ColourPop Vice Ultra Matte Liquid Lipstick
ColourPop Vice Ultra Matte Liquid Lipstick ($6.00 for 0.11 fl. oz.) is a light, pink-tinged peach with warm undertones and a matte finish. This was one of the worst shades in the range, because it applied unevenly. It was extremely challenging to get decent application–the photos in the post are the fourth attempt. Normally, I like to apply color to the top and bottom lip separately, but I had the best success by applying heavily to my bottom lip and then pressing my lips together and quickly finishing the top lip. When I tried to apply a second coat (after waiting fifteen minutes to ensure the first had completely dried down), it looked extremely thick and uneven. This one dries down very, very quickly. The color lasted fairly well for six hours but faded away more quickly from the center of the mouth and left more of a ring of color after four hours, and I hadn’t had anything to eat or drink during that time. It was lightly drying after the fifth hour of wear. Anastasia Pure Hollywood (P, $20.00) is darker, warmer. MAC Riot House (LE, $16.00) is lighter, warmer, glossier. ColourPop Sundae Ultra Matte Liquid Lipstick ($6.00 for 0.11 fl. oz.) is a brightened, medium fuchsia-pink with lighter violet micro-shimmer over a matte finish. This one was a surprise, as it is the only shade in the range with shimmer–like a matte frost, but the shimmer is very fine. It was mostly opaque, though some of the natural lip comes through, and it applies a little streakily. Luckily, it is such a bright shade that it distracts from any visible streaks. The color lasted for eight and a half hours with minimal, even fading while the shimmer seemed to travel slightly over time. It was slightly drying after six hours and then drying enough to want it off by the eighth hour. Tom Ford Beauty Electric Pink (15) (P, $50.00) is less shimmery, glossier. Tom Ford Beauty Justin (LE, $32.00) is lighter, glossier. Kat Von D Backstage Bambi (P, $19.00) is less shimmery, lighter. Kat Von D Lullabye (P, $21.00) is more shimmery, darker, less glossy. Kat Von D Sexer (P, $21.00) is more shimmery. Melt Cosmetics Shady Lady (P, $19.00) is less shimmery, darker, glossier. Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Yaoi (P, $18.00) is more shimmery, glossier. Too Faced Melted Fuchsia (P, $21.00) is less shimmery, glossier. Tom Ford Beauty Pablo (LE, $32.00) is lower quality, less glossy. NARS Michiyo (P, $32.00) is lower quality, less glossy. Formula Summary: ColourPop Ultra Matte Liquid Lipstick ($6.00 for 0.11 fl. oz.) is a long-wearing, pigmented lipstick that starts off glossy and dries down quickly to that super flat matte finish. They have minimal transfer with some of the lighter shades having almost none for the first few hours of wear, but any time you’ve had a meal, they lose that transfer-resistant quality to a noticeable degree. They tend to wear anywhere from six to ten hours with darker shades maintaining better color coverage and wear over a longer period of time. Some shades get a little drying about two-thirds to three-fourths through the wear, while a few shades have been fairly non-drying even many hours into wear. They fade away evenly with most color loss occurring from the center of the lips if eating a more oil-based meal but the majority of color survives a meal. Reapplication has been hit or miss and tends to depend on how well it wore away and how easily the shade applies normally, but reapplication tends to emphasize the lip’s natural texture significantly compared to initial application and gives lips a very wrinkled, dried-up look. I’ve layered gloss on top of some shades with moderate success, though it will obviously lose the matte finish and will transfer and I’ll get tiny flakes where the matte lip color has lifted by mixing with gloss but has been pretty minimal. The formula had no discernible taste or scent. After playing with the packaging, it seemed like 16 of the 25 shades I received were significantly overfilled and had regular overflow of liquid lipstick coming out of them for about 10-15 open-and-closes where I needed to use a makeup removing wipe to clean the rim of the tube prior to closing or else the lipstick would ooze out of the closing. I have not had this issue with any of my other liquid lipsticks (Anastasia, Hourglass, Kat Von D, Make Up For Ever, Stila) personally, though readers reported experiencing similar issues with Anastasia and the previous Kat Von D packaging.

Not a big fan of Vice – it would give me concealer lips. Sundae reminds of Revlon Ultra HD Lip Gloss in Tourmaline except it’s all matte, but the color, brightness, and shimmer look similar.
Definitely see the resemblance in color to Tourmaline!
Ooooh Sundae looks nice! Maybe I’ll have to rethink what I said before about these not being for me… 🙂
Haha! 😉
Really love the idea of microglitter combined with a matte finish. This might push me to place an order to at least get Sundae, even though I am worried about product leaking/spilling! Something like this would never wash off a purse!
It at least makes it more interesting! 🙂
I’ll admit I was a bit skeptical when I read “matte-frost” – it didn’t seem like it would work but it surprised me. I think the shimmer helps the matte not look so dry.
It does work, I think!
Loooving the violet micro-shimmer in Sundae. However, this line from CP is going to be a pass for me. I have somewhat thin lips that already get dry easily, so these would just exacerbate the problem. Much prefer a creamier matte. Hopefully they come out with a line I love next, like eye liners or even liquid eye liners. Oooooh. Yeah, me likey that idea.
I totally understand! These matte formulas are harder on dry lips!
I love the shimmer in Sundae! It makes it unique enough for me to warrant buying it but what a bummer about Vice. I like those pale nudes but it seems to be a tough formula to pull off. I’m lucky, you reviewed my top 4 shades before they’re released so I know which ones to pick up first!
We must be on the same wavelength 😉
Ugh, Vice wasn’t on my list, but the more I look at it the prettier it is. Still debating although I’m thinking it’ll be super bright on me!
Not Vice, Sundae!! Never Vice lol
It probably will be bright!
was kind of hoping they’d attempt to reformulate to get the streakyness fixed before they sell.. hmm…
i’ll probably buy some anyways.. colourpop is my absolute favorite band right now.
Hope you like them!
I’ve been hearing nothing but bad things about these liquid lipsticks…ugh! I had such high hopes.
I like some of them – don’t think they’re bad, but some of them are misses for sure.
Ouiji is on my list…I have my fingers crossed.
The shimmer in Sundae kind of makes it remind me of MAC Show Orchid! Actually, looking at swatches, they’re kind of similar. Maybe not exact dupes, but it give the same “feeling,” in my opinion.
They have a similar color composition, but the finish is sooo different!
I have liked every swatch of Sundae I saw so far. I think this lipstick alone will be the reason I put an order from ColourPop after resisting the eyeshadows and highlighters. Of course they will also be ordered along, once I order something what’s the point of just getting one lipstick? 😉
Sundae is fun! 🙂
I’ll probably end up picking up Sundae and Trap once the Hype Train comes to a complete stop.
Enjoy 😀
I normally shy away from bright pinks (no problem rocking bright purple and bold reds though) but Sundae is calling my name it’s so beautiful!
I like the added shimmer!
Eh, Vice was too light for me anyway. Sundae, though…YES! I think that will be the first shade I buy.
Those light shades are so often troublesome!
I couldn’t rock it, but Sundae is so pretty!
It is a pretty one!
I’m loving Sundae!
Yay!
Christine, have you tried wearing a lip balm over any of these? They are a bit too dry looking for me but I wonder if non glossy lip balm might help add a bit of moisture without too much shine.
Not yet!
Good grief, Vice reminds me of Myth gone bad, like crack-addict bad! Yuk! But, on the other hand, Sundae looks stunning!!! I’m not so sure I could deal with any of the matte liquid lipstick formulas, but if I could, it would be Sundae for sure!
Sundae is a fun one!
This made me laugh in an unattractive way. I love that so much! 😀
Sundae was a pleasant surprise for me too. I’m so glad that it doesn’t look frosty!
It’s just the right level of shimmer to be interesting and noticeable but not super frosted or metallic!
There is just somthing ablout pale colours in these matte formulas that just doesn’t work. It’s a shame that VICE is following this trend because I really wanted that one.
Sundae is a really vivid shade, I wasn’t expecting the shimmer either.
There is four other shades I want to get out of this line so I’m crosssing my fingers they will behave better. Your swatch of VICE looked good though, so now I’m waiting. lol
I need to find a way to get more of the LA Splash ones for cheaper. The exchange rate is kind at 30% right now to CAN so I have to budget for that. 😉
I thought it was interesting how only ONE of the 25 had shimmer. When I saw Sundae had shimmer, I got a little excited thinking there would be others, lol.
I know that LA Splash as a line of matte with shimmer ones called Studio Shine Lip Lustre. That combo is rare, I’ve only seen one more in the Anastasia Beverly Hills line.
As much as blue based bright fuchsia is my Ultimate Lip Color Nemesis (as much as it lights up your complexion, it would deaden mine –woe!), the matte frost situation makes me misty eyed for MAC Wild Bout You.
More matte frost hybrids in general would be great. I’d buy lots of it.
I totally agree. It would at least shake things up 😉
Don’t care for Vice but it does look like the pale late 60’s colors like the James Bond girls. Cadaverish.
Sundae is pretty but I have quite a bit of similar colors.
When you are testing do you actually go. 8-10 hours without drinking? I could never do that but do take some meds that make my mouth very dry.
If it’s 8-10 hours, I do eat/drink with it on, as there’s no way not to 🙂 Otherwise, I tend to time products before/after meals.
Thanks. I really wondered if that was why I can’t keep lipstick on my lips, even liquids and stains. I didn’t think you normally would have gone so long but thought maybe for testing you did. Not sure if I’d had anything last even an hour though. Tried primers, no primers, balm, no balm, lip lingered and no lipliner. Drives me crazy.
I think if I get one of these, it’d be Sundae. While hot pink is fairly dupable, and matte hot pink is getting there with the matte trend, I love seeing it with the shimmer added in!
Too bad there aren’t any other shades with it. I’d love seeing a matte red with gold, or a violet/berry with pink.
ME TOO! It makes it more unusual!
Yes!!! To the matte red with gold! I’d buy that in a heartbeat. And I was also hoping to see some unusual colors for this launch, like blues, greens, etc (like when colourpop first launched its Lippie stix)
Vice looks really hard to pull off. Sundae is everything though! I love seeing shimmer in liquid to matte lipsticks. It takes them to a whole new level
Sundae is fun!
YES , YES , YES for sundae !
i actually didn’t know it had shimmer until i saw your sneak peek .
an unexpected , but nice surprise for sure .
🙂
Agreed!
I really appreciate the detailed formula summary and all the different things you tried with it. Matte lipsticks, especially ultra mattes like these, are so high maintenance. I think I’d be so self-conscious about how it’s fading and keep checking myself in the mirror all day long. lol
Glad I could share 🙂
I think I can pass on both of these. I like Sundae, but to me, fuchsia is fuchsia.
Gotcha!
When are these coming out?
