Sneak Peek: ColourPop Ultra Matte Liquid Lipsticks Photos & Swatches (First Impressions)

ColourPop Ultra Matte Liquid Lipstick ($6.00 for 0.11 oz.) is a new formula that will launch on June 25th with 25 shades ranging from light beige to chocolate brown. It takes a really long time to work through and wear each of these as they are typically longer-wearing (six to ten hours), so I can only try one shade a day (while still needing to test other lip products), which means it’ll be awhile before I have full reviews for all of the shades. I am certainly hoping to review them all, but I’m not sure when I’ll finish that up. With that being said, I thought first impressions (I’ve worn three shades so far and applied all shades at least once, some two or three times) might be useful in addition to full photos and swatches.

First Impressions
Packaging woes: About a fourth to a third of my tubes are leaking/spilling/pooling over. I’m not sure where the weak point is, but there is a ton of excess liquid accumulated on the interior rib where the cap screws on (it’s the top of the part of the tube that contains the gloss, where the wand pulls out of) and when you screw the top back on, all of this excess is squeezed out and runs everywhere. This is my biggest concern, because this is an unforgiving formula to have leaking in a bag (not that any makeup product leaking is going to be a fun time). So far, I haven’t had any leak out once I’ve closed and cleaned off all of the excess product that has oozed out (e.g. all 25 of them laying horizontally on a table), but the product does keep spilling over the edge. I’m still trying to figure out what’s happening/keeping an eye on them to see if they continue. I snapped a couple of photos and posted on Instagram to show what I mean.
Inconsistency in texture and application: A lot of the shades applied really smoothly with rich color payoff, while a few were sheerer, streaky, or patchy. I applied all troublemakers three times in hopes of it being my ineptitude, but these three were perpetually poor once applied: Vice (streaky, do not attempt to apply a second coat), Zipper (sheerer, patchy), Lax (uneven/patchy). Some of them have a thinner consistency and others have a lightweight but not thin consistency, and the ones with a thinner consistency dry quickly. I felt like I had to really rush with these and had no leeway to get crisper lines if desired. They do not layer well at all, so it’s one shot; if it doesn’t look right, remove entirely and reapply. Some of the thicker shades go on with intense, smooth color but have a tendency to crack more noticeably once dry. The darker, thicker shades took the longest to dry (Lax, Tulle). Your best bet is to apply quickly and get it to be mostly even/smooth and let it dry down, as liquid lipsticks tend to level a little and dry to a smoother finish than you’d think they would.
Kind of kiss-proof: I’ve only tried three, and they’re mostly kiss-proof, but not totally and you’ll want to do a “kiss-off” on the back of your hand about five to ten minutes after applying to ensure a more kiss-proof finish. I had very subtle color on the rim of my coffee cup with one of the darker shades, and I kissed my husband (lightly!) about an hour and a half after application, and he noticed a little reddish stain on his coffee cup (he was very sure to call me to tell me “It’s not kiss-proof! Don’t put that in your review!”).
If you like liquid lipstick, they’re probably going to be worth checking out: except for packaging (see above) concerns, these felt a lot like your typical matte, liquid lipstick formulas. They are not a hydrating, ultra-comfortable lipstick formula, so if you like your balm-like lipsticks, these are not them. They are ultra-matte, lightly clingy, longer-wearing, and get drying after several hours of wear. The price point is attractive, and they contain the same as liquid lipsticks like Anastasia and Stila, but Kat Von D has almost double the amount (and this is my preferred formula for matte, liquid lipsticks). They will break down with oil (whether that’s an oil-based salad dressing you’re having with lunch or using it to remove them at the end of the day).

A great many of them(like, most, except the darkest shades – or is it just on camera?) seem to have a lot of white base to them – doesn’t it get chalky?
I’ve only worn a few!
For the price point these are pretty good! Hopefully they’ll fix the packaging in the upcoming months, but the color range is quite nice. I’ll definitely pick up a few!
I wish I could figure out what’s causing the excess lipstick to accumulate along the top! Hopefully after leaving them to sit out and potentially leak all over, I’ll have some more insight!
Some of them are TO DIE FOR, especially the brighter ones (they look so delightfully neon!), but my lips are on the drier side so I may have to pass 🙁 I can still get away with their lippie stix matte formula though, would you say that these ones are dramatically more drying?

I haven’t worn enough of them to say if they are more drying than their regular matte formula, but so far they are comparable.

Christine will come up with some great ones but for now I’d look to sort of tomato-ish reds to get a similar color. Like MAC Lady Danger and its dupes might be a good direction to search in. Something that has a kind of coral, tomato aspect.

This texture isn’t super flattering for me, personally. Also, since you’ve tried all these different brands, do you think they’re all the same liquid lipsticks sold by different brands? They all kind of look the same (texture wise, not color).
No, they’re slightly different, much like lipstick – there are usually slight tweaks – you’ll usually see it in how it dries down, smoothness of application, and how they break down/fade over time.
I like the color selection. I can pass on these, though, due to the dryness factor.

So far, I haven’t noticed any just… leaking onto the table from sitting out, but they are pooling along the rim of the edge of the gloss (where you screw the cap back on), and when they get bad, then all of that excess oozes out as you twist on the cap. I’m wondering if they overfilled these, but I’m not sure really.
Man, there are some really pretty colors in this collection—I know they will kill my lips but the colors are really hard to resist! Your lips must have been killing you by the end of all of the swatches–thank you for doing them!
I spread them out over two days, which helped a little, LOL! Liquid lipsticks take so long to swatch (two hours to swatch fifteen shades… normally half that time or less for regular lipsticks).

I’ve been looking for a replacement for my Nars Dragon Girl lip pencil (both in colour and matte-ness) and Creeper looks promising. Don’t think I can get hold of colourpop here though (sadly, I love so many of the eyeshadows from them you’ve reviewed!) – any other suggestions?
Shame about some of the patchier shades, Zipper in particular looks like a lovely colour.
They’re very matte for sure. 🙂 If you like liquid lipstick-matte, there are a lot of formulas these days – Kat Von D, Anastasia, Hourglass, Stila, MUFE Aqua Rouge. Guerlain Rouge G de Guerlain L’Extrait doesn’t have the same ultra-matte finish but is similar to some degree.

I definitely like the range of shades. 25 shades is a pretty ambitious initial launch, I would think, and I love that there’s so many shades of purple! But the cheap packaging/leaking tubes is unforgivable. I get trying to keep the price point down but if the packaging isn’t reliable it’s an absolute dealbreaker.
I haven’t had good luck with liquid lip color OR matte lipstick in the past, so I think these would be drying af on me. That being said I love ColourPop’s non-matte Lippie Stix and I’ve had really good luck with their shadows. I’m looking forward to future releases but I’ll be skipping this.
They probably will be. I don’t think they’ve reinvented or really innovated on the liquid lipstick formula from what I can tell thus far (it’s not like it is magically ultra-hydrating while still wearing for 12 hours!).

I think it’s a little overkill to say that we “can’t trust the reviewers on YouTube” that love this brand. Colour Pop is one of my favorite brands. I’m not a reviewer/YouTuber, just a regular consumer that has purchased many Colour Pop products, about all of which I love. It’s all about personal preference. Just because you had a bad experience with the brand doesn’t mean it’s a bad brand. This situation is far from black and white.
My thoughts exactly Amanda. All brands and I mean ALL brands put out a bad or below average quality product at some point; with Colourpop it was only a matter of time! Especially with their enormous and super fast growth over one short year’s time. It doesn’t make them a bad brand or the reviewers dishonest. I am not a you-tuber or blogger and I absolutely love all my Colourpop stuff so far (lippie stix, shadows and highlighters and I have about 40 different products of theirs now). I tell all my friends to check them out because I truly think they’re an awesome new brand.

Or different people have different opinions? I’m not a blogger, I’m just your average makeup consumer & I love Colourpops highlighters & lip products to death. Everyone’s chemical make up is different so the product may react differently to your face than to others. I’ve had zero issues with packaging, and I’ve ordered from them 4 times.
I’m sorry but I first saw a review for colour pop a long time ago,all they had were the original supershock shadows,and the youtuber that reviewed them isn’t a big name,I ordered shadows and got a free lippie stick & pencil at the time they had 5 shades.I liked everything I received,and some of the people I watch say when they don’t like a product from colour pop so maybe dial back the attitude, and chose who you watch more carefully because yeah just like any industry there are fakes in it for the wrong reason but you can’t lump everyone in one category,its not their fault you don’t like the brand
Succulent,Sundae,Bumble,Solow are calling for me! but they’re look painful dry to wear.Are they dryer than Kat Von D? because right now KVD was the only liquid lipstick that I can used and not look like I need a 10 glasses of water. LOL I can’t wait for your full reviews!
KVD remains my favorite of the liquid lipsticks I have tried as it is more forgiving across the board. I haven’t worn enough of them yet to say if they are drier or not than KVD, though.
Wow, thank you for these swatches! I’m kinda interested in these because they’re new and cheap, but I’m not sure if I will like the matte formula. I’m not much of a matte girl. I tend to rub my lips together a lot too.

Some of my favourite moisturising liquid lipstick formulas are Makeup Monsters Cosmetics, Jeffree Star Cosmetics, Lonely Planet Co (on Etsy), and Give Me Glow (also Etsy). My favourite budge proof liquid lipsticks are Coloured Raine and LASplash Cosmetics.
I would love to try the Sephora liquid lipstick ranges and Kat Von D but we only have one Sephora in Australia and it is not in my city =(
I totally thought it was, because I gave him a peck goodbye, and checked and didn’t see anything. LOL, he brought home the coffee cup so I could see. There was definitely transfer, haha.
Zipper, one of the shades you said was streaky is very similar to MACs Heroine by the looks of it which is also a matte if anyone is truly enamoured with the shade.

The shade range is phenomenal, but they just seem way too… messy, I guess you could say. Will definitely be sticking to the Kat Von D Liquid Lipsticks. Thanks for the sneak peek! 🙂
KVD is more forgiving – longer drying time but not too long, IMO. Some of these were easier to work with, but omg, some of them it was like, “Oh, that’s a botched application job, let me start over!”
Some of these look ok, but most look way too matte for my taste…

Oh no! I’m heartbroken. I don’t like ultra-matte liquid lipsticks (usually too drying and colors look neon bright on me), but I like to keep a couple in my stash for when I need my lipstick to last all day. But the 3 colors I was eyeing (Zipper, Lax, Tulle) are the trouble-makers 🙁 I’m holding out some hope for Tulle. And I can see what you mean by having to work fast before it dries on lips– I think a lipliner will help prevent crooked lines. And what is up with the packaging issues???? It’s only $6 for the lippie but if it ruins a purse and its contents, could end up costing a lot more
Tulle might be salvageable. Vice wasn’t. That was the worst for sure!
Awesome review! I must say, I was super excited that they created so many light colors. On the lips though, they seem very pastel-y and white-based. I’m definitely going to b pick some up, but not as many as I was originally thinking. Thank you for this!

Donut looks a lot like what I wanted Retro Coral to look like (it was too neon for me when I got it). If liquid lipstick fools me twice shame on me though xD I like Vice but I can only imagine how drying it is and you said it’s streaky… I think I’ll try their Addict lippie stick instead.
Vice is a definite skip just because of application – unless you are really patient, wear a lip liner, and maybe manipulate with a brush or sponge… I’m not sure. It was the first I tried and was horrific the first application, and I tried waiting and doing a second coat, but that looked even worse (just super thick and heavy in appearance). I went back to it after I tried more, because others applied smoothly in one go (no effort/special technique, lol!) but still problems with Vice.
How do they compare to the other Instagram brands such as lime crime, Anastasia Beverly Hills, Jeffery star?
Sorry, I haven’t tried Lime Crime or Jeffree Star’s products. I haven’t worn enough of these to make a good comparison between these and Anastasia’s formula so far, but they seem somewhat similar.
Christine do you have any plans to try Jeffrey Star’s liquid lipsticks? I don’t have any but saw he just launched a trio of AMAZING blue colors so fingers crossed they pique your interest to review! 🙂

I wonder how similar these are to the soft matte lip creams from NYX. Those tend to crack when layered as well.. Reading your first impressions made me remember them and since they have a similar price point I wonder how similar these two are. I like the NYX soft matte lip creams but they’re not as good as the higher end liquid lipsticks like the Kat Von D ones.
I think NYX’s Soft Matte Lip Creams have more give, so they can be a little more forgiving.
Are my eyes deceiving me or sundae looks like it’s got more depth in colour. It almost looks metallic.
I recently tried kat von and my lips were very happy. I was hoping this would be comparable. I’ll still get a few because at this price point, why not.
So far, I still prefer KVD – I feel like it is a little more… flexible? in a sense, even after it dries down. I’m on my fourth CP one so we’ll see 😉
Sundae does have shimmer in it (it’s the only one that does) 🙂
Great colors!! I love Bumble, Ouija, Tulle, and Sundae (ultra liquid matte with iridescence?!). However I doubt I’ll buy any since I didn’t love their lipsticks and these seem fussy. Unless one of the ones I like gets an A.
Liquid lipstick is always fussy to me, but you get the occasional few that apply really well!
I’ll be amazed if you manage to test half of these. Your lips are troopers!

This is the price point I’m willing to try liquid to matte lipsticks at, though I’m not encouraged by the spilling. What would happen if I tried layering a regular lipstick of the same color over one of these for touch ups instead of bringing the faulty package with me and risking my bag?

Haven’t played with the formula much beyond just testing the wear of it on its own, so I’m not sure how they’ll interact with gloss/balm/lipstick on top yet!
Are the lipsticks making it diifficult to smile? I notice you usually have a big smile when you swatch but since these are so drying is it hard on the lips and might crack the lipstick or your lips? This is a stupid observation but I tried a matte lipstick years ago and it was drying on the lips on top of having dry lips from lack of water that when I smiled it literally causes the skin on my lips to split and bleed I really want bumble bit cracks in the lips huuuuurrrrtttt so much
I haven’t had any actual peeling/cracking on my *natural* lips with the formula yet, but if they are super drying, then that is a consequence that can occur. The ultra-matte dry down of these can cause “cracking” in the color, but it depends on the thickness/give of the formula itself.
Zipper looks like a good dupe for Anastasia BH Vintage, which is NEVER on their site anymore.

Hmmm yes, I like smooth emollient formulas so you’re right, these are probably not for me. I do love the range of colors though, wow. There really is something for everyone.

They kind of look like the old peel on & off mattes, like you just peel this off.. I’m cringing at the matteness.. I so want to plump you up with balm and gloss & relieve those lips! Obviously they are quite popular!(I own 2, but one burns me!) But even ColourPop’s ultra-mattes do not look like chalk as they still retain a lip’s dimensional shape & have not the look like tissue paper pull offs.. 🙂

After all the stellar reviews by the YouTube gurus I thought colourpop has come out with a spectacular liquid lipstick that no other company has been able to master so far. But turns out these are no better or worse than the available brands. I am not even a fan of the KVD brand that you like. I will definitely buy a couple of these lipsticks but without unrealistic expectations. I was so starting to lose hope in these misleading reviews of some blogs and videos. You are a start and a sweetheart of us beauty junkies
I’m definitely not seeing anything revolutionary with the formula – like you said, no better or worse, which has been my feeling thus far. This will be the most liquid lipsticks I’ve tried from a single brand, though, so we shall see how they end up doing!

They just look horrid on. Dry, chalky, like they are glued onto your lips, cakey around the edges, patchy… and what is with all the white based neons? Sephora did the same thing with their revamped cream lip stains and almost all of them are unwearable for me now.. they were one of my favorite products before.. and they got rid of the good shades. Maybe they are going for pigmentation and just messing it up? Shocked and disappointed, and that’s not even considering the packaging fail. I love long wear lippies but I’m not touching those until a change is made.

I was kinda excited when I started seeing Youtubers swatching these but now seeing up close swatch pics, not so much (one of the many reasons I like your reviews more!). Some of the colors are really pretty but I’m not nuts about the finish. I knew they were matte but I don’t know…maybe it’s too matte. The good things is they’re only $6 each so you won’t break the bank even if you try a few and hate it. Looking forward to full reviews!
They are super, super matte. Like if you thought “matte” lipsticks by most brands were matte… liquid matte is a different level!
IDK if “Ultra Matte” is synonymous with ultra dry, but most of them look almost painfully dry on the lips IMHO. That alone makes them a pass for me. Bonus points to ColourPop for price point, and a great color selection, though those defective tubes would drive me crazy.

I think I might have to give a few of these a try. I especially like Bumble and Tulle. I often wear chapstick/lip balm over matte lipsticks because I like to rub my lips together a lot so I like a bit of slip, but sometimes it makes the lipstick smeary. I’d be curious if that happens with these.
I tried gloss over one and that worked out okay, but I haven’t tried balm yet.
I’m not very excited about this ColourPop launch. 🙁 I feel like matte liquid lipsticks have been done to death. Some really pretty colours here, such as Bumble, but liquid lipsticks aren’t a must-have for me (I have a few Kat Von D ones and that’s more than enough).

Some of these colors look great, but when you write about the super-fast dry times it worries me a bit. I have hard enough time managing to get the more fluid liquid mattes to look good sometimes (I find the thicker formulas like NYX and Rimmel’s easier to manage) but often it ends up as a mess and I have to start over. 😛 So I don’t think I’ll rush out and order a ton of these like I have with Colorpop’s other lipsticks.
Some of them have a more workable dry down time, but some of them start drying down before you even finish one lip!
Wow there’s a lot of colors I love. Trap, Bumble, Donut, Koala, Lychee, Sundae, Mars, Tulle… Ok I need to narrow it down to 2 or 3 max to see if I can deal wth the formula and packaging issues first though. I wish I already knew which ones were your favorite so I could order as soon as their launched! I love the price point, I’m excited that they’re not raising all their prices (which I was worried about because all their new products are $8 instead of their “everything is $5” claim last year!) but honestly i kinda wish they’d charged a bit more and made a more stellar product. I might hold out to see if they fix their packaging issues soon before I buy… I mean they obviously pay close attention to your reviews so I have high hopes that they will fix this! I’m not sure any will speak to me, but we’ll see 🙂 Favorites tend to be stuff I really like and would wear, and I prefer more sheen to my lipsticks in general, so it’s a tough hill to climb to fall in love with something so matte!

Hnnng, these are gorgeous *_* I’ve only recently gotten into the liquid lipstick thing, despite my love in the warmer season for balm-type finishes. I feel like Bumble and Tulle are really lovely neutral shades, but Ouiji and Pacific look like cute summer colors. Tbh I prefer the look of satin finishes better, but those four shades are crazy grabbing my attention! The packaging concerns me. After the NYX High Voltage Lipsticks I’m not sure I want anything messing up my purses or makeup bag. But these colors! I’m gonna have to keep an eye on the tubes because I definitely want to try a few of these

I have a question and I’m sorry if this sounds really dumb to some. I have never once worn matte liquid lipstick, so I just really don’t know. Once this dries, if you drink or lick your lips does the formula then start to become a liquid again? Secondly, when this is dry, does it feel like you have a thin layer of like glue on your lips? I would appreciate some insight as I am considering trying this formula or another brand but I hate throwing my money in the trash ya know?
It doesn’t turn liquid again if you are eating or drinking or if you lick your lips. If you add lip balm or gloss, you can get a more liquid-y texture – never as thin or as liquid-like as it was initially. Lipgloss on top makes it feel more like a creamy lipstick.
Some of them are clingier than others!

have never tried liquid lipsticks before just because i’m a huge fan of glossy lips.
was thinking about trying a couple of these out, but i just can’t seem to like the way super matte lipsticks look on lips. just looks so 2 dimensional while everything else on the face looks so… 3 dimensional!
mars does look really pretty though. >.<
If you don’t like ’em, skip ’em! 😉 The finish is one of those that some love but others for sure hate!

Do you think Solow and Succulent are good in texture and application. I have medium/indian skin tone and my lips are dry but do you think wearing a lip balm underneath these matte liquid lipsticks will be fine? I am looking for a soft pink….which one would you recommend me…Solow or 1st base? Nude colors never looked good on me. They look too neon on me.
These are clingier than either, though they are a bit like Ruby Woo in the way they cling. Less creamy than the Soft Mattes. I’d go Solow. 1st Base is brighter.
Hey Christine, I returned to this post after receiving my order of these to check out your photos of Buds. I picked up that one, Midi, Solow, Trap, Tulle, Bumble, Koala, Mars, and Lychee. They all perform amazingly (so far!) except for Buds, which I picked up in part because the photo here looks so amazing. Unfortunately, Buds is very streaky on me. I can get it to look all right but it takes quite a bit of TLC. Did you experience similar issues with this color, and if so how did you get it to look so great on you? I love the color and will still wear it, but I’m definitely looking to improve it if I can. Thanks!
Also, I’d like to just comment on the leakage issue and mention that mine had no issues on that front! They’re holding up great so far!

Luckily my first order was for only 2 but after seeing this, I’m able to be selective lol!!..I would have really disliked these had I gotten some blaring neon pink, I am not a neon person at all! I loved bumble, tulle, trap & solow…trap was much prettier than it was described on the colour pop site! It looks more like it’s on the mauve side and I like that. And some of the other colors were too much for me – I would look nuts coming into work with some of those yet for others, it may be their thing. I’m sad to report my first order did include zipper :/ – way too purple for me, I thought it would be more berry in tone. (the colour pop site is deceiving, that’s a siren purple!! lol) – But thanks to you, I did really good on my 2nd order! I try to always look for your swatches before ordering – you are very appreciated!

I really like these. They did flake on me a bit but they do have good lasting power. So far I’ve gotten Bumble and Midi. One thing I noticed is the colors are much different to what I saw in your reviews. It’s probably to do with my monitor settings but I found Midi to be more pink and Bumble was like a muted brick red.
Flakes don’t bother me that much and Bumble lasted hours on me, so I would buy them again, especially considering the price.

I ordered 5 of them. They came in perfectly packaged with no spilling. All of mine had consistent texture & I love how light they are! I’ve never tried any liquid lipstick like them. They’re so much lighter (vs heavy) than Stila, Kat Von D, Anastasia BH, or NYX. Also, I’m very happy with the speed of shipment. I ordered them on a Friday afternoon, & they got to me Monday morning. So comfortable & so gorgeous… def my top lip product of all time.
Oh, & also I didn’t find them drying like other liquid lipsticks.
I will continue to repurchase.

I love some of these colors! I have only recently tried liquid lipstick, the Ofra ones. I really like the formula, but the color range isn’t as great. What brands do you recommend most; what are your favorites? I’ve heard many of them can be drying, which I definitely don’t want. I’d love to hear your recommendations!
Thanks for making a note of how this liquid formula isn’t balmy. I do value comfort in a matte formula, but I decided to buy one of these liquid matte lipsticks (Bumble) to try the formula out for myself, but mostly because ColourPop doesn’t have a dupe of that shade available in their matte lippie stick formula.
I got the Foxy kit (mini’s) during the holiday sale and I have to say I love them! They don’t seem as drying to me as other brands I have tried and the kit is great, because if you aren’t sure what to get, you can try 5 out. I’ve liked all of the colors in the kit: Beeper, Clueless, Tulle, Creeper & More Better. I wipe off excess liquid at the top to put on a lighter layer, as the colors appear too dark on my light skin, unless I do this.
