I have blueish grey eyes, and I think golds, teals and copper/bronze colours compliment my eyes the most.
Purples, pinks, reds, orange, yellow, silver, grey and black also work well, just not as neat as golds, coppers or teals. The worst colour is green. It really clashes with my eye colour and skin colour, so I can never do an all green makeup :C

Nikki Avatar

I have green eyes, however I don’t like the look of purple shadows. I prefer neutrals, gold, bronze, corals and some warmer pinks. I just recently got Hot Hot Hot from the Spring Forecast collection by MAC, and I am amazed at how great it looks with green eyes!! I’ve heard that yellows and reds also look great with green, but I haven’t tried them yet.

Amy Avatar

Waving at you – me too! I also have grey blue eyes and nothing – Nothing!- makes them more noticeable than wearing MAC Russian Red or Px Classic Red Creme.

I keep my eyes neutral on days I sport a red lip – Stila Topaz smudged into lids, a little MAC Soba in the crease, and Bobbi Brown Ivory in inner corners and under brows. Such an easy look!

For eyeshadow colors, I use everything but blue and silver. Coppers and golds, plums with brown based taupes, neutrals with yellow undertones and once in a while I wear pinks but they have to be just-right. 🙂 I found that greys are the hardest colors for me to work with.

Frances Avatar

Agree with you guys! I’ve moved to the UK after living in Asia and I really notice light blue eyes when the person is wearing red lipstick. It just makes it SO visible, really nice 🙂

Jamie Avatar

my eyes are dark brown…i wear lots of browns and golds and bronzes for a day look…

for going out/night…i tend to do alot of greens and purples.

Alicia Avatar

My eyes are mostly brown but more on the lighter side. If I wear colors with more of a red undertone to them, my eyes look green. I do that quite a bit. My favorite combo is Amber Lights, Sketch and Coppering! The warm tones in these colors really make my eyes pop!

Rosie Avatar

I have deep brown eyes and was recently been told greens make my eyes stand out (with like gold/green hues) and I like purples and blues as well, a lot. And peaches work well too.

Casey Avatar

I have hazel eyes and I think purples, golds and brighter greens look the best! However, I did a smokey grey look the other day using MACs “Print” shadow and it really made my eyes stand out.

Lindsay Avatar

I have hazel eyes and any browns, greys, purple or greens look the best and really bring out the green as long as a really dark liner is used. The least attractive colors on me are blues and pinks.

Leea Avatar

I have light blue eyes with a hint of grey, and I feel that gold/bronze or purples really make my eyes pop.
I also sometimes just do a neutral eye on top, but then have purple or something on my lower lash line + waterline. :]

Charlotte Avatar

I have really dark brown eyes so I feel like a bit of a blank canvas! I think I could pretty much wear any colour but my favourites are greens, blues, purples and bronzey neutrals.

Hilana Avatar

Ice blue eyes. I look best with some coppers, soft pinks, golds and lilacs. Going too dark and I just start looking weird, much as I love a sexy smoky eye on other people!
Oh… For some reason a mix of green and gold looks very good too.

Linda Avatar

My eyes are green/dark hazel, with a bit of yellow in the center, like a sunflower 🙂 I use every color family…when I want my eyes look like more green, the colors I prefer are greish greens, reds (as Heritage rouge), violets and purples. When I prefer my eyes look like more brown, I use browns, blues and petrols/peacocks (as Plumage & co.) 🙂

nicci Avatar

I have light brown eyes and I think wear most colors but colors that have pink mixed with some brown seem to work the best…the best example is Mythology from Mac. The colors from Chanel eyeshadow quad – Demure also has worked very well!

Rosanna Avatar

I have Dark Brown eyes.

I really love envy those with actual colour irises (mine basically appears black) but that means I can pretty much wear any colour I want.

I feel that Blue eyeshadows compliment my eyes (makes them a lighter brown) and skin the best. I’m always complimented when I wear blue! =D

lazeny Avatar

I have black eyes and pretty much any color compliments the color of my eyes. However, I have a medium skin w/ a strong yellow undertone and I find I can’t pull off any shade of pink, yellow and warm violets.

The best colors that I’ve used are blue-green shades and lilac shades.

Lyndsay Avatar

I have dark brown eyes and I love blues and purples. Green can be good too, and browns or golds for a more natural look. Brown eyes are very versatile!

Matte warm browns works best on me and complements my green with a hint of amber eyes. My favorite eyeshadow combinations are as follows:

MAC “Girl friendly” paint pot as base on the eyelid (yes pink base…my eyelids are ligt pink 🙂
MAC “All races” eyeshadow on the 1/3 of the eye closest to the inner part of the eye and thetearduct.
MAC Soft Brown in te crease aswell as on the rest of the eyelid.
MAC Brown down in the outer V.
MAC Shroon highliter on the browbone. Blend it nicely together.
Brushes: MAC 217, 224, 219, Coastal Scents tapered crease brush and CS Pink round fluffy crease brush.
Try it…I love it for a subtle but still sexy accenturated eye. The all races eyeshadow is a limited edition colour from the “All ages, all races, all sexes” collection and is a matte ligt mauve/pink sade. Looks really interesting together with browns. That little hint of colour makes it less boring.

Gretchen Avatar

Mine are blue, so definitely browns, coppers, bronzes, golds, peaches…greens and purples are nice too, but they don’t quite make my eyes stand out as the others.

Rita Avatar

My eyes are darkish grey with some rusty orange-brown in the middle. People think they are green, but they are not, and there’s no blue either. The colours I use are determined by my overall warmness: mainly warm colours like gold and other warm metals, warm greens, but also darker cold greens, browns, yellow-peach-orange-reddish colours, and even darker blue purples + (warm) neutrals. The ones that don’t suit me are blue pinks, blue, red purple and grey.

bangmaster Avatar

I’m a blue-eyed gal and I love champagne, taupe, bronze and copper. When I do color, I love dusty teals, gold greens and navy. I never wear black eyeliner–it’s always navy or brown.

@Bissa, I get lots of compliments on my eyes when I wear red lipstick, too!

happybadfish Avatar

Oh, I’m not good at this, but I have very pale skin and blue eyes. I wear taupes and browns alot. I love wearing purples. I also like a clean look with black liner.

The colors I never wear are green, pink, coral and gold.

kfm Avatar

My eyes are very light blue and I find that various tones of purple and plum work the best. Silver and blue shades are generally good as well. Strangely, the colours I struggle most with are neutrals. I can do darker earth tones, as long as they’re not too warm, but with light eyes and light skin, I find that softer neutrals make me look washed out.

Dee Avatar

does it sound stuck up if I say all colors look good with my eyes lol. They’re brown, so golds and greens work, but blues and purples do too. I’d say maybe pinks don’t work as well as others and black doesn’t really play up my eye color to any degree.

allison Avatar

My eyes are very dark brown, almost black. I used to wear browns and golds all of the time, but I have found that greens make my eyes pop. I also love the way purples and grays look on me.

Lorna Avatar

i have medium brown eyes. i love plummy browns like NARS ondine and MAC sable. also darker greys, blues and purple like NARS brousse/eurydice/brumes as well as MAC shadowy lady. they give my eyes more depth.

Erica Avatar

I have brown eyes but their not deep in color. I know purples are complimentary but i always reach for the neutrals, dark browns and sumptious olive. I’m once of those people who feel that they can’t wear purple due to the age thing. I know it doesn’t matter but I can’t get passed that feeling of what people may say. Stupid huh? By the way I’m 41. Anyone who is in my age range, please comment and help me change my thoughts!

Miriam Avatar

besides the eye color I think that the color of your skin is also very important when choosing the right shade of eyeshadows…for example I have brown eyes and very fair skin…so even though green is very nice for brown eyes, very fair skin doesn’t look that good in combination… only with colors like Humid and sometimes Juxt…but Swimming or Aquadisiac are very wrong 🙂

Amy Avatar

I totally agree. Skin undertones are really important in choosing eye color. This is why I have such a hard time with grey shadows – they clash with the rest of me.

Brenda Avatar

I absolutely second that. I have light to medium olive skin with green/hazel eyes (dark green with brown in the centre). A LOT of people recommend purples, however with my skintone I wind up looking bruised. It’s not pretty. It has to be the right overall combination for both eyes and skin.

Kell Avatar

My eyes are weird – super blue, like kind of turquoisey blue, with navy rings around the outside. They look best with taupes, medium browns, warm peachy champagnes.

53 Avatar

I have the asian dark brown eyes but with fairer shade of the warm skintone. As much as I don’t like it but purples end up looking v nice for my eyes.
I always go for light neutral colors but they sometimes end up looking chalky on my eyes.
Pinks end up looking purplish in the end on my eyes. This happens with pink lipsticks on my lips! haha.
So purple it is.

tremorviolet Avatar

I’m a redhead with blue/grey eyes and warm, orangey colors really make my eyes pop. Things like Coppering, Evening Aura, the Color 4 quad with that beautiful copper color from Spring Color Forecast. Purples, pinks, yellows (or golds), and greens are good good too; the only color I never wear are blues because they conflict.

AnaA Avatar

I have brown eyes, I love greens, browns and purples, but I don’t wear very vivid colours becase I have fair skin and they look riddiculous almost everytime.

Thincspot Avatar

My eyes are brown with slightly gold flecks. I find metallic colors (coppers, golds, pewters… etc.) really pick up on that and make them pop.

Evelyn Avatar

Mine are hazel and I pretty much wear all colors but I think greys make me look ill. I find that warm colors will make my eyes look more of a warm brown, other colors tease out the green more.

Kaide Avatar

I have blue/green eyes with strawberry blonde hair & fair skin. My eyes actually change depending on what I wear so that also plays into my makeup. But the colors that make mine pop are the neutral copper as well as green. Kelly green actually makes them REALLY pop. But I can wear pretty much any color.

Karla Avatar

My eyes are mostly green, but one of them is half brown/gold in color. I wear losts of soft gold and browns lately, but I like dark cool colors too. (Gray, Violet, Navy) It makes the green stand out. I’m told by my eye doc that my eyes are very unique. ?

Phyrra Avatar

My eyes are an odd blue-green shade. I tend to find blue-based teals, aqua, and charcoal-silvers look good with them. However, purples make them look very green.

I actually feel like I can wear most colors as long as I don’t do too much warm (i.e. when I wore Flip with Coppering it was too warm). I have to be very careful with oranges.

kareny Avatar

Brown eyes-It is strange that neither purple nor blue compliment my eyes. I found that light pink and dark greyish colors work best for me. For example: Benefit cream color Skinny Jeans and MAC la la.

abril Avatar

I have dark brown eyes and I’ve tried a lot of colours but I always go back to Browns like MAC’s Satin Taupe, Twinks, Mulch, I also like purples and grays and black… I think the only colour I don’t like is Blue, but I think blue doesn’t work for my because of my skin colour adn when I wear blues I add black or dark brown!

Chelsea Avatar

I’ve got blue eyes and I’d have to say browns, bronzey and neutral colors bring out my blues! And some greens since I’m a redhead! However, I feel black liner brings out the blue much more than brown liner!!!

Anitacska Avatar

I have very dark brown (almost black) eyes and I wear every colour in the rainbow, but do find that plums make my eyes look very tired, plus I don’t really like browns that much. But blues and greys/silver look really good on me, imo.

Ashley Avatar

i have brown eyes and i have found that neutral browns and golds work, as do purples and greens. i have to go easy on blues, and pinks i have to do lightly.

Anna Avatar

I have brown almost black looking eyes and fair skin, I like to wear greens and purples(muted cool colours of course) I don’t like the way dark browns look on me, it makes my eyes look very obvious and “there”

Jennifer D. Avatar

Green eyes and I ones of my best looks is a little All that Glitters and Patina one the lid then Cranberry on the upper lid and browbone blended with Soft Brown then using that matte burgundy color in the holiday ’08 warm eyes palette. So, basically cranberries and burgundy colors just really bring out the best in my eyes. Although, I wear them all:)

Violet Avatar

My eyes are this hard-to-define color. They’re light brown in the middle, and dark bluish-green on the outside, with a medium greenish-blue in the middle. I absolutely don’t know whether they’re green, blue, or hazel and they look different depending on what colors I wear with them — usually different shades emphasize different sub-colors.

But… the one shade that seems to brighten them overall is pink. Light to medium, cool-toned pinks like UD Hotpants and MAC Swish are really great!

Frances Avatar

My eyes are such a dark brown, they’re nearly black. I find all colours look alright. I can’t really wear purple because I’ve got pretty dark circles even with concealer, so I try to avoid dark purple tones. Lilac and pinks are pretty and gold and green are very complementary. I guess the colour that ‘pulls out’ the most brown in my eyes would be blues. Brown, black and grey are reasonably flattering but don’t really do anything special for my eye colour.

Sharon Avatar

My eyes are blue-gray (more gray than blue). I used to wear browns a lot in my teens because they made my eyes stand out. Probably the most flattering neutral on me is a cool taupe but I’ve also worn copper shimmer successfully… also like lilac and purple, light pink, and very dark blue (as crease colour only). I’m 50 so no heavy glitter for me, and my makeup tends to be sheer rather than colourful.

Eva Avatar

I have dark blue-grey eyes and I like wearing neutrals (both cool and warm tones, love taupes like French Grey and UD Mushroom) and purples (not too warm toned).
I coloured my hair red about two years ago and since then I noticed that certain greens look very nice with my eyes. Even oranges and peaches work in certain combos, but I have to be careful with these since tend to give me a sick look (I am very pale).
My eyes look the most intense with red e/s..but how often can you wear that unless it´s halloween?!

Brenda Avatar

for the true complementary colour, get a colour wheel and find the hue in opposite side of the wheel from your eye colour. Brown is a mix of all colours on the wheel so it may vary depending on the intensity and tones of brown. Play around with tones, shades and variants of the colour to find the ones that suit your skintone best.

Paj Avatar

I have bright blue eyes and for everyday, I like to wear golds and browns. Woodwinked and Handwritten are two of my favorites. I usually wear dark brown pencil eyeliner with dark brown or soft black mascara, depending on the time of day. I almost never wear black eyeliner – too harsh on me.

Holly Avatar

I’m pretty lucky. I have blue-green eyes so a lot of colours make my eyes pop.
I tend to favour purples and bronzes/golds. I stay away from yellow and orange.

Cait Avatar

I have light brownish/yellowish eyes and black works the best, but purple does too. Though mostly dark colors work the best when it comes to brown and purple eyeshadows. Golds are too light, and green looks horrible (unless mixed with a brown). Blues are iffy, umm grey works a bit and pinks are a huge NO. But ya I mostly use black eye liner with no eye shadows.
