What is the first thing you do when you get a new piece of makeup?

What is the first thing you do when you get a new piece of makeup? Share!

As Arian predicted, I definitely don’t touch it, LOL! Everything gets put in a temporary home until I’m able to photograph it, then it is swatched, and finally tested. We’re all quite methodical about it over here, haha.

Thanks to Arian for today’s question! Got a question idea? Submit yours here.

I mainly buy eye shadow palettes so I swatch all the colors again on my hand. Then start creating all kinds of looks from wearable to theatrical.

Depends on the kind of makeup it is! Eyeshadow and eyeliner I open immediately and swatch, sometimes multiple times or alongside colors I think might be dupes or complimentary. Lipstick/gloss I open immediately and put on! Mascara goes into my drawer, and I’ll usually try it out the next time I put makeup on after I buy it.

i follow the same pattern as you! except i photograph first (i don’t want the product photos to look gross since i’ll be posting it on the blog :p), then i’ll swatch & test it right away. then again, i don’t quite have as large a collection as you :p

For eyeshadow: First, I swatch it over various primers to see which one works best with that specific formula. Then I write that down in a little notepad so I remember which primer to use. Then I start playing!

For foundation: I swatch it on my face, and then compare it to all of my other foundations. I’m a foundation junkie; I have about twenty! If I think the new foundation would better match my skin when mixed with another foundation, I try that. It’s so hard to find a match for my skintone, it’s so pink! 😀

For eyeliner: I swatch it on my hand, then try it out on my eye using various techniques to see which works best.

Blush: I just go right at it and put it on my face. 🙂

Lipstick: I also just put this straight on my lips, usually right from the tube (just so I get a feel for what it truly looks like.)

Everything else: I don’t really have a set method for other things that I don’t buy as often.

I take off all of my makeup and start over with a clean face to create a new look incorporating the new product with things I have in my collection already.

I’m going out of my mind trying to find a somewhat dupeable color for gems. i even contacted Guerlain but that went nowhere…….:(

I guess that’s why you are so incredibly diligent about posting your reviews and photos of the cool stuff quickly for us! Otherwise it sits there making faces at you….”play with me”….from its temporary cubby!

For some reason I smell the product. Even if it is powder or things I use regularly that I already know do not have a scent. I still smell them. I’m so weird huh? LOL

Sarah Avatar

I’m kind of obsessive about it, actually. I always get home and take the product out of its storefront packaging. If it’s a lipgloss, mascara, or anything else that is air-sensitive, I won’t open the actual product. Anything powder or lipsticks though usually I open on up (quality assurance? lol) BUT I refrain from swatching as I usually did that before I bought. I then put any and all packaging back in the bag, put the receipt in the bag, and keep everything for a few months.

Jaz Avatar

I take it home, open up my Inventory on Numbers/Excel, then I put in the info on this particular product such as type, LE or permanent, description (once swatched), date opened (especially good for lipsticks and glosses cos who can remember if it’s been two years yet?), etc.
Then it goes into my make up collection to be used!

Florence Avatar

I usually enter the products name, description, and date that I bought it into my excel spreadsheet to keep track of all my makeup collection. Then I swatch it, try it out, and take notes on ideas for looks.

I used to try everything out immediately. But then, I’ve started to write a blog, and now when I buy something new I ususally take pictures of the product untouched, and then take swatches or try it out 🙂

Anitacska Avatar

If I’m planning on posting about it on my blog, then I put it in my drawer until I can take photos. If not, then I might use it (mainly lip products) straight away if it matches the make up I’m already wearing, or save it until it does. Or just put it away untouched until I’m ready to wear it.

Katie Avatar

I’m just like you. I don’t touch it until it’s photographed. As it is, I have almost the entire Cham-Pale collection and everything is still sitting in its original packaging, waiting to be loved. I prefer looking at pictures of things that are brand new and not all used up so that’s why I’m so anal about it.

Trish Avatar

I keep it in its original box for about a day or so. Unless it’s Dazzleglass and in that case I immediately take it out, sniff it and put some on my lips. 😉

LU Avatar

I come home and swatch eyeshadow on my arm (for lipstick and blush I just go straight for my face) next to similar colors that might be dupes and complimentary colors that can be used in a look. I never throw out the packaging right away, and in many cases keep it in the packaging forever.

Ani_BEE Avatar

I swatch everything before putting it to use, unless it’s a gloss. Since I don’t live near any of my favorite makeup sellers (Sephore/MAC) I order online and some times a shade just won’t work on my skin tone. I miss being close to MAC store since going in would talk me out of buying things most times. lol

regina Avatar

I hate it but when I buy something I am scared to use it because I have so much already open. Particularly lipglass and mascara. I know these are only good for so long so I hate using something new until I finish something else because I already have so much open. Makes me kinda sad that I have so much that I cant enjoy it all.

Jasmin Avatar

I usually try it out, like how it works on my skin, to see the finish etc.

But it can also happen that I don’t touch it for days because I’m not sure HOW to use it. It was like that when I got my first blushcreme by MAC.;-)

Kat Avatar

If it’s lipcolour, it gets put on! If it’s blush or eye makeup, I usually just swatch it, ooh and aah over it, and then put it away for the next time I do my makeup. The only exception is mascara; I only have one going at a time usually, so those get put away till my current one needs to be trashed.

Hannah Avatar

stick my finger in it,
marvel at its beauty,
then slap it on
even green eyeshadow, at the end of the day after i’ve taken my makeup off i stick my finger in it and wipe it on one eye, then on the other i’ll do a proper look with brushes 😉

Ann Avatar

If it’s a lipstick/gloss I try it on. If it’s an eyeshadow, I put my clean finger in it to swatch it on my skin to see if the color will work on me. If it doesn’t swatch right I quickly return it.

LorraineER Avatar

I either play with it, or take pictures and then play with it, lol! I usually swatch things like eyeshadow alone and over primer and sometimes with different liners. Lipstick or gloss I try on.

Tiffany S Avatar

I’m a bit crazy, I take pics of my haul then stare at what I bought for a little while, then I put everything away while I plan how I’m going use it all!

jamie @ publicservicebeauty.com Avatar

there’s a shelf on my closet for my whole makeup collection. for things that i won’t use everyday, i usually swatch, test and play the day i get it. but about 50% of my makeup purchases are for everyday use, so i just swatch it the first time i use it. this is the reason why my “product review” blogs are always delayed… LOL.

Marcela Avatar

i get home, take it out of the box, admire the scent/texture/look of it, and then play with it by swatching it on my hand/arm and trying different color combos. it always feels like a new toy! that’s how i am with my ChamPale purchases right now =)

Emily Avatar

I learn from the best!!!! I have the wheely makeup tray like Christine. 1 drawer is dedicated to products unused…. I then reach for at least 1 next time I really have the time to play….. Thankyou Christine!!!

Gina Taylor Avatar

The first thing I do is enter the product into my excel spread sheet, name of product, if it’s an eyeshadow, lipstick or lipglass, and then I start playing with it, to see what products I already have will go along with it.

Niki Avatar

Wash my hands, open it, go to my vanity area and try the product on my hand, then I log it into to my spreadsheet with the date of purchase and when I am introducing it into my collection yes, I am organizational nut for I track my makeup so I can get rid of it in a timely fashion.

Anna Avatar

Open right away to swatch again and again (as if it would be a different color from the store)…literally, in the car on the way home.

TheMiaomi Avatar

as hard as i try not to touch it untill the nx morning, i usually cant help myself from playing with it within the 30min after purchase. lip products dont even make 5min. sigh

yasmine Avatar

I take everything out of the boxes and have fun organizing my entire collection to include my new products and then I put them away and don’t use then until I create a look where I need them lol. But I have so much fun

saana Avatar

i usually bought eye shadows n after came them home just hide them in my secret box coz i dont want them to be spoil by sis 😛 n let her use when i checked them …:P

Vanessa S Avatar
