Chanel Tentation Cuivree Eyeshadow Quad
Chanel Tentation Cuivree Eyeshadow Quad

Chanel Holiday 2010: Tentation Cuivree

Chanel Tentation Cuivree Eyeshadow Quad ($56.00 for 0.24 oz.) is new for holiday, and just like everything else in the collection, it is also limited edition. It’s a rather neutral quad with a smoky brown edge. I actually mean neutral in overall color scheme while the undertone is slightly warm but not much so.

The quad consists of a medium-dark cocoa brown with flecks of silver and bronze shimmer-glitter; softened champagne with a frost finish; high-shine light-medium pink with subtle yellow undertones; and a dark cocoa brown with flashes of molten bronze shimmer. Chanel’s eyeshadow quads can be used wet or dry (with no effect on the eyeshadows themselves), and the two lighter shades look about the same regardless, while both browns deepen. Funny enough, when used wet, the darkest brown seems to loses some of the copper flecks.

Overseas, the circular eyeshadow pans are the norm, while U.S. quads come in square pans typically. I’m not sure whether the change is just for holiday or going forward. I think I prefer the square pans; perhaps that pyramid shape lends it a bit of sophistication that the circular pans lack. It almost looks like a knockoff to me, but I imagine that’s also due to the fact that I’m not used to seeing it that way more than anything.

I don’t love this eyeshadow quad, and I don’t think it’s exactly the same in texture as other quads. It’s not quite as buttery or as smooth. I had some trouble with the medium brown swatching dry, though it sure came together when used wet. This quad is shimmer-heavy, with both of the brown shades having more of a micro-glitter effect than shimmer/sheen, so there is a touch of fall out, which I don’t usually associate with Chanel.

It’s nice but not knock-your-socks-off stunning. I like but don’t love, you know? The quality just isn’t quite there for me, and the abundance of shimmer and frost (and even a bit of glitter) came as a surprise. It’s worth taking a peek at, though!

RECOMMENDATION: I think warmer beauties will find it very easy to use and a good go-to for smoky brown looks. It will still be nice on cooler skin, but it may not feel quite as complimentary (if you find warmer browns go red on you, I’d skip this).

yay! looking forward to a look with this quad. The Chanel sales girl caked it on me during a “makeover” and I ended up with all 1 color on my eyes even though I knew she used most of the palette. go figure! :)

  2. I really like this! Funnily I actually prefer the round pans, but that’s what I’m used to. :)

I bought this last week and loved it. It it as you say neutral — I have very fair, cool-toned skin, and it looked good on me, while my warmer-toned neighbor likes it as well.

It’s not attention-getting, but it’s very pretty and subtle and works for lower-key looks, even for the holidays. I know mileage varies but to me it was an A- at least :).

I was thinking the lighter colors actually looked really cool-friendly. I’m thinking it has a lot to do with the shimmer, and how it looks like it’s reflecting white.

  4. I don’t like Chanel’s Eyeshadow Quads – too expensive and still terrible in any way – from application to lasting power. Pure waste of money for me. :/

  5. Dana

is it just me, or are the colors in this palette too similar to each other? for the price, i would like the colors to be distinctly different..

  6. Jen

It’s funny, I bought this palette over the weekend and tried it for the first time this morning. It’s my first Chanel purchase and I have to say I am a *little* disappointed. There was SO much fallout, I think the glitter went everywhere BUT my eyelids – there is absolutely no glitter left whatsoever.

Aside from that, the colors are beautiful even when they are glitter free and I love the look I achieved with it, so I guess I’ll keep it :)

    • Aww :( I’m glad you liked the results, at least, but I would have been disappointed, too, if this was my first Chanel quad!

Try using an eye shadow base or primer. I had very little fall out. A base really does make a difference with baked formulas.

      • I used a base and still had noticeable fall out – what base did you use?

        • Jen

I used UDPP as usual and still ended up with micro-glitter all over my face… I’m going to try something stickier and see what happens!

        • Eileen

I used a base by Kanebo. It works very well on dry skin and doesn’t dry matte like so many other bases/:primers. Perhaps that’s why I had better luck: my base gave something for the micro glitter to adhere to. Working with the new quad, I also used a soft brush to pat the color on; then I blended. As I said, I had very little fall out.

Hi! I wanted to get myself a Chanel quad for my bday present to myself… Which one would you rec? :)

I wasn’t sure about this quad. I looked at it once and then came back a couple nights later and picked it up. It is different it seems from other Chanel quads because of the amount of shimmer but that is part of the reason I like it, even though 90% of the time I avoid shadows with tons of shimmer. I also like the looks I have been able to achieve w/this.

I heard the shadows in here are baked and wasn’t the typical US version..that is why it is different. Even the placement of where the brushes is different from my reg quads. I’m still happy I got this though, the colors together are really pretty!

I loved the colors so much I bought it this weekend. I think a B is a pretty accurate grade. I dont care for the applicators. I love the pink shade, I look great in pinks, but this one is a bit sheer. It needs some layering. The browns go almost purple on me, which is fine since I look good in those too, but I think its just odd how the colors arent as true to the pan as they could be. I’m still keeping it! It creates a subtler smokey eye, imo. I do wish it had been the square pans instead of circular, and the products seem baked, which always end up sheerer on me (NC15 in MAC). I was surprised by all the microglitter and shimmer in so many of their eyeshadows since this is a line that older women are supposed to wear. All in all, I’d buy it again!

  10. Dini

Bummer about the quad. It looks so pretty, but I don’t love the way it swatched. Thanks for the swatches! For the price of these quads, I have to love love love each and every color.

We can only buy the round pans in Canada, so I’m used to them. I don’t mind the shape, but sometimes I wish we were forced to buy the baked versions! I’m going to check out this one in person before I make up my mind. Glitter and shimmer have a way of tempting me, even if there is a bit of fallout. I’m hoping Chanel has stepped up their game; I am quite happy with the quality of the round pan versions of Enigma and Kaska Beige.

  12. Eileen

It’s not just the shape that is different. It is actually the Euro/Asian formula which is baked. That is why you’re noticing a different texture. You’ll also end up with more “dust” in the pan when using these. It’s my understanding that Chanel is consolidating their manufacturing operations so we’ll undoubtedly be seeing more of the baked eye shadows and blushers.

I really like Tentation Cuivree for it’s lovely copper undertones. My skin is quite light (Chanel Ivoire .07 is my summer color!), so the colors stand out on my skin as being decidedly pink and coppery, but I’ve also seen looks done with this palette on much darker complexions and it looks sultry and sexy. I use the blush tinged ivory on the brown bone, the soft warm pink on the lid, the medium brown in the crease, the < , and along the upper and lower lash line. I then use the eyeliner in Cassis and smoke it out with the darkest brown which is a rich warm brown shot through with copper sparkles. This is a look of contrasts, but everything about it says rich copper and glowing embers. I found the colors have good pigmentation, blend easily, and wear very well. And, although there is dust left behind in the pans, I had very little fall out upon application and none throughout the day.

I have a LOve Hate relationship with this quad. I honestly hate working with it, since the lighter shades are too damn similar; plus, the lighter and medium shadows need a sh1t load amount of work to get them to show up, but using them wet, they’re gorgeous. I like the color combo a lot, though.

  14. Courtney

As much as I like the color pallets in the Chanel quads, I just can’t justify spening that much money on them.

  15. Alisha in WI

Out of all the Chanel quads currently available, which one would you recommend? I’m NW25 for reference but on the neutral side so can wear both w & c shades.

  16. phuongk

i swatched in stores and didn’t like the extreme amount of flecks and shimmer so didn’t end up getting it but it really looks great in the advertisement so i’m torn. i love the colors scheme though.

  17. Michelle

The swatches look so different on every blog I’ve seen. It must have to do with lighting, etc and also skintone. I love my Enigma quad — I’ve seen a lot of bloggers do lovely looks with this one. I’ll have to see in person how the pigmentation is. Thanks for the swatches!

  18. The circular ones are apparently baked, and break less easy than the square! this is what the girl at chanel in the UK told me, I got a square one in the US, I do like the way it looks

    • That’s interesting – all of my baked products are more fragile than regular pressed powders! I mean, I have no way to know, and you won’t see me doing any testing on that, LOL!

  19. Eileen

I really really love the colours in this quad but wouldn’t buy it since the application isn’t great.

  20. Andreita

This quad is so beautiful *drools* : D

  21. Ekaterina

I think this palette is boring and not unique. I’m pass.

  22. Loeny

Only now have I recently been getting to know Chanel’s makeup line. My first purchase was the Inimitable Intense mascara (which I love! I bought it because of your review!). When I stopped by the counter to get the new Rouge Coco shade, the girl showed me this eye quad and in the back of my head I thought ‘What a shimmery mess! eww…’ I thought I was the only one that wasn’t crazy about this quad. I’ll pass on this one =/

  23. courtneyseaa

I really love this quad! The pink is beautiful!

  24. Bonnie

I swatched this in store and the shimmer was SO gorgeous. I would’ve bought it on the spot, but I forgot my wallet, so I ordered it with the Ombre and a couple other things when I got home. Cannot wait until I get it. I found the lighter shades to be sheerer, but I feel like I prefer the sheer shimmering sort of highlighters than the light beige highlighters, like Kaska Beige has. Still love that pallate, but I’m looking forward to a change.

  25. Nellie

Well, I’m certainly glad I bought this before seeing this review! I wouldn’t have bought it otherwise! :)

I actually love this quad. We have similar skintones (mine is more golden), but on me, it looks more like swatches I’ve seen on other blogs and forums. The two browns are definitely richer and clearly distinctive from each other. I also notice more of a difference between the two lighter shades. So strange! It’s definitely more unique than it appears.

I have little to no fallout during application over a paint pot. Over UDPP, I have some fallout during application but none during the day. (Not an issue for me; I do my eyes first.)

  26. karen

I can’t make up my mind on this quad. I think I would be sold on the colors if they didn’t have so much sparkle. I suppose without the sparkle it wouldn’t be as holiday-ish, perhaps.

  27. this is really pretty.. for some one with as many neutrals as one girl could ever need.. for some reason.. i see these browns as being unique..

    is that weird?

  28. Cheyenne (DemureAllure)

The way they swatch, they are definately not worth the price. These colors are pretty, but I can do way better. :)
Oh Chanel, when will you impress me enough to make me buy you??

  29. Caroline F.

Funny that most people don’t like this quad when on November 16, when the daily question was ‘which Holiday collection do you love most?’ most people anwered Chanel ?????????!!!!!!!!!!!?????????????
