Do you wear your makeup differently around family?

Do you wear your makeup differently around family? Does it depend on whether it’s immediate or extended relatives? In-laws?
If I really wanted to wear bright, bold blue eyeshadow, I would.  I usually gravitate towards earth tones and colors like green, plum, copper, golds just based on my personal tastes as who I am today, so in some ways, it’s more “conservative,” but it’s by choice. If there’s a family function like a wedding, graduation, etc. sometimes that can impact the style of makeup (heavy vs. more natural, smoky vs. more daytime-appropriate).  I will also make an effort so that I’m actually wearing a cohesive makeup look and not two different blushes, two different eyeshadow looks, etc. 😉  When I first started wearing eyeshadow, I would wear all sorts of crazy colors and combinations around family and extended family – nobody had an issue with it, though!

I tend to tailor my makeup for the environment/function, which consequently takes actual people into consideration. If I’m going to a concert with a family member, for example, I have no issue wearing a look appropriate for that, whereas if I’m going to dinner at a noce restaurant or church, my makeup will be geared toward that.

Sometimes, but none of my family would have much of an issue provided it’s occasion appropriate (and applying it doesn’t take hours). I wear the same styles around my immediate in-laws, but I’d tone it down a bit if we went out to meet someone I didn’t know well (which happens a bit because his family is big and mostly overseas).

Nope. My mother will occasionally comment that she doesn’t like a certain look on me, but she’s never stated I shouldn’t wear something. I tend to do my makeup geared more toward occasion than people – i.e. some events call for a quieter look, while others allow for fun.

Well I never again wear red lipstick for Chrismas… I paired a lipstick with a very pigmented red gloss and I had to hear about that all day. I thought my lips looked stunning, bright and full. But my family could not agree. I’m going for smokey eyes this year because somehow my parents have no troubles with that or my sisters goth eyeliner…

I was an extremely reserved young person, and now I’m more confident to wear the type of makeup I want to wear, so no. I do whatever makes me feel good about myself!

And to be honest, my family loves that. My mom always wanted me to be more outgoing and rebellious than I was, so I think she loves it!

I change it up a bit depending on the family that I am around. My hubby doesn’t like lipstick so, when I pucker up, I tend not to wear any. If I am around my sisters, I tend to wear the most expensive makeup and boast about it ( what can I say, sibling rivaling , yah know ). If I am around my parents, it doesn’t matter. They love me with or without makeup.

nope, my husband likes whatever I wear, and if I visit my parents they’re used to everything, including my raver’s teens, gothic university freshman year, hard-core night clubbing years, oh man, everything:) black lipstick, hot pink eyeshadow, neon greens, glowing in black light makeup, body and face art, ahhhh good old days:) so right now they think I’m pretty calm with makeup:)

Not really. I typically use a barely there, clean look and punch it up for special occasions. So when I’m with family for normal everyday banter or simple dinners, I look the same as I would at home or work without them. But I do tend to be less experimental at dinner parties or formal occasions when family is present.

Yes, I consciously / unconsciously make allowance for the family’s sensibilities. With my hubby, I wear bold lip colours – he prefers bright colour on the lips rather than the nude or gothic look. With my parents, I try to keep my look simple – so no dramatic smokey eyes. If i were to do that, my dad would probably think I’ve lost it!! 😉

My elder son (4years) is extremely observant – so he generally will comment on my eye makeup colour or lipstick – clearly stating whether he likes it or not!

I wear more neutral tones around my family… my dad looks at me in a pretty weird way even if I wear a brighter lipstick. It also depends on the occasion. I would definitely wear a more toned down make-up on a family event when there is someone else in the limelight, like a wedding, an anniversary or a christening. With that being said, I really rarely wear really bold colors, to be honest, so I don’t live thi through with a feeling that I’m not free or anything like that :P.

Oh, and I definitely don’t wear sticky lip products, non-touchproof bright lip products and glittery lip products around my fiancé when it’s kissing time, lol :P.

Not really, mainly because most of my family is also really into cosmetics. But I naturally gravitate toward more natural-looking makeup to begin with, so it’s more of a surprise to everyone if I have on more eye makeup.
