I ordered Rare Breed early this morning after I received the launch email. Most of the shades seemed to lean warm so I wasn’t tempted by anything else (before your review) other than the Sheer Coincidence repromote. I’m hoping the Rare Breed shades is similar to the Toledo lipglass I have that I love so much. I am curious to see your reviews on this collection though.

Weird concept, but the colors look nice? I’m interested to see how the brushes grade. However, I think I’ll save my money for the Guo Pei collection. The packaging!

Btw, it states: Brushes (Limited Editino). Just FYI. 🙂

Kylee Avatar

I don’t even know the last time I bought a MAC product besides my HG eyeshadow base Bare Study, but, you know, give me dogs and I’ll be keeping a look out for reviews. It’s completely ridiculous….do you like dogs and makeup?…but the answer is YES to both, so here I am.

DahmerDoll Avatar

I feel the same way, Kylee; I’m TOTALLY a “dog person”! I bought something from an older collection online recently, but if can’t tell you the last time I bought a “current” MAC product, including permanent items.

Kileigh Avatar

As always with MAC, the advertising and packaging is much more interesting than the product itself. Not sure what I was expecting when I saw the cover photo, but none of the products looked like anything I would want to buy, though I actually would like to buy the main photo of the matching women and dogs to hang it on my wall! It’s so beautiful!

That ad is hysterical, I don’t know how the models can even keep a straight face! It could also double as a hair ad. Lot of wearable looking colors, but I’m not buying until I see reviews first

Nancy T Avatar

Probably one of the funniest promo pics EVER! I think especially so because of the models dead-pan facial expressions, LoL! One has to wonder: just how many takes did the photographer have to take just to get this one shot?

Lacey Avatar

I won’t lie, I’ve been holding out hope for this since the Fabulous Felines (?) collection from a few years back. It’s silly, but it’s fun. I’m waiting for reviews though, because everything looks dupable.

Kelly Avatar

Cute packaging would have MADE this collection. It’s just a bunch of wearable neutrals, and I have a ton of those. The only way I would have shelled out cash for these colors is if the packaging was interesting because I have stuff that looks like dupes for all of the ones I’m interested in

Daheep Avatar

Right?! HUGE missed opportunity for doggy-decorated packaging, which would have totally lured me into buying products I otherwise wouldn’t glanced at twice. I mean, don’t we all have enough nudes & neutrals? And those of us who are just starting out; there’s plenty of drugstore/budget brands that make much more affordable, quality products.

Kat Avatar

Thirded! I do like the colors but it’s nothing that really stands out on its own. Id probably have bought everything if it had doggies on the packaging. But as is, I don’t know if I’ll get anything.

Elizabeth Avatar

YEAH SAME. I would have bought EVERYTHING if there were puppies on the packaging. But there are not. So pooh. I’ll keep waiting to see if Paul and Joe ever decides to use dogs instead of cats on their packaging.

Laura Avatar

I would buy so much of this collection (I looooove fall colors) if it had cooler packaging. I feel like they put in no effort other than interesting product names. Imagine if the products had like… paw prints embossed on the shadows, or even cute dog faces on the packaging. Just anything other than plain :/

Nancy T Avatar

This promo pic is a riot!!! The name is quite a bizarre choice, Best In Show (or Glow?) may have been less strange…
However, I am really curious to see how these puppies (pun intended!) werk-it!

Nancy T Avatar

I agree with that idea, Rachel R. Relevant, cute packaging would have gone a long way in making this collection more palatable. And donating to rescues even more so! ?

Veronica Avatar

Love the concept and promo photos, don’t care for Mineralized products at all.

I do love MAC and I usually buy a lot from the big Fall collections with three quads they have done before, but this one looks dissapointing, I might end up checking the brushes out if they are permanent.

Brytni Avatar

Christine, will u have the brushes to review?? I REEEEALLY want that 139 ? I’m interested in the 188 too, as well as one of the lipsticks, but if I’m on a tighter budget I can’t go without that 139 brush lol

Sarah Avatar

In the ad picture of just the products (3rd photo down), what’s the item between the nail polish and the lipstick? Looks like a gloss but it doesn’t seem to match any of the individual product photos…

janechemi Avatar

while i’m tempted to buy everything in this collection i really dont need another pinky brown lipstick. it feels like a very ‘safe’ collection. i can get ‘safe’ for half the price at rite aid. hopefully their holiday collection is better

Tova J Avatar

Well, this is ironic since MAC has been conducting animal testing for many years now. A man’s best friend, while they let animals being tortured to death because of their marketing choices… (I put all the blame on the company – I don’t think it’s wrong to support MAC, it’s just that I hate how Estée Lauder has ruined their cruelty-free program…). Anyway – they could have atleast made cute packaging since dogs are like the cutest beings on earth?

Daniel Avatar

Well, the cat one came out before I was interested in makeup, and I regret it so much now! I hope they come up with a new cat collection soon.

I really hoped for cute packaging and/or donating the proceeds to shelters…

Anyway, I really liked Catch my Eye (hope it performs well) and the first Palette on the pics (A Glimmer of Gold?), so I’ll wait for the reviews 🙂

GK Avatar

This is the most disappointing Fall collection they’ve ever had. Most of the colors are re-promotes. The mineralized formula is my least favorite. Doesn’t wear well & difficult to blend. Fabulous Felines had some nice colors. I usually get most of the collection. Won’t be getting anything from this one.

Anon Avatar

I can’t wait to see swatches of Shadester… is it two toned? That would be great for contouring because I like my nose contour to be lighter than cheekbones. I like the lip pencils and fluid line.

I wish they named the products after dog breeds or famous dogs instead of random “Grande Dame.” They dropped the ball on what could have been really cute packaging w/ dog prints too.

Maithe Avatar

Is this Rare Breed a dupe from Salute from the Hei Sailor collection? Can you make a dupe and compare it please, to see if it is worth it.

MarPo Avatar

I hate this collection. Besides the fact that Mac test on animals and then have animals at the forefront of a major collection, I am also offended at what this collection seems to portray. Woman are sitting next to their dog “counterparts” I guess in the old age saying that owners tend to look like their dogs. but what is this collection really saying? at first glace it could seem rather innocent, beautiful woman sitting next to beautiful dogs. but at closer inspection it is quickly understood that these woman are dressed and styled as the dogs. Why would they portray woman as dogs or dare I say… “bitches”? this collection just doesn’t seem to coincide with the same mac that i used to know. One that was transgressive and celebrated woman and their freedom to be themselves. But I guess mac now just wants to train woman to fetch after their newest collection. It just seems completely inappropriate and I for one will not continue to support this company. I have many mac products and will continue to use them until they run out but thankfully there is enough good makeup on the market that I will never again have to use another mac product.

Shirley Booth Avatar

This is just another ridiculous advertising campaign. It is offensive that you compare women to dogs! And that your products are tested on Animals, shame on you, on both counts.

Advertising back in the day was relavent and at least tasteful. This is anything but!
Another ad campaign by a man no less!
