Depends on how much effort I want to put in

I wear Estee Lauder Double Wear bc it covers and holds up in the heat. But if I want SPF and a little coverage I just wear a BB cream like Maybelline Dream Fresh. Otherwise I wear nothing.

I set with either Cover Girl’s Trublend or I lightly dust with Maybelline’s Master Fix loose powder

I have been LOVING either the It Cosmetics CC Cream and Bye Bye Under Eye set with the Cover FX Illuminating Setting Powder or the Too Faced Born This Way with the Bye Bye Under Eye and same setting powder! gives you the most beautiful, naturally luminous finish.

I’ve been using a mixture that I put together of Lumene BB Cream in Medium and Tarte Amazonian Clay Foundation in Medium Honey. For some reason, this combo seems very kind to my skin, it protects it, and is lightweight. I set it with WnW Reserve Your Cabana, and it lasts very well. Although, if I know that I’ll be out for an extended time and I know it’s soupy and hot out, then I’ll usually opt for my MAC Pro Longwear Foundation instead.

Rayna Avatar

Start with sunblock then I’ve been using Mac Face & Body. I’m in love with the way it looks. It’s about a medium coverage foundation so it doesn’t hide my flaws well (and there are many) but I don’t care. It does a great job evening out my skin and making those flaws less obvious. It looks just like dewy skin. There is also a white to lighten it if you need to like I do. I love it!

Still the Marc Jacobs Re(marc)able Full Coverage Foundation Concentrate. For summer, my skin is less dry, more normal, so I use over the Algenist Anti-Aging Blurring Moisturizer SPF 30 ( light moisturizer, primer, sunscreen all in one). The combo is mattifying, but holds up well to heat, and I add a powder highlighter in certain spots to add glow and dimension

Kylie5 Avatar

Have to try the cream from algenist.
How Do you apply the Marc Jacobs Foundation? I am still testing Different ways. I Love it really much but the End result still Could be better which has nothing to Do with the Foundation because it is Great. Just have not yet found the Perfect way for me to apply.

Katherine T. Avatar

I use the IT Velvet Luxe LBD Foundation Brush to gently buff and press it in, and I only need about 1/2-1 dot for entire face. It’s a fast drying foundation, so I do small sections of my face at a time. But if that doesn’t work, there are a lot of You Tube videos out there, with people using different brushes /sponges and different amounts, and they are getting some amazing results. I recall that you found a perfect color match, so hope you can make it work !

Johanna Avatar

Smashbox BB Water set with Make Up Store Wonder powder. It’s a mineral foundation with light coverage and a glowy/dewy finish and I use a darker one to bronze and a lighter one to highlight the center of my face. Looks gorgeous, light and fresh, and stays on all day!

Jodie Avatar

Hello, do you or can you do a review on the tarte foundation in your picture’ I’m looking for a cruelty free foundation and wondering what this is like!

Keila D Avatar

I’m totally in love with the Ultimate Coverage foundation by BECCA cosmetics! I mix it with my Loreal Magic skin beautifier bb cream! Love the finish and how long they last!

Amalia Avatar

Nothing. In the hot Greek summer everything melts and end up on the chest! Even Laura Mercier’s secret camouflage consistency, turns out in an emollient formula. A moment ago, I finished my makeup, by wiping everything off.

Soleil Avatar

Same here in Manila. Summer seems to be all year round, have been using Estee Lauder Double Wear, MAC Waterproof foundation and Laura Mercier Secret Camouflage but a few minutes later my face is sweating already! I’ve tried so many different brands of setting powder but it doesn’t help.

Grlnxdor Avatar

L’Oréal True Match Lumi Cushion with Revlon Nearly Naked Pressed Powder. I’m sure their are better powders out their that I need to check out. The Lumi Cushion, though, is wonderful!

Elizabeth Avatar

It’s spendy, but I will never stop singing the praises of Benefit Hello Flawless! powder. It doubles as a setting powder and a powder foundation and has truly a flawless, supernaturally natural finish. Ulta has a set called the Flawless Four with minis of that, the liquid foundation, a primer and a concealer for $24, it’s a really good deal!

Mariella Avatar

IT Cosmetics CC Cream set with Rimmel Stay Matte pressed powder. I love that the CC cream is an “all in one product” (though in winter, I do use a moisturizer first) and that it contains a high level of sun protection.

Wednesday Avatar

Struggling for months… have been so displeased with stash including most of my liquid and cream foundations.

A bit of a break for me colour wise. I am the darkest I have been in 10 years despite slathering on sunscreen, I’m right about 30 level (instead of my usual 20-25 level) and it has actually made my foundation colour choice easier this summer… sadly. Anti-aging skincare is fabulous, but renders your fresh skin wickedly sun susceptible. Kindofacatch22 for my lifestyle spending so much time outdoors.

So right now, I’m revisiting the past and I’ve gone back towards a mineral foundation. I thought my days of ‘powder’ foundations were over, but I am doing a few things differently and setting a very moistening base and strategically placing the mineral powder foundation and totally liking the results. I have a more than decent match and the mineral powder looks completely natural on me in daylight. So KJH, we were talking about this line before: Jane Iredale, I’m baack, and the pressed mineral foundation is once again my go to. The JI line covers a myriad of skins really well. The ‘Global’ line of powders particularly for those medium and darker. I’m 95% anglo (British and German), but 5% First Nation (Native Canadians prefer this terminology from what I understand..someone please correct me if I am in any way misinformed) and my skin reflects this. I am light olive skinned, burn if left uncovered, but tan after a lot of exposure while wearing sunscreen and then once I have a that base, hold that tan easily. I covered the transition to the darker JL colour with a bit of mixing with Tom Ford powder foundation in Fawn. Not sure powder will work this coming winter..but will deal with that then.

Happy 4th to everyone Stateside!

Kendra Avatar

Yes! I had a great anti-aging system of hlycolix and lactic acids and retinols and vitamin c for brightening, with a daily spf 50 sunscreen, but…I burned SO bad at the pool the other day, despite reapplying sunscreen every 80 minutes! I never used to burn. I’m sure it was my skincare. As a result, I’ve decided to drop my anti-aging skincare for the summer. I’ll pick it back up in the fall. For now it’s just moisture and sunscreen.

Anyways- my go-to base lately? Elf barely there foundation serum in medium with a tiny pump of white foundation mixed in to lighten it for a better shade. I like how light the coverage is. It just barely blurs my skin. (And I LOVE having the white foundation.)

Nancy T Avatar

Wendy, I can definitely relate to the skin darkening despite sunscreen dilemma! Although, I now reserve my retinol and Vite C, and other major anti-aging products for nighttime, it still happens. Oh well, nothing we can do. Back when I did used to lay out and tan, I would go DEEP coppery bronze!
As someone who’s father is a Tejano of mostly, if not fully, Native American blood, I much prefer the Canadian term First Nations over American Indian or Native American, because the origin of “America” comes from Americo Vespucci, an “explorer”.

Laura Avatar

Becca Evermatte Primer + Blackbird Cosmetics Magic Trick Powder in Green + Loreal True Match Powder or Revlon Colorstay Oily/Combo. Plus Nars RCC for spot concealing. It’s been a rough couple of weeks where my rosacea is concerned…ugh.

Tammy Avatar

I have three: Georgio Armani Luminous Silk liquid foundation in 5.75 topped with the Armani Luminous Silk Powder Compact in 5.5, MAC Studio Fix Fluid in NC 30 topped with Studio Fix powder compact in NC30, and Guerlain Lingerie De Peau BB topped with Physicians Formula Bronze Booster in Light to Medium. I wear these interchangeably throughout the week and they are all sooooo good!

Cat Avatar

Hello, Tammy! I was wondering how you you would compare the coverage of the Armani foundation to the one from Guerlain? Some people say it’s medium but can be built up to full without looking caking, others say it’s light to medium at best. I’ve been thinking about trying it but I prefer at least a medium coverage foundation. Thanks!

Tammy Avatar

Surprisingly enough, I think the Guerlain BB has more coverage than the Armani. But what beautiful coverage it is??

Armani can be built up but I prefer the lightest coverage so I apply it with a damp beauty blender to keep the coverage as light as possible. I did it with a foundation brush one time, and the coverage was light-medium.

Cat Avatar

Yeah, I don’t normally use a lot of foundation either. In fact, I’ve started using much less this past year – 1 pump Guerlain foundation, 1/2 pump KVD. KVD is crazy pigmented! I have to mix it with a primer and add in some pink tones before applying with a Beauty Blender. It’s not a perfect match, but it eliminates the need for concealer.

I use 2 pumps of MUFE when I use a sponge as it tends to be absorbed more than other foundations.

My perfect foundation would have the finish of Guerlain Lingerie de Peau Foundation and be the color of MUFE Liquid Lift #7. I’m dreamin’… 😉

Cat Avatar

I’ve read reviews for both, and people were saying they were surprised by the amount of coverage of the Guerlain BB. On the Armani reviews, people either loved it or were disappointed by the lack of coverage. I’m almost certain the Guerlain BB cream would be too yellow-based for me. On the other hand, it looks like Armani has a close match for me but not a lot of coverage. I might try Armani, apply it with a brush, and see what kind of coverage I can get. Medium coverage would work for me… so I’m hopeful!

Thanks so much for your thoughts on the two! My local Sephora doesn’t carry either line so I can’t swatch these, and it bothers me when I have to return an expensive item.

Tammy Avatar

I understand, Cat. I wanted the Armani foundation for three years but would not buy until I could get matched in person. I ended up having to go to Michigan Avenue in Chicago because that was the only place in Illinois where I could find an Armani counter (almost four hours from home). Thank goodness the beauty advisor was right on the money with my match.

Cat Avatar

I’m so glad you shared this with me! I’m going to be in Hollywood next month and there are numerous stores in that area which carry Armani. I don’t know why I didn’t think of that before! I hope my experience goes as well as yours did. Thanks again!

P.S. The last time I was in Chicago, the Neiman Marcus on N Michigan sold warm, delicious, chocolate chip cookies on the first floor. I’ve only met one other person who remembers them doing so. (It’s been almost thirty years since I was there!)

Shira Avatar

I’ve been wearing the Lancome stick foundation or MAC tinted moisturizer weekdays and for occasions or shoots, Dior Airflash!

Joyce Avatar

Maybelline Fit Me concealer under eyes and on spots with TruthGirl mineral foundation buffed in everywhere. Set with NYC Smooth Skin loose powder and touched up with Rimmel Stay Matte pressed powder

Nothing super interesting ;P

Linda Avatar

If like me, primers break you out, try FAB Beauty’s mattifying gel moisturizer (red packaging) as a base/moisturizer. This works “like” a base and makes makeup go on so nicely and last longer (at least for me). I love wearing this under Naked Skin or Marc Jacobs’ Genius Gel these days.

Anne Avatar

Mixing on my $6 clear acrylic Cosmocube (Sephora, # 1831429), Dr. Jart Beauty Balm (light/medium), Burberry Fresh Glow Luminous Fluid Base (#1) and The Body Shop Lightening Shade Adjustment Drops. I love the Cosmocube mixing palette. And you can’t beat the price!!! The small one is currently sold out.

Depends on the coverage I want. Barely there coverage (like today) I go with REN BB Cream set only in T-Zone with either the Tony Moly Compact or RCMA No Color Powder. If I want a bit more coverage I use either the Sunday Riley Breathable Primer or the UD Brightening Primer with either the Shiseido Synchro Skin or UD Naked Skin (3.25) with the same setting powders. If I want full matte coverage, I use the Sunday Riley Primer with the Dior Forever (Ivory) and the UD Loose Powder (Med Light).

Gillian Avatar

For me it’s been:

Dior Pore Minimizer primer

The new formulation of YSL Le Teint Touche Éclat in B10 or BR10 (depends on how red my skin is, plus I mix in a little white foundation regardless of which one I use)

Urban Decay Naked Skin Weightless Complete Coverage Concealer in Fair Neutral

Innisfree No-Sebum Mineral Pact. ?

Rachel R. Avatar

Most days, it’s been Olay Fresh Effects BB Cream in Fair to Light, and e.l.f. HD Powder. Cool days, it’s been e.l.f. Flawless Finish Foundation in Porcelain with their HD Powder. Super-hot days, Everyday Minerals Semi-Matte Base in Fair 0N with bareMinerals Mineral Veil in Translucent. (Spring and summer so far have had our temperatures bouncing between the low 60s to low 100s F, often within the same week.)

Dianne Avatar

L’oreal Infallible makeup setting spray as a primer, a mix of L’oreal Infallible and Revlon Nearly Naked foundations, bareMinerals Bareskin Complete Coverage Serum concealer, set with Nars Light Reflecting Pressed setting powder under the eyes and Laura Geller Balance and Brighten all over the face. Keeps my sometimes-oily face in check in all this heat and humidity!

txabela Avatar

A blend of bb cream ( for the spf) by holika holika and my trusty and humble maybelline better skin foundation. For bad undereye darkness days ( most days lately ) a “sprinkle” of kevin aucoin enhancer.

Liandral Avatar

Base: I mix these together as a base L’Oreal Magic Skin Beautifier Anti-redness BB Cream, MAC Strobe and Diorskin Nude BB Creme set with Laura Geller Balance and Brighten Foundation (pressed powder)

For heavy coverage I use (instead of Laura Geller) Dior Airflash set with YSL Radiance Enhancing Pressed Powder

Christa Avatar

The Tarte full cover foundation that comes in the squeeze tube mixed with either Marc Jacobs full coverage foundation or Estee Lauder Double Wear. Since I have super oily skin I also mix in a dab of Cover FX’s new oil control thing that is also packaged in their dropper bottle, the gel-like mint green colored formula! Wish I knew the correct names offhand! Set with RCMA no color powder and Laura Mercier Translucent mixed with Ben Nye Cameo and Banana powders and it lasts ALL DAY, with or without setting spray. Sounds like too much but GIRL i AM TOO MUCH lol. But really if you have seriously oily skin like I do I swear this has come to be my go-to routine for a reason. I’ve been in the makeup game for like ten-plus years now and have tried everything and this combo fits my life so well. Good luck!

Kecia Avatar

Lately, I’ve been wearing the NARS Velvet Matte Skin Tint with a few drops of the NARS Hot Sand Illuminator mixed in for added radiance. I set it with Bobbi Brown’s Yellow Orange Powder using a damp Real Techniques Complexion Sponge. My mother actually complimented my face (something she RARELY does), which let me know the combo was a hit!

LindaP Avatar

After skincare, summer or winter I always end with Kiehl’s Super Fluid UV Defense SPF 50+.

Until two days ago it was:
Tarte Timeless Smoothing Primer (love that stuff for blurring)
Georgio Armani Luminous Silk liquid foundation in 7

Then, I dunno, come summer and the Armani started feeling heavy and as if would break up by the end of the day. So I went on a hunt and the combo I’m testing is:
Tarte Timeless Smoothing Primer
Tarte BB Tinted Treatment 12-Hour Primer Broad Spectrum SPF 30 Sunscreen in Tan

I know the BB cream is technically a “primer,” but I think for summer, it’s enough foundation for me. We’ll see…

I have to say, the older I get…I never set the face with powder anymore. Maaaaybe concealer now and then. I don’t seem to need it, and it just seems to make me look ashy and older. Not sure if I’m the exception, but I have eliminated that step.

Kim Avatar

I’m with you! I typically don’t “set” my makeup anymore either, the older I’ve gotten (55 now!). Then again, I don’t think I ever truly used a LOT of powder anyway. Ever. I like the IT Cosmetics line of anti aging skincare and makeup. I especially like using just a LIGHT dusting of their Bye Bye Pores powder over my very light, skimpy makeup routine in the summer. Just enough to absorb any excess oil and blue the pores (in hot sweaty weather). Their anti aging primer is my HG primer, too! Nice and light but with wonderful anti aging qualities. Highly recommend!?

LindaP Avatar

Hi Kim!

I will check out the Bye Bye Pores powder for sure. I tried the IT Celebration Foundation AND the anti-aging concealer, and didn’t like either. I really wanted to. What do you use that you like so much?

For skin care… disclaimer… I have NO affiliation with the following. 🙂 I too am 55, and about 6 months ago I tried Kiehl’s for the first time. I’m back in business school, and we did a case study on it (high quality and standards–FYI). It piqued my interest. All my sons use it rabidly for shaving, and swear by it. I was running low on what I was using (Caudelie $$$$$$$), and decided to give it a try.

I will say, that for me, it’s changed everything. People comment on my skin — and that never happened before, ever. My skin has never looked better, and I’m not just saying that. I wouldn’t have believed it if I hadn’t had the experience. I went to the Kiehl’s store, did was the knowledgeable consultant recommended, and I’ve not looked back. I share this FWIW. It’s a war to keep it going, every day, and women sharing helps the battle. 🙂

Lately I’ve been layering products TooFaced HangoveRx, then Beccas Backlight priming filter and then my Skin79 BB Cream. I use MACs prolongwear concealer under my eyes & set just the under eyes with Makeup Forevers HD powder. Despite it sounding like a lot, it looks very natural (with coverage) on the skin. (I have mostly dry skin)

Diana Puckett Avatar

I don’t go for full on coverage, I tend to stick to BB or CC cream like loreal bb cream or IT Cc cream, paired with ELF translucent powder…..yes…..ELF, lol.

Teresa Avatar

I use Dr. Denese SPF 30 Day cream mixed with COver FX Custom Drops G70 because then I get my SPF and my make up in one step.

Naomi Avatar

been loving mixing the becca backlight primer in with my loreal pro matte foundation! awesome staying power but very natural looking when applied with a damp beauty blender sprayed with MAC fix+! also been loving the covergirl matte bb cream, and the it cosmetics CC cream set with revlon nearly naked powder

Eriu Avatar

Too Faced Hangover primer, then my HG MAC Pro Longwear Nourishing Waterproof foundation, set with ELF undereye setting powder (under eyes, obv) and ELF HD powder in shimmer, all applied with Beauty Blender and finish with Urban Decay All Nighter setting spray. Long lasting yet glowing even in the Florida summer weather (aka Hell’s Armpit).

Brenda Lee Avatar

I’m using Smasbox Pore Minimizing primer, at the t zone, YSL forever light creator CC in Rose all over and then applying Josie Maran Vibrancy foundation. Set with setting spray.

Genevieve Avatar

As it is winter here, I am using the Australian QV daily moisturiser with SPF 30, the Nude by Nature Primer and the Covergirl Luminous Foundation in their lightest shade. So far it has worked out quite well. I use the Mary Lou highlighter on top. Love it.

ShirlJ Avatar

I LOVE the responses to this question! I’m getting so many ideas!

I use a layered sunscreen (Bioré Aqua Rich Watery Essence 50+ SPF, then La Roche Posay Anthelios XL SPF 60 mixed with a couple of drops of Physicians Formula Argan oil)

After the sunscreen I apply Becca Backlight Priming Filter, sparingly.

Between he skin prep and foundation I apply eye makeup. That’s just so any mistakes or fallout don’t matter. No need to touch up.

Then I mix a little Smashbox Camera Ready BB SPF 35 & Tarte Amazonian Clay to get my perfect shade and medium coverage.

Then MAC Mineralized Skinfinish to set. Plus occasionally I spritz a little Fix+

All to look oh, so natural! Haha!

Rebekah Avatar

I’ve been rotating..Estee Lauder EE Cream under Tom Ford Traceless Stick, or Tom Ford Illuminating primer under Hourglass Illusion Tinted Moisturizer 😀

Mary Avatar

I’m absolutely loving Guerlain’s reformulated “Parure Gold Radience Rejuvenating Effects ” foundation . For some reason the older formula didn’t work for me but I’m loving this one .

Debbie Avatar

Clinique Superbalanced Makeup in Creme Chamois with Milani The Multitasker face powder. Sometimes I just apply the face powder with my Elf Foundation brush alone. It gives me just enough coverage.

Dee Avatar

I’ve just been using a Marcelle moisturizer with spf and Nars all day luminous weightless foundation. The coverage is medium/sheer and gives a subtle glow. I love it.

Elizabeth Avatar

CeraVe facial sunscreen (leaves a white cast and is super matte… surprisingly, a PERFECT base for makeup since the white cast needs to be covered up and it’s totally non-greasy!) and then Becca’s backlight primer. Then I mix Smashbox BB Cream in light with Smashbox BB Water in Fair (really, I should have gotten both in the shade Fair/Light) and set it with Benefit Hello Flawless! powder for extra coverage on my hyperpigmentation and to mattify the very dewy finishes of the liquid products. Aaaaand because I live in Texas, finish it off with either Dermablend setting powder or UD All-Nighter spray. It sounds like a lot, but really it’s a pretty fast routine to just slap on and go, using either my fingers or the Real Techniques buffing brush.

Cat Avatar

After doing some self-tanning, I am finally able to use the Lingerie De Peau foundation without mixing it with other products to lighten it and add more pink tones to create something I can work with. Although I absolutely love the performance, feel, and wear of this foundation, I will not be repurchasing. Maybe, one day, Guerlain will expand their line to accommodate more skin tones. 🙁 I’ve been using Cinema Secrets Colorless and/or Laura Mercier Translucent loose setting powders.

Janeen Avatar

Hahaha, I use the exact same combo as you, Christine 🙂 Love the tarte Rainforest of the Sea foundation, also use their concealer. Top it off with laura mercier translucent powder. I also use Estee lauder double wear foundation and L’Oreal infallible matte foundation, yay for oily oily oily oily skin. I just love how tarte gives you good coverage but still looks natural, definitely recommend.

Kitty Avatar

I have pretty clear skin with just some areas of discoloration (redness from mild rosacea, some blue veins from aging, dark circles under eyes), so I use several concealers on problem areas instead of overall foundation. I’ve found that using concealers and then setting with LM translucent powder works best for me.

Bonnie Avatar

I just ran out of Armani Luminous Silk (sad face 🙁 ). I’ve been reverting back to my Maybelline Better Skin Superstay, which does tend to rub off, but is one of the few lines that has a color for me. I set it with my favorite powder, Revlon Nearly Naked, put on with a brush.

Nikki J. Avatar

My go-to foundation is MUFE Face & Body. It gives great, natural coverage and is long-lasting. If I want to be flawless, I set this foundation lightly with Sephora Microsmooth Powder Foundation and mist myself with MUFE Mist & Fix.

Kim Avatar

Primer = IT Cosmetics No. 50 anti aging primer (typically my HG primer all 4 seasons!) OR Napoleon Perdis auto pilot pre-foundation skin primer (they’re both about equal in my book). In the summer, I love using a light powder foundation (like Laura Geller baked balance n brighten in fair). I typically switch to a heavier foundation in the fall/winter months (IT Cosmetics CC+ in Light). I’ve been wanting to try two more foundations but am waiting for fall/winter: Lancome Teinte Idole and Dior Airflash (oh, and Georgio Armani, too!). A light dusting of IT Cosmetics Bye Bye Pores finishing powder in the summer months (if needed) and I’m good to go!?

Quick layer Bare Minerals Original Foundation in Medium, Original Bisque Concealer where needed (almost everywhere ;)). Well Rested primarily on eyelids, Foundation and blending all with Buki brush then Original Mineral Veil! Lately, I’ve been trying samples of Complexion Rescue as base to the whole thing. Haven’t found my correct shade but I love the way it feels and what it does. Planning to use it regularly.

Elizabeth Avatar

I have been using Urban Decay One and Done with Urban Decay De-Slick powder. It’s been unusually dry here in Michigan, and only a few days of humidity, so it’s been working great. I usually use Urban Decay or Hard Candy foundation as well as their BB and CC creams with Hard Candy Welcome Matte. I always use Urban Decay or Too Faced primers, and I don’t have to touch up and my makeup doesn’t melt like it used to. I also have used Urban Decay’s Pore Perfecting Complexion Primer Potion and like that quite well too. I am trying to use up all the things I have “collected”, and finish some things off. I have so much, I really need to use up, and it’s nice to see what will hold up the best in the humidity and heat. I am quite pleased that they all have a good spf protection factor too. Save me a little time while applying my my makeup, and I like the fact that I am protecting my skin at the same time.

Emilie Avatar

I’ve been combining Jane Iredale Glow Time BB Cream with Kat Von D’s Lock-It Foundation! I love how natural the BB cream looks on the skin and KVD’s staying power, and the two colors I have balance to a perfect match. I set it with Rimmel powder combined with NYX loose translucent powder (the Rimmel eliminates the white cast I get from the NYX). Seems kind of complicated but I get it done pretty quickly, lol!

Tracy Avatar

I’m participating in my first Five by Fall and for this I’ve chosen both my Perricone MD No Foundation Foundation Serum and my Tarte Smooth Operator Pressed Powder. It’s a nice light combo for summer that has really good sun protection that stays put all day.
