Looks - Cult of Cherry Neutrals for Bold Lips

On Wednesday, I thought I might play around with some bold lip colors, so I popped on a neutral look, and then I had some fun. I tried Bing! mattene from Cult of Cherry, as well as So Scarlet (but I already had an idea of how that’d turn out in a look). I also tried on Clinique’s Red-y to Wear. Now, the verdict? Neither Bing nor Red-y to Wear are for me. I just can’t see where I’d wear Bing out to, without lightening it some. Red-y to Wear is too much of an orangey red on me – reminds me of clown red, almost.

You will need the following…

  • Eyes: Soft Ochre paint pot (creamy neutral base), Next To Nothing eyeshadow (cool neutral), Tempting eyeshadow (bronze brown), Dark Edge eyeshadow (cool dark brown), Ricepaper eyeshadow (soft neutral highlighter), Orpheus kohl power (black gold), Plushlash mascara (black)
  • Cheeks: Dainty mineralize blush (soft peachy pink)
  • Lips: So Scarlet lipstick (deep red), Jampacked lipglass (dark berry)
  • Brushes: 266 (firm, angled brush), 249 (flat, firm brush), 239 (fluffy shadow brush), 129 (dense blush brush)
  • Substitutes: Next to Nothing = Shroom; Dark Edge = Smut; Orpheus = Buried Treasure; Dainty = Peachykeen; So Scarlet = New York Apple; Jampacked = Desire

Directions: Define brows using a coordinating powder shadow applied with the 266 brush. Apply Soft Ochre paint pot all over the lid as the base with the 249. Apply Next to Nothing eyeshadow all over the lid using the 239. Apply Apply Tempting eyeshadow on outer lid and into crease with the 239. Darken the outer crease using Dark Edge eyeshadow using the 239. Sweep Ricepaper underneath the brow bone to highlight. Finish with Orpheus kohl power on lower lash line, and Plushlash mascara on lashes. Sweep apples of cheeks with Dainty using the 129. Apply So Scarlet lipstick to lips, and then top with Jampacked lipglass for color and shine.

Here is the “experiment” portion! First two are with Bing mattene and Jampacked lipglass. The last two are with Clinique’s Red-y to Wear and MAC’s Boundless 3D glass.

And when all was said and done…

Had to tone the lips down 😉

Lovely! I’m sure I’ll have to get Bing now 😀 I also love the neutral eye and it’s amazing how different Dainty looks with different lip colors! I think the dark lipstick really brings out a berry-pink nuance (looks more like Gentle than Dainty to me actually), but maybe it’s just my imagination lol

Bing looks really nice. I find the best way to wear super dark (or super brown) lipsticks to to keep the complection really warm with a warm blush, that and keep the eye makeup to a minimum.

I actually really like all 3 on you 🙂 Bing is dramatic but it works! It may not be what you’re used to, but it really is a good fall look especially with your neutral eye makeup.

I thought that there was a company out there that made a product to tone down dark lipstick? Does anyone have a clue what I am talking about? I swear I’m not hallucinating!

You are very much a So Scarlett girl.. it looks gorgeous on you! I also like the toned down version of your lips.. it goes really nice with the eye makeup.

I think that the other colors are a bit too strong for the neutral eye… but that’s just my opinion. You look so refreshingly pretty and sweet with neutral colors, the dark lipstick makes you look more edgy.
As always, the makeup is so beautifully applied.. there are no flaws! I wish I could do the same, I keep practicing.
Have a great weekend girls!

You could totally pull off Bing. Of course, if you’re uncomfortable wearing it, it won’t work, but the color itself looks great on you. Red-y to Wear might work with a simpler eye, maybe just a sweep of something nude (MAC Nanogold or Stila Kitten maybe?) and top-only black liner and mascara.

Regardless, Bing and So Scarlett both look great! Thanks for sharing the looks with us.

I’d wear Bing to work. 😀 With a neutral eye, neutral outfit, and low-key jewelry, of course. But I haven’t yet met a big bold lipstick I wouldn’t wear any place, any time. My lips are my primary accessory.

Really, all lipstick goes everywhere. And Bing really, really pops on you. If not it, then maybe Diva. I’m working up the guts (also, camera skills) to send you a shot of it. I chickened out of your red lips feature. I own about 10 different bright reds. Bing looks more purple than Diva, which has a redder undertone.

Christine – have you tried cult of cherry lip glass with bing? I have better luck with that combo – actually cult of cherry lipglass looks fab over all the mattenes. I’m getting double back-ups on that one 🙂

Ahhhhh I cannot WAIT for Cult of Cherry!!! Bing is probably too dark for me, but I’m going to go crazzzyyyy with my wishlist of stuff…

You seriously need to reconsider the read-y to wear! I love it on u….more than so scarlett…didn’t feel Bing all that much, u look like…a goth girl…so if ur going for that look then u cud so do bing…but i loved the clinique on u. u shud reconsider not wearing it!

Christine, I agree that Bing is the best on you. I also agree with Sarah. I think that to pull off dark lips, you have to really keep the eyes simple (only one light wash w/liner) and keep the blush to an absolute minimum. It may not be a look you’re comfortable with right now, but I think it would be gorgeous.

I’m also a wear everywhere dark-lipped chick.

I think So Scarlet and Bing were your best colours, definitely. Especially Bing, it’s a little goth but it totallly works on you. I’m not so sure about the Clinique Red-y to Wear, a little too…I don’t really know.
You look best with vampy colours.
By the way you could probably wear colours like that to parties, clubs, maybe even just on a day when you’re feelng confident or something. And I agree with Kellye, simplify the eyes.

I’ve yet to see ONE person who looks good in Bing (no offence hun) it just reminds me of reptile lips, like snake lips or something. And you’re right about the clownish red- No no NO! But the first red is so lovely on you, and of course your neutral lip too.

This reminds me of when everyone was wearing that disgusting yellow nail polish, from neo sci fi I think, can’t remember, but it was literally gross like granny toe nail colour. MAC do turn us into fashion victims don’t they?! I’m all for red lips, love them all year round in fact. But goth lips are never going to catch on. (I’ll still be trying on Bing though in store haha!)
