I think the only magazine I sometimes read these days is Fetch or something like that, which is a magazine from my dog’s insurance provider. I just didn’t find myself reaching for any, so I’ve let subscriptions run out. If I wanted beauty, though, I’d turn to Allure probably! My favorite type of section/article is any time a celebrity reveals what’s in their makeup bag or what they use – it is always interesting (assuming they are not a spokesperson for a brand).
Thanks to Lauren for today’s question! Do you have a question idea? Submit yours here.
I usually dont read any fashion magazine.. but Cosmopolitan and Vogue would be my pick.. 🙂
I’m a fan of Allure as well! I find whenever I pick up fashion magazines, my first read through I tend to skim straight to the beauty section. Allure is perfect because it’s all beauty!
Ha! Before you mentioned that Fetch was a pet magazine, I thought it was named after the phrase in Mean Girls. LOL!!!
Cosmopolitan for over 30 years…but it has gone down hill.
U.S. Weekly whenever it gets sent to me free at the office…”What’s in my Bag?”….Love It.
When I was subscribed to “W,” it was my absolute favorite magazine to read, not just because of the beauty section (they teased me with news of the MAC x Rodarte collection which never came out), because of the beautiful photographs on the huge, glossy pages. I still have all of the issues I received saved in stacks…I need to organize…
If “Wired” had a beauty section, that would be marvelous.
Oh my god, that would be the best D:
W magazine produces great eye candy! 🙂
Happie Nuts… It’s a Japanese women’s fashion magazine. I LOVE seeing what all of the charisma models carry in their makeup bags. I also like to read the sections on how to recreate their infamous looks. 🙂
Allure and In Style.
BUST magazine is fantastic! All about the ladies. Lots of interesting, thought-provoking articles about women.
Allure, Vogue and Lucky
I like the “best of” issues where readers and editors pick their top choices for the year. I also like articles about seasonal trends.
I enjoy Jean Godfrey-June’s column on beauty in Lucky because I enjoy her voice, and I believe that’s about it. Since the beauty blog explosion a few years ago, I find beauty sections (and pretty much all of Allure) to be pretty lacking. They give very little advance information about upcoming products, everything that’s featured is absolutely the best thing that’s they’ve ever used, reviews are doled out in tiny little snippets (it’s a magazine! Write more, not 100 words or fewer!) and frequently just by some random person (“we went to Thusandsuch Bar to ask how they liked…”, and the writing just isn’t sharp. Furthermore, if they’re going to feature a brand, show me twenty of their products and why I should give the brand a try, show me swatches on a range of different skin colors so I can see how it behaves, and show us exactly how the editorial makeup looks were achieved. I want to see if it’s some wacky to-the-trade brand, or Wet-n-Wild plus Vaseline; don’t show me the same lipstick on eight different pages and tell me it’s eight different colors.
I have lots more thoughts on magazines. I miss buying magazines and wish their quality wasn’t so lacking relative to the free blogs I can read.
I completely agree. Jean Godfrey-June is a standout. The Beauty section of Lucky should be its own magazine, in my opinion!
And I honestly get so tired of seeing only the L’Oreal and Estee Lauder brands in every article in Allure. There are so many other great brands out there that deserve recognition! It is very misleading.
I also enjoy People Style Watch’s beauty section, as they are really good at showing the products/techniques used on celebrities. That’s always fun. And they provide a good mix of high-end and low-end products, too.
Completely agreed–I flip to the Beauty section first to read Jean Godfrey-June’s article in Lucky. All the other articles in that mag can be hit-or-miss but her own voice is always something to look forward to. But yeah, for the most part, beauty bloggers are much better with reviews than those little tiny annoying snippets.
Allure sometimes has articles/interviews with mini-celebrities and what they use on site with their job. I look forward to these way more than hearing about hot-shot celebrities and their makeup bags. Some memorable one’s:
-what the Rockettes use to get their hair to stay like iron
-what pro cheerleaders use when they have to be outdoors cheering for freezing or melting temperatures
-what female sailors use for their winter regimen
-what synchronized swimmers use for their makeup look
Allure also has an annual “naked” issue available around summer that talks about beauty and skincare for the entire BODY–not just face and hair. I always keep an eye out for that issue.
The only magazine I read is the online Into the Gloss, which includes interviews with models, designers, etc. in addition to product reviews. Their article with Dita Von Teese is a favorite of mine. 🙂
I’m not really one for magazines, but I do have a subscription to the Vegetarian Times. They actually have a beauty section each month & I love seeing what natural products they are discussing.
Do people still read magazines?
I don’t subscribe to any magazines but I agree with you- I love hearing what makeup is worn by celebrities, however I find it’s hard to know what they really like vs. what they’re paid to say. I read an article about Emma Stone’s favourite makeup, and she said she loved the Revlon lash potion mascara then I remembered she’s the face of that product…
Forget magazines! Temptalia is all I need! 🙂
🙂
Agree!
Allure has been a Long time favorite and subscription of mine- reading it for some 8-9 years now, and I read it from cover to cover, so a little hard to pick a specific section!
Fetch. Awesome!!! Probably better than most of the stuff out there anyway!!!!
Aww, you used my question! That’s so cool! 🙂
InStyle and Allure are the two I read monthly. I also pick up others from time to time if they have a particularly interesting article. It’s always interesting to hear what other people enjoy reading each month.
None. I prefer reading independent blogs like yours.
