Hourglass Modernist Eyeshadow Palettes ($58.00 for 0.175 oz.) popped up on Sephora last night for VIB Rouges. I bought four of them, but I did receive these two on Saturday from Hourglass, so I thought you might enjoy a preview while I test them out! 🙂

Hmmmmm not feeling these as much as I thought. I think I’ll hold out for the NARS Dual Intensity palette instead. I have a feeling these wouldn’t get a lot of use. Of course maybe one of the other colors will call to me more.

MakeupTray Avatar

Agree! Love how the colors are layed out but it is the same ole ,same ole. Some of these
look weak. This collection has to be a Temptalia recommends for me to buy it. Looking fwd to NARS palette

Cicely Avatar

Aw, too bad about that gold colour! It looked so gorgeous in the photos, but the swatch is kind of a let-down. Most of them look really good, but at that price point, they all better be fantastic. I suppose I should wait for the reviews, though!
Tbh though, I’m pretty burnt out about all the “neutral palettes” going around. I know people love them and that they’re a great staple to have around, but I’d like to see some fascinating and striking colour schemes once in a while. Really wish that the Urban Decay Electric Palette had set off an “electric craze” just like the Naked palettes did. 🙁

Nicole Avatar

On the edge of my seat for these reviews! Had to stop my fingers when I saw them last night. I love the one with the olive and plums. I had to remind myself to wait for your reviews and my goals of getting that MUFE artist shadow palette together. Hopefully these are dupable ( am I spelling that right, lol??) with those.
On am aside Christine, I am going to order the Guerlain les violettes pressed powder later this week along with a pressed meteorites. I know you wear medium. I where the UD naked powder in “naked light” at the moment and somtimes mufe or nars. I am about NC 20-25 in mac, I wear YSL touche Eclat foundation mostly, B30 mix with B40 right now. The online Beauty advisor suggested medium for me. I am just weary it may be dark. Just wondering what your mac coloring is for reference?Thank you!:)

Nicole Avatar

I’m confused. The only mac foundation I own is face and body..so that’s where I got the NC 20..it’s a little light.I have a c5 which I mix as I need when I do wear it. So,I’m not sure on Mac colors. Wouldn’t NC 30 be darker than NC 27 or close? I’m just trying to figure out these powder shades. The comment regarding the pink undertone in light has me concerned.I’m yellow undertoned as a squash!
So,in your early opinion do you think I could dupe these HG shadows in shade and texture with MUFE artist? Ive been using the ones I do own. They are the easiest I own.

Christine Avatar

Correct! NC30 is darker than NC27. Now that you mention C5 and being very yellow-toned, Medium would be the best fit between Light and Medium. (That is Guerlain’s downfall – lack of shades!)

The texture of these is more like traditional powder, so they don’t feel much like the Artist shadows! My guess if you love the MUFE Artist, you can easily skip these!

Nicole Avatar

Great! I’ll order medium. If it turns out a bit dark,I’ll stash it for summer and try out the light or make myself visit a counter.I may get to the counter if there is one in my Nordstrom this week. I hate the counters though..so pushy.lol.
My wallet is singing your praises! Thank you so much for your help!

fuji Avatar

OMG Yes that’s exactly what I was expecting to see on your blog when the page was getting loaded. Can’t wait to see how you would wear it!!

I just ordered Color Field, the green/olive one yesterday. Such a hard decision between Graphite and that. I hope they all have great quality lasting power. I’m planning on using it for my new work-look.

Aditi Avatar

These are so beautiful, I need them all! I do wish they’d put the shades in pans because I’m terrified I’ll end up muddying the colors in the palette, but I can’t deny the pattern is gorgeous!

Sarah Avatar

Last night I had such a struggle with ordering or waiting until you posted something/anything (just wait she will have it soon!) but this morning I had to pull the trigger. I would have been so bummed if I had let Exposure (the plums) slip away until it gets restocked if gets sold out quickly.

Aquinna Avatar

Wow! The infinity palette looks great although the color selection doesn’t seem to cost $58 because you could easily find dupes for these. Btw, why are other colors swatched twice?

Kahlan Avatar

I can not wait for these to hopefully arrive in Australia or maybe I will just have to break my self inflicted online makeup shopping ban and get them off of net-a-porter because I don’t think I can wait that long aha they look so beautiful!!

Caesara Avatar

Oooh, so excited to see your thoughts on these palettes, especially Atmosphere and Monochrome (Rose)! Saw them appear last night on Sephora but forced myself to wait “until Temptalia gets her reviews up”. You do such an awesome job giving us the scoop on what is worth a splurge and what isn’t – thank you!!

Jessica T Avatar

The design of these is gorgeous, but not sure how practical they are. Although there are a couple gorgeous shades the swatches overall are a little disappointing. I’ve heard these are really powdery too. Looking forward to your review!

Nicole Avatar

I noticed the powdery comments in the reviews on Sephora. People are saying they are smooth, but a little powdery with fall out,but giving it 5 stars! At this price, imo,it shoud be butter,no fall out.we shall see the verdict in Christine’s reviews!

Nichole Avatar

I’ll pass. Having all the shades blended together will drive me completely bonkers over time. It looks cute, but not practical. I will dearly miss their older DC shadows and cute packaging.

Monica Avatar

I love abstract art and modernist touches but the texture of these palettes really puts me off! I don’t think I’d reach for these eyeshadows just because they make me feel gross somehow 🙁 It’s a bummer because the pigmentation looks awesome.

Great pictures!

Chelsea Avatar

Thank you for posting these so quickly! I’m a VIB Rouge and I’ve been agonizing over which one to get before they go on sale to the general public (and most likely sell out). These swatches are a HUGE help.

LipstickHoarder Avatar

Pretty palette but reviews I’ve heard on it, it’s totally skippable. Can’t wait to hear your thoughts on it though, Temptalia.

Lori P Avatar

Ooooh! I ordered Monochrome and Color Field yesterday but I will definitely be getting these two also. It’s been a while since I was intrigued by an eyeshadow palette design.

Christine Avatar

That is really awful, Lauren! At this price point, there shouldn’t be scratches like that. These two are press samples, so while I’ll note it in the review, sometimes press samples are early runs or whatnot, so it might not have been indicative of what consumers would have seen. Bummer to hear that it might be. Guess I’ll find out when the four I bought from Sephora arrive!

Andrew Avatar

Hmmm, I don’t know; hopefully the review will redeem it, but so far I’m not digging it. #1 and #2 look pretty disappointing and the shades as a whole seem pretty dupe-able. For the price I was hoping for something a little more spectacular.

But then again, this is only the first palette and the reviews are still pending so maybe I’ll be pleasantly surprised after all! I won’t get my hopes up, though.

Katherine T. Avatar

A couple weeks ago, I predicted we were going to be drowning in a “sea” of neutral palettes for 2015, and this is before I saw the wavy pattern of these shadows (psychic???) 5 of the 7 kits look like mostly neutral browns. Hope you will also swatch the green and plum kits. As for these, some of the swatches look patchy and powdery while others look really nice. Thanks for the sneak peek, I’m eagerly awaiting your reviews!!

Alison Avatar

Totally agree. So tired of all these warm neutral palettes. I find graphite more interesting for that reason but not sure whether the three cool shades make it worth the price.

Staci Avatar

I think if I were to buy one of these I wouldn’t use it. I would just want to leave it open on my vanity so it could be pretty. Hourglass did a great job with these as far as looks go. They are so unique, in a very good way.

Fran Avatar

I’m liking Graphite, Color Field (olive), Atmosphere (cool neutrals, and Obscura (earth tones), but I’m sure I don’t need them all! I wonder if they’ll ever come to my local Sephora so I can compare them in person, or if they’ll be an online only item.

Jaz Avatar

I think I may treat myself to the plum one for my birthday next month. ( Along with a few other goodies) I want to read more about them first though

Rachel R. Avatar

Honestly, I’m not super-impressed by the swatches. I still think the concept/packaging is gorgeous. Right now, these two are looking like collector’s items to me.

Mariella Avatar

Oh dear…..I am SO in trouble with these. I saw Wayne Goss absolutely raving about them the other day and now these fabulous close-ups and swatches, Christine. I cannot wait to read your reviews. While I find the colours in Graphite a bit “odd” (that warm bronzey orange with the cooler grey and silvery taupe, I still think it’s gorgeous and I love the look of Infinity as well. And the green one has already grabbed my attention big time.

Sylirael Avatar

Aww, the gunmetal shade in Graphite isn’t as bluish as I was hoping! Still, the palette has a nice colour theme running through it, and does look pretty in the pan. It’s a damn shame about the scratches on the case, though, and some of the shades dont’ look *overly* awesome in terms of pigmentation. Holding out for the full review, though! 😀

Still wana see the purple and green ones!! *hops from foot to foot impatiently* 😀

Snowy Avatar

Hi, Christine! This is my first time commenting, and I want to start off by saying that I LOVE your site! It is so, so helpful! Thank you so much. =] I can’t wait for the full review.

Secondly, I have a question that I am hoping you (or anyone here) could answer. These palettes look beautiful, and I am torn among Monochrome, Infinity, and maybe Atmosphere. My skin has a yellow surface tone (I am Asian) with a cool undertone so I am a bit confused as to which palette would look good and bad on me. Would the rose-gold tones of Monochrome look okay on me? Also, would Infinity look bad on me since it is “warm neutrals?” Should I go for Atmosphere instead?

Christine Avatar

I haven’t seen either in person, so it’s hard to say – promo photos can be totally right or totally off! Do you wear pink or yellow foundation for your skin color, Snowy? If it’s yellow, you should be fine with “warm neutral” kind of colors. If it’s pink, then it’s possible some might warmer than ideal.

Tangie Wimberly Avatar

Not sure yet. I’m only allowing myself two pallets this year period. So I need to pick carefully. I’ll have to see these in person.

Jocelyn Avatar

I definitely prefer the Graphite palette. #5 is really calling my name. I get what everyone is saying about ANOTHER neutral palette, but I think this has some interesting colors to it, and I’m always a sucker for packaging and the Hourglass packaging always makes me gravitate toward their products.
