Rant & Rave: Emerald Green

Share: Tell us what you love and hate about emerald green-colored beauty items (it is the color of the year, after all)!

my answer: Well, nothing but LOVE for emerald green since it’s one of my favorite colors in beauty. I suppose a rant would be that they are prone to staining the skin.

The emerald green polish Zoya put out for Zang Toi stained my fingers HORRENDOUSLY.

That said, I do love the color for most things except eye shadow, it clashes with my eyes. Otherwise I love it and it looks fabulous against my coloring.

xamyx Avatar

While it’s not a color I wear often (although I should, as it really is especially flattering with my coloring), I really do like it. Most can wear it in one form or another, and it definitely is a better choice for “Color of the Year” than last years orange (which can be trickier to pull off, and isn’t as visually appealing as a color).

It’s also a shade that can be taken year-round, for those whose makeup is influenced by that sort of thing.

I think it is interesting that the comments so far have listed emerald as easy to wear! I find the color challenging – I’m very fair with blue eyes and I don’t really like it as shadow. I’m okay with it on nails. I thought Tangerine Tango last year was much easier to wear and more flattering, but I very often reach for orange shadow.

Alessandra Avatar

I like it as a nail polish, think it’s decent as a going out eyeshadow and hate it as a day eyeshadow. Whenever I go into Sephora, I feel really bad for all the employees who are clearly being forced to wear it.

Ani_BEE Avatar

*Chuckles* I can imagine their getting sick of the Emerald Green pantone of the year collection. Last years Tango Tangerine is a bit more wearable daily in my option.

xamyx Avatar

I haven’t noticed any Sephora SAs wearing anything from the collection, and I frequent 5 different locations, at least once a week. I’m sure, though, like many other retail establishments, there’s likely some sort of employee incentive program going on based on sales, so perhaps the store(s) in your area have gotten together to try to really promote the collection. or, they all just really, honestly like it…

Terri Avatar

Off topic but you have FIVE Sephora’s near you? I can’t begin to tell you how envious I am……
On topic, I have never worn emerald green and am not sure it would look good on me….blue eyes blonde hair, light (mature) skin.

Alix Avatar

I love real emerald green, but hate the tealish tone that Pantone picked for this year. “Emerald” is really not an accurate description of it. Kinda blah.

Yellowlantern Avatar

I think it’s a pretty color, I really like it for nails and as a hair color. It’s a color that’s easy for me to pull off.

TBH, I don’t really understand the concept of a color of the year, how they come up with it, or more importantly why it matters at all etc. I find it really weird that this color of the year thing has become such a big deal in recent years. Perhaps since Pantone has only in the last couple years teamed up with Sephora? IDK, wear the colors you like because you like them, not just because some color corporation declared it fashionable for the next year.

Sorry for the rant. Guess it’s good I choose to do it in a rant and rave post.

Dusty Avatar

It’s just another way to sell you think. Clever marketing I suppose but I’m always turned off by people saying “you MUST have ____ this year.” It makes me NOT want it LOL!

Speaking as a graphic designer I think it takes Pantone down a couple of notches – it really dumbs down the brand IMO. When they say the color is Emerald Green I always want to ask, “Emerand Green… is that the one on uncoated or coated stock?” LOL!

Yellowlantern Avatar

My inner rebellious teen that never grew up always hates being told what fashions/makeup/colors I “need” in order to be considered stylish. 😀

JQ Avatar

“people saying ‘you MUST have ____ this year.’ It makes me NOT want it LOL!”

^ Totally! I’ll wear the colors I like, and ignore the ones I don’t. The only way corporations affect my color choices is by choosing what to make available… but if I don’t like anything, I just won’t buy anything.

Emerald green is nice, though. I like it much better since I colored my hair black.

xamyx Avatar

I have nothing against the concept, it’s something that’s been around for quite some time, only in a broader sense. The idea of choosing one color to spotlight may give someone the push they need to try something they never would have otherwise considered, making it “safer” in a way. I think alot of us here take it for granted there really are alot of people out there who have no experience with color when it comes to makeup, or they have preconceived ideas of what bright/intense/dramatic colors represent. Even if this years color, or even last years, is a miss, there’s hope a future choice may be a hit.

Personally, I don’t jump on anything because it’s a trend, however, I do wait for past trends to pop up again every few years (which they all do, LOL), and as a result, I only shop for clothes when they do. The same can be said for makeup; I have the experience to know what I like, and just because a brand puts something out, doesn’t mean I have to bite (which is why I typically don’t buy Spring & Summer collections).

Nekona Avatar

For some reason the whole color of the year thing reminds me of the Capitol from Hunger Games, or even more so from Wall-E with the bit about : “blue, it’s the new red” and all that jazz.

Marketing ploy, though I do love green and did get the mascara…

Mariella Avatar

I also agree and it’s basically what my rant was about too. It reminds me of the scene in The Devil Wears Prada where Meryl Streep’s character explains to her new little minion that the reason she’s wearing her sad blue sweater has NOTHING to do with her own choice and EVERYTHING to do with the fact that 3 years earlier, some designer decided it was his “colour du saison” sort of thing. I love red; I’ve always loved and worn red…nothing to do with Pantone or any designer deciding it was the colour for his collection and then getting “trickled down” to me some years later. It is all a marketing ploy…very much like my friend’s encounter with the “Butternut Bevy sweater”.

Nicoco Chanel Avatar

It wasn’t meryl’s character, it was her pa! /nitpick

Also “florals, for spring? Groundbreaking” is one of my favourite trend quotes ever.

Mariella Avatar

Not understanding your comment but it was, indeed, Meryl’s character (Amanda Priestly)…..”that lumpy blue sweater…what you don’t know is that that sweater is not just blue, it’s not turquoise. It’s not lapis. It’s actually cerulean. And you’re also blithely unaware of the fact that in 2002, Oscar de la Renta did a collection of cerulean gowns.”

Starfish Avatar

No complaints here. I adore emerald beauty products. My favorite color is blue and purple but you can’t deny that green is striking.

Colleen Avatar

I tried the emerald eyeliner trend a couple of weeks ago and it looked great… until I tried to wash it off. Three days later (with multiple face washings per day, plus a pantload of makeup remover) and I STILL had an unattractive green stain under my eyes. In conclusion, I am over the emerald trend!

Amanda Avatar

Sometimes using plain oil, like olive oil, helps me remove my makeup I’m having trouble getting off. Now its one of the first things I go to to take makeup off

Liza Avatar

I love it. I actually love this whole “color of the year” thing. It’s really fun! I never really thought to wear emerald green much on myself, but because it’s the color of the year, I sifted through my stash and pulled out ones I like and I started really wearing them a lot. So much so, that some became sort of rediscovered favorites! I also think emerald green is a color most people can wear and there are so many ways to wear it (liner, eyeshadow, nails etc). I don’t really care for green lips, which I’ve seen on a few people. I just don’t think it’s realistic for your average woman to go out wearing that. However, I think generally speaking, I really like the color of the year this year for sure.

Melissa Avatar

It’s ok… I’m not in love with it on me but I think it’s a very inspiring color to work with as far as an accent or on accessories. I can see why they chose it as color of the year. I of course don’t feel compelled to wear it just bc of that but it’s a color I’m interested in exploring. I think that’s the whole idea, just to inspire people to maybe test out a color they may not normally wear and that can be a lot of fun! I personally am obsessed with lavender this year and ain’t nothing gonna change that!! 🙂

Mariella Avatar

what I hate is twofold:
First, I hate that a lot of the greens cashing in on the “colour of the year” mishegoss aren’t even emerald green anyway. Secondly, I really HATE these “decrees” from on high about what colour is “THE” colour for the year, the season, the moment…. Years ago, every second fall, they’d try to foist orange on us. Oh, they’d call it terracotta or pumpkin or “Autumn Spice” but it was still orange and it was still vile. I remember my best friend wanting to get my opinion on a sweater she’d bought which was orange and which her husband told her wasn’t very flattering in that particular colour. L said “But the saleswoman said it was Butternut Bevy” (or some such thing). When I told her that I agree with her husband – that, dress it up with whatever adjectives you want, it was still ORANGE and it was till ugly, she finally conceded. Whew…talk about a RANT. Anyway, my point is simply that I don’t like some nebulous bunch of folks, who I often thing are busting a gut and saying “Wanna bet we can get them to go crazy for THAT colour? Just watch…”, decreeing what is “in”. I like to buck trends anyway, but still it bugs me.

Sabriel Avatar

Do you remember the great variety of colors termed “oxblood” for fall of 2011?

There is naturally a lot of variation in what people will call “emerald green,” and there’s about to be a lot more. Kiwi green, chartreuse, pine green, sea-foam… it’s all “emerald” this year. 😉

Anyways, I like green. A cool/muted emerald (pine) green is one of my best colors. If I see a shirt in that shade, I snatch it up, so I think I’ll be buying a lot of shirts this year.

Rant: Seems to bring out the red in my cheeks. I’m not into jewel tones, I prefer more muted earthy greens.

Rave: Brings out the red in my hair, too. It’s bright and happy and fun.

Carla N. Avatar

I know what you mean about there being a lot of variation.
While I love green, there are certain shades (olive, lime) of the color that look like death on me, and others (true emerald, deep teal) that are fabulous.
This pertains to clothing color only, though. I just do not do green beauty products.
I can skip that trend!
However, I’m all over the red lipstick thing, on the opposite side of the color wheel.

Mariella Avatar

I actually have an emerald green pencil liner from Rimmel from a few years ago (before the “decree”) that is called Emerald Sparkle (I think). I guess Rimmel was light years ahead of the trend (or ahead of the “decree”). I really do like wearing it under my lower lashes. My eyes are dark brown and the green looks really pretty in contrast.

Carla N. Avatar

While green is one of my very favorite colors, probably due in part to the fact that I’m blessed with bright green eyes, I can’t imagine wearing a green-colored beauty product.
Green nail polish? Nah – I rarely wear nail polish, but when I do I prefer a subtle neutral.
Green mascara? No way – the color would “compete” with my eye color.
Green eyeshadow? Nope – see above.
Green eyeliner – Most likely not, though I *might* consider the thinnest humanly possible line on lower lids only.
Green blush? NO – does not occur in nature.
Green lipstick or gloss – YUCK, disease!
This is yet another trend it looks like I’m going to have to kip!

EvilStepQueen Avatar

In the Sephora Pantone collection there is this horrible grass green cream shadow block, and that yellow based grass green, I feel, looks absolutely hideous on me. If there’s an extra touch of blue in there, then it looks fab on me.

Wwendalynne Avatar

Greens are tricky for me–along with last year’s orange–and can end up totally fugly against my skin so I’m not a big fan. I’m attracted to all shades of green, but green does not love me back. As far as pantone colour of the year thingee.. yeah yeah yeah so I can go out and buy a bunch of things I do not need that will be considered totally passe by next year ..no thanks. I’ll buy what I like not because some schmuck picked a specific colour out of their arse and deigned it king for a year.

Alejandra Avatar

Definitely a rave from me.I have been having a love affair with Emerald green since 3-4 years ago. It’s such a fab color. One of my favorites for sure.I love it on eyes nails, and clothes.

Lara Avatar

Not directly related to this but I was just going through some of the looks you’ve created. I love ‘Jealousy wakes with blue and ‘Illamasqua Human Fundamentalism Eyeshadows’. They look amazing!
Can you please break it down a little next time for some of us who aren’t great with makeup so we could give it a go?

Michelle Avatar

I’m medium with yellow-toned Asian skin, and I think any kind of green (except for chartreuse) looks HORRENDOUS on me. It’s so unflattering against my skin, and it stains too! I’ve seen people rock it though, so maybe it’s just my bad luck.

Liz Avatar

I think emerald green is a very striking color, but it’s not for me. I’m red-headed, dark-eyed and extremely fair, and I always feel that I look much older (stately or dignified rather than fresh and natural) when I wear emerald. The same thing tends to happen to me in like saturated cobalt or crimson, so maybe it’s just a jewel tone thing.

MERI Avatar

I think its a horrible choice for the “it” color this year, green is green when it comes to makeup, emeralds on my fingers? oh yeah, Im in but not on my skin… 😀

Jade Avatar

I’m not a fan – it seems too gaudy and childlike to me. On nails it often looks over the top, and it seems too much in eye makeup too. I do like blackened green, either emerald eyeshadow over a black base or a black eyeshadow with a green shift. Keep in mind I’m working from my colouring! It can look amazing on other people.

VickyM Avatar

I love Emerald green 😀 , of course I like the dark shades of green and the deep and medium colors of Emerald green. I on the other hand hate light green, not only in makeup but in clothes and accesories aswell I never liked it.

Nina Avatar

I Love the way it Looks on my very pale Skin, but i think as an eyeshadow it doesn’t suit me for some reason… I like to wear it as an Eyeliner under my eye or on the waterline and as an nailpolish, eventhrough they sometimes can stain my nails, but not as horrible as most red nail polishes do.

Quinctia Avatar

I don’t have anything against the color, I’m just sick of seeing it.

I can’t be the only one whose response to so many things in the same color in one year is “Meh, now I don’t like this color anymore.”

Lark Avatar

There’s actual Emerald, and then there’s all these grassy yellow colors people think are Emerald. Hate it when the color of cheap grassy trash emeralds gets pushed! It’s like chartreuse, we get lime green? Go to a good jewelry store and clap an eye on a quality emerald! Then pass by a liquor store and look at actual chartreuse. That’s the color! Drives me crazy!

Aida Avatar

I think it’s definitely a pretty color, just not something that’s up my alley. I don’t think I have anything that color. I got a coupon once from Sally’s for a free China Glaze nail polish so I picked an emerald green one, just because it was declared the color of the year, but I ended up donating it. It’s just not for me :).
