Temptalia Asks You - Do you like to receive beauty/makeup as a gift?

Do you like to receive beauty/makeup as a gift? Or do you prefer to buy for yourself?

.

I very rarely do — there are occasions where I’ve asked, but I’m 1) too impatient to wait and 2) don’t want my friends/family enabling me even more!

I love getting beauty products as a gift. I always have beauty items on my christmas and birthday wish-list. For this year it’s a TBS giftcard, a magnifying vanity mirror, L’Oreal moisturizer and a Bourjois e/s trio.

I do… if its someone who knows me enough to know what I need/want at the moment. I hate receiving something like face powder because 1) they don’t know my skin colour and so will likely buy something off, and 2) I already have enough powders so I don’t need more.

I would prefer getting something like a Sephora gift card so I can go buy it myself, or they get something from my wishlist.

But something that I hate receiving more than makeup is skincare products if its not on my list. I always wonder what those people have in mind when they’re buying skincare for me, LOL. And because they don’t know my skin well enough to buy something so “intimate” for my skin.

I feel like that was a rant, haha =P

I do..My mom sent me a great palette she picked up for $10 at walgreens. Being a makeup snot, I would have passed it by. But its really soft and pigmented, and loaded with colors!

Musingonbeauty Avatar

No but it’s mainly because friends and family have no idea of what I want and when that happens, I rarely get something I really wanted :-s
I rather get a gift card for a department store, so I can pick something I need when I need it.

I totally utilize Christmas + my birthday to stock up. I only like to receive specifically what I ask for, though. My mom picks me up stuff here and there all year, and then it’s pretty much just one big MAC bonanza at Christmas.

I totally agree with the impatience part, though. This year has been particularly hard, since I know I’m getting so much amazing stuff and I keep seeing looks on here that I want to try!

margot Avatar

As I am a poor student with no money (haha) I always ask for some MAC at Xmas. My mum and the MA in MAC know what I like so i’m never disappointed and I never regret getting it as a gift 🙂

Charlene Daalling Avatar

No because I am Extremely picky about the colors I wear and most people wouldnt know how to pick my colors. Or they give neutrals which I NEVER wear. I think gift card to Sephora or MAC would be better so you I can pick what I like.

Annigje Avatar

Yes I love it! Some people do no exactly what I do like, so their gifts are perfect. It’s also nice to receive something, you wouldn’t buy by yourself. Some products are so surprising.

Sixx Avatar

Of course! =) I’m always the easiest one to shop for ‘cos everyone knows they can just get me anything in the beauty or makeup category and i’d be a HAPPY camper!!

Jodi Avatar

Both! I’d love to receive beauty care or makeup items as a gift from someone who knows me and what I like or what would look good on me and purchase it for myself as well!

Brandi Avatar

No because I’ll get something that I would never buy for myself or the products are very cheap and not good. So I’d rather just ask for a gift card and buy my own makeup so I can get exactly what I want.

Cathy Avatar

I would love to get MAC and sephora giftacards and I ask for them all the time, but my friends and family tell me I have too much makeup so they dont ever get me giftcards or the makeup I am dying to get my hands on…sigghhh

Sass Avatar

No. I like makeup gift certificates though. I get to pick and choose what I want instead of doing returns. Plus, I’m picky with the type of makeup I use – no one will get it right for me.

Emm Avatar

Yes and No. I like receiving it because I like what other people think I should wear or what they think I would look good in since it’s usually different than what I would purchase. Or they buy me something I want and couldn’t afford. Though I hate receiving gifts sets of perfume’s/bath stuff because I am really picky when it comes to scents as well I usually never get around to use it all.

Dorie Avatar

Depends. If its my mom, brother, or general friends, then no since they, sadly, have no idea what types of colors of I go for, brands, or the fact that I’m more of a lips person then an eyemakeup girl. (I have far too many unused shadow palettes sitting ’round). However, I trust my closest group of friends to understand what I like, and they have yet to disappoint me with how well they know my taste =D

HT Avatar

No. I’d prefer to pick and pay for it myself. I don’t know what it is, I’d just rather do it myself. Gift cards for beauty stuff is ok, though. 🙂

Anitacska Avatar

For starters, nobody ever buys me any make up. But I probably wouldn’t like them to anyway, I’d much rather buy what I want and when I want it. 🙂 Some gift cards wouldn’t hurt though, but I don’t get many presents anyway (small family, mean in-laws). 🙁

Ashley K Avatar

Definately! My whole Christmas list for my relatives/friends is makeup. It’s my passion, so perfect gift. 😛 Especially for items I wouldn’t normally get.

Tattoo Girl Avatar

I prefer to put gift cards to MAC and Sephora on my list. That way I can buy what I want whenever I may want it. I can also save the cards for a rainy day or a new collection launch!

Andrea Avatar

I actually don’t like getting beauty products as gifts. I’m not sure why. I think part of what I like about makeup/beauty products is choosing them!! Weird I know 🙂

Gift cards on the other hand are just fine by me!!

Dini Avatar

I’m too picky – I probably wouldn’t be happy with cosmetics picked out by someone else! Choosing colors and products and trying different brushes myself is half the fun of the makeup process. And I’m not one to keep duplicate colors or products. As other people have said, gift cards for places like MAC and Sephora would be dreamy.

Ruth Avatar

Oh yes I do. My Christmas gifts are all bought and here’s what I’ll be opening Christmas morning:
2 Rouge Volupte lippies
2 Rouge Pur lippies
2 Chanel Hydrabase lippies
4 Guerlain Rouge G
1 Guerlain stick gloss
1 Estee Lauder lip gloss
Lancome juicy tubes gift set of 8
Lancome la laque fever gift set of 3
Tarte 15 gloss gift set
Clinique long last gloss Fireberry
3 Fame glosses from Sephora
Nars lipstick in Flamenco
Bare Escentuals gloss Betty
Bare Escentual gloss ruby
MUFE lipstick in soft Pink
Dior gloss in lime glace
Stila cranberry lip glaze
CK Sunset gloss
4 Napoleon Perdis lip lacquers
Givenchy rouge interdit lipstick in Sensual Rose

My family let me know all this in advance !!!!!!!!!!!!!

amy Avatar

It depends on what the beauty product is. Body lotion and perfumes I like getting, but for colour cosmetics I am a bit pickier. The person would have to know me pretty well to know which colours I like and what would work for me.

Sarah M Avatar

Yes and no. I prefer beauty gifts to anything else but at the same time people often buy me things I know I would never use. Whilst I really appreciate the gesture, I’m not very adventurous so am often scared to try new things.

carmen Avatar

I doooooooooo! usually i dont expect it unless i directly ask for it. but in the past my family has done a pretty good job on getting me makeup. thier trick is to take me to the mall when i have no cash and watch me go “oooo ahhhh” over things. then they get it for me.
hahahah they have no clue i know their trick!!

Jennifer Avatar

Well, I do like it when it happens – but it doesn’t always happen. If anyone is going to do it, it’s usually one of my friends (they usually buy me something nice smelling from Bath and Body Works, etc OR the ubiquitous Sephora/MAC gift card) or my husband, because I’ve told him flat out, “Get me this for Christmas” (this year he got me the Burberry Brit gift set, and for my b-day he got me a CHI flat iron). My boss usually gets me a gift card to Belk, which is a dept. store down here in the south that carries MAC and other high end beauty products, and that’s usually what I buy with it unless I’m in dire need of something else at the time. My parents usually buy me clothes, which is cool too 🙂 My in-laws either get me something so practical it is boring or some weird piece of art (yeah, they go to extremes). LOL

Nic Avatar

I’m happy to receive makeup as a gift if the person buying it knows what I want. My last boyfriend liked buying me makeup. He wouldn’t have known what to buy for me on his own, but he would sometimes offer to go with me to the store and then surprise me by paying for the stuff I picked out.

But to have someone else pick stuff out for me? No, I probably wouldn’t like that. The only person who could ever do that was my mom. There isn’t anyone else who know would know what to get me.

Catherine Avatar

I wish! I would positively love getting beauty items for Christmas or for my birthday but for some reason all of my friends end up getting me ridiculously cute-sy Sanrio stuffies – which, is fine, but not really something I appreciate as much as say, well, anything bath, body or beauty related. I’ve gotten categorized as “the cute one” in my group of friends and it’s really quite irritating sometimes. I even have a wishlist on my blog!
