Mustard-y yellows and some oranges. I am not a big fan of orange on my lips!

I avoid too much gold, dark pinks/reds/oranges (at least on my eyes).
Love your site, by the way! I just recently stumbled upon it and I’ve been checking back daily ever since. 🙂

Danielle Sharkey Avatar

omg I noticed that too! For me it sucks because I do love me some coral lips but I do find that the color alters how white – or yellow your teeth look….

AlyxVeee Avatar

Its sad 🙁 I heard Gwen Steffani uses, or used, blue lipbalm (bonebell?) underneath to make her teeth whiter. Maybe that would help lol

Az Avatar

Any shade of yellow. And red, hot pink, fuschia, orange on my lips. Though ppl say I look totally ok with red and hot pink lips, I still feel weird. Any kind of dramatic eyes is welcome, but bold lips? Does that mean I’m not a confident woman XD Ahhh I wanna wear red l/s *sigh*

Casey Avatar

Eyeshadows To Avoid: Hot Pinks, Neon Yellows and Oranges.
Lipsticks/Glosses to Avoid: Black, Burn Orange Colors & Bright 80s Red. Cyndi Lauper’s Viva Glam Red Is Perfect…that is the only type of red for me.

CeeBee Avatar

Bright pink and light blues on my eyes, rust orange and dark purples and browns on my lips. I don’t really do dark, vampy lips at all, much as I would love to be able to rock them, I just look funny. :-p

Jaimee Avatar

Blue for my eyes. It just never works with me lol.
I love red lips but I just haven’t had the courage to wear it. I have red l/s but I’ve never actually worn it out in public. 😛

Kalee Avatar

i’ve tried it at work a couple of times (im a hairdresser so luckily i can get away with alot), and i always feel like everyones staring and going “WOA!”…but kind of not in a good way. i thought it looked good! so classic, like pin-up-y.
once, one of my co-workers has said “um, its really red. and bold”…….but i stopped and thought
‘hmm you know what, they arent used to it, they arent really into bolder make-up like me….red IS a bold color, duuuh, its SUPPOSED to stand out’

anyways. i know how you feel

Rosanna Avatar

Eyeshadow Colours that make me look like I have a bruised eye (some purples, red-violets, & lighter burgundies.)

I’ll wear any colour on my lips as long as it looks good but I don’t think I’ll ever wear orange, blue, green, or brown.

Salvinia Avatar

I totally agree with you about orange on the lips! I know women with the right colouring can pull it off, but I’m definitely not one of those women. I also hate any shade of brown on my lips. I’ve mentioned it before, but not only is it not attractive, it just takes me back to the mid 90’s when bright coloured makeup was taboo.
As for eyeshadow, I’m generally comfortable wearing pretty much any colour out there EXCEPT cool-toned silvers. For some reason they are super unflattering against my skin, and sadly as far as I know MAC has yet to release a warm silver (gunmetal, really, is the shade I’m looking for) that suits me.

Kalee Avatar

awwwhhh, purple looks good on EVERYONE! maybe its the type of purple. i used to think that too but i came to find out that i look better in purples with more blue in it.

Jennifer Avatar

As far as e/s is concerned any bright colors, and then you’ll never catch me in yellows, oranges or true pinks. Purple, green, and blue is about all I am attracted to color wise. When I wear color they are toned like my neutrals so they are wearable. However I’ll wear shimmery purples…I love purple. I also don’t like frosty shimmer brow bone shades.

Lipstick wise : anything goes. Seriously. Except browns and freakish odd dark colors.

lazeny Avatar

I tend to avoid pinks and yellows in eyeshadows; fuschia, plum, berry, light and overly pink on lipsticks. I also tend to avoid berry/plum shades when it comes to blushes.

Samantha0313 Avatar

Believe it or not I would have to say browns that are in the same family as woodwinked and amber lights…. it looks like I got punched in the eye !! Once Im tan again I’ll give it a try but for now….blahh

Pinch Avatar

Definitely yellow! It makes me look sickly. I’ve blue undertones and am very pale. It just doesn’t look right 🙂 It’s funny, that yellow is the colour that suits me the least, and is also my least favourite colour generally.

Diana Avatar

I avoid any lip color thats not nude or natural looking. I love the way it looks on others I just like all the attention to go to my eyes.

Celine Avatar

I am an Asian, I try to avoid orange because of my yellow skin tone. I thought orange makes me look more yellow, especially eyeshadow.

🙂

ak Avatar

But Christine you have warm toned skin, near-black hair and your eyes look dark from far away so a golden mustard yellow on the eyes and definitely an orange lipstick or gloss would look good on you.

Charlene Avatar

orange tones. I dont look good in orange tones. If I want to be on the wild side I will wear orange itself but stay away from anything with orange tones other wise.

johnfiend Avatar

i personally cant stand blue eyeshadow (though Christines last post was the MOST gorgeous blue shadow work ive ever seen)

but yeah, generally blues, steel blue, pale blue.

i LOVE orange on the cheeks and eyes, however HATE it on lips. more then anything!

😀

Sarah M Avatar

Honestly? None! Granted, some are bound to be more flattering than others but I love all colours way too much not to use them. 🙂

Michelle Avatar

Yellows and oranges — they look horrible on me! Reds don’t look good on me either — I am very cool toned, so these colours just don’t work on me.

Liz Avatar

I love to experiment with all kinds of colors of eyeshadow, but as far as using lipstick/lipgloss…that’s another story! I find only shades of pink or nude colors and the occasional bright red lip suit me. I really can’t pull off orangey or purple lips.

kfm Avatar

mustard yellow is very difficult for me, as is burnt orange. both look very unnatural and even dirty against my skin tone. anything with too much of a brown tint on my lips seems to just suck the colour right out of my face and make me look sick.

daphne Avatar

Very cool pale/pastel pinks on my lips. There are some other colors I just haven’t tried (super dark vampy lips, for example) but the pastel pinks are the only ones I can’t wear. Make me look green.

Cathy Avatar

I have a hard time wearing certain pinks and blues…everything else i can pretty much do anything else but pinks especially…I always look like i am sick when i put pink on 🙁

MakeupGalore--Abbie Avatar

I stay away from oranges and yellows and blues. I can wear the coral family only when I have a tan but I trying to stay away from the sun due to all the damage it causes. I limit myself to pinky/mauve, purples and browns. Of coarse “the smokey eye” is always in. I am going to try to venture out and try some greens. Have a great day!!

Amber Avatar

oh yes! I am waaaay to pale to pull of black. And I don’t like crazy brights, esp orange, yellow, blue – i dont think those colors flatter me at all. and any bright pinks or red toned plums make me look sick or bruised. Sometimes i wish i had darker coloring….

tremorviolet Avatar

Blue eyeshadow, it clashes with my eye color. And I love corals but have difficulty with coral lipstick, it often just looks too orange on me.

Amanda Avatar

Yellow, Orange, and Red on the eyes! I usually don’t wear Blues or Greens either, but I wouldn’t say I avoid them (I just don’t know how to wear them!)

alice Avatar

Warm browns are not flattering on my eyes. I like neutrals, but love color–sheer washes of bright color. Anything goes on lips. Blush is mid-toned neutrals, leaning slightly warm or cool. Dislike corals & pinks on cheeks just because it’s not the look I go for.

Emm Avatar

Lips I don’t like to be too avante garde unless for a special occasion. On my lids I don’t like muddy reds and yellows they make me look dead or on drugs lol

Chrissy Avatar

I haven’t really ventured into wearing bright eyemakeup in public – other than when I was on vacation. Due to work, I tend to stick to neutrals but I hope to start wearing brighter colours when I’m off duty.. Regardless, I’ll probably still stay away from reds and baby blue or any neon colours for that matter on my eyes.

As for lipsticks, I tend to stay away from dark lips.

Brooke Avatar

Reddish eyeshadows, since it just looks odd next to my red hair. They probably would have worked back when I was a blonde. And I’m not a big fan of bright pink lips, although I can do them if they’re more of a transparent gloss.

traca Avatar

I try to avoid things with red dye on my eyes, b/c I’m allergic. I love pink’s and purples, so………I limit my exposure. Going blind for the cost of beauty, lol.

Lynniekae Avatar

Pinks without a doubt. My college yearbook photo was almost a disaster bc of pink shadow. I had just started wearing makeup and didn’t know any better lol.

Ashley Avatar

Honestly, not really. Sure, there are some eye shadows that I own that don’t look amazing on my skin alone, but when combined with others for a custom shade or when blended next to other colours, they look fine. I find that cooler shades (mostly cooler blues and cooler greens) aren’t as flattering on my semi-warm skin tone. I generally avoid true reds on my eyes though, since I don’t really like red eyeshadows. I love pinks though – even though my eyelids are naturally discoloured and slightly red, I adore wearing pinks.

On my lips, unless it’s a gloss, I’d only stay away from colours that don’t match my complexion, because it’s very difficult to pull off a lipstick that is truly wrong for your complexion.

Carrie Avatar

I avoid any bright colors, especially bright blue (too 80’s). I prefer subtle makeup colors. I don’t own any red lipsticks. I find that I look best in peach, coral or bronze shades. For some reason, I can also pull off plums. I think it’s because my hair and eye color are both dark brown.

Dani Avatar

Yes, Green.

I can’t seem to ever make it work with my skin color [NW45] for some reason. I have been looking around more and I think I need to go darker in shade if I want to make it happen. Greens are so pretty, especially with brown, for that earthy look with a touch of color. I have to figure it out!

Brenda Avatar

blue (unless there’s enough gold in it), steel blue, slate, greyish muted purples, true purples…they all make me look sickly or bruised. Olive toned skin just doesn’t work well with those colours, for me anyways.
Oh and brown lips. Did that, not a good look, even 17 years ago!

Kalee Avatar

eyeshadows:
certain pinks and purples that make me look tired or like i have just been bawling my eyes out.
the silvers that oxidize weird on my skin and turn blueish on me….(i love bluish silvers, but when i want silver, i want silver, goddamnit!) lol.
bold oranges and bright yellows and golds that are tooo warm scare me, i dont think they look right on my skintone.
and orangey bronzes!!! color looks lovely in the pain, but then when i go to wear it, it looks orange and looks terrible!!!!
and for lipcolors:
i found out that i cannot wear corals that are more on the orange side….ooooo nooooo. last summer i ordered NYX round lipstick in Margarita (i think?) and when i got it i looked at it, gasped (it really is a pretty color, just not on me), tried it on, and gasped some more.

Emma Avatar

Since I have a warm skintone and cool eyes I should be able to rock most colours.. But I’ve never looked good with blues, pinks or greens on my eyes or corals and peaches on my lips, it just doesn’t work :/

Riss Avatar

Almost everything in the brown spectrum. I wear gold just cause I love it…but I can’t really wear browns or coppers or bronzes on my eyes cause it looks like I have black eye or sallow skin or something.

rose Avatar

I don’t use bright colors. I stay in the neutrals and some shades of purple and pink that are subtle and neutral.
I don’t use shimmer/glitter/pearlized shadows during the day — I go matte.
I stay clear from white (only on the corners). It makes me look ashy and horrendous with my medium skin tone.
