Goodness, your poor lips must be tired! I do appreciate all they go through for us. Although I’d love to have a lipstick named Barbarella, the shades Dolce Vita and Roman Holiday are more my style. (Love these three film names!) Damage is tempting, too.
Speaking of Roman Holiday, I noticed an old review of this shade from about five years ago in which it looks much, much lighter than it does in this new swatch. Did they tweak the shades?
The whole range was reformulated! Additionally, while I don’t have physical product to compare (I have maybe half a dozen of the Lipstick formula at this point, most being LE shades), please keep in mind that while I’ve always tried to make my photos as accurate as I could… it is also “at the time” and on particular equipment, e.g. in five years, I have changed my lighting, my camera, my monitor, and even my physical space (I moved states!).
Well, that just gives me an excuse to spend some time swatching at Sephora! (I could think of worse things to do with my lunch break!!!)
Have fun! From what I have seen, Nordstrom/Saks seem to have almost all the shades (the 12 in red cases are exclusive to NARS), but Sephora/Ulta definitely have much more curated ranges.
I bought Barbarella some years back, mostly for the name (and because I didn’t have anything similar), and it was one of the absolute worst cosmetics purchases I’ve ever made. The only lipstick in my entire life I would give an F.
… But hey, maybe the 2019 version is much better? Let’s hope!
I love sheer (but not too sheer) formula bullet lipsticks and since I’m almost out of my favorite ones from UD and they’ve been discontinued I’m going to try some from NARS. These swatches are definitely helpful. Thanks!
Oooh, I really like G*psy, but that name…I can’t do it. I spent a couple years living in the Balkans and that particular slur is way too real to me.
Yeah, I love that shade sooo much, but if anyone asks me what it’s called…that would be problematic and I’d be ashamed of myself. Yet, I really want it. Could just take the label off and rename it!
I’m on a lipstick no buy right now so it’s sort of a moot point, but I have an ever-growing wishlist of lipsticks to check out when the no buy ends. But by that time Christine will have posted dupes!
I know. It’s my favorite shade of the bunch, but the name makes it a no-go. Hopefully, there are some good dupes out there.
Rachel and Thirteenthirteen, there MUST be a fabulous dupe for that problematically named lipstick… possibly even one we may have, I hope?
I had the same reaction! I love NARS lipsticks and I hate NARS naming conventions! they reek of misogyny and racism
I’m so confused. What were the various instagram photos I saw others post where the new NARS cases were going to be red? Was that just photoshopped? Or a different line?
The 12 original shades are in red cases, not all of the shades.
I really love Damage, G*psy and Tanganyka! Although, I’ve got a funny feeling that UD TMI is very close to Damage? It will be interesting to see if it is on the future dupe list, because if it isn’t….?
Ooh good call. TMI is one of my favorites and I still have 2/5 backups left (from when I hoarded it when it got discontinued). It definitely does look similar which is probably why I added Damage to my wishlist immediately. If it is a dupe and similar in formula I’m excited because it is a color I wear almost every day – hence why I’ve run through so many backups already.
So excited that you have all the shades now Christine, but also that’s a LOT of lipsticks to swatch and test! Thanks so much as always for your hard work!
While these are marketed as sheer they appear much less than most “sheer” lipstick based on your lip freckle. In most of the swatches you can barely see it and that is knowing where it is at. If the formula feels nice and they stay in place this might be another lippie that I would be interested in purchasing. I have been really enjoying sheerer formula’s lately and purchased a couple from Dior and of course my L’Oreal Shines. Easy to wear and in the case of the Dior, they leave a nice stain behind.
I definitely don’t need any more lipsticks, but I’m curious to test these out! The ingredient list is definitely very different; notably, they eliminated many of the fragrances/citrus essential oils that were in the older version. Barbarella looks gorgeous!
I was ambivalent about the change in formula because Dolce Vita was my first “grown-up” lipstick and the scent always brought me back to that excitement of discovering the world of makeup. However, when I realized how many citrus oils were in the original version, I’m hopeful that these lipsticks will be a bit less irritating and more hydrating.
I absolutely love the NARS LE formula for the Erdem collaboration, and I hope the wear is the same on these. So many gorgeous colors.
I really get offense for names from certain cultures…when in that culture’s domain. My nickname when a girl, when I was carefree, from relatives actually coming from that area, was Gypsy….I also respect others being sensitive to it. As an FYI, via different dialect…the real offense was the various translations/slang of “travelers”. Kind of like “fag” is hugely derogatory here in the US, but other parts of the world, it’s just a cigarette.
My buddy from New Orleans calls me a Hefer…aka cow…but there it is totally a term of endearment. I’d be really offended if he told me “bless your heart”.
I’m just explaining my perspective…not trying to offend at all.
Soooo, unless the company is from that area, I am going to leave myself open to fab…and I do love Gypsy. I love the colors before and after but I will swatch. I love sheers, especially in the winter when glosses don’t work. I’m too old to rock a matte lip.
Just putting that out there for food for thought.
I think brands have a big responsibility and we have to hold them accountable for what they say. NARS provokes on purpose as a marketing strategy. I’d say they revel in provoking people into having these conversations because “no publicity is bad publicity” and that is distasteful to me.
the shade is so beautiful though! It would have been my pick
Today I noticed that Sephora has G*psy listed as Gipsy so I checked the NARS and it has it listed at Gipsy too. Maybe they listened? One can always hope. Thanks again for calling them out!
But hopefully next time they put a little more thought into it because Gipsy is still problematic.
It’s always been used with an I, but as far as I’m aware, that doesn’t make it better (like dictionary.com means the g*psy with a Y).
