Spring Makeup: Barbie Pink & Purple (Valentine's Day Makeup... Maybe!)

Valentine’s Day Makeup: It’s the New Pink

Last night, I asked the late night Twitter crowd if I should do a colorful or natural look — I was originally thinking about doing something soft and natural, but colorful was the voice of the majority, so I ran with it. I thought about it, and I decided I should do some pinks, and then I started feeling like something Barbie might wear, you know, if she was obsessed with makeup and wore color up to her brows… 😉

Since it’s always fun try out different lips, I went with two extremes: hot fuchsia pink and cool-toned pink-purple. I think what you pair it with, lips-wise, is really something that’s about what you feel comfortable in and if it’s appropriate for the occasion. I’d totally wear the hot pink lips out at night — don’t care if it doesn’t follow makeup rules! To tone it down, go for something in-between — light enough so it doesn’t compete with the eyes, but not so light that it washes you out. My go-to for a look like this is Sweetie lipstick topped with Luminary lustreglass, but I wasn’t trying to be subtle with this look, so there ya go. Best part about makeup? It’s fun! Second best part? It washes off 🙂

I’m pretty sure I totally rocked this kind of look one Valentine’s Day, so let’s go with that.  I’m almost positive I did the ultra bright, ultra fuchsia, and totally unforgiving hot pink lip on a Valentine’s Day, at least.  You could totally put some awesome false lashes on for even more dramatic eye, too!

You will need the following…

For eyes, start by applying Soft Ochre paint pot as your eyeshadow base all over the lid with the 249. Put one or two drops of water-based mixing medium (or water) on your 239, and then apply Pink Opal pigment on the lid, going just above the crease. Using the 239, apply Seedy Pearl eyeshadow on the lower lid. Next, apply Stars ‘n Rockets eyeshadow on the outer third of the eyelid and lightly blend with crease. Darken the outer third of the lid with Passionate eyeshadow with the 239, gently brushing it into the lower crease. Next, define the crease by applying Fig. 1 eyeshadow with the 226. Lightly tap and brush Seedy Pearl eyeshadow directly above the crease to soften. To finish the eyeshadow look, sweep Seedy Pearl eyeshadow as a highlighter on the brow bone. Bring everything together by applying Lust Liner on the lower lash line and Penultimate eyeliner on the upper lash line, and then sweeping lashes with Exceptionnel mascara.

For cheeks, apply Benefit Sugarbomb to the apples of the cheeks and sweep upwards towards the temple with the 116 for a warmer cheek; try Illamasqua Kate for a cooler pink cheek.

For lips, apply Show Orchid lipstick first, and then layer Luminary lustreglass for a bolder lip look. For a paler lip look, try Saint Germain lipstick as a base, and then top with Luminary lustreglass.

I love this look on you, it’s fresh and innocent (especially the cheeks) and it looks fabulous with your black hair. I love the hot pink lips more than Saint Germain though, because the latter makes the look too ghostly and absent. Which one do you personaly prefer?

Wow. Both versions of this look are so beautiful! I love both of the lip combinations. I use Show Orchid lipstick and Luminary lustreglass all the time but have never thought to layer them. Needless to say that from this point forward I’ll be doing this a lot!!!

Love the eyes and the bright pink lips! Kinda wish I’d got Show Orchid when it came out a few months ago or is it actually permanent? I also need to get Fig. 1 eyeshadow!

!!! LOVE the eye and the hot pink lip. I did NOT see that coming… the lips are so bold! (I’m not big on the creamy light pink — they just always make me think of lactose for some strange reason, lol! — but the fuchsia looks amaaaazing on you.)

Love the look, Christine !! I’ll get these eyeshadows asap ! I love Snob, it is one of my fave MAC lippies but I got to say, I don’t like St Germain. I think it’s the most unflattering color on almost everybody !!! I love the look with the Show Orchid, actually it’s perhaps my fave MAC lipstick !!

I love both lip combos; however, I like the Show Orchid combo better. The St. Germain combo is nice, but Show Orchid warms up your complexion better and compliments the eyeshadow better. I think the strong lip and eye combo is pretty and doesn’t compete with each other.

OMG, I really love the eyeshadow, definitely one of my favorites. If I did the look on myself, I’d probably change the lips though, I don’t like how bright pink lips look on me. I’d probably do something like Sweet Thing lipstick with Icescape lipglass.

that’s sooo cute!!!!!!!!! i like the darker pink lipstick more than the other one though. can you do more valentine’s day tutorials please?

I LOVE THE LOOK!
the darker lips look better imo, but i dont like that penultimate eyeliner, usually your liner looks great in your pics, but it looks ‘craptastic’ in this one (no offence meant) were you trying it out for review or something?

That hot pink lip is absolutely gorgeous! I’m seriously tempted to go out and buy both Show Orchid and Luminary–and I rarely wear a hot pink on my lips, but it just looks so good on you 😀

I wonder if I could replicate the lips with Magnetique lip glass… I don’t have Show Orchid or Luminary, but I have tons of hot pink lipsticks and glosses so hopefully I can replicate it! I love this look so much ahh! 🙂 I have to wear it this week!

WOOOOOWWWWWW Christine! this look is gorgeous! you look so beautiful! Next time they promote show orchid i am going to have to buy it lol. Your looks inspire all my purchases…seriously!

Christine,
Most of us agree that the hot pink lip looks great on you. The second pic with the St. Germain and the blush is definitely not flattering on you, but I don’t think they would look good on many people anyway.

oops 🙂 sometimes I forget that the comment box is at the top now and I keep scrolling down 🙂 haha.

This is bombshell gorgeous on you! The eyeshadows are cute, playful, yet sexy. I love the hot pink lips with these eyes – they work really well together! I can’t wait to try this one day! 🙂 Thank you for sharing it with us 🙂

This is so pretty. I absolutely love the bolder lips. The pinks look really nice on your skin tone. I’ve been wearing super neutral eyes this week since I’m trying to get used to being up early again for work but I think this is inspiration enough to hurry up and get my sleep back on track so I can get up early enough to do more with my e/s :).

I was about to say you look like a very hot Barbie with the bright lip – but i see someone has already found that resemblance.
Love Show Orchid on you, and i much prefer it to St.Germain (which is beautiful, but suits far less people, i think). Very very sexy with your dark hair!

Stephanie Avatar

So pretty! All my fav colors, I must try this for V-day! St. Germain looks amazing on you Christine:) Thanks for the heads up on Luminary with Show Orchid! I have both of those and never tried them together! Must do it!

Celeste Avatar

it’s pwetttyyyy! tho i would suggest perhaps playing with eyeliner color to just ‘top off’ the barbie-ness of this makeup! i LOVE the bold lip..it’s amazing how change of lip color changes how a makeup ‘feels’. the pale lip brings out your cheek color a lot more, btw. love sugarbomb

Janine Avatar

I never thought of putting anything on top of my show orchid! I will try it!! 🙂

I have no idea how MACcosmetics.com sold me show orchid, it was listed amongst all the normal lipsticks…not until 2 months later did I realize it’s a PRO item =/ so I went back to the website to check and it was no longer listed as normal, lol.

I typically mix my saint germain with a little brighter color to keep me from looking ghostly :X
