5 Beautiful Burgundy Eyeshadows
Reader Vinita requested top five picks of burgundy and red-toned purple eyeshadows–just in time for fall! It can be a difficult color for some to wear, because of the red tones, but try pairing it with warmer golds and coppers, or using it with a bright silver. It can be even used mixed with black in the crease to create a very dramatic smoky eye. You can also look for burgundies that lean brown to minimize the red tones found in them.
- MAC Deep Damson — a deep, dark burgundy-brown with a matte finish
- Le Metier de Beaute Fig — a purpled burgundy with a frosted finish
- Inglot #452 — shimmering burgundy with strong red undertones
- Make Up For Ever #311 — shimmery, deep brown-burgundy
- MAC Cranberry — medium-dark burgundy with a frost finish
Thanks Vinita and Christine for this post! Great suggestions on how to wear this beautiful color. I own mostly burgundy eyeliners and the red tones can indeed be unforgiving if not paired right…
Eyeshadows can be a bit easier, as you can keep them away from the waterline more – and you can also use them as an accent vs. something all over!
I LOVE LOVE LOVE burgundy eye shadows, my favorite is MAC’s Sketch I wear it almost every day as an eyeliner or on top of a black eyeliner. If I am doing a dramatic look I may put it in my crease as well. It really helps to bring out my blue eyes!
Sketch is classic!
I actually do not even own a burgundy shadow. The closest I have is probably something in the BOS3 from UD. I tend to avoid anything too red-based but looking at the MUFE shadow above, I’m thinking I might give it a try or maybe MAC Cranberry.
Definitely consider them – and maybe look for a browner one, not as red-toned 🙂
I bought Ebloui (the closest to a cranberry that I own) with some doubts and while I’m glad I got it, I don’t honestly think I look my best wearing it. Maybe it’s just because it’s different from my “comfort zone” and I have to remind myself that “change is good, Donkey”! I need to experiment with colour combos for it. Any suggestions, Christine.
I’m a total sucker for cranberry/berry/burgundy colors with golds. It can also work well with silver, too, but I’m a sucker for gold + cranberry. Something like this – http://www.temptalia.com/summer-makeup-the-setting-sun
You’re amazing! Thanks so much for finding that and posting it for me, Christine. I think I might just give it a try tomorrow (I’ll be home since the Labour Day Parade makes it impossible for me to get to the gym or the yoga studio!) and since I’ll be home, if I think it looks weird, I don’t have to worry about anyone seeing it except DH and MIL (and she has more tact than anyone I know and wouldn’t say anything if she found it odd-looking!)
Happy to help!! 🙂
Awesome!! Thank you for answering my request! I’ll definitely be checking these out as this color has been an obsession lately lol. You’re the best! =))))
My pleasure, Vinita! xo
The Inglot shade is gorgeous! Thank you Christine! 😉
No problem!
I love using burgundies and cranberries in my crease. They get me that drama without being over the top
I have the make up forever eyeshadow it’s a very nice one it applies very nicely on the lids. This is a great colour to make green eyes pop.
all the shades are lovely, i use revlon colorstay eye shadows.
Thank you for this post! As a green eyed gal, I am always on the hunt for great burgundy shadows.
Happy to help! Do you have any faves?
Deep Damson is my favourite burgundy ever! Matte and silky at the same time, can be a bit tough when it comes to blending but is way better than Sketch. It took me forever to find it but it was worth it!
Deep Damson looks gorgeous! I just realized I don’t have any burgundy eyeshadow in my stash. I do have some browns and purples that have a little burgundy in them, but the five that you showed here are really amazing and I think I need to get me one of them 🙂
I have always wanted MAC cranberry, but I don’t know would it look good on brown eyes. Anyone with brown eyes, what shadows do you pair cranberry with?
Golds, browns, coppers, purples, plums, pinks, beiges.
I pair it with black or dark brown in the crease, with Cranberry on the lid & lower lashline. I then line the waterline & upper lashline in black, with a pearl highlighter, and neutral blush & lipstick. I find anything with a red tone really makes brown eyes pop, IMO.
I have brown eyes and love mac cranberry. It’s probably one of my favorite eyeshadows. I like to recreate the look from the apres chic collection promo image: cranberry in the outer half of the eye blended into the crease and all that glitters in the inner half. I get so many compliments when I do this and it’s super easy. It also looks great layered over maybelline color tatto in pomegranate punk.
I love the one on the bottom 🙂 really pretty!
This is completely my kinda thang with Burgandy being my favourite eyeshadow colour of all. No wonder I love Fall. Just this week I smoked out MAC Cranberry over a black cream base with Haux in the crease….amazing!
Other great burgandies: Burberry Mulberry, Illamasqua Forgiveness and Queen of the Night from the Complement palette, MAC Sketch, Sorcery, and pigment in Heritage, Armani ETK #2…
Queen of the Night is very nice!
I love these, and I’ve wanted Cranberry for ages! My favorite burgandy that I own is theBalm’s Sexy eyeshadow from the Nude ‘Tude palette! I wear it with the light pink and the light brown eyeshadow from the same palette. It’s absolutely gorgeous!
Cranberry is a must! It was one of my first ever eyeshadows 🙂
My favorite burgundy shadow is a Mega Metal shade by MAC called Sex-pectations. I love wearing it dramatically by smudging Zero UD liner on my lash line and blending it up. I put Sex-pectations on top of the liner and it creates a smokey purple color while maintaining the burgundy sheen. I usually work it up through the crease as well. If I want to have a lighter look on the lid I like to pair it with MAC Sable. I love wearing these shades because it totally makes my green eyes pop!
I wish MAC would bring this formula back!
Me too! Although since they are the larger pan size I doubt I’ll be running out anytime soon!
Oh I LOVEEEEE burgundy shadows! They are the absolute best for making my green eyes pop. My favorite is MAC Sexpectations, but I also love MUFE #311 and theBalm Sexy from the Nude ‘tude pallette – that one is a fantastic matte burgundy. I like to wear them in the crease with a peachy color like UD X on the lid. It makes a gorgeous sunset eye!
My fav is cranberry by Mac, I wanna get sketch but I’m not sure I have use for both, whats your opinion? 🙂
Sketch is browner and more matte, so they serve different functions because of the drastic difference in finish!
I was waiting for this! Thanks for the great idea Vinita.
I feel that red toned and burgundy eyeshadows will be very on trend this fall.
Fig has been on my wishlist for a good while now and I think this convinced me even more to just go for it! ^^
pourrais-tu me donner les 5 meilleurs rouge à lèvre bordeaux !!! Merci Christina ;; 🙂
I love, love, love Deep Damson! With blue eyes, I tend to shy away from red toned shadows, but Deep Damson works and I love it.
Now you’re talking! I love burgundy eyeshadows, blushes, nail polish and lippies. Shoot, I wear burgundy eyeshadows and blush all year round. I’m looking for a more brown based burgundy eyeshadow…all my burgundy shadows lean toward red tones. I only own Mac’s Sketch (one of my first eyeshadows), Love’s Lore (LE) ) and Cranberry, which all turn somewhat dark red on my NC 55 lids (lol). Bring on the burgundy!
Love Diors 5 color pallet in stylish move. Lots of muted burgandies and a warm grey.easy to soften the burgandies or really show them off.
Love your “5” series…
MAC Cranberry is one of my favorites for autumn!!
Oh my gosh, I love the MAC Cranberry – the frost finish would really make it pop against my brown eyes. Thanks for such a helpful post!
Love them all! Great post:)
Love this post! Would love to see a lipstick version, too! Thanks!
