Sneak Peek: Makeup Geek Foiled Eyeshadows Photos & Swatches (Summer 2015)

Makeup Geek Foiled Eyeshadow

Here’s a lil’ sneak peek of the ten new Makeup Geek Foiled Eyeshadows ($9.99 for 0.064 oz.) — which ones have caught your eye? If you’re unfamiliar with the formula, Foiled Eyeshadows are a “hybrid between a powder and a cream shadow” that’s supposed to have “intense pigmentation … in just one swipe.” The brand has changed the description of the formula slightly since the original release, such that if you have oilier lids, they recommend a primer for longevity as these have a higher oil content in them. According to the brand’s recent video (here) on the new shades, they mentioned trying to reformulate to improve longevity but this caused the product to crumble in the pan. I thought it was an interesting look into the behind-the-scenes nature of cosmetic formulations, and it’s good to see a brand that listens to their customers and offers some transparency in an industry that can be quite secretive.

Charmed is much more complex than it looks in the pan. Beautiful swatch. I like them all, but my faves out of this batch are Daydreamer, Masquerade, Fantasy, Pegasus and Charmed.

Same here. I’m not even sure what color it is. Is “green-tinged taupey champagne” a color? Whatever, I’m in love with that swatch!

Some of these swatch really nice. I have never used a MUG shadow. Do you think you will get a chance to review any of these Christine? Now that I have Z-palettes , I would likely order some if they perform well. I used t be pretty turned off by singles. But, your blog has shown me the light, lol!

I am glad though! You’re reviews have made my make up collection so much more enjoyable and useful! I really don’t know how to thank you enough. Are there awards for bloggers? If so, please let us know when we can vote. I mention your name and shop through your links and I click on them a lot just to see where things are selling. I am not sure if tat benefit’s your site or not? But, I honestly would have a melt down if Temptalia.com went away.

I am rethinking my comment and maybe that was a not smart question because it is a “Sneak Peak ” and I noticed thy are press samples. So, don’t waste your time unless you have an overall comment on MUG shadows/ blushes. I have read some reviews and it seemd most blushes are good and shadows are hit and miss.. I could be mistaken. I actually was tying to think of what to add t my Drugstre.com order because I have been wanting to get Milani’s “Delizio Pink” but do not want to pay $5.99 shopping on a $5.99 product..Bingo..Zpalette! I need one anyway!

You can read the reviews from the first ten! 🙂

I would say the biggest ding with the first go-round was that they did crease on me at 7-8 hours. They still scored pretty well overall, despite the creasing. Definitely very pigmented, very metallic. There were a couple of misses — Houdini and Caitlin Rose stick out in my mind (sad about the latter, as it is the charity eyeshadow).

Nicole Avatar

Ok..thanks for letting me know.I’ll just wait for your reviews. I’m overwhelmed as is with makeup at the moment ! I hope to see some good purples sometime soon, lol!

I already ordered these and I can’t wait to get them. MUG is quickly becoming my favorite brand. I love their shadows, blushes and their gel liners are the only ones I use now.

Ren Avatar

I’m actually not impressed with most of these. They are pretty but not intensely “foiled” looking. The lighter shades look like your average sparkly / metallic finish eyeshadow.

Malia Avatar

I ordered four of these, but I didn’t even look twice at charmed… I’m thinking that may have been a mistake! It looks really nice. I liked the first set a lot but I use in moderation, since they’re a bit more intense than what I usually wear.

Agh i’m so sad these are pretty (weirdly) because I have two of the earlier release and they crease SO badly on me! My lids are very oily and are quite hooded to be fair and even with normal shadows I have to usually layer a couple of bases to anything to stay, but these really only lasted a short time 🙁 I love Makeup geeks normal shadows and I really hope they do a couple of colours (like High Wire esp) in just a normal powder formula. I’m thinking of using the two I have as inner corner highlights or maybe try a tiny amount in the centre of the lid over powder, but I definitely can’t justify buying these when I know I can’t really wear them 🙁 Also love the work as always Christine! xx

I’ve generally tried most of the eye primers and most fall a bit short, I believe I tried Nars pro prime which lasted about 20 minutes ha! I read your other review about how the paint pots work well on their own with these so that’s definitely something I will be trying! 🙂 At least I didn’t buy 20 if they don’t work for me lol!

Put my order in yesterday!!! Can’t believe I wasn’t even aware these were so close to releasing! And so glad I ordered. I would have gotten the expansion kit if I had it in my budget since I got the full set first time around, so I’m a little sad about that. But since I haven’t used all the shades in my first ten I am so happy to have carefully selected this time. In my order is whimsical ( can’t wait to see how this performs as a highlighter!!!!), fantasy, charmed, pegusus (have been wanting this exact shade for spring… So excited) and high wire! I will be anticipating your review of the “re formulation” and can’t wait to try them on my drier lids!

I just purchased this collection, because I loved the first set of foiled shadows MUG came out with. The lighter shades will be beautiful for just taking your finger and dabbing it in the center of your lid after you apply your shadow to make your eyes just pop! It seems, however, that there are many makeup companies jumping on the “foiled bandwagon”. NYX did the same, and I have to admit, they are totally comparable to these. Urban Decay and Ardency Inn did as well, but more with the duo chrome. ColourPop also has amazing “foiled” colors and duo chromes. Addicted?? Yes I am.

charlotte Avatar

Interesting that they reformulated them. I thought I was the only one who found them beautiful but hard to apply.. had to layer, and layer, and layer. I had actually decided not to buy anymore after I found the NYX foiled which are much more pigmented/creamy. Looking forward to your review.

Jackie Avatar

well im glad i got the gold ones, charmed, and masquerade… but if pegasus is that light in color, i think i’m going to regret that one. i def liked the first collection because of how vibrant and colorful they were… this collection has too many light colors pshh!! i wanna see a dupe for MUFE’s turquoise blue or something

Christine Avatar

An A is an A is an A – they are the same overall quality if they have the same score 🙂 It will depend more on what you are looking for out of an eyeshadow formula, as they are both different – Makeup Geek Foiled Eyeshadows are about intense pigmentation and blendability but have issues with wear time (about 7 hours on average for me), while MAC Extra Dimension is supposed to have buildable coverage and can be used dry/wet (dry for sheer coverage, wet for fuller coverage) with a stated 6-hour wear time (which they live up to, but if you want longer wear, you’ll have to use a primer or use them wet, or both).
