Do you sanitize your beauty products?

Do you sanitize your beauty products? Do you have a schedule? Never?

.

I sanitize lipsticks every 6 months or so, powder products every 6-9 months (generally when I do a major re-organization). I’m pretty clean about skincare and the like. I use recycleable disposable lipgloss wands for gloss so no double-dipping.

I sanitize lipsticks by dipping them in rubbing alcohol, gently blotting, then letting it dry (about five minutes). I sanitize powders by spraying them with rubbing alcohol, waiting 30 seconds or so, then wiping down with a paper towel. I get my recycleable, disposable lipgloss wands here; they also have lip brushes here.

may i ask, how do you keep your mascara from drying out while you are cleaning the wand(wand is attached to the cover)? i might sound like an idiot but it’s worth asking..

Bettina Avatar

You take great care in keeping your products so neat and clean. I on the other hand feel that since I’m pretty much the main person who uses them that there is no need to sanitize them. I do clean my brushes well before and after I do make up on other people though.

Ceriene Avatar

Hope I don’t sound too clueless, but… how do you sanitize your make up? I clean my brushes regularly, but I’ve never thought to actually clean my make up.

I’m curious as to why and how you do it, Christine. 🙂

Rachel Avatar

I would love to know that as well! I tried to find out the manufacturer of the brush applicators at the MAC counter, but there wasn’t a name on the box they came in. It’s hard when you’re grossed out by your own lip glosses when you’re the only one that uses them! Lol.

Jackie Avatar

how do you sanitize them? i’m pretty new with make up and i’m still building my make up collection… i’ve seen someone on youtube spray special make up cleaner stuff on their eyeshadows… where can i get that? or is there a better way?

Krista Avatar

Since I am the main person using my makeup, I don’t usually sanitize them, but if I am doing a friend’s or other people’s makeup I will sanitize before using anything on them and then sanitize after I used the product on them. I clean my brushes regularly, but I am iffy when cleaning my foundation brush, I clean it right after I use it, because it just seems really gross having it sit there while bacteria grow on it, and I can’t use it if it’s not clean.

As long as you’re the only person who uses your makeup, there is no need to sanitize it. Besides, it ruins the makeup. At least that’s what we’re taught in makeup class 🙂

Anitacska Avatar

Never. Is that bad, lol? I clean my brushes regularly, but that’s about it. I don’t even use disposable lipgloss applicators and usually apply lipstick from the stick/tub (whatever it’s called).

Charlene Avatar

SInce I am the only one using them I dont except my brushes. I clean them after use usually. Though when mixing any cosmetics I do use ALOT of alcohol on mixing utensils.

Angela Avatar

No I don’t sanitize my makeup. I’m the only one using it, and I would be afraid the product would be ruined. That’s just me. Plus I don’t keep items that I don’t use or like.

I last did mine sometime in early October. I did what I see them do at the MAC counter, dipped my lipsticks in alcohol then wiped. I sprayed my eyeshadows and blushes with alcohol and wiped. Took all the eyeshadows out of my palette and wiped that down with alcohol too. That was a lot of work and I probably won’t do it again for a while. Now if only I could be so diligently clean with my brushes….

No, I am the only one that uses my m/u. When I am sick I don’t use m/u and that would be my only concern for germ contamination. I have been collecting m/u for almost 20 years and haven’t had a problem. I have good skin and haven’t had any adverse reactions from m/u contamination.

I do clean my brushes often, and spray them with alcohol between use because they are not in closed containers.

Ooooh this is interesting!

where do you get the rubbing alcohol from? and how do you go about cleaning powder products etc? I would love like a tutorial post on this, I so could do with prolonging the life of some of my products!! Makes sense to clean them, we invest our money in them after all!

Virginia Avatar

I actually don’t sanitize my make-up. I clean my brushes after I put make-up on in the morning, but that’s about it. I don’t worry about bacteria ruining my powder products, but I do have concerns about cream products like lipstick and cream blush, so I wipe off the top layer from time to time. And I throw out any gloss that starts smelling funny.

DonnaN Avatar

wow, since I’m the only one using them, I never thought to do that. I do keep my brushes clean..especially if I’m switching between colors. I do love the idea of those disposable lipgloss wands….I may have to get me some of them….

I just recently watched a few videos on YouTube re makueup sanitizing, even if you are the only one who uses your m/u. When you get thinking about bacteria growing on/in your products it is gross!

So I placed an order of these cool new sanitizing products on http://www.beautysoclean.com/ – they do not dry out your m/u because it is not straight alcohol (which I used to use) and can be used on cream and powder and do not wreck them.
Just thought i’d let you ladies know 🙂

I actually do my makeup brushes with MAC brush cleaner and baby shampoo. I clean face brushes daily and all others weekly.

Question is how do you sanitize your makeup??? Such as lipsticks, powders and gloss?

Bunny Avatar

I clean my brushes but it never occurred to me to clean my products, now that you mention it and have put down how to do it I’ll have to try it.

Anita Avatar

I clean my brushes in alcohol after every single use – they also get a deep clean with shampoo once a week (except for foundation/concealer brushes – those babies get washed after every use!). I’m the only one who uses my lipglosses so I don’t use disposable wands or anything, but I do a regular cull of my makeup drawer to throw away anything old or suspicious looking.

Luisafer Avatar

I don’t sanitize my make up, the truth as every chemical product makeup expires so I throw mine every year or year and half. Regularly clean my brushes and since my dad is a dentist had use his stuff.

Dusty Avatar

As someone who mostly does make-up on other people, I’m pretty careful about keeping my products clean. I de-tube all of my lipsticks/creamy products into stackable containers and go in with a spatula to remove the product I want – That way I can “double-dip” without worrying. I clean my brushes after each use, cut the ends of my mascara wands so that I HAVE to use a disposable wand and eyeshadows and other powders I spray with isopropyl alchohol everytime I use them.

I’ve heard of the spray by Beauty So Clean, but haven’t used it, anyone here used it? I’d love to hear others’ thoughts on the product.

The only part of my routine that I really don’t like is the mascara. I HATE using disposable products (wands, etc.) because it’s just not environmentally responsible. With lipglosses I use the wand to place a small amount of product on a clean surface and then a brush to apply, but mascara is a little more tricky.

I have used MAC’s mascara mixing medium with pigment before, and it works fine (I can use their mascara brush when I do that), it just takes time to prepare… I suppose I should just stop bitching and take that time! 🙂 LOL!

What I use actually is this spray and it’s called Beauty So Clean and they make special sprays for lipsticks and separate sprays for creams and powders and I actually they way it works. I clean out everything in my traincase this way twice a week to stay germ free. Has anyone used this? It’s pretty cool!

Sixx Avatar

You could probably skip the lipgloss wands altogether and just use a lip brush. I usually use a lip brush to grab gloss from the sides of the original gloss wand & it works just fine.

Michele Avatar

I clean the containers but not the product – if it’s smelling or starting to look funky, it’s time to toss it! Since I’m the only one using them, it doesn’t seem like a big deal. I also clean my brushes often. (you’ve got me started on collecting MAC brushes :-o)

Doesn’t spraying with alcohol change the product slightly? I would think with lipstick especially, it would have a drying effect or react chemically.

Christine Avatar

Hey Michelle,

I haven’t had any problems myself, and I’ve been doing it for about two years now. I wouldn’t be terribly surprised if there was some change, but I haven’t noticed anything. I just sanitize how I’ve seen the ladies & gents at MAC do it, to be honest, lol! I might have to look into BeautySoClean!

AnGeLwInGz Avatar

I use alcohol on lipsticks. I use chapstick for moisture, and alcohol dries it out, so I melt it a little with a lighter. Still haven’t figured out a way to sanitize glosses. Who cares, throwing them away when they get older gives me an excuse to buy more!

Catherine Avatar

Since I have a fairly small/medium sized stash and I don’t really use many glosses (I only have 3 open right now) and only one mascara at a time, I don’t regularly sanitize my makeup. The large majority of everything I use is powder, so I’m not terribly worried about them. I only sanitize my makeup before and after someone else uses them – for example, if I do a friend’s makeup for a night out or something, I’ll make sure my brushes are washed and everything I use on them is either wiped off or sprayed lightly with 90% isopropanol before and after I use whatever it is on them. I also sanitize swap items before I use them.

Monica Avatar

Again, I dont because Im the only one using them. I throw old stuff away and clean my brushed regularly, but thats about it. IMO, we are accumulating way too much garbage as it is. Is it really necessary to use disposable lipgloss wands on yourself? Sure, it prolongs the life, but honestly, the Earth doesnt have an unlimited supply of resources for everyone to do as they please. I know this may offend some, but it is honestly a HUGE issue right now, so we should make every effort to reduce the amount of waste we produce.
