Kat Von D Proud Peacock Waterproof Autograph Pencil ($10.00 for 0.028 oz.) is described as a “deep gray green.” It’s a smoldering, blackened green-tinted teal with a pearly sheen. Make Up For Ever #20L is similar in color but less shimmery. Make Up For Ever #4K is matte and less blackened. Urban Decay Loaded is darker. Urban Decay Invasion is less green and more matte. MAC Dark Envy is a gel eyeliner, but it is similar in color–slightly greener. See comparison swatches.

During Sephora’s sale earlier this year, I saw this formula and loved that they came in smaller sizes because the price tag was also smaller–and you know me, I love all things teal. It was surprisingly a let-down, because the texture was waxy but stubborn so it tugged and pulled at the lash line. Then, the color payoff was uneven and semi-opaque. I really couldn’t build-up the color well enough to get rich, opaque color. It’s supposed to last eight hours and be waterproof, too, and on me, it lasted six hours well, and it had migrated to the outer corners somewhat by the eighth hour. It seemed water-resistant but did smudge slightly when I rubbed at it with water.

Sad that this under-performed. The KvD pencils might be my favorites! I have the matte black, dark brown, a super pretty LE navy blue, and the dark plummy purple. No problems like this with any of them! Perhaps this one is an anomaly or they changed the formula.

Sephora has come out with some new pencil liners that are just fantastic and only cost $11 (CDN) – I imagine they’re considerably cheaper in the US. And they have a colour very much like this – but BETTER in terms of application.

This may be an odd question but did you try out one pencil and not two or more? I know buying tons of them isn’t cheap but what I’m getting at here is just the way factories work: they produce an item en masse and only test one out of XYZ samples. This sampling technique checks whether the average quality is high enough to meet the factory’s standards, but that doesn’t mean that there can’t be a rotten apple which goes unnoticed.

All I’m saying is: this may be a rotten apple and not necessarily very representative of the results all the pencils will get you. I’m not affiliated to KvD in any way btw. I’m saying reviewing a product based on one purchase may not always lead to reliable results. On the other hand, who can afford to buy ten of each you know? I understand it’s a balancing act, but just wanted to point it out.

Hi Ely,

I only bought two, but one didn’t arrive (it was missing), so I only received that a little while ago and haven’t had a chance to photograph and swatch. I’ve tried Black Metal, which was better, but not great. Immortal Love had better color payoff but the wear wasn’t great. My experience with these has been all over the map, over the 3 years I’ve tested them!

Beautiful color, but sadly an underperforming product since even the swath looks bad. Make up forever doesn´t exist here and I´m sad to see the Mac Dark Envy be limited edition, so I guess I will have to hope for another Mac similar product.
