Tom Ford Orchid Haze Eyeshadow Quad Review, Photos, Swatches
Tom Ford Orchid Haze Eyeshadow Quad
Tom Ford Orchid Haze Eyeshadow Quad ($78.00 for 0.35 oz.) is a warm-toned palette that features a champagne, brown, rosy plum, and deep plum. Yesterday, I mentioned that I have a hit or miss relationship with Tom Ford’s quads, and this is one of the better ones I’ve tried (I also thought it would show that not all of the brand’s quads are like Ice Queen). It was only the darkest shade that I had any significant issues with–though I think for most, near-perfection is a prerequisite to consider something at this price point. I can see this being a real workhorse of a palette for some with the color combination being a good mix of light and dark, matte and shimmer, so I disappointed that the last shade was such a miss.
Orchid Haze #1 is a warm-toned, golden peach with a frosted, almost metallic, finish. It had excellent color payoff, and the texture was incredibly soft, smooth, and finely-milled. It wore well for eight hours before starting to fade. Too Faced Marzipan (P, $16.00) is less frosted, darker. bareMinerals Ball Gown (LE) is more golden. Tom Ford Beauty In the Pink #2 (LE) is less frosted but very similar. theBalm Stubborn (P, $16.00) is less shimmery. theBalm Third Eye Blinded (P, $16.00) is less shimmery. Estee Lauder Pink Zinc (P, $24.00) is a cream product. bareMinerals Custom Made (LE) is lighter. See comparison swatches.
Orchid Haze #2 is a warm-toned, medium brown with warm, orange undertones and a frosted, metallic finish. The texture was soft and finely-milled but slightly powdery. It’s a shade I thought was easier to apply with a dampened brush, as it gave it a smoother application and minimized excess fall out. It did wear well for eight hours before it showed signs of fading. Sleek MakeUP Python (P, $9.99) is darker. MAC Pink Sensibilities #1 (LE, $21.00) is similar. Urban Decay Liar (P, $18.00) is less warm-toned. Clarins The Essentials #9 (LE) is darker. Le Metier de Beaute Champagne Shimmer (P, $28.00) is a cream product. CoverGirl Melted Caramel (330) (P, $4.99) is darker, less frosted. Clinique Ample Amber (P, $17.00) is a cream product. See comparison swatches.
Orchid Haze #3 is a softened rosy plum with a pearly finish. It had good pigmentation, and the texture was soft and velvety. There was a very slight powderiness to it. When I wore it, the color lasted for almost eight hours before looking faded along the edges. Chanel Quadrille #1 (LE) is darker, less shimmery. Urban Decay Buzz (P, $18.00) is lighter, warmer. theBalm Just This Once Jamie (P, $16.00) is darker, cooler-toned. Make Up For Ever #141 (P, $20.00) is darker. See comparison swatches.
Orchid Haze #4 is a muted, blackened burgundy with neutral-to-cool undertones and a matte finish. It had seemingly good color payoff, but the texture is very powdery, so it sheers away as soon as you blend or touch the product–it doesn’t really seem to bind or adhere well to the skin. On the lid, it looked dry and slightly uneven/patchy and was difficult to blend. The color wore well for seven and a half hours. Tarte Plums Up (LE) is lighter, warmer. Tarina Tarantino Deep Dahlia (LE) is brighter, shimmery. Kat Von D Fur Elise (P) is lighter. theBalm Sexy (P, $16.00) is darker. theBalm Moderato (P, $16.00) is similar. MAC Blackberry (P, $15.00) is lighter. See comparison swatches.

I can’t believe how much his makeup is. lol. Thank God, you review these. $78.00 for a B+ rating is not a good deal, imo. lol. These colors are so dupeable with UD N3 palette.
Like if you’d wear this often and love it every time you wore it, I think it’s worth it. With my skin tone, it seems really flattering in terms of colors, so it’s one I’d lean towards myself. In general, it’s not a product I’d get excited about OR heartily recommend based on the rating (in general, B+ isn’t exactly recommendation territory unless there’s something revolutionary, e.g. super unique color or finish or maybe it touts 24 hour wear and it’s 12 hour wear instead).
These seem to apply much warmer then the look in the pan. I really liked this quad and have thought about getting it. If I’m going to get something like this, I might as well get Naked 3.
I am warmer toned, so unfortunately, my skin tone is always going to skew things a little warmer!
The second shade is oh, so pretty. 🙂
It is!
I’m rather happy that I don’t know of a Tom Ford counter near me. This quad is right up my alley. Though I would not buy it site unseen.
Definitely a good thing for your wallet 🙂
I loved the color theme itself. Pretty shades! All 4 of them!
They are really nice together!
The palette is kinda nice, colors i would wear since i have warm undertones… But that price its just ridiculous
Different strokes for different folks! 🙂
I’m really glad I passed on this! Agree with you completely– his eyeshadow palettes are really inconsistent but when they’re good, they’re amazing!
I really wish they were more consistent, because it’s like you never know what you’re going to get!
There’s nothing here that’s worth $78.00 in my opinion. These colors are dupable for the fraction of the cost. Honestly, between the Naked palettes and Too faced Chocolate bar palette, I’m sure anyone could find nice dupes.
I’m glad you have alternatives you like better!
It does look like a really nice palette. I do thing it’s expensive as heck though. But hey, if you’re a person that can afford it, go for it! (You = general usage here.)
And yet, not the most expensive eyeshadow palette you can buy 😉
Yikes, that is expensive! I wonder how much it will be in Switzerland… I get nervous just thinking about it, lol.
Is Tom Ford really marked up there?
This is a great quad, but it doesn’t seem worth $78. For an A rating it might be worth a splurge, possibly.
I agree – would like it to be more like A/A- territory!
The colors look so pretty, but I can’t justify paying almost $80 for four eye shadows. I’ll be looking at the dupes in stead.
Hopefully the dupes help you out!
This is a gorgeous palette! I wish the last shade performed better. It’s the prettiest one!
Me too!
I’m glad this rates higher than the previous one you reviewed! 😉
Haha, I was happy to find it was at least decent 🙂
That’s pretty. I have a question for you are product placement. I understand that you can’t wear eye liner on your upper lash line. Can you wear shadow there? I think you would look great with a dark shadow used in lieu of liner. That would define your lash line and probably help your lashes look thicker.
Hi Liz,
Yes, I have tried that. Even with applying eyeshadow, sometimes I have issues if I get too close to my lashes (I usually try to get close but not right up against them). Thank you for your advice, but not being to line there is something I’m used to and am totally okay with 🙂
This looked like a more grown up version of Naked3, although it seems almost as shimmery in the swatches (my main problem with the naked palettes). I love #3 but can’t really justify the price for 1 colour!
Yes, two of the shades are very shimmery for sure!
B+ is still inexcusably low for that price point. If you’re going to charge $78 for a 4-pan palette, it has to be absolutely perfect or stunningly unique.
There shouldn’t be any duds!
Love the look you did with this quad, Christine but these shades are all so dupe-able for a neutrals/browns lover like me and at basically 90 bucks here in Canada, I will opt for the dupes I have.
Thanks, Mariella! I agree – they’re easily duped, so it’s not a must!
This quad looks so effortless and natural on you 🙂 I agree B+ is a bit of a fail for makeup this expensive, but it is a pretty palette! 😀
I always like the way Tom For’ds eyeshadow palettes look – like, in the pan. I just like looking at them, somehow!
Thanks, Sylirael! It’s definitely a very flattering combo on my skin tone and colors I’d reach for if, you know, I actually wore things over and over again 😉
Love the palette but from the review it just seems like a miss to me.
It isn’t perfect for sure!
Ok no, at that price point it needs to be an A/A+. Darnit, it was on my wish list too. oh well….
At least it saves your wallet 🙂
I really love this Tom Ford quad! Among the few I have, I was impressed by this one because it’s super smooth and creamy, as compared to the others that are quite dry and lesser in pigmentation. They have extended wear time, too! Without fading!! Ahh. I love this palette a lot! I’ve reviewed and posted my look on it in my blog but wont link it here as I believe that’s impolite? Anyway, thanks for the honest review Christine!
Happy to hear you’re enjoying your quad, Shari!
This looks like my sort of palette. Good to see it performs better than the Silver palette you reviewed earlier this week. Again I like it a lot but not sure if I would spend that amount of money on it!
I think it should be an A to justify the price!
Hi Christine, I was wondering which Tom Ford eyeshadow palette you would recommend. I really want to splurge on one, but I am scared it will be a miss (like Ice Queen and, to a lesser extent, this one). Is there one in the permanent range you think is much better than any other? I know you reviewed the limited edition ones (there was a blue one in there, I think), and these got high ratings, but by god they were a shimmer explosion!
Orchid Haze is one of the better ones… honestly, one that doesn’t have the glitter shade, lol!
Thank you so much for replying, Christine! I might just splurge on brushes then, because the eyeshadow quality doesn’t seem worth the price.
As wonder as this eyeshadow quad might be, i can not justify the $78 price!!! Absolutely ridiculous! For $80 i can drown myself with a multiple of goods from Sephora or Ulta (even MAC)
Yes, Tom Ford is a very pricey and luxury-level brand!
I do love these colors! The combination is gorgeous for my brown eyes but the bareminerals ready shadows get solid A’s almost every time for much less sticker shock. I think I would pass this and just look for dupes.
