I like how involved Rihanna seems to be with the brand–she promotes it, but she also seems like she drives a lot of the way the brand is handled from the business side as well as creatively. I’m hoping they’ll improve the consistency and overall quality of their eyeshadows over time because that’s one product that’s left me so-so. (The Killawatt highlighters are better eyeshadows!)

Milani

Milani has always felt like an underrated drugstore brand, and I don’t know if that has had a lot to do with accessibility in stores or not, but now that they’re more readily available online, I feel like they’re getting the love they deserve. It’s one of the few drugstore brands that I feel I can rely on to put out decent to good powder-based products (eyeshadow, blush, etc.), which is an area that has improved significantly in the last couple of years in drugstore/mass brands but Milani’s been better in that area for years. I also like that their packaging seems a bit nicer for the price point–doesn’t feel super flimsy most of the time.

I really enjoy the majority of their eyeshadow singles, and I like a lot of the palettes they’ve released over the years, but they can be a bit hit or miss sometimes. I was not thrilled with how the brand/Norvina (daughter of Anastasia and president of the brand) reacted/what they said/how they handled the Subculture debacle, though. That incident really changed my perception of the brand (and not for the better). I love their lip glosses and powder highlighters, but I’m more lukewarm over the rest of their range.

They always feel late to the party (to a trend or a release) and too often been a disappointment, aka not worth the wait at all. I love their highlighters but little else gets regular use from me these days.

I think they’ve improved their packaging over the years–though they could go slimmer sometimes still!–and I feel like I’ve seen more color, too, but I’d love to see less mega-palettes during the holidays and more, well-curated sets and six to nine-pan palettes instead.

They have a lot of releases, and now that they’ve been around for a few years, some shades seem familiar or just marginally tweaked from a release before, which is inevitable with brands producing a lot of shades over time. I do love their overall business model and ability to respond quickly to trends and market demands with quality products (most of the time) at affordable prices.

Eyeshadow Primer

Sometimes, there is a bit of a trial and error process as not all primers work equally well with all eyeshadow formulas! But I have little to complain otherwise–they tend to do their job: improve the wear of my eye makeup, make application better and improve pigmentation of weaker eyeshadows.

Mattifying Primers

I have more normal skin that doesn’t get too oily, so I don’t reach for or use mattifying primers that often as a result!
