How often do you wash your brushes? I wash all my brushes 1x a week, usually on Sunday afternoon. I wash my concealer and cream eyeshadow brush every 1-3 days as needed.

What do you use to wash your brushes? Dr. Bronner’s Unscented Castile Soap. It’s gentle but it gets even my white eyeshadow brush totally white!

Do you spot-clean your brushes between colors? Kind of. I keep a “makeup towel” on my vanity and I gently wipe my eyeshadow and blush brushes off on it as needed and then I just throw it in the wash every week.

gisell Avatar

I spot clean my brushes when I came back from work in the night so that way there are dry for another use in the morning, I do wash the one’s from heavy makeup cream every day , and I wash them all at the end of the week.
I use a brush cleanser to spot clean and baby shampoo for deep cleaning.

abril Avatar

How often do you wash your brushes?
I wash them when I have used them like 3 or 4 times and I also use almost the same range of colours for everyday so I just whip them off on a tissue to remove left eyeshadow and be able to use them the next day.

What do you use to wash your brushes?
MAC Brush Cleanser.

Do you spot-clean your brushes between colors?
Yes, when I use very hard eyeshadow colours (Carbon, Typographic…) I do.

Emm Avatar

I wash my brushes, depending on use, once a month.
I wash them with Johnson’s baby shampoo. I spot clean with MAC Brush cleanser.
I usually spot clean, but it also depends on the color I used. Like for highlight colors I just wipe it on a tissue, but with blacks, browns or darker colors I spot clean after use.

Li Ming Avatar

How often do you wash your brushes?
Eye brushes – within 1-2 days of using it
Cheek/Face – probably every 2 weeks..? eeks.
What do you use to wash your brushes?
Liquid hand soap
Do you spot-clean your brushes between colors?
No. I just swipe on back of my hand to get rid most of the color deposits if I do use it for another color.

Baby Shampoo & Rubbing Alcohol to spot clean (cheapest and most sanitary thing I’ve found)

Yep!

1) I normally wash by brushes either every week or every 2 weeks. After that 2 week point, my eyeshadow brushes cause creasing from the oil that has collected into the brushes. For my face brushes though, I usually wash those a few times a week.

2) I just use some water and liquid hand soap. I actually use a new technique that I found on a website (I cannot for the life of me remember WHERE I found this though), where you put a few pumps of the soap into a small glass, fill it with a bit of water, and swirl your brushes in the water for a minute or so. It works the same (if not better) at cleansing my brushes than the way I used to wash them, which was by smooshing them in my palm with soap. It also uses up way less soap that way!

3) I don’t spot clean, but I should, because I always have colour on my brushes that I have to wipe away. I am scared to try one though, as I’ve read some reviews for various brands where people claimed that the product ruined their brushes. I really want one that dries within minutes though, so that if I need to use a brush more than once in a look with different colours, I can easily do so.

Mabeline Gidez Avatar

I wash my brushes about once a week.

I use Bare Escentuals “Well Cared For” Brush shampoo to clean my brushes.

If I don’t have time to wash my brushes in between cleanings once a week, then I do spot clean with Sephora Daily Brush cleaner spray which is an anti-bacterial spray.

I wash my brushes weekly using baby shampoo or hand soap. Sometimes, if my beautyblender or my foundation brush is tough to clean,I use Lancome Bi-Facil to remove the makeup build-up and then wash thoroughly with hand soap to remove all the oil. I have never spot cleaned in-between, although I do use a tissue to wipe a brush that I want to use with 2 different colors.

Vijaya Avatar

# How often do you wash your brushes?
I really, REALLY wash them after a week. I do spot cleanings every single day, though.

# What do you use to wash your brushes?
MAC Brush Cleanser. For the weekly cleanings I take it in the palm of my hand and really work it through the bristles, then rinse with water, but for spot cleanings, I wet a paper towel with it and swirl the brush around on it until it’s nice and clean.

# Do you spot clean your brushes between colors?
Nope. I sweep it on my hand to see if any color comes off on me. If it does, I do it a few more times until it doesn’t, then use it.

Florence Avatar

How often do you wash your brushes? Spot clean everyday, deep clean once a week or once every two weeks if I don’t use it too often during the week

I wash my brushes at least once a week, usually with a gentle face cleanser. I’ve never spot-cleaned between colors. I don’t like to use that many colors at once.

Christina Avatar

* How often do you wash your brushes?
The brushes I use on my face I try to wash after every use, but my eye brushes I wash once a week because I do have a bunch and I don’t wear eye makeup every day.

* What do you use to wash your brushes?
If I want my white brushes white again I’ll start with Dove soap, then use Sephora’s brush cleaner, although once it’s gone I’ll be trying a different one because it always leaves my brushes with the smell of the cleaner which I’m not a huge fan of.

* Do you spot-clean your brushes between colors?
Yep. I’ve been mostly using makeup wipes lately, but I feel like I’m wasting them, so I’m trying to use the Sephora spot cleaner more now because the whole bottle is just sitting there staring at me LOL

Amanda Avatar

I spot clean with MAC brush cleanser, every night before going to sleep so that I have clean brushes to use in the morning!

I deep clean my brushes about twice a month, or more if I get around to it, using baby shampoo!

Cherokee Avatar

I don’t wash my brushes often because I only wear makeup on the weekends. If I use concealer and my powder foundation during the week then I wash my brushes once a week with baby shampoo and olive oil. When I wear makeup on the weekends I spot clean with MAC brush cleaner. I also have Sephora brush cleaner but I like MAC’s better.

Anita Avatar

How often do you wash your brushes?
Every few days.
What do you use to wash your brushes?
Glycerin soap (I got a soap making kit and made too many ^_^) and conditioner.
Do you spot-clean your brushes between colors?
Only if the color is strong and I want to make sure it’s all gone. Otherwise I just wipe it off on a towel.

Mirna Avatar

How often do you wash your brushes?
I wash my brushed based on how much product is retained on it. About every month or month and a 1/2.

What do you use to wash your brushes?
I will start by using luke warm water and baby shampoo. Then use the brush cleanser from MAC, go back with baby shampoo, and one last cleanse with MAC brush cleaner.

Do you spot-clean your brushes between colors?
I do when I use a dark eyeshadow and then moving on to a lighter one, vice-versa.

What do you use to wash your brushes? baby shampoo 🙂

Do you spot-clean your brushes between colors? yes! i tend to use a quick dry brush spray and paper towels on my eyeshadow brushes since I don’t have many of them and have to use the same brushes for multiple colours

Daphnee Avatar

Not very often. Maybe once a week…if that.
The MAC brush cleanser with water (shampoo for the white bristle brushes)
No, I don’t spot clean. I should but I don’t want to ruin my brushes.

Rengirl Avatar

How often? – I deep clean every 2 weeks.

With what? – I spray them with watered-down tea tree oil and then lather them up with this face soap I got from Trader Joe’s – I wish I could remember what it was called… oatmeal, shea butter something… in any case, it gets dirt out fast without leaving a residue.

Spot clean? – Not really. I have several brushes and I just switch brushes between colors. But I do wipe everyone down (with a baby wipe) after every use so they are somewhat clean the next day.

Akia Avatar

Do you spot-clean your brushes between colors?

Cat Avatar

How often do you wash your brushes? Usually weekly — I generally stay at home & do nothing on Sunday, so that makes it a good day for brush cleaning.
What do you use to wash your brushes? All of my brushes are synthetic, so I don’t worry so much about using the universe’s gentlest shampoo. I use some diluted hand soap, or sometimes shampoo. Whatever’s handy.
Do you spot-clean your brushes between colors? Yes, I use Origins brush cleaner between colors on my eyeshadow and liner brushes.

AnaA Avatar

How often do you wash your brushes? It depends if I use them a lot and the products I use them for.
What do you use to wash your brushes? Sephora brush cleanser ou baby shampoo
Do you spot-clean your brushes between colors? Yes, all the time, even if I’m sure it’s not gonna do anything

Dusty Avatar

1) after every use
2) baby shampoo, sometimes a pro paintbrush soap (for lip brushes)
3) if i need to use the same brush twice and i’m out of clean ones, i will just swirl it on a dry towel until i get most of the color out.

Sixx Avatar

*I deep clean my brushes 1-2 times per month.
*I use baby shampoo.
*I spot clean my brushes between each use even if I’m using the same colors. I hate havin’ all that build-up on my brushes.

Thincspot Avatar

Every 1 1/2 weeks. I use Clinique spray brush cleaner (similar if not the same as MAC brush cleaner), then I shampoo with a mild all natural shampoo. I only do spot clean if I’ve used a very dark color that leaves too much residue.

Mariah Avatar

How often do you wash your brushes?
Not often enough. Maybe every 6 months? But then, I don’t use liquid products or if I use a paint pot I use fingers, so none of my brushes are wet/gunky.

What do you use to wash your brushes?
Johnson&Johnson Baby Shampoo!

Do you spot-clean your brushes between colors?
Oh yeah. I guess if you count that as cleaning, I clean every day. I brush them out until nothing comes out. You can’t have blue on your brush if you’re doing pink the next day!

Shannon Avatar

I use MAC Brush Cleanser. I quick-clean my 187 (if I have time lol) after I use it for foundation. I usually wash my eye brushes after I use a few colors, unless I’m using a pigement or a really dark color like Typographic, then I wash it after one color or use another brush for the rest of my look 🙂

Nathalie Avatar

My everyday makeup is pretty light so I use a daily brush cleaner from Sephora. On the weekends I use darker colors and wash my brushes with shampoo.

Eileen Avatar

I shampoo my brushes with Johnson’s Baby Shampoo once a week. During the week I just brush off excess shadow on a wash cloth which I keep for that purpose. The cloth gets washed every week or sometimes sooner.

I wash my brushes once a week using the Mac brush cleanser. Then once a month I gently run them under water without wetting the handle and clean them with baby shampoo. I know a lot of people don’t like the baby shampoo but it works just fine for me and my brushes look great. I don’t spot clean between colors cause I have so many brushes so they never really get that dirty and if they do I just grab a clean one. That’s when cheaper and SE brushes come in handy.

Holly Avatar

1. Once a month
2. MAC brush cleaner
3. Yes, almost always with the brushes used with mid to dark shades… not as often with the bruses used for highlighter/light colours.

What do you use to wash your brushes? Baby shampoo or Mac brush cleaner.

Do you spot-clean your brushes between colors? Not really because I have a lot of brushes (GOSH brushes are much cheaper than Mac and there’s often a 3 for 2 offer on them), so I get through the week without needing to clean them.

Great question!

Rosa Napoleon Avatar

I generally wash my brushes at least once a week sometimes if I am really busy I wash them once every two weeks. I like to use Philosophy Purity to wash my brushes or sometimes baby wash. I really don’t spot clean between colors. I just dust them off on tissue paper between colors.

Marjolijn Avatar

I try to clean my brushes every week 🙂
I clean them with a mild shampoo: Trichomania or Gentle Lentil from Lush. I find it very convenient because these shampoos are solid. I just wet the brush, swirl it aroun on the shampoo, swirl it on my (wet) hand to wash the brush and then rinse it completely under the tap.
I don’t spot clean between two colours because I usually use different brushes for different colours. If I do use the same brush twice, I just swirl it on my hand until the colour stops coming off 🙂

3. I *wipe* my brushes between colors, but I don’t do any real spot-cleaning.

Leenie Avatar

I clean my eyeshadow brushes every other day and my liquid foundation brush everyday, I do spot clean my bushes to get a true color pay off, and I use shampoo to clean my brushes.

Megan Avatar

I wash my brushes every night because the feeling of yesterday’s dirt on my clean face is just sickening! Hahaha. I typically put a little bit of baby oil on my brushes to break down all the make-up on them, then I ‘ll use baby shampoo to clean them. And yes, I do spot clean between colors with a damp paper towel! 🙂

Ashley Avatar

I clean my brushes with Sephora Daily Brush Cleaner every few days and once every 2 weeks I clean them really well with MAC brush cleaner. Both work really well, but my fav is the MAC cleaner.

I usually don’t spot-clean because I wear similar neutral looks during the week for work, so my brushes don’t have many colors on them.

Laura Avatar

I deep clean my brushes AT LEAST once a week if I am the only person they are used on. I ALWAYS deep clean after working on a client.

I use a mixture of MAC brush cleaner, baby shampoo, and clarifying shampoo to deep clean, making sure to rinse COMPLETELY and let them dry with a brush guard on them. (Takes longer to dry, but helps them maintain their shape better.)

I spot clean between colors and after every use. I find it awful gross for them to sit all day or night with funky makeup and who knows what else on them! Ewww! LOL!

Great survey! 🙂

How often do you wash your brushes?

What do you use to wash your brushes?

Do you spot-clean your brushes between colors?
– I just use a tissue paper to wipe off the residue

BeckBeck Avatar

How often varies by brush – powder product brushes get cleaned every 7-10 days, cream product (gel liner, cream shadow, foundation) end up getting washed after every use. I use Sephora’s brush cleaner – the 2-ounce bottle for six bucks has lasted me six months because you only need a small pump per brush. I don’t spot-clean per se, but I will brush off excess on a tissue if I’ve used a particularly dark or sparkly shade.

Samantha Avatar

I try to wash my brushes every 1-2 weeks.
I use shampoo and luke-warm water to wash my brushes.

Carol Avatar

Depends on the product. If I’ve used cream or liquid type products, I try to wash them the same day I’ve used them. If I’ve used a powder product, I usually just use an anti-bac wipe and wash them after a couple days.

Katie Avatar

1. If I use my brushes (I don’t always have time to do a full face of makeup) I try to wash them once a week. I will at least wash my foundation brush that often and because I use it everyday I wash it twice everytime I do wash it. (shampoo, rinse, shampoo, final rinse)
2. I’ve used baby shampoo in the past but recently my mom got a large sample of the bare minerals brush cleanser. It’s very similar to baby shampoo, I think it might just have some extra brush conditioners in it.
3. If I’m using dramatically different colors I will spot clean my brush either by wiping it on a clean cloth of (if it’s really dirty) putting makeup remover on a cloth and cleaning it with that.

Do you spot-clean your brushes between colors? Yes, just with a tissue and maybe some water

Camilla Avatar

1. I was my brushes every second week, though I aim at once a week.

2. What I use to wash them with depends. I begin with a shampoo without SLS (which is a harsh cleanser that I avoid to use on my hair, and so avoid to use on my brushes). I inspect my brushes. The ones that are clean I put a bit of conditioner on (without silicones since I use a shampoo without SLS silicones would cause buildup) and put to the side to let the conditioner do its work. The brushes that the shampoo didn’t clean properly I use my oil based cleanser on(removable with water, which is important). I rinse the conditioned brushes while I let the oil do its magic, then return to rinse the oiled brushes (which works to condition them too). If the brushes feel oily, I clean with shampoo one more time and condition afterwards. Sometimes, when my brushes still feels dirty after drying (you know that slight coarse feeling of bristles that used to be soft?), I wash with a clarifying shampoo with SLS and condition which usually does the trick.

3. I do a sort of spot cleaning between colours, in that I swipe the brush against a bit of paper or the back of my hand before dipping it into a new colour. If I have used widely different colours, I might spot clean with Mac’s Brush Cleanser. Though, I use mostly loose mineral colours so contamination of the colours is not really a problem since I shake a little bit out and then pour the rest in the wastepaperbasket (wasteful, I know, but since I have so many shadows I want to keep them usable for as long as possible and so keeping them uncontaminated is important).

Bahar Avatar

I clean them once every 1-2 weeks with shampoo and spot clean them 3-4 times a week.

Leea Avatar

1. I deep clean them every (about) 2 weeks, but depending on how much I use them.
My “daily brushes” (concealer brush, lid brush, crease brush) I try to spot clean everyday or every other day.

2. Mac Brush Cleanser or whatever liquid soap we have in our bath room haha! 🙂

3. Not between applying different colors in one day, unless I’m doing a special look or something, and that’s really rarely..

For spot cleanings I use Sephora Anti Bacterial Daily Brush Cleaner or 91% or 99% Isopropyl Alcohol

1. I used to do it weekly but with being sick all the time and school full time and work I’ve been getting around to deep cleaning about every other week. Although I saw this quick way of cleaning from TalkinMakeUp on Youtube that is super quick but I’m not sure I like how the brushes are handled.
2. I use baby shampoo for deep cleaning and MAC brush cleanser for everyday
3. Not exactly between colors I may just wipe it off on my towel but I spot clean everyday including blush/foundation/powder brushes.
