Lipstick Queen Let Them Eat Cake Lipstick ($45.00 for 0.12 oz.) is described as a “delicate lilac … shot through with sugary sparkles.” It’s a light-medium, pink-lilac with gold shimmer and sparkle. The base color is semi-sheer, while the amount of shimmer makes the overall result more semi-opaque. Revlon Cotton Candy (P, $7.49) is sheerer, less glittery. NYX Castle (P, $4.00) is less glittery, more opaque, darker. Chanel Charme (P, $34.00) is less shimmery. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

The formula is supposed to be comfortable to wear, hydrating, and have a “soft focus” effect due to the finish. It can be worn alone or applied over your favorite lipstick as a “top coat.” The texture of the lipstick is similar to other highly metallic, highly frosted formulas; it glides on without tugging, but there’s a slight feel of the texture from the amount of shimmer/sparkle. I wouldn’t describe it as gritty or rough, but it’s not perfectly smooth or creamy. What’s remarkable about the formula is that it doesn’t dry out lips, as high frosts often do, though it is only a little hydrating over the long-haul. The sparkle doesn’t migrate too noticeably, but there were a few stray gold flecks outside of the lip after the four hours it lasted. The sparkles can sometimes catch on the natural lip, so I would recommend exfoliating prior to give it a smoother surface to adhere to. Worn, it’s very sparkly, reflective, and catches the light beautifully, but it’s not the most comfortable lipstick/formula I’ve come across. The packaging has a lot of heft to it, but all of the heft is in the case/top, while the actual tube component feels very light and plastic-like. I didn’t notice any scent or taste to the formula.

No! It’s “Yay! The frost!” Haha I love frosty lipsticks! The feistier the better! But I mix almost everything so I like extremes 🙂 I really like the texture if a lot of the Lipstick Queen lipsticks… but I’ve experienced mold with them so I don’t use them anymore. Could be due to them being a more “natural” product I suppose? Maybe they just go out at night while I’m sleeping and sleeze it up on the town… come home will all kinda of social diseases… I donno. This is pretty tho!

I also have old lipsticks, MAC and others. I check them once a year, if they still smell as they should and the texture is fine, I keep and use them.
I’ve so far never had a moldy one, that sounds really disgusting.
I like this lipstick, but I don’t think I’ll buy it at that price.

YESSS! My exact reaction. Dustin! I love you!!! Thanks to you I’ve been maaaadly into frosts. Nothing looks better to me with a smudgy grungy eyeliner or smoky eyes. Thanks!!!

Thank you Christine for your review!

That’s really funny. + NOT funny haha. Longtime fan of Poppy King. Still have her 7 deadly sins + not one of them is bad. think they came out in ’90. What I do have trouble with is NARS semi-matte + often the rubberized matte packaging deteriorates before the product. Had to depot an endless buncha palettes, including his first one ever, with no color labels, + none of the lippies have turned. single lippies have gone in ~3 yrs. I don’t toss as recommended, unless they go for smell or texture. Lots of Dior crapped out from the outside in w/ MAJOR discoloration. But I never got MOLD. eeeeyuck! Sounds like New Orleans or a similar climate may be the culprit. I took to putting Nars lippies in the fridge + letting them warm before app. You could try that. None of the poppy saint/sinner/ medieval have gone bad, either, so it’s probably not heavy preservative in the oldies that gave them their staying power.

OMG! I used to have some of the original Poppy lipsticks, too! (wish i kept them). I think that Envy was my favourite.
Ahhh the ’90’s, seems like yesterday…..

The closeup looks beautiful and sort of arty, but from the full face picture, it just looks too sparkly somehow. I sort of love it, but at the same time…disco ball!!

amy Avatar

yeah i’m totally in the camp that doesn’t usually go for frosty frosty but whoa…MUST. RESIST. TEH SPARKLIES.

or not. ;D

I saw the price and went wow….they better have gold flakes in that lipstick. Yeah it’s a pretty color but how can they justify charging $45 for a lipstick?

Aw, this reminds me of an old Wet n Wild shade I wore almost non-stop in the late 80’s. I loved it because it made my lips look bigger. I may have to pick this up just for old times sake. That or see if the WnW shade is still around…

I like it, it looks good on you 🙂 She often appears on QVC with specials and sales. I’m going to watch for it there.

LOL..I’m having makeup flashbacks to the 80’s. I wore a very similar shade to a absolute death in my 20’s and shudder..now evidence: too many photos with that lipstick on. I think it was actually even frostier.. (giggling to myself). I’ll take a pass. Been there, done it and while I do like frosts, they have to be a lot more subtle.

Ah, it might have been on the very bottom of the box rather than on the sides. I’ve found that some companies are doing that now. I emailed Lipstick Queen and hope they’ll get back to me with the ingredients!

I love this, so much, but not at that price! If it wasn’t LE, I’d wait until I had a bunch of Ulta points and see if they got it in. 🙁

Glad to see your first Lipstick Queen review!
Alas, I may not be able to pull off this particular shade.
I really like your blog, Christine. Thank you for putting so much time and effort into your reviews. Temptalia is the first place I go to when considering a product.

Christine Avatar

Thanks, Karen! Lipstick Queen is breaking our system, LOL! There’s no… formula? for these in a sense? Like it’s just “lipstick,” so when I added Jungle Queen, it overwrote the pricing for this one. They’re two separate entries now, though very redundant, lol!

Linda Avatar

Why so expensive? Are her lipsticks comparable, to say Tom Ford, to justify such a high price. I LOVE this shade but WOW! 🙂

Yoko Avatar

Looks great! Another dupe could be Pink Quartz by Maybelline (Color Sensational). They both share that frosty sparkly finish 🙂
