Quick Review: NYX Lip Pencils

NYX Lip Pencils ($3.50 for 0.04 oz.) are excellently pigmented lip pencils to enhance, mute, or neutralize your lips. If you can’t find the shade you need amongst NYX’s 53 different lip pencils, I don’t know you ever will! Like most pencils, I recommend swatching it once or twice on the back of your hand, which will soften the point to make it easier to apply to the lips. You can use the slanted edge to get a really crisp line when lining your lips, too. For a traditional lip pencil, these are exceptionally creamy and glide on easily. They also wear well without feeling dry (but they are matte and for most, you’ll want to layer a lipstick on top or a balm underneath if you plan to wear it for extended periods of time).

  • Natural (810) is a medium beige with a hint of brown.
  • Plum (812) is a deepened, berried red–not really plum to me, though.
  • Auburn (801) is a muted brick red with brown.
  • Dolly Pink (839) is a bright, blue-based cotton candy pink. This would work well with shades like MAC Snob, Lady Gaga, etc.

  • Product: 29/30
  • Value: 9/10
  • Ease of Use: 4/5
  • Packaging: 4/5

RECOMMENDATION: These are lovely lip liners, not even for the price but on their own merits.

I have mostly Chanel and Lancome lipliners and a few YSL but then I decided to purchase 3 of these NYX on a whim one day at Ulta and now I find myself reaching out to my NYX most of the time. I have ordered more colors now. They have just the right creaminess for a lipliner plus so many colors.

My lips are pretty pigmented as well, I just ordered a couple of these NYX lip liners..I was wondering if you owned any other colors..what would work for pigmented lips?

I’m a huge fan of NYX l/l. I think I have like 10 of them (and want more) — purchased on Cherry Culture when there was a BOGO Free and a 20% off sale last year. So I think I paid like $1 each. I stopped purchasing MAC l/l once I discovered these!

I was just thinking today – that would be nice if Christine have posted the NYX lipliners…, and there they are – u are amazing!!! Thank you so much!
P.S. are you going to post more swatches of NYX l-liners?

Hey Christine, do you know if NYX lip liners have any mineral oil or other similar potential “problem” ingredients? I’ve wanted to try NYX products like blushes and eyeshadows for a while, but found that one or both contained mineral oil, which breaks me out terribly. I have somewhat sensitive (or picky!) skin, but I’m on a budget and in the market for a few lip pencils, so it’d be great if these might work out.

These are good and cheap. I find myself not wanting to get the luxury brands pencils because these are just so good. I use Deep Red for lining Chanel Allure Laque Dragon, btw.

I bought Natural a while ago and i do like it, but i don’t find it particularly creamy? It goes on nicely though, but I def wouldn’t want to wear this alone as I find it rather line-enhancing because it’s not creamy. lasting power wasn’t great either. recently i bought a Stila Long Wearing lip pencil and I was shocked at how much softer that was (well, ti wasn’t super soft/creamy either, but it was softer than the NYX) not to mention how crazily long wearing it was. it didn’t make my lips feel dry either, and didn’t emphasize lines on my lips (which the NYX sort of did). either way, both are good lipliners, but Stila is better (but it’s also a ME brand so i guess that makes sense lol).

thanks for the review!

Awesome pics! I wish you would swatch all their lip pencils! I’m getting into lip pencils these days and own 2 of these which I love, (Hot Red and Fucshia). I want to buy more but I need to see swatches of how the colors really look before plunking down $3.50 per pencil as I don’t want to get shades I’ll never use. Your swatches and product pics are the best anywhere, hands down! Anyway, thanks for doing these shades. I really want Dolly Pink now 🙂
