I love dying my hair. Otherwise I’d have been 21 running around with grey hair! I love the variety too. I’m quite happy being a redhead now but it sucks how quickly red hair dyes fade. If they could find a way to remedy that life would be good!
same with me. I’m 27 and I retouch my roots every 3-4 weeks. I’ve had grey hair for most of my life, it sucks :'(
Have you thought about henna to achieve red hair? I used boxed and professional dyes to get red but it never lasted. Henna gives me the same red while being much healthier and more gentle on my scalp.
henna is very healthy and everything but normal hair dye (professional ones) won’t ever last anymore on your hair, because henna changes its structure and the chemical dyes (not like this one – made out of plants) won’t probably even come out right anymore or last…
good luck. take care!
Henna is magic for long lasting reds, and is virtually fade proof, which is awesome, since chemical-based red dyes fade so quickly and stain your towels like mad. Henna gives you such a glossy, born-with-it red but, like Joy says, be prepared to stay committed to the red, or to having the henna professionally stripped when you’re ready for a new colour.
I used henna for a couple of years after having chemically overprocessed hair that needed a major break, and loved the results!
I am joining in the praise for henna! I have been a redhead for three years now, at first I got it coloured at the salon (expensive, but lasted okay), then I coloured it myself with chemical dye and colours(faded rather quickly and my hair got pretty damaged ) and for about four months now I am using henna and I love it!!! It doesn´t fade, my hair looks healthier and since henna is like an added layer over the hair shaft, I am actually getting more volume!
Janet, the first time I actually colored my hair I used henna, but I HATED the redness of grey hair (having hair like granny’s isn’t cute when you’re 15. Red hair cased from henna is usually associated with old women, or men).
It is very common in our traditions to use henna for medical and beauty uses. It smoothes the hair and works as a good treatment. but again, I really hate how it comes out on grey hair.
I have heared around of henna packages with natural dyes, so if someone doesn’t like the natural color of henna she can choose from the available dyes. I want to try this out but I need to figure out the place first.
I agree, I would love to dye my hair red but every time I’ve been a red head it always fades after a week or two =(
Sally Beauty sells a red color depositing shampoo that’s great for all shades of red heads. It refreshes color and helps it last a little longer.
I use semi-permanent hair dye that’s close to my original hair colour (just slightly more red) because I have some greys on top now, and I find it very easy to use and convenient. I use to have blonde highlights and it would cost me around £100 ($150) to have them done at the hairdressers, now it costs me about £4 ($6). 🙂
I really think that people who dye their hair platinum blonde (unless they have super super pale skin) just look wrong. It always looks fake and then when bronzer is added it looks cheap. I’m fine with everything else under the sun but I feel like they’re trying to do a ‘natural’ colour and just clashing with it!
Platinum blonde isn’t really a “natural” colour. Especially on anyone past the age of 3. People aren’t always going for a natural look. That’s just what I’ve experienced being a hairstylist.
I have never dyed my hair, as I think it ruins it and that your natural hair looks best anyway. Well, in most cases! When I go grey though, I would like an all natural hair dye option, I have heard of these but never had real reviews or anything. It would be wonderul if someone could do reviews! ♥
i dye my hair cant live without my color lol
the color i dye it compliments my skin tone…. LOVE IT
Since I am in my 30’s — my hair definitely has lost alot of “oomph”. The color just looks kind of flat and blah. Not to mention, a few greys sprouting up! I have dark hair — always trying to find the perfect shade of brown for me that is not too dark (black washes me out) and not too red. It definately perks up my complexion when I get my hair dyed!
I feel the same way, always trying to find the perfect shade of brown. Not too dark but dark enough that I like it. I’ve decided to stop fighting the battle with the red…the sun especially adds those undertones.
I wish hair dye wasn’t so damaging, but I do love changing my hair color. I was a natural blonde as a child, so I highlighted my hair off and on through high school, and went a bit too crazy with the highlights after I graduated. Looking back, the yellow blonde tone was not particularly flattering.
Then I decided I was sick of that and used a semi-permanent to go dark brown. I had to keep using a semipermanent to keep the brown from fading to a brassy color. Now that I’m almost at my natural color, I want to get some subtle highlights again in my light brown hair. 😉
I do agree with the other commenters about how platinum blonde hair can look tacky and unnatural on most people. It bothers me when people have no dimension in their bleached hair. It’s their choice, but it would look so much better with some lowlights.
I have used semi-permanent dye almost religiously since tenth grade, when I dyed my hair a dark berry red from its natural light brown/dirty blonde boring mess. For the past four (!!!) years, it has been various shades of medium to darkest brown, and I love it! It makes my pale-ish (NC20-25) skin and blue eyes pop like crazy. I can’t really imagine going back to my “natural” color–I’m definitely a dark brunette at heart!
i’ve always dyed my own hair just to cover the grays.
i’m naturally dark-haired, but i’ve been dying my hair black since i was very young, but only recently got into permenant dye so i now have my roots coming through every 4 or so weeks which is a pain in the butt.
peek-a-boo roots don’t bother me as much as the smell of the actual dye, it’s vile! i love how my hair looks when it’s freshly dyed, but that smell! ugh!
I love having oddly colored hair. I’ve been purple, pink, orange, red, black, blue, and teal.
What I hate is having to do countless touch ups.
I’ve found a method that works well for me lately so I’m sticking to it.
I’ve been bleaching my bangs (since I keep them in a short blunt fringe anyways), and dyeing them bright pink.
I’ve been bleaching just the crown of my hair (top section) and keeping that a vibrant purple. I put purple dye over the rest of my hair, so it looks like a dark purple/black mix.
I only wash my hair every 5 to 7 days and sometimes I use a dry shampoo in between. I use Sulfate free shampoo, and that works best.
The dyes I really love are Pravana Color Silks, Jerome Russel Punky color, and a few Manic Panics. I’m currently trying out a new (to me) dye line to see how well it works in my hair.
I have NEVER dyed my hair. I’m too scared. I’ve seen teh horror story horrible colors, awful damage…. I’ve had enough issues with my hair. And I’ve always gotten so many compliments on the color. In some lights, its auburn red, in other lights its a reddish brown, in others, its strawberry blond. Most of the hair dye I’ve seen can’t mimic the depth of a natural hair color, and I think would look off on me.
That said, I’ve always wondered about getting blond highlights, or darker lowlights… Since i LOVE the sunkissed strawberry blond look, and the deep dark reddish brown look… I think they look a little more polished than my natural color.
I’ve just never been brave enough, or willing to commit to the extra expense.
I love playing with boxed hairdye especially the temporary box kind. I’ve gone brunette and as a lighter blonde and they came out so well! And if I want to keep the color I just buy another for next month at only $7 a pop.
im a hairdresser so of course i love it! =)
Ohh a rant, a rant a big ole fat rant!
I hate that it is nearly impossible to find a brunette color close to my natural hair, I hate the “red ring of death” most brunette colors give me! I hate that the one color I found and loved is no longer.. I hate that I have found NOTHING to banish my gray stripe (a la bonnie Rait but not as cool as hers) Seriously, after 2 days, that dang stripe is peek-a-boo with me. I hate that every time I have had a “salon color job” it looks flat, and I could have saved the money and done it myself, with better results. Just because I don’t do blonde (would love too, won’t work with my coloring, and lets face it I don’t have the patients to do blonde) I WANT QUALITY COLOR!
I hate that the best highlights I can get, are not salon born, or box born, but gotten the old fashioned way.. outside watching my kiddos play sports, or on the rare chance, playing on the beach!
I hate that it is messy, I sling color EVERYWHERE!
*sigh* I guess I will just have to nurture my stripe and learn to adore the salt that is now sprinking into my hair..
Have you tried henna? It may take a few uses to cover the gray hairs, but it´s worth it..and there are some really pretty brown hennas. :o)
Although, henna doesn´t really help in the “messy” department, it is a bit of work and can get messy if you´re not careful. My hair is chin length, so I can manage it on my own, with longer hair I would ask somebody for help..
Recently I tried to not dye my hair. I lasted about 6 months…I just hate the blah, flat, boring brown. Dying my hair is an addiction I think. I really like extremes, dark brown or light blonde and a dark red thrown in once in a while. With the blonde I hate the touchups! Pain in the butt and I don’t do the blonde myself, I leave the bleaching to the pros. Also, I love Frederic Fekkai hair dye. The color lasts longer than any do-it yourself dye.
I know this doesn’t go here but I have to ask! Where could I find that foundation color match table we were working on at the beginning of the year? I’d love to take a look at it again!
As for hair dye, I love it. I’m not afraid of it as hair grows back/you can dye it a different color. My only problems is with roots. I hate seeing roots. But I live with them cause my hair grows back relatively fast and I’m not rich! LOL!
I have had good luck with Redken Shades EQ (semi-permanent). It blends gray away and leaves your hair very shiny/glossy. You can custom blend your own shades too. The secret to getting semi-permanent to cover grays is to leave it on for 45-60 minutes to “stain” your hair. Keep in mind that semi-permanents will not lift – they only deposit color. You can get way too dark if you are not careful; I use a light brown left on for 1 hour and I end up with medium brown hair. I buy mine off of Ebay.
I love dying my own hair, I use L’oreal Dream Blonde- its the best hairdye line I have ever used 🙂 the color never looks unnatural or to bright, and no brassy tones ever =) its my HG hair dye.
If I did not dye my hair (red), I would be depressed. It gives me energy. A good advise is that your hair colour should look like you were born with it. My shade is a natural copper-gold. I have had red hair since I was like 17 (ages ago). I don’t dye to cover gray hair though since I don’t have any.
If your hair is not healthy to begin with, a hair colour does not make it healthy looking. It can look really bad, especially if you use hard looking shades.
Note! Henna can be dangerous!
rant! I dyed my natural African hair with a permanent Aveda colour & my hair just kept breaking & breaking! It’s still the same length after 2 years, and only the dyed end keep breaking off.
I would highly recommend a semi-permanent/temporary colour to anyone who is thinking of getting a dye-job. Good luck!
my natural colour is what i like to refer to as “meh”- not blonde, not brown, not red. just “meh”. so i’ve been colouring my hair on and off (but mostly on) for about 20 years.
i’ve gone all shades of blonde (and only once fried my hair, which was quickly fixed by a very cute cut from my very talented hairdresser), many shades of red and, most recently, black. i’ve done almost all of this myself because i’ve honestly never had a dye job in a salon that i liked. i’ve always found that they assume that just because i don’t want green and turquoise stripes, that somehow means that they have to be totally muted and conservative in waht they do. i’m sure there are good ones, but i’ve seen nothing to convince me that i shouldn’t just keep doing it on my own. (and, fyi, my hair is still really healthy, despite my beste & worst efforts.)
I love dying my hair every unnatural shade under the sun. Nothing is better than freshly dyed hair, the brightness and the lovely bouncy fresh feeling it gives you. I love the confidence it gives you, and that little perk in life. I love the multi tone you get when it starts to fade!
I just wish they would last that little bit longer! x
I have been dying my hair for 11 years. I have been bleached blond (now looking back at it, I’m a bit embarrassed), brown, red and a few unnatural color highlights. I just started dying it myself (only going two shades darker than my natural). It cost me $6 (two boxes, my hair is to my lower back) and it so much cheaper than getting it done. I love dying my hair, but in the past three years I have been bored with any color I pick.
I have been dying my hair for most of my life. When I was younger it was so I could change the colour depending on my mood. Now it’s to cover the first gray hairs poking through. I’ve tried several semi-permanent brands. I love the staying power of Natural Instinct by Clairol, but the colour selection for brunettes leaves al ot to be desired. Natural Match by L’Oreal has great colours, but doesn’t cover the grays for very long. It would be great to find great colour that was longer lasting.
I’ve been dying my hair since middle school. In the last 15 years I’ve probably been through the entire Manic Panic catalog! I haven’t done anything drastic since high school though. Right now I’m loving L’Oreal Feria. I have Blowout Burgundy (which is a bitch to touch up every 4 weeks because red fades so quickly) on top and Black Leather underneath.
I love hair color – I’m been doing my hair practically forever. I was born blonde and when in my teens it started getting that dirty blonde color I started to lighten it. I can’t imagine myself any other color…although I’d love it if someone invented a pill to take so I didn’t have to be bothered with roots. I think it’d great there are so many shades to choose from and it’s fun to try different variations. Now that I also have some gray coming in I would hate not being able to color my hair.
I’ve died my hair for almost half of my life, always more or less in the same color family.
From the age of five or so I found my medium-dark blonde too bleh, lightend it a little to make it prettier and was happy, until I decided to go reddish blonde. I’ve been sth between red and blonde for the last decade and am super happy with it, when I get the right shade.
During the last two years I went lighter and lighter as I had somewhat darkened my hair by accident while trying red henna for to years with nasty color results. The lightening back from henna and in general has damaged it more than the more gentle dies before, I have a little more split ends but still not many, I can live with it.
Now I’m a light-medium strawberry blonde and love it, I wouldn’t look like myself without strawberry hairdies! 😀
i hate hair that looks unhealthy. i dont care what color hair or what cut, but healthy hair is a must
have NEVER dye my hair… guess I hate when you can see the roots, looks awful!!!
I dyed my hair a couple of times when I was younger a lighter shade of brown. My hair is a deep black so lightening hair for me, it always turns reddish. Nehow I loved the light brown but I just didn’t keep up with it, and not it has finally all grown out and I think my hair is just so much healthier without dye. I have a few grays, but nothing to noticable, I’m 28 now. Maybe I will dye my hair in my thirties but my mother has beautiful salt and pepper hair.
I love dying my hair – I love red! But I found out Friday that I’m pregnant… so no more hair dye for me!
Congrats!!!!
Congratulations!
I went from light blonde to a SUPER dark brown back in November. I got it done at a salon, and I’ve been using the at-home hair dyes ever since to touch it up. I can’t seem to find a brand that works for me though. My roots are always lighter, no matter how much I dye it, and I can’t achieve the dark brown shade I had from the salon, even with a box titled “Brown/Black”.
Love hair dye; Blonde, Red, and Purple good times! I once dyed it back to my natural color, thank goodness for 24 grocery stores. Oh yeah I did two dye jobs in less then 2 hours. I was so afraid that I was going end up with something horrible, but all was well.
I saw so many girls and women who colored their hair so many times (blonde) that it turned greenish…you know the ones who use bleaching on all of their hair and (because of all the damage) it starts having a green, teal, blue tint to it…that I really find ghastly!
ive not seen my natural colour since i was 12! im 21 now haha. however – my hair is light blonde, with cool and warm shades through it, and it is SO SO healthy. im complimented almost daily on it.
i find with my natural colour – ashy light light brown, dark blonde, its flat dull limp hair. with a lighten, its gets volume and brighter colour. and with a good treatment, the health stays in my hair
i went from black to very light blonde myself at home with bleach, it took 7 months to do and only 3 dyes, but for all you dark that want to be lighter, patience and treatment are key 😀
it was worth taking so long to dye my hair. it actually grows now too, colouring my hair so much early on, started to take its toll on how it grew. i dye my hair once every 3 months maybe (just the roots) and its growing amazingly!
rant over 😉
I love dying my hair. It’s a few hours in the salon that make me feel great and feel fabulous 🙂
Loreal Color Rays’ Fuschia Flash always came out cherry red on me. The cherry red color (whose name I forgot)? The exact same (or almost exact same) cherry red.
I love my Pravana hair color. It allows me to
get my hot pink
or bright violet fashion colors I want. I just wish they lasted
forever ;-/
I leave that up to my stylist. She would kill me if I try and attempt it myself, because lets face it, blonde is tricky to do at home! :)I fell in love with Diablo Cody’s platinum short crop when I saw a pic, and had it done the same way on Saturday. It looks awesome. I love putting colour on my hair! 🙂
I have an unhealthy obsession with dyeing my hair unnatural colors. Right now I’m hot pink and orange. Special Effects is my holy grail; it doesn’t fade, it’s cheap, and because it’s a vegetable based dye I can leave it in for hours and it will actually condition my hair. =D
I’m 17 and I first started dying my hair when I was 13/14 (mhm, I was one of those, I had bright magenta hair) and I’ve had every colour of the rainbow! (Grey, Green, Yellow and orange were not intended!)
Now I’m back to a natural colour, dark brown which is about 4 shades darker than my natural hair colour. I think perfect 10 from clariol is the best thing to happen to my hair! perfect dark brown without being black, as I’m about NC/NW10 black looks nice, but it can look a little harsh.
I’m soo tempted for red!!
i honestly regret coloring my hair. my natural hair color is dark brown and the first time i colored it was when I was 14. That was the biggest mistake since I colored it black and then when I was 16 I tried going blonde. well i started with toning my hair and adding a few highlites and then as I kept on going to my hair dresser I ended up an ash blonde which I loved dont get me wrong but now at age 20 my hair is so damaged. I go back in forth with my blonde hair since the bleach tends to make my hair break. but now I can proudly say I am a red head and will be for a while. I love it and think it looks good on my skin tone. though like mentioned on several posts its hard to maintain especially since my hair was blonde. like my roots are the auburn red but the hair that was blonde is fading to a red brown. eh whatever, i dont want to mess with my hair anymore so like i said I will leave it as is for I hope 3 yrs. I want my hair to grow long!
I love the smell. That was always my favourite part when I would dye my hair.
I don’t like how much upkeep it is (especially if you are going many shades lighter/darker than your natural shade), how damaging it can be and how expensive it can be in the long run.
I haven’t dyed my hair since the 10th grade, so.. about 4 years. I went through a “I hate my blonde hair” phase, dyed it dark brown for a few months, then black, and then dark auburn (which looked really pretty). I’ve since grown to prefer my natural colour!
It’s not the hair color I have a problem with. I have been blonde, brown, red and black and every combination possible. My issue lies with the Hairstylist. Unfortunately, I cannot seem to find a good one no matter how hard I try. I show them a picture of what I want and I end up going home almost everytime with my hair two shades darker than the picture. *Shakes head*
Rant: How messy (applying at home) and/or expensive (getting it done at a salon) it can be.
Rave: The transformative properties! If bright-colored hair were naturally attainable, I couldn’t care less about dye. But since I’m not Sailor Pluto, I’d have to resort to a bottle for green locks.
Like Cheryl Crow croons “I think a change will do you good.” With the start of a new school year – for you, or your kids – many are ready for a change. While a new hairstyle is always good, sometimes all you need is a bit of color. And great way to test at home is with a temporary hair color like Roux Fanci-Full Rinse.
With no ammonia or peroxide, Roux Fanci-Full Rinse is safe and non-damaging to your hair. It deposits haircolor instantaneously to even tones and removes brassiness. It will even blend away gray hairs. An added benefit of using the Roux Rinse is that they have an accompanying product, the Roux Fanci-Full Color Styling Mousse that enables you to add a little more color with every hair styling you do. The Rinse is available in 13 different hair colors, while the Mousse is available in seven. Check them out at: http://www.haircareusa.com/roux_index.htm
To keep your hair color even longer, try using with a good color-depositing shampoo or conditioner. There are many out there, but our favorites are Altobella ClayPac ClayOns Color Shampoo and Claypac Color Conditioner: http://www.haircareusa.com/claypac_index.htm
The Claypac Shampoo combines a Multi-Vitamin blend of A, C, E and Pro-Vitamin B5 with vegetable proteins. It is a moisturizing shampoo that cleanses the hair and scalp while refreshing and brightening hair color.
The ClayPac Color Conditioners with color enhancers were designed to maintain the condition of the hair while being used on a daily basis without build up. ClayPac Color Conditioners will detangle, maintain brightness, tone and control fading.
So give it a shot…of hair color that is, to spruce up your hair style without sacrificing length. For these and other great hair products, visit http://www.haircareusa.com
