I agree. Mineral or non-mineral, as long as it has great COLOR PAYOFF I’m in! I’m a big fan of LimeCrimeMakeup.com for that reason, all of their stuff is super-pigmented.

I’ve tried Bare Minerals which was okay, and Laura Mercier which I LOVED and got compliments on my skin all the time. But then a few months into using the Laura Mercier Mineral Powder it appeared to give off a grayish cast on my skin. I also noticed this in pictures with my new Laura Mercier Mineral Powder.

Has this happened to anyone else, or am I just seeing things??

I don’t use that much of foundation because I loooooove a natural looking face (I just use a little bit of Le Blanc de Chanel to enlight my face and a little amount of loose powder to matify it) but I have a little rosacea on my nostrils since I am a kid. Concealers aren’t very good at hiding it and I don’t want to put a huge amount of it anyway because it wouldn’t look very natural. This redness is nothing awful but I don’t like it. I use Coastal Scents mineral foundation to cover it and it works very well with a very natural rendition. I need a few to hide the redness and it has the aspect of loose powder: perfect to me. I also use the same powder creamy foundation to cover the blemish under my eyes. It works very well without being too heavy on my skin! It’s very natural looking.

But I won’t use mineral foundation all over my face because I find it to be too covering for me. Just a question of preference, I suppose. As a concealer, I really adore: it’s far more comfortable to me than cream or liquid concealer. No dryness, no puffiness.

I guess you can say that mineral makeup was my “first” foundation. I had used foundation only once before, a Neutrogena one, just to try it out even though I probably didn’t need foundation. Then I started using foundation when that whole Bare Minerals craze came about and Sephora had just carried the line. It broke me out and made my skin itch and burn due to the bismuth oxychloride. I then used Everday Minerals, which in my opinion is great quality and also fairly priced! After using mineral foundation for a while though, I got tired of it because of the mess. I didn’t like having to open the jar and have foundation spilling from the sides. It was best that I apply foundation over the sink or a garbage bin. Then there’s also the fact that mineral foundation makes my skin produce more oil. Not sure why. Afterwards, I finally tried out liquid foundation and much to my surprise, it didn’t feel any heavier than the mineral foundation I was using. I was fooled by the claims made by some MMU companies that mineral foundation feels like you’re wearing nothing while all liquids feel like a mask. Not true, it depends on what liquid foundation you use and mineral makeup did not exactly feel like “nothing” either.

Overall though, I don’t think mineral makeup is bad at all. It’s very easy to blend and use. The coverage is fantastic. As far as me producing more oil… well, that’s just me. The main concern is if you’re willing to deal with the extra mess that goes along with (loose) mineral makeup. I’m not into dealing with that.

I like mineral foundation because it’s not as messy as the liquid one. true there’s messy spill, but I usually mix several shades and put it into a different container. Besides, when I’m having a few major zit, I feel mineral makeup is safe for my face. That said, there are still some non mineral foundation that i’d like to try.

I use mineral foundation. I like it a lot. Lumiere has a great line of finishes and colors. They also don’t have that itching problem!

Pavlina Avatar

I love it. Perfect when I am having a acne situation, very gentle. I love it. My liquid foundations are crying out, they just don’t get used anymore.

I’ve been using mineral foundation for a while now and just recently changed from the bare essentials to the philosophy for the same reason everybody listed here: the mess loose powder makes. The philosophy foundation is awesome because it comes in a little pot w/ a sponge that you then simply buff onto the skin. No mess! I like the coverage and it looks more natural than my BE foundation. I also try to go for the “not wearing any makeup” look and I feel the philosophy foundation gets pretty close to it. I do want to venture myself into the liquid foundation world and have been doing some research to see what brand would probably be a good match for me. I hear very good coments from MACs mineral line, but I have never used it.

I’m with you, it’s okay. I used Bare Minerals for a long while and I did like the coverage but I like my MUFE Matte Velvet now better – it stays on and on and on!

I never have liked loose shadow powders, so I was never really sold on mineral eyeshadows.

Emm Avatar

Personally I prefer the blushes + e/s’s to the foundation. I don’t like the mess generally, but EnKore on youtube has a video to make your own mixing medium which helps a lot!

I used to LOVE bare minerals but then I started noticeing I was getting horrible coverage- and my skin wasn’t getting any worse (it actually cleared up with Bare minerals).I don’t know if it was my foundation was old or the brush was crappy but now I hate it. I may go back to bare minerals in the summer when I want a lighter foundation- probably buy a new brush and foundation to see if that helps.

I prefer to use mineral foundation daily. It’s easy to apply and since my school likes to start extremely early, it’s just about the only thing that I use that helps me not look like a zombie. I’d like to try other mineral makeup besides foundation but I already have enough of that stuff so I’ll be waiting a while.

i’ve used BE for years and i haven’t had any reaction to it. i love it. but in feb, i bought the studio sculpt since it was still cold where i lived and it worked better against the weather. so now i’m alternating between both. now that warm weather is here, i’ll be using my minerals again.

Marlo Avatar

I could be wrong but I always felt like Mineral Makeup was better suited for people who really don’t need alot of makeup to begin with. I have tried it several times and I never looked put together enough for my liking. I wish it did work for me though as it is soooo much easier then messing around with liquids.

Taryn Avatar

I love it. It’s perfect for keeping oily skin under control.

I also love my Korean Blemish Balms, which are much better than tinted moisturizers.

Regular foundations have pretty much gone out the window for me.

LadyT Avatar

i’ve been using mineral foundation for years. i used it on my wedding day; i’m african american and didn’t have any “cast” or glow in my pictures. i’ve noticed that in order for the foundation to really work for my it has to be very very warm toned….otherwise it looks ridiculous.

i get good coverage with it but i dont have problem skin. barely any blemishes and hardly any marks that need covering up. i do get a little itchiness if i sweat, so i will be looking into other brands once i run out of my current supply. now that i’ve learned that there are other great quality brands out there….

So OVER IT! I used Bare Escentuals for about 6 or 7 years and got so tired of the huge mess every day, and it doesn’t stay on for more than a couple hours, and all those little pots – you practically need a U-Haul to store it all. Sold it all on eBay and switched to grown-up makeup. Mineral shmineral. Blah!

Tasha Avatar

I love mineral makeup! It’s actually what got me into makeup in the first place. I like how there’s so many different brands online with so many shades and finishes to choose from. And the best part for me is LOL receiving the packages. It always feels like opening presents. Trouble is I only like using them when I have the time (which is next to never because sleep usually trumps makeup) and touch ups using these products are real pain. So I try to look into really long wearing base mineral makeup and rely on regular makeup for pressed blush. 🙂

Lia Avatar

I like it, but only for everyday wear. I work crazy hours and it is super easy to put on. I found a good color match from Everyday Minerals and each container lasts a long time. I don’t need too much coverage, my skin is nice – but I can see how people would want more coverage. Also I find that the mineral foundations don’t turn orange on me, although I do need to use a finishing powder (MAC blot) in the summer to cut the oil. I get complements on my skin all the time!

I do have liquid foundation for special events or going out, but I can’t ever get it to look right if I don’t have enough time. When I worked in a office, I could take the time to bother with a more complex application. I like the mineral blushes, but I find that the eyeshadows don’t have enough payoff for me and get all over the place.

I’ve tried Jane Iredale & a sample of BE. The BE one was too pink for my skin tone & Jane Iredale’s colour matched well but overall I dislike the way powder foundation looks so I don’t use it. I’ve wanted to try BE’s eyeshadows, they seem really nice, the only downside is that they are loose & it’s not as practical as pressed shadows.

I will never go back to mineral makeup again. I used Bare Escentuals for 7 years, and while it’s very natural looking, it made my oily face look more oily throughout the day. I was constantly blotting my skin. Plus, after so many years, my skin finally had an allergic reaction to the Bismuth Oxychloride and totally broke out. It took my face nearly a year to recover, I had pimples and redness all over my cheeks and jawline, it was awful!

Plus mineral makeup is super messy. I was constantly getting powder all over my bathroom counter, sink, and floor. No no no, I will never do mineral makeup again.

Sarah Avatar

Bismuth Oxychloride is the devil! It made my skin soooo itchy. I use Beauty from the Earth foundation, which has like 3 ingdredients and doesn’t irritate my skin. However if you need a lot of coverage I find mineral makeup is not enough.

Taryn Avatar

What’s sad about mineral eye shadows is that the colors are so much more complex than anything you’ll find in a pressed version, but they are so messy to work with. I keep the mess to a minimum with my foundation and you don’t have to worry about fallout on your face with that, but the shadows go everywhere and you get streaks of color on your cheeks.

They’re nice when applied wet and less messy, but it just takes a lot more time to work with mineral shadows rather than pressed ones.

How come the loose shadows are always the ones that are duochrome? I can’t find many pressed ones that are.

Wow, I can’t believe all the people who related BE to all other mineral foundations!! There are SO MANY MMU e-tailers out there that make foundation A MILLION times better than BE. BE is awful.

I have extremely acne-prone sensitive skin, so the ONLY foundation I wear is mineral makeup, from a company called Silk Naturals. I have tried over 20 different e-tailer brand as well as BE and this is BY FAR the best formulation, coverage and color EVER. I have spent hundreds of dollars just buying samples of all different shades, but I only spent $5 at Silk Naturals to find the perfect shade because you actually mix it yourself. Christine, if you have a hard time matching your face to the rest of your body with pre-set foundation shades, I HIGHLY recommend Silk Naturals. It has beautiful coverage and lasts all day on me 🙂

(sorry, I know I sound like an advertisement but I have just spent the last 2 years trying to find the perfect foundation and I truly believe I’ve found it…so…just a little excited :D)

I don’t care for mineral makeup at all. It’s just some craze people have I think. I mean honestly I don’t notice that much of a difference between mineral makeup and regular stuff as far as ingredients go, if any mineral makeup may not contain as much as regular but still a lot of it is the same thing in other products that have been around for years. And I don’t care what they claim you should NEVER sleep in makeup (an occasional slip up happens though which is fine, we’ve all had those times!) all it will do is mess your skin up. Ok I am done ranting now lol.

Dawn Avatar

I’m indifferent about it. i like the mineralized blushes because they go on smoother it seems and I like some of the mineralized shadows but I haven’t REALLY tried the foundations.
But I need to try some because I think my Mac SFF is getting to be too heavy and my skin is finally clearing up.

I will read through these but can anyone give any recommendations, other than Bare Minerals?
Thanks!

Beda Avatar

I hear the word mineral and my skin begins to tremble. All I think about is Bismuth and getting a rash because of it. I know now there are some brands that don’t have bismuth, but I don’t care for them because it doesn’t look good on my dry cheeks (I have combo skin, very oily in the t-zone, cheeks are normal to dry). That’s one of the reasons now I’m rarely using any powder foundation because it doesn’t look good on me after a few hours, even though I moisturized my face and have tried different primers to see what works best. I have to be in a rush to use powder foundation, or to know that I will take it off in less than a 2hrs.

By now, I prefer liquid all the way.

Nicole Avatar

I hate mineral products. Ibought MACs MSF Natural and I broke out, so I had to give it away.
Maybe I give mineral products another chance but not right now.

apfelwinter Avatar

I can highly recommend Everydayminerals for anyone. The eye colors are amazing and I think they offers are unbeatable.

Jennifer Avatar

I have never been able to switch completely to minerals, but on a hot day I find myself picking it up. I just like the smooth look liquid gives, but mist and fix or fix+ really helps with the minerals.

Carmen Avatar

I love Jane Iredale’s loose mineral makeup! It’s my go-to foundation when I’m in more of a hurry. I get lots of compliments on my skin when I wear it. Since I’m 50+ and have some skin discoloration/spots, I really can’t go without foundation, which is a drag. Years of not wearing sunscreen every day…I’ve tried the Fyrinnae sample loose, and it was ok, nothing special. For liquid makeup, the MUA feedback on Rimmel Lasting Finish Mineral Enriched is a winner for me.
So it’s a question of preference and effect, since we all have different skin types.

KatoAto Avatar

Ditto Carmen. 🙂 I also use Jane Iredale’s loose mineral makeup. Mineral makeup isn’t for everyone – some people like a more “polished” finish – but I love it b/c it hides scars and discolorations oh-so well. It’s also extremely gentle on my skin.

If I’m going out for a crazy night, I’ll use MAC, but if it’s my every day routine, I’ll use Jane Iredale. I get a lot of compliments on my skin b/c of it (I’m my skin’s not even in that great of shape!)

I only use minerals for my foundation. I find that the eye colours are a struggle for me to work with at times, so I tend to stay away from that. But I do love my Buffd coesmetics foundation 🙂

Tiffany Avatar

I like mineral, because if it says its supposed to be better for my skin then it is my friend! (: But I also still love my non-mineral makeup.

Andrea Avatar

I really like mineral foundations. I have a great match in Everyday Minerals, and it’s definitely a staple for me! I also like mineral blushes, but not the eyeshadows.
