Wayne Goss The Air-Brush Review & Photos

Wayne Goss The Air-Brush

The Air-Brush

Wayne Goss The Air-Brush ($35.00) is a powder brush designed for sculpting, buffing, and baking. It is made out of blue squirrel hair, which are some of the softest natural hairs I’ve come across. It is a flatter, tapered cheek and face brush that’s small-to-medium in size; it’s not so small that it is only useful for precision work, as it can easily be used to apply products like blush and bronzer, but it is smaller than the average blush brush (though I find it more in line with the size of more Japanese-branded cheek brushes, like Chikuhodo Cheek/Highlighter and SUQQU Cheek). It’s 22mm in width, 35mm in length, and 14mm in thickness with a total length of 7.75 inches / 17 centimeters.

The brush felt silky-smooth against the skin; I couldn’t feel the individual bristles moving across the skin at all. It had moderate density and a fair amount of flexibility, so it can absolutely be used to buff in a powder product or to lightly sweep it on, which made it a more versatile brush overall. Personally, I liked it best for applying cheek products like highlighters, blushes, and bronzers, or else lightly patting loose setting powder under the eye (the softer hairs help minimize disturbing any concealer underneath the eye); it is a smaller version of Hakuhodo G5545, which is a brush I use regularly for applying cheek colors as it lays down color well as well as blends out powders nicely. The way the bristles taper really helps to diffuse color more gradually across the skin, giving a more blended result without a lot of effort. It can be used to contour as the narrower edge can be held underneath the cheek bone, and then the tapered edge can be used to blend out the contour. I still find an angled contour brush (which is more traditional) is more suitable for me to get a more gradual contour that really sits well underneath my cheek bone.

I haven’t had mine for long, since it just released, but I haven’t had any issues with my other Wayne Goss brushes with respect to things one would determine with prolonged use, like abnormal shedding, ferrule loosening, and so forth. Based on past performance and the fact that this is limited edition, I am comfortable giving this review sooner rather than later!

I ordered this on Friday and I can’t wait to get it. I’ve always had a problem with my powder brushes moving the concealer underneath (and since concealer is probably the most essential part of my base makeup at this point in my life I thought it’d be worth it!). I also got the Wayne Goss 14 and 3 brushes and I’m super excited. It’s my first foray into higher-end brushes too!

Oh yay, you are going to LOVE these!!! These were my first high-end brushes too (other than like a few It Cosmetics or MAC). I got them more than a year ago and the Goss brushes are sooooo fantastic. You are going to die when you take these out of the package, they really are beautiful, ultra soft, great shapes, and although delicate they hold up really well. I wash mine pretty often and they never lose shape, shed, or smell weird. I hope you love them as much as I love mine! I just ordered the Air-Brush today to add to my collection and can’t wait to get it. I have the face set, eye set, and that limited edition anniversary set. I really want to try the Smith brushes though next.

If you want brushes that will apply product without disturbing what lies beneath, then you’ll be thrilled with blue squirrel brushes. They feel so soft and delicate gliding across the face. I have several blue squirrel brushes by Hakuhodo, Suuqu, and Chikuhodo and was stunned when I saw the price of this new one by WG. What a great incentive to try a squirrel brush! As for his #14, it is one of my favorite brushes for applying more heavily pigmented blushers, bronzers, and highlighters. Anything a fan brush does, the #14 does better. It’s the proverbial easy-does-it brush 🙂

Kat Avatar

That’s why I got the #14! I’ve heard it’s great for applying too-pigmented products and I’m quite fair and tend to buy a lot of medium-toned products that are too dark for me.

Can’t wait til it gets here. The price is unreal for blue squirrel, and blue squirrels are pretty rare, and quite cute. At that price, if it goes perm, everybody can/will/ought to get one. I really like that you can use for multiple prods in one look, bec it does not require a full cleaning bet colors. Hope that’s true anyway. Fantasy son scores again. Now THIS gave me instant FOMO.

I have a petite face, so I love smaller brushes. I focus powder on the nose/chin, don’t like too much elsewhere, and $35 for squirrel hair? Wow, what a steal! Can you wash it?

Great, just caved and grabbed 2 last night, good thing because it’s already gone this morning. Wow, this brush sold out in 3 days!

Hi Christine, I was looking forward to your review as you have an extensive brush collection. I was most impressed at how the brush with pressure. Since this brush was advertised as a buffing brush that would give airbrushed results wherever the buffing technique was applied, how did you find it perform in this aspect?

I love Wayne Goss brushes and can’t wait to use mine.

Wwendy you were smart! I only bought one and I love it! I stocked up on a bunch of Sigma’s with the 30% off before I received mine and now I don’t know if I can justify another one yet (I bought the Eye Set and 5 other Goss ones). I hope this becomes a permanent addition.

Oh great, now you guys have done it! I use drugstore or IT brushes, but all this endless raving made me cave, and I ordered 2. I figure if this doesn’t live up to the hype, Beautylish has a great return policy, but something tells me I’m going to fall in love….

This is really tempting! My skin has gotten super sensitive lately and some of my natural fiber brushes have been irritating (specifically goat hair, it seems). I have plenty of synthetic brushes, but I really do prefer natural fiber for application. This brush sounds like it might work better for me since it is so soft!

I love this brush for applying my guerlain meteorites powders. It doesn’t pick up the little balls (so annoying when that happens) and applies beautifully without moving/disturbing the makeup underneath.

WARPAINTandUnicorns Avatar

Yeah ended up getting this one. But I won’t see it in the mail until the end of next week or the week after. 😉

I have crazy sensitive skin and even the softest goat hair brushes I’ve used still tickles me like nobodies business so I’m interested in selling/feel how the blue squirrel hair proforms on my skin.

That also said I find any blunt cut hair really irritating if they natural hair or synthetic. But I always find synthetic hairs the smoothest on my skin to ridiculous plush like I’m beeing pet by a rabbit. lol

I ordered this one and I am really happy you said it is good at laying powder down on top of concealer!!The fact that it is a multipurpose brush really sold me!

As much as I love WG brushes, I think I will pass on this one. I have MUFE #122, and WG #10 and #14 — so I think I’m covered. I’d love to see him bring out some undyed goat hair eye brushes like HK J5522 and J5523, for example.

Anne Avatar

It’s much softer (regardless of natural color). I avoid dyed goat — rather defeats the purpose, imo. The undyed goat is a better blender (MAC 217 type work) for the eye area than squirrel, while remaining almost as soft as squirrel. It also picks up more product than squirrel. Depending upon the look, I also like those brushes that combine goat and either squirrel or high quality synthetic. Bottom line: WG needs more goat eye brushes — undyed, of course. I’m sure he’s not listening to me. Lol.

Thanks Christine for the early review now I feel even better about having ordered it so soon. It will be my first Wayne Goss brush. I ordered mine several days ago and it should be arriving today.

Sherri Avatar

This brush was amazing as far as softness and it’s not my first Wayne Goss brush. It also did a great job airbrushing as it states. The only problem I had and I’ve had mine about a week, is I notice hairs coming off and sticking to my makeup……………..that made me sad.
