don’t regret it a few days later!

I do that. I like to go visit my girlfriend at MAC and she gives me a full makeover and then I pick up a couple things (I’m a brush hoarder)… I leave looking fabulous and having picked up a couple goodies that make me smile πŸ™‚

Dusty Avatar

I sent you the answer to this one already via Twitter this morning πŸ˜‰ The short answer: YES. The longer answer: I was only going to pick up one, MAYBE two pieces from Art Supplies this week… But after getting rear ended (and yes, the insurance company told me today that my car is officially unfixable) I ended up buying almost EVERYTHING from Art Supplies. LOL! When I’m upset about something, blowing a bunch of money almost always makes me feel better.

I should add that I’m REALLY glad that I did though – The liners are freakin’ sweet (I ordered a couple more after I got my first shipment today – I want backups)! To say the texture of these Greasepaint sticks is improved from the previous ones they put out with Styleblack and D Squared would also be a MASSIVE understatement. These are SO MUCH BETTER!

Michele Avatar

Me too – I ended up buying almost the entire Art Supplies line that came out! Originally, I was only going to buy a couple but it was my birthday and I was a bit down and figured I’d treat myself. I love the liners also and so far I haven’t noticed any smell with the Greasepaint sticks and am enjoying trying them out.

Nicole Avatar

Yes, unfortunately! Haha! I was having a really tough year or two, and one day I decided that I deserved to pamper myself. Before then, I thought I liked makeup, but it was all drugstore. Now it’s spiraled into a serious makeup obsession! I might be poorer, but it makes me happy. :p

Bridgette Avatar

I do have to admit doing this. Before I would buy a bunch of beauty items that I wouldn’t use and regret it later. Now I think twice and ask myself if I need it now and how important it is to have this item?

Aimee Avatar

Yes but I always end up feeling worse so I’ve stopped doing this. I’d rather purchase make up when I’m feeling good so I’ll always want to use the item.

Denise Avatar

i do that a good 90% of the time, but it’s not random make-up shopping. I have a mental list of things i want, that i usually refrain from buying until i know i can afford it. But sometimes when i’m feeling low, i just go out and buy what i want… it makes me feel better because it’s instant gratification. I don’t regret it because it’s something i wanted <3

Sara Avatar

Me too! I do a ton of swatch Google-ing and MakeUpAlley-ing before I buy any makeup (drugstore or high end) and I feel like I rarely have things in my collection that I dislike!

Kathy Avatar

I am very guilty of buying things when I’m down or frustrated about something. It’s a nice distraction for a while, and a little bit of pampering is good for mental health!

Sephora and Bath & Body Works are definitely my biggest weaknesses. MAC counters are always fun to visit too!

Anyway, I completely agree with buying things I already have on my wishlist. Sometimes I end up with something I didn’t originally intend to buy, but that usually doesn’t happen.

Casey Avatar

Always! Buying makeup makes my whole day better. I’m at a point where I have to buy at least one beauty item every few days in order to maintain a happier mood. Its terrible but it makes me feel better and feeling good is what counts!! =)

Nic Avatar

Not often, but yeah, I’ve been known to do it once in a while. I don’t pick the stuff impulsively, though; it’s always stuff that I’ve been wanting anyway. And I don’t go crazy with it – it’s usually only an item or two.

Leenie Avatar

No I don’t buy to make me feel better, but I do buy because I love makeup and I can’t help myself when it come to buying cosmetics, I truly am a makeup junkie, no for real I am.

AlyxVeee Avatar

I buy things when they are on sale, sales make me feel good. I would probably say I’m addicted to them lol. Nothing like knowing you paid less than the last person to boost morale hahahaha =)

Hend Avatar

When i want to feel better ..
I go to a department store and grab dozens of lipglosses ..
especially the dior ones .. ( they are seductive !! )
and i end up broke >> university student tragedy lol πŸ˜›

Catherine Avatar

Honestly, this is probably the #1 reason behind most of my makeup purchases. I’m already at the point where I don’t really *need* anymore. But like a lot of people have said, makeup is really relatively inexpensive comparatively and I am always careful not to do major damage. ^.-

Chester Avatar

Usually not but that’s just because I’m most interested in cosmetics that I have to order from the US. It takes soo long to arrive and by that time it defies the ‘bad mood buy’ attribute. Now, if I’d live in the US I’m sure I’d do so more often.

Zoffe Avatar

Definitely, haha!
I usually don’t buy much just because I’m in a bad mood, but I’ll often buy something I’ve been thinking about for a long time and just haven’t gotten for whatever reason πŸ™‚

Jane Avatar

I do it ALL the time. Like you I still only buy things that I want rather than a random splurge. It seems it’s a replacement for chocolate these days!!

ModeCrazyMakeUpOn Avatar

yep definitively but as for you I try to stick to what I’ve been wantingtrying to be reasonable or to buy something I may miss or will soon

Sara Avatar

If I have the money to spend I do for sure! Of course just walking around looking at makeup can make me happier too, but being able to take it home with me is even better. πŸ™‚

Ally_D Avatar

Not often because then I feel bad for spending money! Instead I plan my purchases for the month and try to spread them out so I can buy something every week. Friday after work is my MAC day – it starts the weekend right. A little and often is how I roll. Of course that all fails though when a collection comes out and I’m there at 9am but for perm stuff this is how I do it. If the spending is planned it’s guilt free but if it’s impulsive I always feel guilty even if it’s the same amount of money.

If I want to feel better I’ll either try out a new look or eat chocolate, which might explain why I need to lose weight

Lisha Avatar

Yes, I do. It always works and I never regret it.
I usually buy a Juicy Tube or a perfume or a body butter. And whenever I feel down, I use the product and it’s got nearly the same comforting effect as the moment I bought it.

Silvia Avatar

I tend to buy things, when I did something well. So when I am already happy because I did a great job I get me some nice make up. Than I am even happier!

JB Avatar

How funny…I did this yesterday, except I was bored and not angry and I just said whatever and did a little shopping and now I have a little regret. LOL.

Emily Avatar

I’ll admit it, yes, sometimes I get makeup if I’ve had a bad day….but only one or two things, unless it’s a new release or something I’ve been wanting for a long time! =)

Charan Avatar

I do that as well πŸ™‚ . I buy lot of drugstore products even though I don’t need it. I am obsessed with finding the right drugstore foundation as nothing suits me. Its either too light or too dark πŸ™ . I have loads of lip gloss as well and I tend to buy them all the time.

Ceriene Avatar

I do~ But it’s usually things that I’ve looked at and considered for a long time, and have yet to buy. (This is why limited edition items usually sell out before I can buy them.) Even if I just pick up something small, like an eyeshadow (Benefit’s Velvet Eyeshadows are to die for), it can lighten up my day a lot. πŸ™‚

Lana A Avatar

Yeah, I really do. It’s like having a piece of chocolate, but instead you get a little beauty-related treat. I don’t buy random stuff since my collection is not that huge and there’s always something i need.

Mandy Avatar

Yep, as the matter a fact I just did.
Bourjois eyepencil and lipstick and a loreal ‘color appeal trio pro’ for hazel eyes with 50% discount!
the discount makes it ok.. right?

Cindy Avatar

Seriously, don’t we all?? And a lipstick or gloss as a ‘pick me up’ treat is WAY better than emotionally eating your way through a bag of chips or a pile of chocolate!

DonnaN Avatar

Since I will no longer be able to use food as my “feel better” indulgence, I will probably move my focus to makeup and shoes!

Cherie Avatar

Oh for sure I do! BUT I only buy products I’ve been wanting for a while. I dont want to have buyers remorse when I’m having a bad day.

Michelle Avatar

I do! It is amazing how a new blush and lipgloss make me feel pretty and then I can handle life πŸ™‚ I don’t ever spend beyond my budget — but I do spend quite a bit of my fun money on makeup and clothes!

Diana B Avatar

I actually do that quite often but they’re always things that are on my wishlist or I need. There’s nothing better than to buy something that makes you look good when you’re not feeling so well.

Erin Avatar

I DEFINITELY makeup shop when I feel down. Buying a new eyeshadow or lipgloss does the soul good. I’m trying to monitor how much I buy, though–my wallet wouldn’t be happy if I went all out! I’ve found that buying a pretty blush makes me look happier, and then I feel happier. Recently, that was Benefit’s Sugarbomb, thanks to your suggestion, Christine! It’s HG status & I wear it everyday! Do you notice that the purple triangle seems to wear down more quickly in the box, though? As if it were significantly softer? The disparity between the peach and the purple is quite odd…

Erin Avatar

Weird! Maybe my blush brush is trying to subtly tell me that I need to buy more cool-toned blushes… LOL! I’m a peach girl at heart. :]

kpenn09 Avatar

I have an ongoing list of permanent items that I want from MAC. When I get really stressed and just need to get away or take a break, I travel down to MAC by myself and pick out a few items off of my list. I usually limit myself to $50, that way I don’t go totally crazy. It’s always a nice little pick-me-up πŸ™‚ If I’m feeling super lavish, I’ll make an appointment to have my make-up done, because I find that super relaxing and lots of fun!

Evelyn Avatar

I do buy stuff for a “cheer me up.” I needed one yesterday & went to Sephora…but really, there was nothing there all that exciting so I walked out empty-handed. Now that’s shocking! lol

Theresa Avatar

I sure do! My husband hates letting me go to Sephora or Bare Escentuals after we have a tiff. He knows how angry I am by looking at how much I spend. πŸ™‚

listenlikethieves Avatar

Definitely. Like other posters have said, there’s nothing left that I *need,* but sometimes a new makeup item is great for a pick-me-up.

Brenda Avatar

oh my…..All the time. It’s bad. Lately I’ve been holding off because I always forget what it is I really wanted and buy something just because I feel sad. Then I get home and realize I probably won’t wear it that often. But it’s still pretty!!

Rosanna Avatar

Yup! I just need to buy one or two things to feel better. I don’t haul like crazy!

Sometimes just browsing in cosmetic departments, sephora or MAC is enough to make me feel better.

rose Avatar

omg! yesss! if i’m feeling down or something like that, i end up going and shopping and buying something, and i usually end up buying a lot but, like i don’t know why, it makes me feel better cause i guess i get my mind off of it

Alabee Avatar

Yep! But I only buy things that I’ve wanted for a while and really thought about. It’s more that when I’m sad or something I just have trouble resisting products I’ve been convincing myself not to spend money on for a while. I really use and enjoy and adore evey beauty product I have, since I go for quality over quantity.

Mirna Avatar

I used to. When I turned into a makeup addict I was going through 2 friendship breakups and I turned to makeup to make me feel better and prettier than those 2 girls that were hurting me. I was trying to fill in this gap that I felt with that loss. When this addiction started I bought TONS of makeup that I didn’t even open or use for months (some of it I still haven’t touched and this all started with the MAC Hello Kitty collection). The SAD thing about buying TONS of makeup is that I bought stuff that turned out to SUCK! Then after I got over those people I started being wiser with purchases, primarily because I found Temptalia! Now it’s all about research research research!!!

Thank you Christine for making me a wiser beauty addict! XOXOXO

dolce aria Avatar

Yep. Guilty. Not just because its soothing picking things out, but also because it gives me an excuse to think positively of myself, which I usually don’t do when I’m down.

esteta Avatar

I don’t impulse buy to make myself feel better. I always have a running list of products and supplies I need/want for myself or my kit, and I research the heck out of anything new before I buy. I’ve always been known to have amazing self control when it comes to shopping! However, when I do buy something, or a shipment gets here, it immediately brightens my day!

Amy Avatar

Oh definitely. Whenever I have the mood, or well, don’t have the mood to do anything else, I go shopping. Especially for beauty products. They make me so happy and forget about everything else for a short time! Although I do admit some products had been sitting there forever unused!

Antonia Avatar

I do sometimes….buying makeup always makes me feel better regardless of whether I’m sad or not..it’s like some sort of drug for me πŸ˜›

Anitacska Avatar

Yes, and they do make me feel better. πŸ™‚ Sometimes all it takes is a drugstore lipgloss. I don’t always go shopping when I’m down, but I do tend to buy more because I couldn’t give a toss about how much I’m spending, lol.

Janette Avatar

YES!!! MAC is my chocolate when i feel lonely because my hubby is deployed i go to MAC with my wishlist becuz he knows make up is my inspiration and makes me happy and creative ;D

Susan Avatar

Buying beauty products always makes me feel better but do I buy them to make me feel better or do I feel better because I buy them? What came first, the chicken or the egg?

Myrna Avatar

haha yes i do that a lot! But i only buy products that i really like and i do use them! the only bad side about it is that i probably dont have any money after that

Joy Avatar

I always have things I want to buy but I consider to be “frivolous” expenses (yay college!) so I always keep them on the backburner as things I’d LOVE to have but feel like I can’t afford at the time. When I’m feeling really down or have had a rough week, I let myself splurge and give into buying one or two of those things! I don’t really regret it because I had obviously been wanting it for awhile and it helps me not think about what’s bothering me πŸ™‚

marlene Avatar

HOW FUNNY, JUST LAST WEEK I WAS AT WORK AND HAD A BAD TUMMY ACHE AND I WENT DOWN TO MY MAC COUNTER[I WORK AT NORDSTROM BTW] AND JUST BOUGHT A BUNCH OF LIPSTICKS, OF COURSE THAT I WAS PLANNING TO BUY IN THE NEAR FUTURE. SO I SPENT LIKE $200 AND I ACTUALLY FELT BETTER. NO TUMMY ACHES THAT NIGHT :]. I HONESTLY DIDNT REGRET MY PURCHASE IF ANYTHING I REGRET BUYIUNG EVERYTHING AT ONCE BUT I AM HAPPY WITH THE PRODUCTS I GOT :]]

hrbiaggi Avatar

Yes, I do sometimes…although I only buy what I do have already on a “nice to have” list I keep over my computer desk! I don’t buy things I don’t need, for sure!

Marie-Louise Avatar

YES. Nailpolish. I am really a nailpolish addict! I donΒ΄t regret buying them though I can mostly only wear colours from eg. OPI, Essie etc. in my free time since I work for MAC and are only supposed to wear MAC at work.
Right now I am wearing Essies ‘Lilacism’ for the Easter Holidays πŸ™‚
