Tutorial - Neutral (Signature Look)
I looked through tutorials I’ve done, and I hadn’t done anything neutral, so this is a tutorial for my favorite neutral look. I think it’s a look that anyone can really get to work for them. I was inspired by one of the wedding looks MAC has/had on their website. If you ever have trouble blending, browns are the best colors to start working with, because when you blend distinct colors, you can often muddy them with too many attempts at blending – but browns, they’re already muddy!
Skill Level: Beginner-Moderate
Start with a blank eye, and gather all the colors you will need. I used the following for this look: Copper (metal) pigment, Summer Neutral e/s, Goldmine e/s, Amber Lights e/s, Showstopper e/s, Gold Dusk pigment, Ambering Rose blush, Vibrant O l/s, and Heartfelt Pink l/g.
Apply Copper (metal) pigment using a fairly flat and stiff brush with just a droplet or less of MAC’s water-based mixing medium all over your lid.
This is how it looks when applied with your eyes closed.
Pick up Summer Neutral e/s on a small, fluffy eyeshadow brush and place the brush in the center of your lid and move downwards. Go up and down to cover the entire middle section.
This is the result.
Taking Goldmine e/s on your eyeshadow brush, place it on the inner corner/inner lid.
Bring it up so that you arch it away from your nose, keeping with the general shape of your eye.
This is what you should have so far.
Apply Amber Lights e/s to your outer lid with your eyeshadow brush starting from the edge of
Summer Neutral e/s and moving outwards.
Then adjust your brush so that you can bring the darkened color upwards and over your crease.
Using just a touch of Showstopper e/s, place the brush horizontally in the middle of your crease and gently move outwards and then slowly drag the brush inwards so that it creates a very soft crease color.
Like so. It’s not that apparent here, and it shouldn’t be, it’s just a very slight, only in a certain light, kind of effect.
Picking up dry Gold Dusk pigment on your eyeshadow brush, place the brush directly under the arch in your eyebrow and slowly drag it outwards.
Bring the brush back to the starting position, and drag the brush inwards, so that after you’ve finished the strokes, you have covered your browbone area with the pigment.
Using a little bit of Showstopper e/s, hold your brush horizontally against your lower lash line from the outer corner.
Slowly do a bit of dab and drag as you bring it to the middle of your lower lash line.
Using Summer Neutral e/s, utilize the technique we did with Showstopper, only for the inner lower lash line.
This is what it looks like.
Another shot. Now, add your choice in mascara, face products, lip products, liner, etc. to complete the look. I chose simple black liner, Ambering Rose blush, Vibrant O lipstick, and Heartfelt Pink lipglass.
Looking good! i have a question though…why do you use colors in the beginning that by the end you cant see? j/w. thnx alot!
Sometimes I use colors as bases to help bring other colors out, and sometimes I just forget which one I started with and swipe another shadow.
Thanks for your tutorials. My daughters (ages 17 and 11) and I are big fans of your talent (and your MAC collection!). My older daughter was inspired to follow one of your looks for her winter formal when I showed her your website.
I just have some questions: Do you do your eyes first before applying foundation? How do you prevent pigment from falling on your face? (I usually end up with pigment on my lower eye area and upper cheekbones and it’s hard to clean up!)
Thanks Christine. Have a nice day.
Hi Millie! Aww, a family of fans, almost, lol! π Yes, I do my eyes first, and brush off what fall out occurs afterwards; either with a wet q-tip, makeup remover wipe, or just a tissue. Then I apply liquid foundation, which usually covers whatever I wasn’t able to get off from before.
Thanks π
hi! first of all I do have to say that i absolutely LOVE your tutorials!! I have a question about the fabulous lipcolor that you have on. are there any other lipsticks or lipgloss I can use to create the color you have on? b/c those two colors that you used aren’t on the mac site anymore.
thanks!
Thank you Whitney! Lychee Luxe lipglass will be perfect to achieve the same lip color. You can use it over a coral shaded lipstick like Jest or CB96, as well.
I love love love this look! It’s my favorite I’m going to M.A.C to buy the eyeshadows. This is my favorite tutorial after the black smokey eyes.
Thanks again, Dana! Ohh, how fun, a trip to MAC π
I must say I admire your art and yep it is an artform π
I have a couple of questions, pls forgive as I am a MU newbie π
1. I am not too familiar with pigments and noticed you used Gold Dusk pigment dry on your arch. Does it stay well or does if flake during the day? I always assumed you need a mixing medium with pigments.
2. Do you use the same brush to apply the different shadows and blend?
Thank!
Okay just saw your tut on Tools used so ignore ques 2. Thks
Gold Dusk pigment stays on pretty well as a highlight π I don’t notice any obvious flaking, but I’m sure there is a bit! I usually use the mixing medium for pigments when applying them to my lid. π
Hi,
I really like this kind of makeup so thank U for teaching us your knowledge.
Thank you – it is my pleasure!
Love your tutorials! So well-done! You are so pretty, too. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
2 things:
1 – I wish I could see your whole face at the end of an eye tutorial so I could get an idea of how someone would look with eyes like that.
2 – I have a beautiful eye palette from Lorac that I just love, but it’s cream shadow – the just-add-water kind and all I’ve been able to do with it so far is make a mess. Could you do a tutorial on this kind of eye shadow? (My palette is similar to this SmashBox one http://images.teamsugar.com/files/usr/0/3362/P147907_hero.jpg )
Thanks!
Hi Monica! Thank you!
I’ll think about showing my whole face, but I have some personal reasons as to why I haven’t on this site.
I’ll see if I can check out what you’re talking about, because I don’t use cream shadows myself – I find they’re just tough to work with… and I’ve never heard of the just-add-water kind, LOL! So I will have to do some research.
Ah – I didn’t even think about the issues that might arise out of showing your whole face. Silly me! Sorry, Christine!!
Thanks for looking into those cream eye shadows. I coudln’t resist such a pretty palette, but I’m beginning to think I made a mistake purchasing it. π If you don’t get around to a tutorial, it’s no biggie.
Anyways… thanks for all you’ve done so far. π Best of luck to you in all you do!
It’s not a prob π lol!
I know from some past experience that when I go to use cream eyeshadows, I tend to use them as bases moreso than actual shadows, because once they dry, they’re tough to budge so maybe try them that way, first π
i really like this look, the colors && the blending and everything are beautiful, but personally, i would have gone with a thicker more voluminizing mascara. maybe it’s just me, but i think it would have made the whole thing look fabulous, but still natural. thats just what i think. gorgeous job on everything else though!
Thanks Stephanie! Hmm, this is using a voluminizing mascara…
I cannot thank you enough for all these tutorials you have put on your site! I am new to the makeup world and need visuals like this on eyeshadow applications. This looks is PERFECT for my work day and I cannot wait to try and recreate it! You are doing a wonderful service!
No problem, Kirstie! I am happy to hear that you enjoy them π I hope it works out for you!
Just to say thank you for torturing your eyes for us! This is extremely hard work and so many people benefit from this. God Bless you!
It’s not torture, I promise! I have fun with it π
I absolutely love this look! I can think of so many occasions where I can use this π Thanks for showing me lots of ways to use Amber Lights, which I bought months ago but had no clue how to use it (just bought it coz it looks so pretty). Just one question, do you ever use e/s as base instead of pigments? Coz I have Mac e/s in Bronze and it looks a lot like the copper pigment you used. Just wondering if I can use it instead. Thanks!!
Hey Janis! Amber Lights was one of my first MAC shadows, and I love it π You could definitely use Bronze in place of Copper pigment!
HELP!!!! I can’t find showstopper and summer neutral eyeshadows!! What colors are similar?
Try Brun for Showstopper and Patina for Summer Neutral!
THANK YOU SO MUCH! I love this tutorial, the color is beautiful!
Thanks, Maribel!
You are so talented. Thank you for taking the time to share your talent with all of us!
My pleasure, Lynbird!
Hi Christine, i just have to say i absolutely love your work! You have such a beautiful talent and i’m so glad you’re putting it to use by helping all the (NOT SO TALENTED) others out there π Thank you so much – you are my hero! π
Aw, thank you, Nese! I’m happy to help anyone I can π
i would like to see a full face photo at the end. but nice look! π
