Lipstick Queen Let Them Eat Cake Lipstick Review, Photos, Swatches
Lipstick Queen Let Them Eat Cake Lipstick
Lipstick Queen Let Them Eat Cake Lipstick ($45.00 for 0.12 oz.) is described as a “delicate lilac … shot through with sugary sparkles.” It’s a light-medium, pink-lilac with gold shimmer and sparkle. The base color is semi-sheer, while the amount of shimmer makes the overall result more semi-opaque. Revlon Cotton Candy (P, $7.49) is sheerer, less glittery. NYX Castle (P, $4.00) is less glittery, more opaque, darker. Chanel Charme (P, $34.00) is less shimmery. See comparison swatches / view dupes.
The formula is supposed to be comfortable to wear, hydrating, and have a “soft focus” effect due to the finish. It can be worn alone or applied over your favorite lipstick as a “top coat.” The texture of the lipstick is similar to other highly metallic, highly frosted formulas; it glides on without tugging, but there’s a slight feel of the texture from the amount of shimmer/sparkle. I wouldn’t describe it as gritty or rough, but it’s not perfectly smooth or creamy. What’s remarkable about the formula is that it doesn’t dry out lips, as high frosts often do, though it is only a little hydrating over the long-haul. The sparkle doesn’t migrate too noticeably, but there were a few stray gold flecks outside of the lip after the four hours it lasted. The sparkles can sometimes catch on the natural lip, so I would recommend exfoliating prior to give it a smoother surface to adhere to. Worn, it’s very sparkly, reflective, and catches the light beautifully, but it’s not the most comfortable lipstick/formula I’ve come across. The packaging has a lot of heft to it, but all of the heft is in the case/top, while the actual tube component feels very light and plastic-like. I didn’t notice any scent or taste to the formula.

Ack, the frost.
Yeah, if you don’t LOVE frost, this one wasn’t designed for you, lol!
No! It’s “Yay! The frost!” Haha I love frosty lipsticks! The feistier the better! But I mix almost everything so I like extremes 🙂 I really like the texture if a lot of the Lipstick Queen lipsticks… but I’ve experienced mold with them so I don’t use them anymore. Could be due to them being a more “natural” product I suppose? Maybe they just go out at night while I’m sleeping and sleeze it up on the town… come home will all kinda of social diseases… I donno. This is pretty tho!
Now I’ll be checking on mine in a few months to see how they hold up…
How long did they seem to last before molding on you?
Yikes, they get mold????
I have 8-year old MAC lipsticks that still smell fine! And no mold whatsoever.
I also have old lipsticks, MAC and others. I check them once a year, if they still smell as they should and the texture is fine, I keep and use them.
I’ve so far never had a moldy one, that sounds really disgusting.
I like this lipstick, but I don’t think I’ll buy it at that price.
YESSS! My exact reaction. Dustin! I love you!!! Thanks to you I’ve been maaaadly into frosts. Nothing looks better to me with a smudgy grungy eyeliner or smoky eyes. Thanks!!!
Thank you Christine for your review!
That’s really funny. + NOT funny haha. Longtime fan of Poppy King. Still have her 7 deadly sins + not one of them is bad. think they came out in ’90. What I do have trouble with is NARS semi-matte + often the rubberized matte packaging deteriorates before the product. Had to depot an endless buncha palettes, including his first one ever, with no color labels, + none of the lippies have turned. single lippies have gone in ~3 yrs. I don’t toss as recommended, unless they go for smell or texture. Lots of Dior crapped out from the outside in w/ MAJOR discoloration. But I never got MOLD. eeeeyuck! Sounds like New Orleans or a similar climate may be the culprit. I took to putting Nars lippies in the fridge + letting them warm before app. You could try that. None of the poppy saint/sinner/ medieval have gone bad, either, so it’s probably not heavy preservative in the oldies that gave them their staying power.
OMG! I used to have some of the original Poppy lipsticks, too! (wish i kept them). I think that Envy was my favourite.
Ahhh the ’90’s, seems like yesterday…..
Want this SO, SO, SO BAD!!!!!
It’s very sparkly!
Love the gold and pink combo but that texture would dive me nuts. lol
I can totally see this texture not being for everyone! It’s interesting and fun to wear, though! 😉
Love that the box is flocked as well. lol
The closeup looks beautiful and sort of arty, but from the full face picture, it just looks too sparkly somehow. I sort of love it, but at the same time…disco ball!!
It’s prettier in person since you can see it reflect and catch the light “in action” rather than flat on, lol! Like more similar to the close-up.
Love it!!! But wow, so expensive. 🙁
Yes, very pricey!
Am I reading this correctly? $45.00? No way!
Yep, $45!
Not a huge fan of the insane amount of frost, but this is definitely a brand I’ll have to check out!
Hope you find something that tempts you!
yeah i’m totally in the camp that doesn’t usually go for frosty frosty but whoa…MUST. RESIST. TEH SPARKLIES.
or not. ;D
Haha! 😉
I want this so much *_* FROST *_* probably one of the few ladies on earth who adore that amount of shimmer?? ahah 😀
When done right, it can be really fun 😀 Personally, I find this one has just enough color that it doesn’t wash me out and still has a real cool sparkly, frosted effect.
I think this would be a really cool looking top coat for a dark purple or deep berry/wine lipstick, but $45…yikes!
I wish it wasn’t quite so expensive – I feel like it is a fun lipstick but maybe not an every day shade for most (but interesting enough to consider!).
Eek, frost overload… Not my cup of tea. Or my slice of cake 😉
Haha!
$45 dollar for a lipstick, ugh. Am I gonna buy it? Probably 🙁
Well, I hope you love it dearly then 🙂
I usually hate frosty lipsticks but the combination of the color and packaging is making me absolutely love this <3
It is very pretty!
This looks so nice!
Kind of like MAC Bombshell I think 🙂
Kind of!
I saw the price and went wow….they better have gold flakes in that lipstick. Yeah it’s a pretty color but how can they justify charging $45 for a lipstick?
Branding, supposed quality of ingredients, packaging, etc. Just like any high-end or luxury product, whether cars or makeup, brand plays a huge role.
Aw, this reminds me of an old Wet n Wild shade I wore almost non-stop in the late 80’s. I loved it because it made my lips look bigger. I may have to pick this up just for old times sake. That or see if the WnW shade is still around…
Might be worth seeing if Wet ‘n’ Wild has one, if only because it would be nearly 1/45th the cost, lol!
OMG not you too.. dies laughing…
I like it, it looks good on you 🙂 She often appears on QVC with specials and sales. I’m going to watch for it there.
Fingers crossed it makes a QVC debut!
That is frost city but I think I might like it anyway!
It is a fun color!
Stunning lipstick. I really would like to get it.
Is it true this is only at Barney’s?
It is a Barney’s exclusive!
LOL..I’m having makeup flashbacks to the 80’s. I wore a very similar shade to a absolute death in my 20’s and shudder..now evidence: too many photos with that lipstick on. I think it was actually even frostier.. (giggling to myself). I’ll take a pass. Been there, done it and while I do like frosts, they have to be a lot more subtle.
LOL! 😉
Hm, I love Charme (my wedding lipstick <3), so I feel this frostgasm version is a little superfluous for me 😉 Still, I think the look of the lipstick, both on the lips and in the tube, works so well with the name – that really pleases me ^_^.
It’s a fun, sparkling shade 🙂
Not a fan of it on the lips, but the color in the tube is AMAZING. It would be a really pretty polish!
You can also use it as a topper on a lipstick or add gloss to make it less frosted (more sparkly)!
wow i like this and the box is too cute
It is nice that the packaging matches the theme!
Tthis is undeniably gorgeous, but I’ve seen this color in every high & low end brand. I still enjoy looking! 🙂
Lucky for you 🙂
Haha! I meant that this color is easily attainable! 🙂 Lucky for everyone! 😀
That is gorgeous. Any idea if there are parabens in the formula? Some of her lipsticks have them and some don’t.
No idea! I looked for the ingredients when I was photographing the box but couldn’t find them. It was odd that they weren’t on there.
Ah, it might have been on the very bottom of the box rather than on the sides. I’ve found that some companies are doing that now. I emailed Lipstick Queen and hope they’ll get back to me with the ingredients!
What an odd color. I can’t decide if I like it or not.
It is one of those kinds of colors, lol!
Do you think this is comparable to Revlon’s Rose & Shine? It reminds me so much of it!
I don’t think I have that shade!
I love this, so much, but not at that price! If it wasn’t LE, I’d wait until I had a bunch of Ulta points and see if they got it in. 🙁
It’s supposed to be a Barneys exclusive, so I don’t know if Ulta will get it at any point (sometimes they’re just exclusive for a period of time). LipstickQueen.com had it, too, I believe. 🙁
Oh, this reminds me of my beloved, long-lost Aristo-cat! I would much rather still have that lipstick than spend $45 on this one, though… (why the hell is it $45?!)
I have no idea, really. Lipstick Queen’s pricing is all over the map for the one-off shades it seems!
WOW I didn’t catch the price tag until I read the comments! I hope to see more Lipstick Queen reviews as it’s a brand I’m greatly interested in… 🙂
LOL! I was kind of like, “Why is the shade I end up featuring the $45 one?”
I’m loving the color, but how do you feel it would look on dark skin? [9/10 in the Urban Decay Foundation]. I want it, but I’m a little afraid it’s going to be to light for me.
I could see it possibly washing you out (combination of lightness + frostiness) — have you worn any shades like MAC Lavender Whip or Creme de la Femme at all?
So pretty! I gravitate towards shimmer in any shape or form haha
I had no idea Lipstick Queen was so expensive though! I’ve also never heard about lipsticks getting mold on them. How long do lipsticks usually stay good for?
I believe the guidelines for lipstick is usually two years, but it can depend on the brand and formula, and of course, many people don’t follow those guidelines!
How similar is this to Rimmel Moisture are new in “Fancy” or Maybelline ColorSensational in “Born with It”?
I don’t think I have Fancy! Born With It is a lot pinker, lighter, more beige, and doesn’t have sparkle/glitter.
Glad to see your first Lipstick Queen review!
Alas, I may not be able to pull off this particular shade.
I really like your blog, Christine. Thank you for putting so much time and effort into your reviews. Temptalia is the first place I go to when considering a product.
Thank you so much, Yen Lin!!
Hey! I think you have $22 listed as the price when you click on the dupes etc. I wish it was only $22 (sigh)
Thanks, Karen! Lipstick Queen is breaking our system, LOL! There’s no… formula? for these in a sense? Like it’s just “lipstick,” so when I added Jungle Queen, it overwrote the pricing for this one. They’re two separate entries now, though very redundant, lol!
Why so expensive? Are her lipsticks comparable, to say Tom Ford, to justify such a high price. I LOVE this shade but WOW! 🙂
Tom Ford’s lipsticks aren’t really better than a $20 or $30 lipsticks that I’ve tried, so I don’t think that the formula of either brand “justifies” the price, it’s more the branding/packaging, I guess!
Would you say Mac courting lilac is a dupe?
Courting Lilac would be purpler!
Lipstick Queen is a brand that I have been curious about for a while, so I’m glad to see some reviews!
Happy to share!
Looks great! Another dupe could be Pink Quartz by Maybelline (Color Sensational). They both share that frosty sparkly finish 🙂
Thank you for the rec!
Where do I buy this in Canada ? Sephora ?
I’m not sure – I know that it is a Barney’s exclusive, so I don’t know if it there’s a particular Canadian retailer for it.
How about MAC Fabby for a dupe? How similar are these two?
Fabby is similar – this is more glittery/sparkly, a bit lighter and warmer.
