Guerlain L'Oiseau de Feu (901) & Coque d'Or (400) Nail Lacquer Reviews, Photos, Swatches
Guerlain L’Oiseau de Feu (901) Vernis Nail Lacquer
Guerlain L’Oiseau de Feu (901) Vernis Nail Lacquer ($25.00 for 0.34 fl. oz.) is a clear top coat with gold leaf suspended in it. It’s a top coat that you have to dab and pat on, fish a little bit, and manipulate to get enough flakes on the nail without them overlapping. I showed one coat applied with minimal fussing on my pinky nail, so you can see how poor that went. Dior Golden Shock (001) (LE, $28.00) is very similar–at most, slightly smaller pieces. Cult Nails Feedback (P, $12.00) is more than just gold. Cult Nails Walk of Shame (DC, $12.00) has holographic shimmer in it, too. See comparison swatches / view dupes.
Guerlain Coque d’Or (400) Vernis Nail Lacquer ($25.00 for 0.34 fl. oz.) is a softened, light-medium gold with a metallic shimmer running through it. It was semi-opaque with visible nail coming through. The consistency was slightly thick, but it didn’t pool along the edges. It did dry down to a very nice, glossy finish.
Dior Gold Equinoxe (241) (LE, $27.00) is darker, warmer. NARS Milos (P, $20.00) is slightly cooler. MAC Magnificent Feast (LE, $16.00) is darker. Guerlain Altoum (LE, $23.00) is lighter. Dior Or Divin (LE, $24.00) is yellower. Dior Diorling (LE, $27.00) is sheerer. China Glaze Swanky Silk (LE, $7.50) is a touch darker. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

I don’t like the top coat at all… too flaky, it just looks too messy and random to me. Coque d’Or is pretty though.
Gold flake top coats seem very popular this holiday!
I find that type of glittery top coat a real waste of money. They are usually hard to work with, expensive and if I may say leave quite an ugly finish. For someone who likes that type of finish an easier, cheaper alternative is too simply buy a regular clear top coat and put some glitter on it.
Coque d’Or on the other hand is beautiful and a good shade for new year’s festivities me thinks.
Thanks for the tip, Gabis!
Oooh I’m really loving Coque D’Or! It looks so refined!
Glad ya liked it!
FYI In your opening description, you’ve labeled both as L’Oiseau de Feu. The second one should be Coque D’Or.
Thanks, fixed!
how cute this nail paint is 🙂 i would love to buy this.
Which shade did you like?
The firebird lacquer looks so decadent in the bottle, but I’m…a little bit too lazy to do all the fishing, if I’m honest 😉 I sort of feel like it would be cooler (and potentially less expensive?) do get some sheets of gold leaf and apply it over still-tacky nail polish!
That would be cooler! I wonder what the cost on that would be (still probably cheaper, though).
You were really kind with your rating on the gold leaf glitter polish .. although maybe the point of the top coat is minimal glitter?
The nail polish is quite pretty .. I do love gold on nails.
Monica.
It’s a top coat, so it’s definitely not supposed to be opaque!
Coque d’Or is sooo lovely. I’m torn between getting this or Dior’s Gold Equinoxe. I might just have to rely on the ol’ coin flip! lol!
LOL! Do you like a lighter, paler gold or a warmer one?
Definitely warmer gold, though it’s been awhile since I sported anything of the pale gold variety.
Go Dior then!
Thanks for the advice! Just placed an order on Nordstrom. My wallet weeps once again… 🙂
I’m a nut for gold, and Coque d’Or looks really pretty. I didn’t expect to like the top coat, but I do kind of like the two golds together. I personally don’t tend to splurge on nail polish, though.
It sounds like there may be some dupes from Maybelline!
Deborah Lippmann’s Boom Boom Pow is hands down the best gold leaf polish. I really don’t know why other brands even try to create them. They’re never going to top it. You never have to fish, the pieces aren’t too big or too small. And there’s a bit of gold dust mixed in so it helps to fill in any naked space that might occur. You don’t even need to save it for use as a top coat, cause it looks fantastic on it’s own too.
I’ll have to check it out!
Funny to see that Dior, Guerlain and Lancome are all releasing a gold-flake top coat. Isn’t it sad that holiday collections all look alike?
When stuff like this happens, it’s disenchanting for sure.
Coque d’Or is pretty, but not terribly unique. Loiseau de Feu is so diappointing. Someone has to invent a better delivery method for chunky glitter polishes.
Agreed! One day…
Love the gold theme 🙂 Very similar to colours in the drugstores though!
That’s good news!
oof, that top coat. there’s an opi polish just like that except it’s more like big holo silver glitter and while it’s gorgeous it’s just a nightmare to apply.
That’s what I don’t like about the bigger glittery products!
Pretty but I’ll be skippin’ em.
Your wallet is safe!
I got Maybelline’s Gilded polish from their recent Colorshow Jewels collection and love it! It has the same opaque glitter shards (a bit more organic in shape) but with a lot more glitter payoff in one coat. It’s gorgeous!
correction – it’s called Gilded in Gold*
Awesome, thanks Annie!
It’s almost cute how the one, not-really-fussed-with coat on your pinky has that one lone sparkle, ,right by the tip. Cute as in “aww, look at you, you poor lonely little thing”
Haha!
Bold golf by maybelline color show is totally a dupe for coque d’or
I really like golden glitter nail polish but essence has one calles gold digger (not sure if thats the bright ñame) that looks much denser than that top coat
Sorry for the misspelling i meant bold gold
Thank you, Pame!
Agree with the comments that it is disappointing to see so many sub-par gold top coats for the holidays, why would be want to invest in something that comes off as an afterthought?
It’s so odd!
I’m not a fan of the top coats with flakes in them. I don’t have the patience to move the flakes around, nor do I think I get the result I would like to get. More shine I think.
I quite like the gold, i’ve not worn a gold polish for years. I don’t think I’ll get such an expensive one, though.
Every time you do a nailpolish post, Christine I get so envious, you have fantastic nails.
Aww, you are too kind 🙂
Your natural nails are so lovely! What’s your secret? 🙂
I wish I could tell you I had a secret, but I’m really bad at taking care of my hands – I am lucky if I remember hand cream once a week!
