7 Must-Have MAC Brown Lipsticks

About the Temptalia Must-Haves Series

A series of posts showcasing must-have products from MAC Cosmetics’ permanent line of products. Selections are based on quality, universality, uniqueness amongst the line, and the like. Limited edition shades are deliberately excluded to make buying easier. Readers’ comments act as a supplement to these lists of their favorites and must-haves. You can find the entire series here.

Twig lipstick is a creamy, semi-sheer pink with brownie-pink. It’s almost like a really deep, flesh-toned color.

Stay In Touch lipstick is a creamy, soft-sheen yellow-based brown that goes on fairly opaque, but it is wearable even for those wary of brown.

Spirit lipstick is a semi-sheer beige-based brown with just a touch of pink in it.

See four more!

Touch lipstick is a sheer, almost-glossy brown with peachy undertones.

Dare You lipstick is a creamy, opaque browned down red–almost a brick shade.

Verve lipstick is a semi-sheer, plummy brown shade that goes on naturally and doesn’t look over the top.

Retro lipstick is a fun shade of pinky-red brown with a semi-sheer, light sheen finish.

What are your favorite brown lipsticks?

Please keep discussion on-topic, and if you have general feedback, a product review request, an off-topic question, or need technical support, please contact us!

Please help us streamline the comments' section and be more efficient: double-check the post above for more basic information like pricing, availability, and so on to make sure your question wasn't answered already. Comments alerting us to typos or small errors in the post are appreciated (!) but will typically be removed after errors are fixed (unless a response is needed).

We appreciate enthusiasm for new releases but ask readers to please hold questions regarding if/when a review will be posted as we can't commit to or guarantee product reviews. We don't want to set expectations and then disappoint readers as even products that are swatched don't always end up being reviewed due to time constraints and changes in priorities! Thank you for understanding!

On me, Dare You is almost a wine red, with zero brown in it at all…I love it, but I wouldn’t call it brown.

I am still searching for a brown that looks good on me.

Yeah, Dare You is almost identical to Dubonnet on me, just a bit creamier texture. I swapped away my Dubonnet ‘cuz I liked Dare You better!

The only perm l/s I have that I’d classify as brown is Shag, but it’s more copper than straight brown. But I like a lot of brown-tinted LE ones: Retrofluid, Dangerously Hot, Russe, Real Treasure, Buoy oh Buoy. These are not that brown, though, just “brown tinted” on me.

I like Sheer Plum which, despite its name, isn’t plum at all. And Honeyflower, the only lipstick I saw the bottom of.

Astral l/s from Naughty Nauticals is a beautiful brown and it’s the only brown l/s I have and I wear it with Get Rich Quick Dazzleglass!

I really like Paramount layered with Frenzy – on me (NC43), its a shmmery brown yet neither orangish nor copper. I like Touch too but it doesnt last much. Retro and O both turn rather reddish-berryish on me =(

Great picks Christine! It figures that someone with my name would share my taste in lipstick. 🙂 I love and own Twig and Verve. I just purchased Touch and love that one also–those peachy browns often turn too “yellow” on me but this one is just right, a great daily color for the office. I’d also add Polished Up, if that one counts (although it veers more towards the plum side). I’ll try the other suggestions some times, thanks for the picks!
