Sunscreen 101: Skinceuticals with Mexoryl SX

If you’ve been reading Temptalia for a little while, you’ll know that we are strong advocates of preventing aging by using sunscreen everyday and everywhere. And not every sunscreen is made equal. Make sure you get introduced to sunscreen and learning about what ingredients and things to look for in your ideal sunscreen. You can also check out our Sunscreen 101 series.

Skinceutical’s Active UV Defense Sunscreen Cream SPF 15 ($29.00) uses 3% Mexoryl SX as one of three active sunscreen ingredients, which is proven to have good protection against short UVA. It then has 2% Avobenzone, which protects against long-wave UVA. To protect you against the UVB spectrum, it contains 10% Octocrylene, which stabilizes the Avobenzone. (Yes, sunscreen is actually much more complicated than you thought!)  This sunscreen is meant for face, so you’ll want something else for your body (and with the size of the tube, you’ll probably realize it’s not meant for body), but I would recommend using it on your neck and decolletage area, too.

While it is only SPF 15, it is also water and sweat-resistant, comes in a fragrance-free formula, and it is lightweight. Ideally, you should apply sunscreen 15-20 minutes before you head out into the sun, and you should re-apply every two hours or more often, depending on your skin type.

Please keep discussion on-topic, and if you have general feedback, a product review request, an off-topic question, or need technical support, please contact us!

Please help us streamline the comments' section and be more efficient: double-check the post above for more basic information like pricing, availability, and so on to make sure your question wasn't answered already. Comments alerting us to typos or small errors in the post are appreciated (!) but will typically be removed after errors are fixed (unless a response is needed).

We appreciate enthusiasm for new releases but ask readers to please hold questions regarding if/when a review will be posted as we can't commit to or guarantee product reviews. We don't want to set expectations and then disappoint readers as even products that are swatched don't always end up being reviewed due to time constraints and changes in priorities! Thank you for understanding!

Have you check out La Roche-Posay’s Anthelios. It’s a very similar product at SPF 15 and they are launching a SPF 40 soon and it sells for 29.50 I used to only be able to buy this line of products through my derm but CVS and Longs carries it now.
