Do you try a look after watching a makeup tutorial?

I don’t! I only watch a few, but I have a terrible habit of playing a video and then immersing myself in writing or editing, and I tune everything else out.

I binge watch makeup tuts, i’ve tried a few (the easy ones basically) but the majority of times i’m like i should do this/that and then i watch another tut and i forgot about the last one i saw and oh well.

Most of the time I don’t, simply because I cannot, for the life of me, grasp the ability to use 5-6 eye shadows for one look and not get a mud-colored mess on my lids 🙂 3 is my maximum and that includes a brow bone highlight.

I use the videos to pickup some tricks like how to properly use a product, how to apply smth the way that will enhance your makeup application (like set my under eye concealer with translucent powder, which I never did before) or what color combinations work best, etc.

I have on a rare occasion. However, due to having been a MUA ( a gazillion years ago, lol ), I am able, just by looking carefully at a look someone has done on themselves with no accompanying tutorial, to replicate that same look, but tweaked to my own facial features. And that’s more fun because it’s more challenging!

I don’t watch tutorials very often, but I will copy looks that I see. Sometimes I see colour combinations that I wouldn’t have thought of and I try them out on myself.

I get a lot of ideas from tutorials but I’ve never exactly followed one. I usually just take everything in, mix ideas together, then come up with my own thing. Due to my skin tone, age, and hooded eyes, I probably couldn’t recreate the exact look anyway.

I’ve done that a few times where I start a video while writing/photo editing a post and completely miss the video. lol

Most of the time I watch a tutorial I feel like rummaging through my stash to check out something. It not always related to the look, but I just want to play with my makeup again and get me thinking about other makeup stuff. 😉

I actually LOVE watching youtube tutorials. Even though I don’t like most of the “guru’s” makeup styles out there, it entertains me. But the only ones I actually try are Lisa Eldridge and Harry Makes it Up, I love them.

I don’t! I watch A LOT of YouTube tutorials… I mean A LOT. But I mostly just gain product knowledge and techniques from them. Sometimes I get inspiration for colour schemes for face looks, but I don’t think I’ve ever followed a tutorial for a full face!

Pearl Avatar

I used to for Pixiwoo and Lisa Eldridge. I realized very quickly I needed to take my own face shape and coloring into consideration. Knowing my undertone and what colors work for me (now), if I see a look that I like I’ll write down the colors used and go experiment. I have bought a few things after watching tutorials and some have worked, some have not.

I typically only watch tutorials that interest me, and I’ve tried out many that I’ve watched. I’ve gotten a lot of inspiration and have been really happy with the looks I’ve tried (though some haven’t looked great on me). I also tend to watch a lot of tutorials from redheaded bloggers, as I feel like they’re going to use products and techniques that will look good on me too.

I draw inspiration from maybe 20% of the tutorials I watch, the other ones are just to have something playing really. There have been only a handful that I went through and followed right along with. I really loved Pixiwoo’s Brody Dalle, dewy goth, and Pam Anderson looks. Oh, I think I also did their Dietrich, Kat Dennings, and Marla Singer ones, come to think.

I mainly watch makeup tutorials for techniques or ideas on how to combine colors, especially if I am in a rut. I also watch tutorials BEFORE purchasing an eyeshadow palette to see whether I think the palette will be workable. I know I definitely copied some eye makeup looks when I first got into makeup, but usually I use the tutorials more to check out color combinations (eyeshadow) or to see how different people apply their makeup (e.g., how people contour, how they define the crease). There are some people who create beautiful looks, but who don’t choose colors that would suit me. So I learn from their blending and color application.

Who are some of your favourite Make-up tutorial go to’s on You tube? I only know of Jaclyn Hill, Make-up Geek Marlena, and I think I’ve seen one by Wayne Goss?

Rachel R. Avatar

Sometimes, but usually not. They’re like watching the food network: I learn about ingredients and techniques for making my own stuff, but don’t usually make their recipe.

Kat Avatar

I tend to use them more as inspiration for color combinations, and I did end up learning a lot of basic makeup techniques from them way back when I started out. Or I’ll take a technique they used and substitute colors I prefer more, or tweak a look to my preferences. So yeah, I mostly use them as inspiration!

Jenn Avatar

I mostly just watch for inspiration. The only time I ever try to copy a look, it’s from Lisa Eldridge b/c she often gives different options for different skin tones/types and talks about how to adjust the look for your eye shape. Honestly, she was a godsend for me when it came to learning how to do makeup on myself because I haven’t been able to find a how-to on someone with an eyes similar to mine (Asian, w/ an even crease, but no noticeable socket line)

Zainab Avatar

Sometimes. Usually there’s a fair bit of adjusting to get things to suit my features (eyeshadow especially) so I suppose more often than not I’m ‘inspired’ rather than instructed.

Candice Avatar

I never try the exact look but I absorb the info little by little to use the tips that were given. After seeing 10s of videos where the person applies the crease shade first, I tried this idea. type of thing.
