Make Up For Ever I922 Electric Purple Artist Shadow (Blush)

Make Up For Ever I922 Electric Purple Artist Shadow (Blush) ($21.00 for 0.08 oz.) is a vibrant, violet purple with cool, pink undertones and a satiny sheen. Ardency Inn Royal (P, $21.00) is more shimmery, cooler-toned. Urban Decay Urban (P) is slightly more shimmery, a touch darker. Tarina Tarantino Violet Storm #5 (LE) is more muted. Fyrinnae Parental Advisory (DC, $8.25) is cooler-toned. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Of all the shades in Make Up For Ever’s massive (original) eyeshadow range, #92 was iconic. It was that bold, bright, deep purple with a matte finish that so many people had to have (myself included), so it was a real surprise to see how much they changed it in the new formula. I had asked specifically what shade replaced #92 in the new range, and the answer was consistently I922. The finish is obviously different, as the new one has a satiny, pearly sheen and the original had a matte finish. The original was also darker overall, so they’re not too similar in color or finish. I don’t remember if #92 was actually eye safe or not, but I922 is listed as a “Blush” rather than an eyeshadow, even though it is lumped with all of the eyeshadows.

It was intensely pigmented with a soft, lightly creamy (but it is more powder than cream) consistency that blends fairly easily on the skin. Applied with a lighter hand, it takes on a pinky-lavender coloring rather than the richer violet you see in the heavy swatch. As a blush, the color lasted for eight and a half hours before fading slightly.

It’s definitely not the same. No. 92 set the standard for similar shades on the market today ( especially independent brands)

This one is more red toned on my skin. I do wish it was a matte. Such a big difference.

I still can’t believe that they discontinued #92… It’s one of my favorite eye shadows and really a cult product. How could they get rid of it and replace it by such an boring, dupable shade?! #92 was so unique… I’m so glad I have one and I’m quite sure I will never run out of it! 😉

The way brands seem to be saying, ‘EYESHADOW, EYESHADOW, EYESHADOW!’ followed by “JK, this is a blush!” seems to be a new trend. I get that it is a U.S. restriction and that in most other countries, it has no such warning or disclaimer, BUT I just like transparency.

Thank you for the review!! Before I buy anything I always check here first:) would you use it as an eyeshadow?? I just purchased several of these off their site and didnt realize several of the colors were listed as a ‘blush’, even though I wanted them for eyeshadows… cant wait for more reviews from you!

Christine Avatar

I, personally, would probably use it as an eyeshadow since I have inadvertently used other products with similar warnings with no ill-effects, but I’m not a doctor or scientist, so you have to make your own decision on that. It is considered eye safe in other countries, just not in the U.S.

The “original” No. 92 is also labeled as “Blush”, and everyone uses that as an eyeshadow. However, while No. 92 never stained (eyelids or hand swatches), this one did-2 days later, I still had a stain where I swatched it on my hand…

This is only, uh… EXACTLY what I’ve been looking for! A true violet blush… and it doubles as a nice purple eyeshadow! (or the other way around, perhaps!). Why is MUFE not a thing in this country?! Ah well, onto the Sephora wishlist it goes, I guess! 😀 Along with Royal, of course! Can’t have to many intense violet eyeshadows now! <3

Well I could never pull it off as a blush, but I’m sure someone with a little more confidence when using more unique colors could make it look awesome! It does look pretty cool on you, Christine 🙂

So I haven’t been keeping up with the latest makeup launches lately and I noticed these at sephora last weekend an they seem close to the older shades but seem to have a different formula. Christine, did they do away with the old shades/formula from before and have a new formula out now or what happened??? Fill me a little

This is quite beautiful. I think I might get this. I’ve constantly been looking for pale gold, rose gold and a matte caramel shade, so I may create a trio and get this as a blush. It’s just so much more expensive this way though.

Oh wow, that is a huge change in color. O_0. It’s a color that I couldn’t wear on my hair skin, but it is gorgeous. Shame that they changed it so much – it’s hard to find those intense matte shades.

Veronica Avatar

Change in the pigment’s cost, maybe? Didn’t work with the new formula. Could be a lot of things, but it’s not one of the better ones I’ve seen.

I’m still waiting on mine to arrive, but this is one of the shades I’m most excited about. I adore purple blushes, even though it’s just a technicality based on US law. The classification encourages that use and I’m so excited. Plus, I can’t wait to see how it mixes with AI Royal on the eyes (and Tom Ford Lavender Lust).

Blargh, I’m so sad it’s such a huge change! I am in love with purple, and #92 was the first single eye-shadow I spent $27 bucks on (I’m Canadian, I think I got it off eBay). I will treasure what I have remaining.

Not that the new version isn’t pretty. But I own Ardency Inn Royal and this looks similar enough I’m not going to get the i922.

Interesting blush. You get a highlight without highlighting to boot! I wonder if it could work applied with a stippling brush? I’m so pale, the only way to not go overboard is with a stippling brush. I’ll have to get real Techniques Expert Face Brush, since it’s a decent dupe to MAC’s 159 (Expert is just denser and a little bigger than 159; the bvrutles may be longer too) if I get this, just to experiment with application.

Danielle Avatar

I’ll try with a stippling brush first for sure! Even if it fails as blush, I still have a glowy purple eyeshadow to go with Sugarpill Poison Plum 😛 I wanted the original 92, since it’s cooler than PP but this is also pleasantly pretty so it’s not a big deal (especially since I never got 92 in the first place!).

Nothing wrong with a purple blush. It’s very pretty and interesting. I do wonder if this will say blush in Europe as well. Not planning a new trip to Sephora just now, later this month or beginning of October, as they should have the new NARS lipsticks by then, and maybe even Jardin Perdue and Dolomites.
Sometines it really sux that the launch dates differ so much.
We do have at least some of MUFE eyeshadows, though.
A bit OT, I wanted to use a 20% cupon on the new Armani eyeshadow, the huge one from Fade to Grey. At that particular counter they had it so I could swatch it, they had it on display, but they still didn’t have it to sell. I was really annoyed, I must admit. OT eneded 🙂

Christine Avatar

As far as I know, it’s only in the U.S. that there are restrictions for the colors, but it would be interesting if they market it as a blush elsewhere, just to market as a blush.

Does your coupon expire? Hoping you can use it when they have it in stock!
