Look – MAC Style Black: Dark Smoky Eyes

MAC Style Black Look: Dark Smoky Eyes

Just a quick Style Black I through together this morning before I took a shower. I’m not sold on mineralize eyeshadows whatsoever! I applied these mineralize eyeshadows wet using water-based mixing medium (for better adhesion and to minimize fall out). Admittedly, it’s all over a significantly dark base, so maybe that’s why they just don’t pop much. I did two different lips — the first is the lip I’d actually pair with it (based on my style and preferences); the second is with black lips as requested.

Two notes:  I’m wearing Korres’ Wild Rouse Foundation in this look.  (I think the shade may be a lil’ orange on me–not sure if going a shade lighter will help or not yet.)  One eye has a stronger distinction between crease and highlight (which, to be honest, looked fine in real life) that I would recommend blending out more in practice.

You will need the following…

  • Eyes: Soft Ochre paint pot (neutral beige base), Dark Soul pigment (dark black-gray), Gilt By Association mineralize eyeshadow (black-bronze), Young Punk mineralize eyeshadow (black-purple), Blue Flame eyeshadow (dark blue), Femme-fi eyeshadow (neutral highlighter), Black Greasepaint Stick (black with purple shimmer), Stila Purple Pumps Smudge Pot (purple shimmer), Plushlash mascara (black)
  • Cheeks: Plum Foolery blush (pinky-purple)
  • Lips: Brave New Bronze lipstick (pinky nude), Bling Black glimmerglass (dirty antique gold)
  • Brushes: 266 (firm, angled brush), 226 (fluffy crease brush), 219 (pointed crease brush), 214 (smudge brush), 249 (flat, firm brush), 239 (fluffy shadow brush), 129 (dense blush brush)
  • Substitutes: Gilt By Association = Tempting; Young Punk = Contrast; Blue Flame = Deep Truth; Femme-fi = Shroom; Black Greasepaint = Smolder; Brave New Bronze = Velvet Teddy; Bling Black = Reflects Antique Gold + Black Lip Mix + Clear gloss

Directions: Define brows using a coordinating powder shadow applied with the 266 brush. Apply Soft Ochre paint pot all over the lid as the base with the 249. With the 239, apply Dark Soul pigment with water-based mixing medium on the lower lid. On the inner lid, pack Gilt by Association eyeshadow on using the 239. Apply Young Punk eyeshadow to the middle and outer portions of the lid. Darken crease with Blue Flame eyeshadow using the 226. Sweep Femme-fi eyeshadow underneath the brow bone to highlight. Finish with Black Greasepaint stick on lower lash line, and Stila Purple Pumps smudge pot on lower lash line with 209. Apply Plushlash mascara on lashes. Sweep apples of cheeks with Plum Foolery blush using the 129. Apply Brave New Bronze lipstick to lips, and then top with Bling Black glimmerglass for color and shine.

I think this look is gorgeous, especially with the dark lips, you pulled it off well. Thanks for all you do!

  2. Kelly says:

I love the look, but agree, the colors do kinda look mellowed out.

It’s amazing what a difference a lipstick can make! The first pic looks smoky and hot. The second pic looks immediately goth LOL!

  3. Suzanne says:

You look so gothic with the black lip lmao!

  4. Nikki says:

wow..that is one wild look but hey, you still managed to pull the black lipstick off :) love it

  5. inuchan says:

High five for the last pic !!!!

This is a greaaaaaaaaaaat way to pull a black lip :)

  6. Hinahon says:

I really like this look !
    Why don’t you like it?

  7. Torie says:

Wow! Lol I can tell what you think in the last picture for sure. My 12yr old wants the lips and I like the eye. I like the closeups better though bc I can see the diff colors. I have to admit though I like the darker lip more than the other. I could see me where this to the office. They would prob send me home though for violating some dress code. You are gorgeous no matter which colors you put on. I’m jealous.(sorry I like to ramble:))

  8. Audrey says:

LOVE the eyes!!! I go back and forth on if I should get the Brave New Bronze lipstick, probably too late now :)

And from the pics, I would have thought it was more of a coral-y blush, looks great!

  9. Dani says:

How were the MES? Did you have a lot of fallout?

  10. Nepenthe says:

I think you’re right about the foundation, but aside from that I think both looks are great. :]

I like that you used three of the shadows so we could see how they appear next to each other.

    Thanks!

  11. Lisha says:

The dark lips + dark eyes = not good XD
But the first pictures with the nude lips are gorgeous.

  12. ashbash says:

i like the look with the black lip but not with the coral/neutral lip. absolutely nothing wrong with the black lip look.

  13. Bridgette says:

Love the look and you definitely pulled off the black lipstick.

  14. abbyl says:

for some reason the black lip look reminds of that trend from the mid 90s (like seventh grade for me) where we wore too dark lip liner… love the eyes though! and the neutral lip!

  15. Alexis says:

Your eyes look great – I felt that Blue Flame had pop when placed on top of Bat Black CCB when I tried it on. Now I’m rethinking my purchases which I am excited to pickup today!!! Black lip combo – not so much…maybe with a neutral eye…MAYBE!!

HA – I’m just feeling too old to try to pull off full on black lips. Maybe if I was still in my mod days and I was 15 again!

  16. Katherine says:

Love the eye look – I know you’re not a huge fan, but I can’t wait to see these e/s in person today. Don’t like the black lippie at all – just my humble opinion.

  17. Ella says:

    Wow the e/s looks great.

  18. Rachael says:

I actually love the eyes! I think it looks sulty and sexy! I really don’t like black lipstick, I just don’t get the vampy look….but with the nude lip, I think you look fantastic! I think the blush is a little too pink to work with the look.

  19. Jennifer says:

You could kick ass and rule the world with the black lipstick Christine!

I do dig the nude/pink with the eye…I might have to check out this collection, if only I had money…Oh, well who needs money when there is credit cards! lolz :)

  20. Rachel says:

Love the E/s Christina! & the brave new bronze*favveee color* …but the black lips are a bit to much…you pull it off, but I guess if I tried I’d look way to goth. ick.

  21. Jamie says:

darn! I could have used this look for the wedding I went to last weekend. The e/s colors were all in the dress that I wore.

I don’t like the black lipstick but it makes your lips look amazing (shapewise)

  22. DevilishDoll says:

WOW! Both looks are hot as hell! Great work, Christine! Now I totally can’t wait to play around with my stuff when it gets here.

  23. Sara says:

you look gorgeous! THanks for the looks and the tut!

  24. charlene says:

I love iiitttttt!!! I love tihs on you Christine, wow wow with the nude lips too!!!! DAMN!

  25. Rebecca says:

    Christine,

Your hair looks amazing! It seems to be growing really fast!

  26. Nicole15 says:

Christine – you mentioned you were wearing the Korres Wild Rose Foundation right?? I have been wearing their foundation too I love it, but the color I thought would be best for me (WRF 3) was too dark/orange. Im typically an NC 20/25. So, I went with the WRF 2 and it has been perfect. I really am loving the foundation overall color/coverage it gives. Another 2 thumbs up for Korres!

  27. Sass says:

Its wearable to me. Loving the look Christine!

  28. Shauna says:

Very nice e/s look. I like that black l/s but I could never pull that one off.

  29. Manda says:

love the eye! wow, its my fave of yours so far i think! going today to get some stuff frmo the black collection and you may have just sold me on gilt by association haha where did you use purple pumps? i bought that last week so ill pretty much have all of the items you used and im excited to try and recreate this!! thank u!

  30. Almost black. says:

Argh, now I think I have to get young punk MES :D :) )) It’s all your fault! :D

  31. lovepotion18 says:

gorgeous! love both looks with the change of l/s color! you can rock goth, christine!!

  32. Elle says:

ROWR. I love what you did with the products! I can’t wait to try the eyes. You look hot in the black lipstick, girl!

  33. Vanessa says:

I LOVE the look with the nude lips.. and I also love this blush you paired with it. I may have to check that one out! ; ] You can never have enough blush.

  34. Livia says:

wow! You pulled it off… I’m actually re-thinking getting the black lipstick now coz of this look.

  35. I love the look! Gorgeous!

  36. Christy says:

Great eye look! I can’t wait to try it out. Have you tried using a 242 instead of a 239 brush to apply MES wet? I found that there’s less fall out that way. The black lips look fun, but not something I’d do often. Bling Black doesn’t really show much on though, so I may just get some glitter and gloss instead.

  37. Daphnee says:

    I LOVE the EYES!

  38. lmnmakeup says:

This is my favorite look by far with the nude lips. Love it!

  39. Whirl says:

    Too much,way TOO MUCH blush!
And the color of the blush is completely wrong!
There should be light “barely-there” beigy flesh colored one.
This blush just ruins the whole effect.
And the look with the black lips requires pale chick, otherwise the blush makes it look clownish.
But besides this everything is nice.

  40. Bettina says:

oh wow that’s awesome, you look great. I think I need some of this stuff in time for Halloween.

  41. Catherine says:

WOW. I absolutely LOVE the intense smokey eye – it’s stunning, especially with neutral lips. Bravo!

  42. jess says:

I love it, I think it’s sexy! The blush does feel a bit overpowering with the neutral lips, though.

  43. LUCY says:

You look so gorgeous~~~~!!!! LOVE IT~~!!

  44. Anitacska says:

I love the eyes, really pretty. :) Agree about the foundation, does look terribly orange though. Dont like the black lips either, but wasnt planning on getting any black lip stuff anyway.

  45. Laura says:

Love the dark eyes/light lips combo!

  46. Reese says:

I love the eyeshadow combo that you used. I have to try it! And you pull off both lip colors very well :) I cant wait to get my order in the mail and play with this collection.

  47. Andrea says:

LOVE IT!!!! So crazy what a black lip does to a look!!! The eye looks amazing!!!

  48. Erynn says:

Very cute look-I dont have the confidence to pull off a look like this but I think its great the way you did it. It remids me of the Kat Von D look although you are a bit tanner than she appears to be. Overall I love it, blush and all. I like both lippies as well, just that the black carries the look to the more daring side. Yayyy Christine!

  49. Jennifer says:

    Hi Christine,
I am a total fan of you and your site. Love it!
    I just have a suggestion:
Next time can you take a full face picture while sort of looking down. that way i can completely see the eyeshadow as well as the made up face.
    Thanks,

  50. Ladybug says:

Thats so hot! The eyes are beautifully done!

  51. verybecca says:

Wow – I love the dramatic dark eyes!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  52. liz says:

girl, you actually dont look bad with black lips; but if youre not used to it, its definitely the shock of seeing it on that makes you think its bad. just like the first red lip you try lol. but i kinda like the shimmeryness of the shadows, though i dont think i like it enough to buy it. also, i cant see the whole thing, but is that necklace from hm? it looks like one i have lol

  53. Rae says:

Ahh!! Absolutely stunning. This is going directly into my inspiration folder! ^^

  54. KaylaK says:

    Love it!

  55. Darby says:

I am head over heels, madly in love with this look! I love that its dark and smoky but still has a surprising amount of color. I wasn’t planning on getting much from Style Black but now I may have to!

  56. amy says:

I really like the second look actually because it really shows off the collection of dark makeup colours for this season. I like that you use almost all the Style Black products to show off the product and the line. It is a very fun look to go out with once in a blue moon like clubbing or party. :)

    • Christine says:

Thanks a lot, Amy :D That’s kind of my goal – use as many products from the collection as I can, lol! It can be hard, though, sometimes I want to grab for other shades that may work better *but* I resist!

  57. Queenie says:

I love the dark smokey eye and the nude lips! Great job!

  58. Rose says:

The eyes are super hot and I love the nude lips! You’re so pretty. BNB is my favorite nude lipstick and you’ve just convinced me I need that gloss :)

  59. Maria says:

you totally look like a rockstar!!!

  60. Catherine says:

This eye look is FANTABULOUS. I am so not a fan of MAC’s MES but I have to say, Gilt by Association looks soooo pretty on you in this look! The gold really pops in the full face pictures even though it’s not that noticeable on the closeups. I’m also impressed at how Brave New Bronze looks w/ the gloss on top. Truly adds a whole new dimension!

And yea… you’re right about the Korres Rose foundation – it is def too orange for you. =/

  61. Chiara says:

Gorgeous look! Both with beige and black lips. I like the fact that the black of the glimmerglass doesn’t show up at all over the pale lipstick.

  62. DJ says:

How fun! thanks for sharing :)

  63. cuccy says:

please please please do a video tut on this look!

  64. Valeria says:

u look totally gorgeous on both looks! the nude lip look is wearable and the black lip adds a kick! love them both, good job!

  65. Carmen says:

I just loved the eye look, Christine, particularly for nighttime, with the pale lips. You did a fantastic job!
I’m afraid the black lipstick didn’t do it for me, but then, I don’t think most women can pull it off without looking goth-ish, or ready for Halloween.

  66. Cheryl says:

You probably have the prettiest eyes Ive EVER seen!

  67. Jessica says:

    I Love the look :)
    You look very pretty♥

  68. claudia says:

Wow, Thanks so much for the full ” style black look ” ….
    So pretty !!!
You are a pretty girl, have gorgeous mouth/lips and a pretty smile, so naturally everything looks nice on you, but I think the black lippie is a bit strange … I’m more fond of the first look!!! The eyes are amazing :) The Stilla Purple Pumps looks fab too :D

  69. nichole says:

i like them both, i did a similar look yesterday with the nude lip as well, i don’t think i can pull off a black lip the way you do! go girl!

  70. Kim says:

You must be tired of hearing this but you look fantastic! xoxo

  71. Joanna says:

    WOW !

that’s all i can say for this look.
both neutral lip and black lip.

    =D

    i wanna ask though.

i can’t decide on to get young punk or blue flame.

    =[

which colour pays off better ?
and does the colour look 100% like in the picture.
coz i love the picture colour.

ooh and which do you prefer love ?

    thank you !

  72. Ki says:

OMG i love the eyes. Not sure about the summery blush with the black lips, but I think the blush was meant to go with the first lip look? BTW I would love to see you with a brown smokey eye.

  73. Coco says:

Oh wow you look so so pretty!! You always do :D .
    Thanks for the tut.
    regards,
    Coco

I’m Katie from China, nice to meet you!

  76. Anya says:

wow, this is amazing. although i would only go out on a regular night with the subdued lip. i’ll save the black lip stick for halloween ;)
    you look beautiful!

  77. Andrea says:

Gorgeous the combination of purple and black the dark and the cream lips
    are Gorgeous too

  78. Sash says:

This is too freakin sexy! Save it for your bedroom. I’m sure your boyfriend will appreciate it;). lol

  79. Jens7lil1s says:

Your eyes look super and Brave new Bronze is beautiful on you. It looks totally different on me. I don’t know if I will ever thing black looks look good on anyone though. They just look gangsta to me. Lol.
