Highlighter Palettes

While I can understand why a highlighter palette with similar tones may make more sense for a particular skin tone, I prefer ones that have a good variety as I think that’s a good way to get value out of the palette.

Retailer Exclusives

I generally don’t mind them, but I’m fortunate to live in the U.S. and have physical locations nearby for most retailers, so it isn’t an inconvenience for me personally.

I think it can take some trial and error to find the kind that works for your skin type/routine (plus, all your other products) so that it actually contributes to skin health.

Liquid Highlighters

I love mixing them in with base products, like primer, moisturizer, or foundation, for a more luminous finish to my base. I don’t usually wear them alone, even though they often work that way, as they can be too subtle for my taste. If they pack more punch on top of products, then I’ll definitely wear them alone, too! I do prefer the kind that dry down for the most part and don’t remain tacky or movable throughout the day.

Matte Eyeshadow

I love matte eyeshadows for the crease, above the crease, and brow bone, though I don’t tend to wear it on the lid (I like shimmer there). I wish matte eyesahdows were–on the whole–easier to blend out and to use. I feel like it’s a lot harder to get a great matte eyeshadow than it is a frosty/shimmery one.

I love the concept but am not so keen on the removal nor the wear (without a good adhesive primer/base!). The removal, though, keeps me from wearing it that often by choice.

Cream Highlighters

I don’t like when cream products stay tacky on the skin, so as long as it is a cream-based product that dries down for the most part, I’d totally use them. I like that they can add subtle luminosity and more of a glow than a shimmer.

Shimmer Eyeshadow

I love shimmer eyeshadow over all other finishes (but there is a place for all!) as they’re just easier to blend and apply! The only kind I don’t like are the type that are drier or dustier, so the shimmer can emphasize the texture of my lids.

Powder Highlighters

I’m a huge fan! There’s little not to love except for the ones that have less base color and lots of glitter/sparkle that doesn’t bind with the base powder. I don’t mind sparkly highlighters, but they still have to go on smoothly and not have a ton of travel!

I love how versatile they can be: as a base/primer, as a sheer wash, or as an intense eyeshadow. The problem with cream eyeshadow is that finding a formula that is easy to work with, has good pigmentation (or goes on evenly, if you want sheerer coverage), that is also long-wearing isn’t always easy!
