What product did you buy because you had to have it at the time but don't use often?
Maybe all those limited edition MAC makeup totes and bags from years ago, though I didn’t purchase and expect to use them…

80% of my collection?
No, on a serious note, the most recent I can remember is the Jouer Skinny Dip palette – I forget about it even though I really like it and it’s not that difficult to incorporate it into a daily routine.
I was going to say pretty much the same thing….most of my collection!!!
Agree! Although I’ve made a conscious effort to declutter and stick to a low/no buy for awhile now.
Same.
Love your answer….and would have to agree.
Eyeshadow palettes: Urban Decay Born to Run; Smashbox Vlada Petal Metal; and several ColourPop palettes.
Cheek products: MAC Star-Dipped Face Compact and ABH Moonchild Glow Kit
Lips: MAC Oh Sweetie Lip Glosses (2); Pat McGrath Lipsticks (3); NARS Velvet Lip Glide (2 sets); and a bunch of MAC lipsticks that have either been returned in a B2M or will be going B2M.
I’m sure there’s a lot more that I’m forgetting.
I found the Smashbox palettes I bought mostly went unused or I regretted purchasing. Same with Colourpop – sure it’s a great price, but I could have put that palette money towards a more expensive lipstick I know I would have loved.
As for MAC, I might be a lone duck, but I despise MAC products and their customer service as a whole. I refuse to purchase from them after treatment from them at a flagship store.
Same experience with MAC products and services, good to know I’m not alone.
I had a massive gift card to spend, my husband bought it. The folks working at the MAC store said ‘oh honey, we can’t make THAT better (circles face) without you getting surgery first’, and they walked off and told me not to touch the makeup while running and fawning over this pre-teen with long blonde hair.
I wrote a message to MAC corporate who guaranteed me exemplar service next time I went into the store just to name my date and time. I walked in and the manager said ‘oh, you…your the one who got my employees in trouble….I ain’t helping you, spend your gift card and leave’.
MAC corporate did refund me the cost of the gift card at least after the second time. Never heard what happened to the store manager.
Jaclyn Hill Becca palette. I never bought Champagne Pop so I thought it’d be good to have in a palette with other shades. The packaging is very nice with a great mirror but I actually don’t care for the pink blush nor the gold highlighter so it just hangs around my makeup table.
KathleenLights ColourPop Dream Street palette. I really like her so I wanted to support her and the quality is lovely but not really shades I use regularly.
I love that photo of Mellan!
I’d have to say that products I’ve bought because I had to have them but don’t use them often consist mostly of those I don’t use RIGHT NOW; I tend to discard or give away ones I’ve gotten in the past that I don’t anticipate using at all. For those that I don’t use RIGHT NOW, this would include some collectibles such as rare books (which are just enjoyed occasionally) and all the back-up stuff I got because I expected the product to be discontinued (and it was discontinued and I still plan to use the item once I use up the current one).
The Fenty Diamond Veil How Many Carats highlighter. It’s absolutely beautiful and I use it for special occasions, but REALLY, how many special occasions can there be in one’s life? ?
Those are some hairy legs there, Christine. No judgement tho… ??????
Clinique Cool Down Cheek Pop because it was cool toned but I hate shimmer, glow, satin, anything that isn’t matte on my face. I have oily skin and I NEED matte face products. I never use it because it isn’t matte and it’s such a shame because the shades are perfect for me. I’m hopeful that someday they’ll come out with a matte version.
How about a dusting of translucent (or skin-toned) powder to take down the shine? Might make it workable….
First of all, Hi Mellan!!! I’ve missed that sweet face! <3
And yeah, LE makeup bags & totes were my weakness too at one time. I used to scour eBay for MAC makeup bags because I loved all the artwork and designs. They were so impractical, though! There was maybe one that was big enough to hold the 3-5 products I traveled with; and over time my love of the designs got overshadowed by the impracticality of the bags themselves, so one day I donated what I could and trashed the rest. I realized I didn’t want to be “that guy” who hoarded a bunch of stuff he could never use.
Many things come to mind!
1.) UD Naked Smoky and Naked 1 palettes.
2.) UD Vice LTD palette
3.) Probably an entire HALF of my lipsticks!
Probably the Urban Decay Beached palette. I rarely use it, don’t like the packaging (the “hinge” on the short end), have dupes for the shades I like best but when I found out it was available at a Shoppers not too far from me (initially it looked like it wouldn’t be available in Canada at all), I had to dash out to get it.
Nancy – you can send that UD Naked Smokey and original Naked palette to me – I absolutely love both of them.
I felt I had to own palettes from Pat McGrath and Natasha Denona because people who seemed better at makeup than I am owned them. I bought PMG Mothership II and the ND Coral palette and only reached for them out of guilt. They went to Project Beauty Share and maybe I have learned a lesson from it.
I forgot to add Modern Renaissance, which I bought several years after its release because again, everyone else seemed to own it so I thought I should as well.
I went completely out of my way to pick up the Melt Cosmetics Muerte & Vida palettes in-store, at the end of November, but I haven’t even so much as searched either of them… I finally pulled the trigger on ABH Modern Renaissance about a year ago, and it still hasn’t even been opened; it’s not that it isn’t a great palette, or I don’t like the shades, but because I already had the WnW “dupe”, and just tend to reach for that, or the MAC Flameboyant palette…
I was wondering if there is any products that you had or needed before the beauty store close because of the craziness of the virus i work in the beauty field and I know makeup isn’t a necessity right now but continuing to do the normal and talk about make up makes me feel a little better
There’s a few in my stash:
Tarantino’s Emerald palette
Lancome’s Sparkling Intoxication
Guerlain’s Les Verts (in my ‘green phase”
Natio’s Golden neutrals palette
to name a few….
Smashbox Cali Contour Palette. The shades didn’t work on my skin tone at all!
Smashbox Matte Exposure Eye Palette. Still sitting in my dresser barely used. I like the cool side of the palette and bring it out occasionally, but use my similar Bobbi Brown shades way more.
Urban Decay Vice Lipstick in Maniac. Swiped once on my lips and ended up giving away.
Charlotte Tilbury Lipcheat and lipstick in Pillow Talk. Despite the claims that Pillow talk looks great on everyone, it makes me look washed out and sick. In fact very few Charlotte Tilbury lipsticks look good on me. Just not for my skin tone.
Every single bronzer, highlighter, and contour powder that I own. I bought so many thinking I would use them and never did. I am currently trying to make a concerted effort to use them so I don’t end up throwing them away without even dipping a brush into them.
All those orangey-warm toned eyeshadow palettes I had to have with the craze from the past couple of years. UD Naked Fire, TF Peach etc. They honesty look awful on me. UD Born to Run, looked amazing in the palette, I can’t create cohesive looks with it. BH Cosmetics Opalescent palette – the shadows are so pretty in the palette but they all look the same on my eyes. ViseArt Rose Edit – they should have called it Copper Edit instead. Same problem as the orange palettes, looked awful. YSL All Hours foundation – way too drying for my skin. Last but not least, the Tati Palette. I’m banking on the hope that it’s part of a set because it’s pretty boring as a standalone, I never reach for it. A fifth of the palette is glitters which I refuse to use on my eyes. I could have bought 3-4 good Colourpop palettes or a custom palette that I would get a lot of use out of for that price. For the moment I’m holding back on selling it to see if she comes out with a good companion palette… tbd… Also Tati’s Blendiful face puff. I used it for a couple of weeks then went back to my brushes and Beauty Blender.
Wow, so much, but my first thought Marc Jacobs palettes: Steeletto and Coconut Fantasy. I’ve used the first once and the second maybe 3x.
Next: Anastasia BH Soft Glam and Carli Bybel love the look of both but rarely use.
DVa I brought the exact palettes you mentioned and never use them! My ABH Soft Glam is like new.
Foundation. I needed it for a special event, but I don’t wear it normally. I always feel bad purchasing it. I think for future, if I need foundation for an event, I’ll just pay to have my makeup done instead.
i actually have the MAC coral tote in the pic and have used it so much! it’s been my beach tote for years. but i would say UD Naked Heat palette.
theBalm Mary-Lou Manizer ??? Barely use highlighter on a daily-basis makeup, LOL…
Too Faced Born This Way The Natural Nudes Eye Palette. Nothing new or needed but I had to have it because I love nude and natural eye shadows. Wish I had passed because it’s just like every other nude palette I already have.
I didn’t get to purchase it but the entire Sailor Moon collection – I desperately had to have it even though I knew I would barely use it. It sold out before I could get it, which is great for my credit card.
I HAD to have the NARSissist Dual-Intensity Eyeshadow Palette, bacause I really love the shade Himalia, which I already owned as a single. Turns out i didn’t need the palette, I’ce barely used any of the shadows in there ><
A PMG Mothership palette, but I don’t regret the purchase (I waited and acquired it on sale 😉 )
