Urban Decay Matte Revolution Lipstick ($22.00 for 0.09 oz.) is a new formula that takes the Revolution formula we’ve become accustomed to and given it more of a matte finish. There will be nine shades available. I don’t have a full press release yet, but according to Wende’s Instagram, it’s a “comfy version of matte” that will release this July 8th. As soon as I have full details, I’ll be sure to post, and reviews to come as I work through testing these 🙂

Blackmail is sooo pretty…! I’ve been purging my lippies, in order to justify a few new ones, and I think Blackmail may make the Top 10.

Is the name “1993” have anything to do with Gerard’s “1995” by chance? It doesn’t really seem like a coincidence ….

Nice colors, but still prefer the colors in BITE Frozen Berries and Maybelline Mattes more. Also don’t like the wide flat top design, prefer a bullet design, easier to apply

That matte bandwagon. lol. I think it’s funny how many “matte” releases are rather shiny but are banking on the buzzword drawing people in. This one isn’t the worst offender (BITE!!) but I didn’t feel like their original formula was super shiny once it set a bit and this looks like there’s a bit of shine, so I’m not seeing a massive difference? Happy to see more colors though, and Tilt is pretty. I think 1993 is nice too. It’s warm for me, but I like that there are warmer 90s lips options for others available. 🙂

I have tried them out at the UD conference in London and they’re super pigment rich, buttery and leave a stain so they’re pretty long wear. Yes they’re not a dry matte as they have a super minimal satin sheen on first application, but it soon disappears leaving a matte finish.

Personally I’m not a matte lipstick fan as the mattes tend to look cracked on lips and enhances dehydration lines, but these were unlike any other matte lipsticks ive tried.

Brian Avatar

They’re unlike any other mattes you’ve tried because they are clearly not matte. I think UD is confused about what Matte means. A lot of the shades look great and I’m sure a lot of people want them, especially people who don’t like the way mattes feel or look, because again, these are not matte.

The reds don’t look too bad, so they may dry down to an actual matte finish, but yeah…the rest definitely don’t look matte to my eye. Not even in the “modern” matte sense, much less anywhere near the retro true matte.

Blue Avatar

My thoughts exactly! I don’t think that word means what they think it means! haha 😛

And I don’t hold it against them for most of the colors but I’m a little skeptical about the formula for Blackmail as the coverage doesn’t look quite flawless in the picture to my eye and IME (which is a fair amount, I love colors like this) lipsticks that deep tend to slide around and wear poorly if they aren’t thick and dry enough to really set and stay put. I’d love to see it get an A+ review and just be totally wrong but it seems to happen time and time again across brands.

….is it just me or do they look very dupeable? I’m pretty sure I have these shades – from the drugstore, too – in the matte finish! Also, 1993 seems like a total knockoff of Gerard Cosmetics’ 1994… right from the shade to the name!

Since I just purchased the last 5 that complete my collection, I can say that these totally look like wet n wild matte lipstick shades, except wnw has even more and only $2! The wnw wild ones are too dry imo but mixed with their regular 99¢ ones make the perfect creamy matte type lipstick. I may have to do a swatch fest =-D

Blackmail is gorgeous! They all look great, to be honest, but I think I have dupes for them. They don’t look terribly matte, but I’m fine with that.

If I could be, say, 15 years younger…I would definitely grab up Blackmail!!! But at 56, even though people think I’m only late 30’s-40 or at max, very early 40’s, I believe this would still possibly look too harsh on me. Although….After Dark and Bittersweet look intriguing! Perhaps 1993, too!

Nancy T Avatar

Thank you! I actually used to have that older Revlon matte lipstick in the shade Vixen, very similar, my kids used to nearly die of embarrassment when I rocked my goth lip!

Aeri Avatar

Do it! I’m in my 40s and consistently wear black/blue/green lips (hell, my hair is steel blue right now). I fully plan on doing this til I crumble to dust. I’m not sure if I can justify getting Blackmail myself because I have a lot of similar colors, but I think 1993 might be calling my name because ~nostalgia~.

StrangeOne Avatar

Hmm.. I generally make the revolution lipsticks a bit matte by using sparingly and blotting. That’s good enough for me so I wonder how these matte shades will differ.

Kari Avatar

very pretty but they don’t look very matte to me :\ the colors aren’t anything special, though blackmail is *_* gorgeous. i’m surprised at how much i like 1993 too but i don’t think i’ll be getting anything.

Kelly Avatar

Ok…they don’t look fully matte, but they do look more matte than the Bite ones, which don’t look matte at all. I like the colours too, although I wish there were more.
I really like the regular Revolution lipsticks so I think I’ll like these…especially 1993, Stark Naked, Bittersweet and Blackmail. I really want to see if Bittersweet is anything like NARS Dominique…because it will be a lot less expensive and a lot easier to get my hands on the UD!
Tilt & Temper look really pretty and easy to wear too…might be hard to resist those.

Veronica Avatar

I love “Bad Blood,” but that is my absolute least favorite song on the Taylor Swift CD, so I may have to weigh it against the cost of having that song getting stuck in my head every time I pick it up…

Quinctia Avatar

Hmm…they could be more matte. But if they perform as well on me as the normal line does, I might pick up one or two if I like the shade. I’m a pretty big fan of their lipsticks. Still like the feel of the dagger line a bit better.

Oddly, I get on pretty well with matte products, so I’d probably have been even happier if they were closer to a “true” matte. But I’m more interested by this variation than I was with the sheers.

Jade Jeanete Avatar

Bittersweet looks so pretty, i love violet lip products <3 and Menace is pretty too.
And i think Stark Naked seems a little similar to melted nude form Too faced, we will see 🙂

_An_ Avatar

Wow, seems like the Matte lip look is trending this year. I had no idea UD was coming out with this new line.

Tilt looks like my kind of color. 🙂 Menace, Bittersweet, and After Dark look like some good, bold shades too.

Tasha Avatar

Menace,After Dark, and Blackmail look really pretty but I really wish it was a dryer matte formula. I only do well with the Mac type matte lipsticks otherwise I get horrible feathering no matter if I use liner or primer.

Michelle Avatar

Totally can’t wait! These are the best colours I’ve seen in ages, plus I know they will be awesome quality unlike junk drugstore lipsticks!
