Philosophy Supernatural Superbeautiful SPF 20 Review, Photos

Feels Like a Tinted Moisturizer, Looks Like Foundation
Philosophy Supernatural Superbeautiful SPF 20 ($30.00 for 1.25 oz.) is certainly the hybrid foundation it describes itself as. It delivers a nice, medium-coverage finish that’s just slightly dewy but not oily, but it feels more like a tinted moisturizer than a liquid foundation. It’s even on the moisturizing side (but I wouldn’t skip the moisturizer!).
The texture is very creamy and almost gel-like, though it is a water-based foundation with the first inactive ingredient being water. It’s easily applied with fingertips (again, like a tinted moisturizer) or with a foundation sponge/brush. I found it wore very well, without any fading, settling, or migration over an eight hour period. I have warm undertones and a light medium skin tone (NC25), and I found Beige to be a good color match for me. I think the semi-matte finish of the foundation helps it stay natural-looking, and the creaminess of the product (without being heavy or thick) also helps to keep it from accentuating dryness.
I so rarely think of Philosophy for anything but skincare and bodycare, but the foundation was a definite–pleasant–surprise. I forgot to take photos of the packaging, and I’ve literally had that on my to-do list for three months along with a bajillion other things, so instead of waiting around for that to happen, I said on with the review! The packaging is a flat, slim squeeze-tube that’s easy to control–it really looks exactly as it is pictured in retailer product photos.

RECOMMENDATION: If you like the feel of tinted moisturizer but need more coverage than they often offer, Philosophy’s Superbeautiful might be the best of both worlds.

No foundation / Philosophy Supernatural Superbeautiful + Setting Powder
What setting powder do you use?
Laura Mercier’s
is it acne & oily skin friendly?
Skin is very individual – what breaks me out might not break you out. Based on my experience and a cursory glance at the ingredients, it seems like it shouldn’t be aggravating.
do you use her mineral makeup or just the translucent powder?
The Loose Setting Powder 🙂
I actually like the coverage of this foundation. I would wear it as a tinted moisturizer. I think it gives a sheer to medium coverage by looking at your pics. I can definitely see myself testing this out. I would like to purchase a tinited moisturizer that I really like. The price is around abut the same price point as most tinted moisturizer. Have you tried Dior TM? Thanks for this review as us makeup lovers are always willing to try a new product.
I haven’t tried Dior’s yet!
ooh, i may have to go check this out:]
it looks great on you:]
Wow the effect is so natural and pretty! i love the green eyeliner that matches with your tshirt too!
Thank you!
I really like this! I might pick some up for when I go back to school in the fall and don’t have time/don’t feel like dealing with foundation. I love my liquids, but I would also love something just to smear on my face & go!
They’re right; it *is* superbeautiful! Shame it has a bit of dimethicone in it — I’ve cut ‘cones from my skincare routine entirely, and I’d hate to mess it up after all this hard work!
I didn’t even notice – it wasn’t in the first 10-15 ingredients, lol. Thankfully, I know my skin can tolerate SOME dimethicone (I wear MUFE’s HD, which has it in the first few ingredients), but I just can’t wear a *ton* of products that all have it.
Aww, jealous! Two days of wearing MUFE HD (with no other silicones in my skin or haircare routines) and my skin was an absolute mess. Sucks, because MUFE HD is lovely! 🙂
I didn’t even realize MUFE HD had them (I bought it so long ago…), but it’s definitely not a culprit! (I am doing quite well, skin-wise, in terms of active acne, at the moment!)
I can tell! Your skin is looking SO good, Christine 🙂
I’m sorry, but is that an ingredient that is bad for your skin?
For some, yes, but it depends on your skin!
Looking for a TM, something that will hold up in Palm Springs, do you think this will hold up?
Thanks
I think it could!
I like the way this looks, it doesn’t look like you’re wearing anything!
How would you compare this to Laura Mercier’s Tinted Moisturizers? It seems like it’s cheaper although I am not sure if you get the same amount. It looks like we have a similar skin-tone. I use LM Bisque oil-free in the summer and regular in colder months. So I’d really like to know if this might be worth the switch to?
It’s more coverage, a little thicker, and less dewy in comparison to LM!
Wow! That made a big difference, yet still looked natural. I like it!
This looks really good. The setting powder was the icing on the cake!
the coverage is really amazing!
I like how you set up this review, the pictures really help!
AGREED!
It looks lovely on you. I struggle to find a good match for NW20-25 skin from philosophy, and with a TM, the match has to be good.
Wow Christine, your skin looks great! I’M BUYING(:
Thank you, Prerna!
Christine, what makes this a tinted moisturizer if it looks so much like a foundation?
It’s not a tinted moisturizer – it’s a foundation… It feels more like a tinted moisturizer than your typical liquid foundation, though.
This product looks great on you. Thanks for the step by step pictures on the differences between each application step – that really helps show how this product makes a difference! Happy to see they have a range of colors that goes into the deeper tones. Must go try to color match! 🙂
Thank you, Dini!
I love the effect but it’d probably too light coverage for me. What setting powder do you use?
I use Laura Mercier’s Loose Setting Powder!
Whoops. That was the first question someone else asked. Do ignore my comment hahaha.
No worries!
that looks really GOOD! I’m going to have to check it out when I’m done with my Laura Mercier tinted moisturizer. I despise wearing real foundation everyday.
Let me know if you like it, Fari!
Looking good! Really natural, I like that.
Me too!
You should definitely set up all your foundation reviews like this! I would like to see more foundation reviews in general, actually.
This is how they are set up, I just don’t take on many foundations to review 🙂
I second the motion– would love to see more foundation reviews! I bet they’re time consuming but sooo helpful to your readers!
OMG Christine, are you the 1 in 10 people who don’t have dark under eyes?! Btw the foundation and setting powder looks like second skin on you.
The foundation just hides it, haha.
Looks promising =) What did you use on your waterline? I’ve been trying to find something similar to that.
Thanks
I believe it was NYX’s Forest kohl!
Wow! Looks nice on you!!
Thanks, Maria!
this looks great and I’ve been looking for a tinted moisturizer but it’s hit or miss for me with Philosophy. I had a pretty bad reaction to the Hope in a Jar 🙁
🙁
Christine, what’s your skin type? oily, combo, or dry?
Normal 🙂
You’re a brave woman, Christine. I’d never post a photo of myself without foundation on the Web!
It’s tough, but someone’s gotta do it 😛
hmm, would you say that it’d work on super oily skin?
I think it would, but I have pretty normal skin so I can’t tell you based on experience.
I love this stuff! It’s the only liquid “foundation” I can wear that doesn’t break be out. I set mine with a little dusting of Bare Minerals Matte foundation for extra coverage 🙂 The Philosophy colors are so forgiving too. I also wear Beige in the summer and I am tons lighter than you are LOL I also use Sand which I find to be fantastic at cutting redness in my skintone.
Yay!!
wow this looks good!!
Just went to sephora & bought it thanks to
you! It’s so easy for me to buy makeup based on your reviews because I’m one shade lighter than whatever you wear! Can’t wait to test it out!
LOL! I hope you love it! Keep me posted, Diane 🙂
I recently bought this in the Natural Ivory (I have used Philosophy’s Supernatural Airbrush Canvas in Natural for over 6 years) and really like it!! It gives me nice coverage, but still natural and glowing..my skin but better!!
Woo!! So glad you love it, Sarah!
wow this looks so natural! 🙂 im NC25 also and do u think it would be ok to go a shade darker to match my body? or would it look weird?
If you make sure to blend around the neck, it should be fine.
loved the coverage but more than that loved ur lipcolor….whats that shade that u are wearing on ur lips……??
I have no idea, lol!
OMG christineeee ur skin is like almost PERFECT without anything on!!! ur very very lucky! *touching the wood* i love this and this is exactlyyy what ive been looking for something a lil more than tinted moisturizer and not too much of a foundation! i wanted to ask u cause i just turned 23 n im really afraid of those wrinkles n all that starting up! i know maybe ur not an expert on like those sort of things but just wanted to know wat do u think would be the best things to prevent the skin from wrinkling at a young age! and ive noticed my skin type changed from sort of dry normal to combination! FREAKY!! thank u so much if u had time to answer me!
Aww, thank you, Jennifer!! 🙂
Sunscreen is the BEST method!
this foundation looks really good!
what technique did you use for appyling this foundation?
Fingers here 🙂 I thought it was a tinted moisturizer, LOL!
I bought this foundation yesterday and so far, I really really like it! Thanks for your review, Christine! 🙂
Yay!
wow looks like you have a hilighter on. Question, how does this compare to Korres Watermelon Lightweight Tinted Moisturiser SPF 30 ?
Korres’ has a little lighter coverage and is entirely matte.
hey christine!
looking beautiful as always 🙂
I need your quick opinion on this. I have combo skin and have tried all the tinted moisturizers and haven’t found one i’m “thrilled” about. I do use “makeup forever” (liquid foundation) and i LOVE it but i’m going to hawaii soon and need a foundation/tinted moisturizer. i’ll be soo hot and sticky and am not planning on wearing makeup…should i splurge and get it?
Hey Maui,
Well, this isn’t technically a tinted moisturizer, but I think if you’re looking for something lightweight but still decent coverage, this might be worth it. 🙂
How does this compare to the Diorskin Nude Foundation in terms of coverage, finish, long-lastingness, etc?
I found the coverage better (Nude is very sheer), this isn’t as dewy as Nude (which is definitely dewy), though they last the same on me – but keep in mind I don’t have oily skin.
I assume this is the best place for this question, even though the post is old. You say that you applied this with your fingers, a brush and a sponge, do you remember which worked best? Was it a wet or dry sponge? And what kind of brush did you use?
I do like this product but the brush I used (Sonia Kushak’s flat top blender) made it apply streaky.
Thanks
Fingers, honestly!
Great. Fingers it will be. Thanks again.
