I like 2-3 shades for things like lipsticks, glosses, eyeshadows, and so on. For something like blush, two is ideal, because I like when brands release opposite tones (cool/warm) or ranges (one that is more suitable for lighter complexions, another for deeper). I want there to be something for everyone, but I don’t want it to be overwhelming! I think a total of 8-12 shades is good.

Not too many! if they do couple of things in each category and do it really well with unique colors and finishes, its a winner!
I like to see at least 4 lipsticks with matching glosses, 3-4 eyeshadows and maybe 2 blushes. I like bigger collections for the variety but sometimes I do get a little overwhelmed and feel the need to buy everything lol. I also prefer to have a collection work for all skin tones like you mentioned. It’s frustrating sometimes when companies repeatedly release collections that are only suitable for pale to medium skin tones
4-5 single eyeshadows or 2 duos or 1 palette
2 lipsticks
2 glosses
2 blushes
1 bronzer/illuminator/highlighter
I like compact and tight the seasonal collections; about 5 to 10 pieces. Chanel, Nars, Dior, Illamasqua tend to be good examples. Rarely am I going to pick up an entire collection. I want the collection to inspire me not overwhelm me. I’m looking for a few key pieces to give me (and my existing stash) a fresh take on the season. Me, I get so bored with all cool or all warm themes–they can also be limiting–because rarely do I wear makeup with that thought in mind While, I like a co-ordinated look, many times the matchy matchy temperature thing falls flat for me and lacks a spark of interest . I do think it is absolutely more important to cover a broader skin tone base in collections. I think NARS does a fabulous job. Chanel, maybe not so much.
When a seasonal collection releases products for the face I would really appreciate if they have products that suit medium to darker tones. Many companies don’t do this and I find it very disappointing. For example bronzers in a collection, believe it or not medium and darker tones like to wear bronzer. At least 2 shades for each tone, at least. All together about 10-12 shades or more u can never have too many shades of color because everyone’s different.
I think I’d find 12-14 to give a good range, specifically looking at 4 lipsticks (warm to cool, dark to lighter), 2 blushes, 3 eyeshadows, 2-3 glosses, and if the eyeliners/mascaras are unique colours, 2-3. I feel like that give a good number to work with and enough items to give a range of light/dark/warm/cool.
I don’t feel liners and mascaras are necessary in a collection unless they are new/unique, as most people have a pretty good selection or colours they are happy with.
I agree with everyone – a couple of things in each category. But I also don’t mind small collections that just contain a blush, eye palette or duo, nail varnish, etc.
I like it when there are lots of lipsticks and glosses interesting colours, so I’m a little biased in that direction 😛 The thing for me is that there aren’t too many things that are effectively dupes of permanent items, or repromotes, that there’s a good selection (maybe 10 items in total) and that if they’re going to do a bright/avant garde colour, they do it properly (i.e. don’t just make it sheer and weird).
I like your answer. It’s really nice when they come out with at least 3 shades and create both a warm and cool version for everyone, and possibly the LE thing could be a totally irrevocablly amazing neutral multi-use item for everyone! Options, but not the kitchen sink. 😀 Maybelline’s summer is pretty. Well, some of it. I’d personally lke to be able to say, all of it is lovely and unique this year, every year! LOVE TO ALL MOMS! Stila or not… Thanks for the sale ups!
Sorry to go off topic, but I’ve learned today that I must get glasses and I’d love advice!!!!! I enjoy tight-lining & great mascara on my massive lashes! I’m not bragging! Please know I feel gratitude and blessed to have them & had lost many giving birth that Talika grew back, but glasses catch them! I get that I have to have to have special rounded lenses made, but what kind of frames should I go for? My wild hormonal skin that I’m finally calming down is beginning to look like it did when I was 18 again.. and I don’t want to hide my face! I’m enjoying it again! Have/does anyone go through this? No, contacts aren’t an option for this thing. 🙁 I’m sorry for going off topic again, but many were so helpful before, I’d like to put this out there because I believe others would want the same if they had also had a new beauty dilemma, which, if I could be of any help, I’d do what I can! My deep thanks in advance! Muah! <3 Lotus
not sure if this helps but I’ve been wearing glasses since I was a preteen (25+ years). I found it best to go with frames that suit your face shape and personal style, not something that’s super trendy and will be out dated in a year, unless you can afford new glasses that often. I like my frames to be able to work with various outfits and hairstyles. Try on every pair of frames if you have to! And bring someone with you that knows you and will give you an honest opinion. After all, you’re gonna have to wear em every day.
As for makeup, I don’t know if you curl your lashes?? I find my glasses have a tendency to slip down my nose (i have a narrow bridge) so the lashes don’t usually become an issue. And I curl – every day. I find it necessary to do my brows so my eyes/face doesn’t get lost behind the frames.
Hi Brenda! Thank you so much for the advice! I agree that going with the face shape and sticking to one pair which will work with mostly everything is key! I’m glad you suggested that as well! As for my lashes, they are so long that they hit my eyebrows, and when I wear mascara, people think they’re fake. (Not complaining, I’m thankful) So, as far as I know, I have to ask that lenses be rounded so I can blink easily. I love the groomed brows tip! You’re dialed in for sure! So how do you also make your eyes stand out with frames on? (I’m afraid of losing that & googling like a maniac.) I REALLY appreciate your kindness to help me, thank you again! If anything else comes to mind, please let me know! 🙂 <3, Lotus xo
