What do you think of movie-themed makeup?
What do you think of movie-themed makeup? (e.g. Twilight, Alice in Wonderland) Cheesy? Adorable?
.
I think if I was in love with the movie/theme, I might like it. Otherwise, it’s really just about the quality!
Are you going to review the UD Alice in Wonderland palette Christine? I’m on the fence about it! Your review/thoughts would be helpful as I always try and take your advice.
Yes!
Adorable. I think it’s fun. Movies can be very inspiring.
I loved xsparkage’s superhero themed series on Youtube, and her Alice in Wonderland looks. I like movie themed makeup if its obvious what the connection is. 🙂
But as far as like actual movie makeup products, Im not too fussed on them. Especially if it’s just generic like the Twilight palettes, or a brand’s pre-existing shadows repackaged with different names *cough* Urban Decay *cough*
Love it 🙂
Love it. Im going to buy two of the Alice in Wonderland sets when they come out just because its such a beautiful and unique palette. Kandee on YouTube did a mini-review on it, hopefully the idea of ‘movie makeup’ kicks off.
I love them. They’re a lot of fun to watch. The real costume-y tutorial looks aren’t wearable unless its Halloween but great to watch because they transform into a real and different character (Youtube’s got a couple Navis from Avatar, lol!).
The interpretive ones are good too. It’s interesting how different makeup gurus would interpret a character in a film or book. Like honestly, they’re are so many Twilight/vampire tutorials yet they look so different from each other!
Just about quality. If they’re my favourite movies/themes and the makeup doesnt live up to my expectation -> it’s worse.
It really depends on the theme/movie. So far, I haven’t been impressed with the themed makeup thats come out. I hate Twilight, so I don’t want to feed more money into that…well, moving on.
The Alice in Wonderland movie seems alright (I don’t have high expectations). But I’m really not impressed with the palette. And I usually love Urban Decay. But its a whole lotta neutrals and thats really not me. Plus I’ve got dupes for every shadow in that palette (literally EVERY shadow). It’s really just…boring.
I agree, it depends on the movie. If the movie was the artistic type and the makeup had the colors and quality to match, then yeah. For example, Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland seems like such a visual masterpiece that makeup themed to go along with it seems like a good tie-in to the movie. Twilight, however, is just a vampire movie and that just seems cheesy and like the company’s just cashing in on the vampire craze.
Are you going to be reviewing the Alice in Wonderland Box of Shadows? I love your reviews they always seem so honest.
I like it! But only the inspired ones and not the whole copy of the look. I think it’s cute to see how everyone gets inspired and create a whole different look out of it.
Well I never paid much attention to make up in movies before last year really.
Actually the only make up I bought was the stuff they used on Kristen Stewart (E/s, Lipstick) in Twilight. And to be honest I bought it because I thought that make up would work on me, and I was looking for a nice natural look. I mean I do love the movie and book series, but I didn’t get the products because I wanted to look like Bella or whatever.
I find myself copying looks of actresses I like. I have a downright obsession with styling my make up and hair after Rose Mcgowan. She has a similar eye shape that I do, similar complexion, and hair color…So I figure most of her looks would lend itself well to mine. Plus I loved her on Charmed. I can’t say I like any of her other work lol. I just like her look and that she isn’t afraid to wear a bright lip. I love bright lips more than I love bright e/s colors.
if it’s done right, it’s awesome..if not it either just looks crappy or cheesy.
Twilight = Cheesy (The Volturi Collection… riiiight)
Alice in Wonderland = AMAZING, so many opportunities for amazing things to happen.
It’s dependent on the ‘theme’ and WHO is actually making the makeup, I think the quality has a lot to do with the result as well as the design of the products. If the company makes the product cheesy people are going to think it’s cheesy.
Totally agreed. My friend showed me that makeup and it was totally drug store quality in my opinion.
I think it really depends on three things, the movie, the cosmetic company putting it out & the product interpretation….case in point, TWILIGHT…love the story series, but wasn’t thrilled with the product interpretations. I mean, don’t get me wrong, DuWop’s a great company from what I hear, but the stories are about vampires and werewolves…how do you get “makeup” from that?!
The one collection that I am really excited about is UD’s Alice in Wonderland…knowing the quality of their collections (Book of Shadows, anyone?), I just know this one’s gonna be a killer too. Oh, and if the rumors turn out to be true, I would be SO EXCITED to see MAC do a Disney Villans collection….just the idea of what they could do in eyeshadows, has me in a tither…..
I liked it back when MAC did an Edie Sedgwick-themed collection once around the time that Factory Girl came out, or did MAC come out with it the year before the movie csme out?
Oh yeah. It was by MAC and it was called A Muse and the collection came out back in 2006 back when Chanel was showing all of these Edie Sedgwick-looking clothes.
I really love the Avatar make up haha maybe for Halloween.
I think its a great idea. Whatever inspires you is what you should go with.
I just ordered my urban decay alice in wonderland palette 🙂
I like movie-inspired makeup 🙂
If it’s done well, I love it!
The Twilight themed make up is stretching the franchise quite a bit. It feels like they’re trying to squeeze the most money out of the films. And there isn’t a lot of colour in the films to begin with! However I do like the Alice-themed products, of course provided they’re up to scratch.
If it’s crap quality, forget it. If it’s a movie I like, the packaging is fun and the quality of the makeup is great, I’m all for it! Alice in Wonderland, baby . . . bring it on! 😀
I just purchased the Alice in Wonderland Book of Shadows from Urban Decay. I happen to like Urban Decay products and I love Alice and Wonderland so I had to have this set. I wanted the shadows and the liners anyway so this was perfect!
I like it! cheezy it may be, but I like it.
omg its an amazing idea!!
if i would make a makeup theme of a movie i would choose Jane’s make up from New Moon

or Silk Spectre II from Watchmen

hmm… well like extreme theme makeup i think is OTT, but id love like the makeup from Clueless or Gossip Girl (ok i know that’s not a movie) or like Pretty In Pink…. that kind of stuff (sometimes makeup gurus on youtube do things like this)
It’s definitely about quality more than anything. I got swooped up into the hype of Twilight and I bought a bunch of the Volturi Twilight beauty products. Some were ok (eg. eye dusts), but there was quite a few that were not (eg super sheer lip gloss). The regular Twilight line was mostly okay when I swatched it in store, but no amazing colors or textures. There was one lip gloss that had so much chunky silver glitter, only pre-teens or teens could probably pull it off.
I Love it..i thinks its adorable and i usually love how the looks turn out.
I quite like it. I do agree – quality comes first but I think it’s pretty neat. That said, I cannot wait for UD’s Alice in Wonderland themed palette!
Well the makeup brands I wear don’t produce such themed makeup. The last time I checked NARS or Chanel didn’t create Disney themed collections.
It doesn’t appeal to me much, it feels a tad too young for me. “Fun” as a design definition is usually a euphemism for cheesy.
LOVE it. That’s the kind of makeup that truly shows inspiration and talent. You know artists who can pull off the execution of those extreme movie looks can do anything and everything in makeup.
And since you mentioned Alice in Wonderland, I’m so pumped! Tim Burton’s visions trump any movie makeup for me.
I would be more impressed with the movie-themed palettes if they consisted of the actual products used to give a character their look. Most of the palettes have seemed off in that you couldn’t recreate a character’s look from what was provided–just a homage sorta. Why not go all the way?
I don’t think much of it, to be honest. If the color/quality is good, then fine. Or maybe if they tied in a movie I was really excited about. Sherlock Holmes? But then that’s because of Robert Downey Jr., and not about the makeup.
Like others said, it really depends on the theme and the product quality. I don’t actually own any movie themed make up, but will probably get the UD palette partly for the design and partly because I love UD shadows (although I already have most of the shades featured in the palette, but it never hurst to get back ups eh?).
I love dramatic costumey themed makeup. As a challenge, and its fun to wear.
That said, I don’t know if i necessarily jump on the merchandising bandwagon of LE collections.
what is the ‘alice in wonderland palette’? what brand is it?
Urban Decay 🙂
I wish it would stop. I’m not eight years old, I don’t need product tie-ins with my movies.
I also don’t like the marketing saturation that comes with “movie events.” Let the movie speak for itself.
I don’t really like the Twilight themed makeup because Twilight wasn’t colorful at all and it’s a total disconnect. Alice in Wonderland, however, is incredibly colorful and creative and I love the Alice themed makeup! Unfortunately, I don’t think I’m going to be buying the Urban Decay palette because I already have most of the colors :'(.
im indifferent unless they came out with some unique and creative colors!
I adore my Rosalie palette from Luna Twilight!!!!! I’m a major Twilight fan, but these colors are just great! Amazing payoff!!!!! I think I may purchase Victoria next!!!! 🙂
