YSL Opera Rose (#29) Rouge Volupte Lipstick Review, Photos, Swatches

YSL #29 Rouge Volupte

YSL for Spring 2010:  Opera Rose Rouge Volupte

YSL Opera Rose (#29) Rouge Volupte Lipstick ($34.00) is a creamy, medium pink with neutral undertones. It’s hard to find a pink that it’s blue-based, and then to find one that is more neutral or yellow in undertone is a real pleasure for me–just because it’s easier for me to wear less blue-based pinks with my skin tone.

Opera Rose is a new-for-spring shade, and it’s definitely apropos for the season. It’s not too pale or light–it’s a solid medium pink. It’s not bright either. Like the rest of the Rouge Volupte line, Opera Rose applies smoothly and evenly to lips with full color coverage and a glossy sheen. These are some of the creamiest lipsticks I’ve ever tried! They just glide on and feel amazing.

The only downside is that because of their creaminess, it tends to slip around a bit and I typically only get two or three hours of wear with them. They remind me a bit of the texture and creaminess of MAC Slimshines, but these pack on way more color (all the shades I’ve tried have been totally opaque). The packaging of the Rouge Voluptes is lovely–the YSL signature gold metal casing, but it has this nice detail around the center of the lipstick that has the YSL logo.

Pricing-wise, it’s in-line with YSL’s products and not out of the normal range for similar brands either! Not your most affordable lipstick, but it can be a nice indulgence without totally breaking the bank. I really only wish that these would last longer on lips — it’s easy to run through a tube of this if you reapply throughout the day and wear it a few days a week!

I couldn’t really get on with these, sadly, even though I bought two last time I was in duty free because the reviews were so positive! They’re very smooth and pigmented, which is good, but the downside is they’re so smooth that they’re a bit slippy and liquid, and the fragrance is so overpowering it makes me feel a bit ill! I was hoping they’d be more like MAC Cremesheens.

Ii love the look of all my RV’s but the fragrance is making me hesitant to purchase more. This shade looks so pretty, but that cloying saccharin mango scent can be a bit much. I wish YSL would lessen the scent, then I would truly buy the whole line.

Christine, can you think of any dupes for this one that arent as pricey? I tried this one last week and absolutely loved the color but I can’t justify spending $34 on a lipstick lol

I’ve swatched several of these in sephora before and the pigmentation and creaminess was wonderful… although I’d heard they don’t last too long before and that along with the price was enough to dissuade me from buying one. Do you think it would last much longer with a lipliner, or would it wear off just as quickly?

Hi Christine,

I tried it at Sephora. I really like the new peach color and wanna buy it. But it’s quite dry and accentuate the dry spot on my lip. How can I make it more moisture like your pic? Do I have to put lip treatment beforehand to get the same look?

Just wondering, between opera rose and caress pink, which one is the warmer shade? I bought Opera Pink and it is SOOOOOOOO unflattering on me. My lips have the unfortunate tendency to turn everything into a garish blue tone color that clashes horribly with my pale warm skintone:( And Caress pink looks so pretty…

I just came across this review and was quite shocked at how different mine looks from this swatch.. hmm could there be a difference between different batches? b/c my YSL opera rose is a lot brighter than your pictures. When you said it wasn’t a bright pink in the description I was surprised b/c I consider it a pretty bright pink and then I saw your swatches and they look very different from mine. Mine looks more like this one I came across while searching for more swatches:

but I also some swatches that looked more like your swatches too. weird!
