Is there a such thing as too young for makeup?

Is there a such thing as too young for makeup? How old were you when you first started wearing makeup? Were you allowed?

.

I had a friend do makeup on me a few times when I was in my early teens, but I wasn’t actually allowed to wear make-up growing up. I really didn’t wear it until I was 18!

Thanks to Chess for this question!

oh and i was around 14 when i started buying mac, i only wore the lipglass though, wearing glitter on your eyes was the thing in my high school days lol. i was maybe 17-ish when i started actually wearing make-up all the time

Kaylabella Avatar

I started playing with my Grandma’s lipstick and nail polish when I was around 4. She didn’t mind that I wore it at all, only other people really cared. I think the only makeup I was ever “not allowed” to wear was mascara until I turned some age, I don’t remember, but everything else was fine, even though it all looked pretty tacky now that I look back!

johnfiend Avatar

I was watching Housewives of New Jersey – and one of the mothers had her 7 year old in bright red lipstick, blue eyeshadow.. the works. it was HORRENDOUS! Personally I think late teens is age appropiate for anyone to start wearing make up on a regular basis. I was 19 when I started WEARING make-up as opposed to playing with it (i.e. before a shower, or just in my room to see what looks work etc.)

Melly Avatar

I started when I was 13. Now, I kind of regret it. I feel like I could have spent those 10 extra minutes sleeping, or i don’t know… studying? It has been over 6 years and I still love makeup. Yes, my parents didn’t really care that I wore makeup because it was just cheap drugstore eyeliner and smackers lip gloss 🙂

Anastasia Avatar

I think young children just shouldn’t have to worry about it. Something about caring about your appearance should be reserved for when you’re older and you’d think twice about running around outside in your pants, covered in chocolate sauce or taking a stuffed toy with you to the shops.

I wasn’t interested in make-up until I was 20, but my mother bought me tinted moisturiser when I was in high school, so I wouldn’t get picked on. It didn’t work, but props for trying.

Taylor Avatar

My mom always wore make-up, so it was always around the house and I cannot remember every hearing her or my dad telling me ‘no.’ She is actually the one that helped me when I first asked about it but I never really got into (aka addicted) to make-up until I turned 18.

Christine Avatar

I don’t think so. I think there’s only good makeup and bad makeup. I’ve been wearing nail polish for as long as I can remember and when I was 9, I bought hello kitty blue eyeshadow with my allowance money.

Bad makeup at 9 = blue eyeshadow.
Good makeup at 9 = powder to control shine, subtle peachy coral blush and sheer liptint.

That said, the blue eyeshadow is bad makeup for me at any age.

Anitacska Avatar

Powder to control shine at 9? That’s ridiculous! If children wear make up at that age it should be for fun, for playing with colours or trying out mum’s lipstick, not controlling shine and hiding blemishes!

Vijaya Avatar

Totally agreed. At that age, I frankly see no use for any of that, or even nude makeup, really. The latter I can understand, because there are always those who prefer it, but foundation, concealer, all of that feels like it’s going into the territory of having a little girl feeling she’s not pretty enough on her own, instead of having childish fun with bright things.

Bridgette Avatar

I feel like there is when it comes to how old and how much make you put on. I have seen 13 year old girls wearing a loads of make up on. Foundation, eyeshadow, lipstick, mascara, the whole 9 yards. Now I consider that too young to wear that much of make up. But if you were 13 and wearing just clear lipgloss then it wouldn’t be a problem. I know I might confuse people but its a bit complicated to explain.

Melinda Avatar

I was about 13 yrs of course back then it was pretty youngh ! My mom let me wear mascara lippy’s and some times eye liner 😀 those where the days oxox I think if worn right (moderate) I would say 12 not to much tho 😀

Trisha Avatar

Well, I think it’s too young what those moms do to 4 year olds on the pageant circuit. But pre-teens? Sure, a bit of makeup is fine for school. I guess it’s up to the parents, really.

Martha Avatar

My mother encouraged me to use makeup since i was 13 i think… but it was only mascara, eyeliner and lipgloss… i used foundation and all that since i was 16… but no blush or eyeshadow.

Jessica Avatar

i think there is…i get irked seeing my 12 year old sister attempt to wear makeup….i think a decent age for starting to wear it is 15 (womanhood in Hispanic cultures)…and thats just like basic stuff maybe eyeliner and mascara…but not full-faced application…yea im a hypocrite being only 17 ha but its how you rock it and how mature you are =P 🙂

TiffanyC. Avatar

i know how you feel. this christmas my 10 year old sister got only mac products. i never got to wear make up til i was 16 (and i was the oldest girl of 4) and it was cheap stuff,my little sis even has primer potion which i dont have. but i guess they see what we have and it makes them want it too…im just glad shes not in MY make up anymore

Jessica Avatar

omg 10? ive never heard of such a thing lol and all mac and primer potion…wow your parents must really love her lol yea my older sis is the same way….she was always scared to ask but they told her no…i dont ask i just do ha

Tavia Avatar

To be honest when I first use makeup, and I’m talking only about mascara and lipgloss I was in my final year at high school so I was almost 18. When I was 25 I start using foundation for the first time, but I don’t do it very often. I can really see the difference between a girl that is using makeup since she’s 15 years old and one that it’s starting only later. Most girls at younger age don’t even respect the whole routine (remove makeup every night, cleansing, moisturizing) and that’s why after a couple of years their skin is not the same. I compared myself with my ex colleagues the one that were using makeup since first year of high school and it’s a nightmare to see them without makeup.

mia Avatar

i have to disagree most girls that are 13 do respect the taking off makeup and cleansing. most of my friends when i was 14 always did dat and our skin is much better than a person that doesn’t do dat

Leenie Avatar

I was about 15 when I started to wear makeup, and my mother did allow us girls to wear makeup and also high lights in our hair we have a cool mom

Sophie Avatar

I started dabbling with makeup in year 11, I would only wear bronzer and a bit of eyeliner though. Year 12 I got more into foundation and eyeshadow etc, but I would only wear it out to parties. I think girls younger than 16 shouldn’t be wearing makeup unless it’s lipgloss or something harmless like that. Children are growing up too fast! Young girls should just enjoy their childhood – Worry about makeup later.

SilhouetteScreams Avatar

I never really grew up with rules about wearing makeup, but when I was in my tweens + early teens I only wore lipgloss and maybe mascara anyway. Then I slowly graduated to eyeshadow (just 1 all over the lid) and eyeliner for my goth phase LOL.

It wasnt till I was 18 that I discovered that makeup was so much more than that 😀

53 Avatar

No make up allowed in school from 7 to 16. So I only started wearing eyeliner and powder to cover my dark circles when I was 18. and well it grew from there. haha. i only started collecting more when i was 20.

Melodyy Avatar

I think there is.
I don’t think people at too young of an age should be wearing it. They should still have good skin and they shouldn’t be worried about it.

nana Avatar

I wore make-up every day from 15 until I was about 19 (base, corrector and powder, mascara, pencil and gloss). My mother almost never wears make-up, she is one of those naturally gorgeous dark, warm-skinned women (I’m pale as a ghost) but she allowed it (she said it was just a faze and I should get it out of my system or I will be one of those 80 year-olds with purple hair and wrong shade of lipstick), but she insisted that I shouldn’t put bad quality stuff on my skin. After that I just wore it for special occasions and going out,and lately I like to play with colors when the spirit moves me.. I only learned how to do proper eye makeup in my late twenties, mostly thanks to internet forums, youtube and you Christine (thank you) 🙂

Mackenzie Avatar

I begged when I started the 6th grade but my parents said no. But by the end of 6th grade I was allowed to wear a little, so about 11ish.

Katrina Avatar

i’ve been playing with my mom’s makeup even before i started to school. my mom used to be a flight attendant so she was also fond of makeup. i remember on 3rd grade i had this compact blush that i always brought to school. :p and yes i was allowed by my parents to wear makeup :p

Rosanna Avatar

Makeup was only for birthdays during my childhood – it’s really funny seeing those photos because we had bright blue eyeshadow done by our moms, lol!

Makeup wasn’t really encouraged by my mom, she preferred I waited till I was 18, which I did without much resistence. She always said “You’re young, you don’t need makeup.”

Haha…My first MAC quad was when I was 15 but I wore for it like 3 days the entire year. I didn’t wear makeup till I was 17, but very, very minimal.

I think 15 is acceptable. Any younger….isn’t really needed, you need that time to see your natural self and to accept it. Otherwise they might think makeup is to cover their face faults.

Brittany Avatar

I think it’s sorta wrong for little little girls to be wearing serious makeup – like pageant girls. It makes them look WAY too fake. Young girls using makeup just to dress up in for fun is ok, but you shouldn’t dress them up to look like adults.

Andrea Avatar

Yes, there is. Makeup is a statement, just like fashion – an expression of personality – and children or pre-teens still don’t know who they are. They will just look like clowns if they start going out with makeup on their faces. Besides, why start covering up your face so early, when your skin is perfect and tight?
They may play with fake makeup at home, but shouldn’t be encouraged to start adult rituals too early.

Ribbons Avatar

Erm I think it depends on the type of make up, I dont really think a girl under 10 should be wearing proper stuff to highlight and contour like we all do now but using her mum’s make up to mess around with and practice I think is ok. My mum had a little lip palette that she used on me to draw butterflies on my cheek which meant that I thought I was wearing make up but it was more of a face paint. I started wearing proper make up when I was in high school so 11 upwards – I did it when I got to school so Mum didnt know and then at 13 I did it before I left the house, but it was really just eyemake up (2 or 3 shadows, liner and mascara) and clear lipgloss.

Trisha Mae Avatar

I started to experiment w/ eyeliners & lipgloss when I was maybe 12? I was intrigued by blue eyeliner/ mascara! Haha. There are pictures, however, when I was about 3, of me putting on Smackers lipbalm very proudly, thinking it was lipstick. Haha! I’ve loved makeup forever.♥

I think girls should have the freedom to experiment as long as they don’t get too absorbed in it & thinking they NEED it. [:

Inês Avatar

Yes!! I’ve seen way too many under-10 children wearing strong eyeshadow and lipstick 😐 Makeup should be only for over 16, imo. I started that age, and I made all the mistakes around that age XD

Sarah M Avatar

I started wearing makeup when I was 15! I wasn’t allowed to though. I’d kind of get to school and pop on some foundation that was too light for me, a little frosty white eye shadow and clumpy mascara, and icy pink ligloss with brown lip liner. It looked ridiculous. Lol. I stopped wearing makeup though and then restarted at maybe 18 or 19? My colour choice and application has much improved thankfully!

Musing On Beauty Avatar

I started wearing makeup at 12-13. My mom smartly figured that if she forbid me to do so, I would probably do what my girlfriends id: put it on at school and remove it before going back home. She thought it would be better to let me do it under her supervision 🙂

Now I think there is such thing as too young for makeup, there’s more to makeup than makeup only. Young girls wearing makeup often look older than they are, so they attract older boys and it requires maturity to be able to handle that. So I think it’s worth being cautious and if I ever have a daughter and she wants to start wearing makeup at a young age, I’ll definitely be cautious and will monitor what she’s doing.

Kitty Kris Avatar

I started using makeup when I was about 13 or 14 years of age. I used base and gloss. But some young tweens are wearing too much eyeliner and base as well as lipstick.

Salvinia Avatar

I used to play with makeup when I was a kid, but I never wore it to school or out in public or anything. When I was 12-13 my best friend was really into makeup so she got me a bit more interested in it, but I never really wore much other than lipgloss on a regular basis until I got to highschool. This might also be because when I was in junior high it was the mid 90’s and it was COMPLETELY UNACCEPTABLE to wear any colour eyeshadow besides brown. Even blush and lipcolour didn’t stray too far away from the brown family. I distinctly remember a time when I thought purple eyeshadow was something only my mother wore, I wouldn’t ever be caught dead in blue, and I didn’t even acknowledge green as an option. Well, now green is my absolute favourite colour to wear on my eyes and I wear those other colours regularly.
Anyway, back to the topic. I started wearing eyeshadow and lipstick occasionally in highschool, but I didn’t seriously get into makeup until I was around 21. Then when I was 25 I discovered MAC, and you can imagine how I feel about makeup now, haha! Oddly enough, though, I now hate lipstick.
I don’t think there’s a specific age when kids are too young to play around with makeup, since I see it as more of an art form than anything else, but they shouldn’t be wearing it in public until their parents decide they’re old enough. For me that would probably be around 13 or so, and I’d let them wear one thing at first and then gradually let them work up to doing whatever they wanted to with their face, after teaching them how, of course. I’d hold my kid up to the same standard I hold myself up to: they just have to look good, which includes looking age-appropriate!

Jo Avatar

Yes! I used to work in what I guess is what you call a drugstore? and I would see 10 year olds buying foundation!

I didn’t really wear it until I was 14 when the school uniform policy changed to allow ‘light make up’ so I would wear clear gloss, brown mascara and a bit of concealer. When I was younger my mum would put some lipstick on me for special parties and things, but nothing regularly. Even now I don’t wear full foundation; I use concealer and then even out colour with a powder.

Az Avatar

When I entered college.

I think young teens shouldnt use makeup daily because 1st no matter how they remove makeup/use skin care, it’s still bad for their immature skin. 2nd, kids should look cute & innocent & natural, just some light makeup on special occasions is enough.

Catherine Avatar

I was around 13 when I started wearing makeup. My aunt took me to a Clinique counter and I’ve been hooked ever since, although I never use Clinique anymore. I do think that 13 is a little young to wear makeup. I think maybe at least a freshman in high school, and even then only lipgloss, mascara, and concealor. Full-on makeup isn’t really necessary until 18 or so.

Alma Avatar

I first started wearing make-up when I was 13, just a bit of mascara. I started wearing more when I was 14-15. Eyeliner, blush, eyeshadow (neutrals), and mascara.

I think that your pre-teens really are too early.

dolce aria Avatar

Too young? Depends on the type of makeup.

Its never too young to play with it, but I’d seriously question the appropriateness of, say, a twelve year old wearing false lashes and red lipstick(outside a dance recital of course…)

Sarah Avatar

I started wearing foundation when I was about 14, then it gradually progessed to foundation, eyeliner and mascara, and now I wear a full face every day. I’ve worn makeup every day since I was 14. I’m now 22.

Christina Avatar

the only time i was allowed to wear makeup was prom, when my mom took me to get my makeup done my lancome. but other than that she wouldn’t let me wear makeup. she said it would mess up my skin. i started wearing makeup when i was almost 18-19 like you christine! i think my mom was right though.. i never had a pimple until i started wearing makeup or maybe it’s just a coincidence.. maybe college just stressed me out lol

DonnaN Avatar

Personally, I was permitted to wear makeup to school in 6th Grade, but even so, it was just lipgloss. I graduated to eye makeup in 8th grade, since I was in Marching Band, and we wore makeup during performances.

If I were a mom, I would leave the makeup until Jr. High….those little pagent girls with the full face makeup….they give me the willies!!

Maisie Avatar

Yes, I think there is an age where someone is too young to wear makeup. I would say that anywhere younger than 12 would be too young, and even when they are 12 girls shouldn’t really wear anymore than lipgloss and mascara. I think 13 is a good time to start experimenting with other types of makeup like eye shadow, blush, and powder. I definitely don’t think that 13 year olds need to be wearing foundation unless they have totally horrible skin, but I guess that is up to their parents.
I am 13 and my parents are okay with me wearing whatever kind of makeup I want, but it was one of my birthday presents when I turned 13. When I was 12, I wore a little bit of lipgloss and that was it.

AnaA Avatar

I was about 16 years old. But I only wore make up to go out at night when it was someone’s birthday, I didn’t wear it on a daily basis.

Actually, only this year I started wearing make up during the day (I’m 21 now)

Miss_M Avatar

I wasn’t allowed to wear make-up in my early teens either. I didn’t really care for it either since I was so busy with school and all. I started to wear make-up when I graduated highschool at 18.

I see a lot of girls who start to wear make-up at 11 or 12 years old, and to be honest, I think that is WAY too young. I can’t imagine that their parents are okay with the whole thing since these young girls look so much older than their real age.

Dorie Avatar

I didn’t start wearing makeup regularly until I was 19. Not only did my mom not allow me, but I went to a strict Catholic high school that also didn’t allow makeup. Once I got into college, and learned how, well the rest is history

Solange Avatar

I´m from Argentina and I started wearing make up when I was twelve years old. I was only allowed to use eyeliner, a little blush and my Mom´s perfume (Anais Anais) if I was going to a party. Absolutely no makeup during the day until I was seventeen.

AnGeLwInGz Avatar

I’ve always been allowed to wear makeup, but when I was younger (maybe 11 or 12) my parents didn’t really like me wearing black lipstick, black nail polish, and heavy black eyeliner. Of course I wore it anyway!

Erin Avatar

I started “wearing” makeup after I started doing plays in 6th grade with the makeup (usually just the eyeshadow) I bought for my stage makeup. I only really wore mascara (usually brown shades) and some light brown eyeshadows until I hit college, when I got into MAC and started wearing fun shades and blush and things.

I’ve seen girls wear legitimate makeup at 8-ish (not just play lipsticks) and that just CREEPS me out. Let kids be kids!

Alix Avatar

Other than clear lip gloss, I’d say not until 15 or so. It’s awful to see beautiful little girls painting their faces in a desperate attempt to look grownup; it’s not appropriate. My 12-year-old niece wants to wear mascara and eyeliner… no way!

Kristina Avatar

When I see very young girls with makeup on, I think they look silly. I liken them to the little girls in pageants with makeup applied like a 35 year old. It just looks off.

I think a little concealer if needed, a little mascara and tinted lip balm is all a girl younger than 16 should need.

I was allowed to wear m/u at 16, but started when I was 13 (heh heh). I look back now and see I was too young.

Megan Avatar

Honestly, I don’t think you can be too young to wear makeup. I’m seventeen and have been wearing makeup since I was about eleven! The only reason I started so young was because I modeled and knowing how to apply makeup was a requirement!

Ella Avatar

I remember being really happy when my Mum let me buy my first Avon jet black eyeliner when i was thirteen…in heinsight it probably wasn’t the best idea!

Anitacska Avatar

Yes, of course there is too young for make up. I’m a mum of 2 girls (and a boy) and I certainly wouldn’t allow them to wear make up rigth now (they’re 8 1/2 and 5 1/2), and probably until they’re about 14 or so. But if they wanted to play with make up with their friends in their bedroom, I wouldn’t mind. I’ve even bought a beauty set for my eldest, but she’s not interested, lol. The closest we came to it was painting their nails (my son’s too, he’s only 3, lol) last summer.

I was about 14 when I started wearing coloured mascara, but I’d already had one or two of those cheapo 12 (or 20?) eyeshadow sets, but I only played with them at home. My Mum didn’t really say anything, only commented on me wearing dark lipsticks (a few years later) because she thought it looked ugly. But she never wore make up, so what does she know, lol. I’m actually kind of looking forward to my daughters wearing make up, I have a box of drugstore make up I don’t use much, I’d be happy for them to have it if they asked (I’m not sharing my Guerlain, Chantecaille, Dior or Mac make up with them though, lol!).

Jess0501 Avatar

i started putting on makeup when i was 12 because i did a lot of performance and i need to learn how to do it myself, or else the teacher will make us look like clowns..

Liliana Avatar

I started wearing makeup at probably 12 or 13 at get this – my mothers insistence! I HAD to wear makeup to go to church or out to family events, but not to school. It wasn’t alot what I had to wear, but my mom would not let me leave out of the house with at least lip gloss and blush on. by the time I was 15, i had to wear a full face to go out in public. lucky for me, I LOVE makeup!

Megan F Avatar

Well, from personal experience, I’m 15 and I wear makeup on a daily basis. I started gradually getting into makeup during middle school and I think it was fine to get into makeup that early, just putting on “your face” every day. I was allowed to wear makeup at an early age but I don’t think I would’ve been as obsessed with it if I hadn’t watch Youtube or go on Temptalia ; )

kate Avatar

I think there is a thing as too young for makeup on a daily basis. Kids need to be kids and in this era of so much advertising and information readily available to children there is a huge push for them to be doing very adult things too young. Let them be kids!!!

Crystal Avatar

I started when I was 15 or so. My mother said “NO WAY” until I could buy my own. Of course it was items like powder, mascara and lip gloss. I probably didn’t start wearing a full face of makeup until I started working at a makeup counter, which was 18. 🙂

Lucy H. Avatar

Well, I started to wear makeup-lip glosses, mascara and eyeshadow at around age of 14. My mum wasn’t really fan of that but she tolerated it 🙂

Dana Avatar

I started wearing makeup at age 12. I personally do not think there is a such thing as too young for makeup. It is similar to being to young for art. However, I do believe that parents do have a right to say one is too young to wear makeup. But I find it strange when a 7 year old is wearing full foundation to go to school.

Michelle Avatar

I started wearing makeup in 6th grade — my mom didn’t like it, but I bought it with my own money and wore it anyways. I have a daughter who will be 11 in a few months and going into 6th grade in the fall. I definately don’t want her wearing eye makeup at this age. Maybe sheer blush and a sheer lipgloss is all. Now when I see very young girls wearing tons of smudged black eyeliner everywhere — it just doesn’t look good (especially when they have no idea of how to apply makeup!).

Vijaya Avatar

I honestly can’t remember. By the time I was in the 7th grade, I was wearing foundation, but I often put on a little eyeshadow or lip gloss, but lipgloss didn’t count as makeup to me. In the seventh grade my mom got me foundation at a Prescriptives counter with her. Before that, makeup wasn’t specifically allowed or disallowed… the only rule was not to use my mother’s makeup (it was the nice, expensive stuff).

I, personally, don’t believe in ‘too young for makeup’. When you’re a little girl (or, sometimes, boy), these things feel like fun. As long as you make sure your child knows that they’re beautiful, makeup or no, I don’t see the harm in letting them walk around in as much makeup as they want, as ridiculously applied as they want. There’s a little girl I know who loves when I use sparkly shadow to make little hearts and stars and things on her face. Why deprive them of that? I mean, unless you get Lady Gaga’s job, there’s only so long you’re going to feel like you can get away with that in public, day-to-day.

LNU Avatar

When I was 14-16 and I usually wore eyeliner. Once I turned 16 my mom took me to MAC and bought me some studio fix powder, powder blush, and mascara. 🙂
I still wear just that everyday!
Eyeshadow isn’t an everyday thing for me. I’m all about neutrals on the days I do wear it, and only go with bright colors on special occasions.

Kelly Avatar

i wasn’t really told when i was “allowed” to wear make up, my friends always did since they were about 12 or so. I’m 16 and all i buy is mac (: i’ve got a job to pay for it, its nice getting all the latest (:

mela Avatar

my private k-12 school in the deep south would not allow girls to wear makeup to school until 7th grade. unfortunately, every girl dove into the trish counter and caked it on! MAC dubonnet was a big hit for MA 7th grade girls. no joke.

i think i started wearing makeup in 7th grade off and on, but full time, every single day to school in 9th grade. my favorites were stila shell eyeshadow and marisa lipstick.

Vonvon Avatar

As a kid, I played with my mom’s makeup from time to time. Had makeup on at school concerts when I was performing. But didn’t really get seriously involved till after I became a Mom myself, when I told myself…being a busy Mommy is no reason to put aside my own appearance and looks.

Btw, I allow my 3-year-old to play with makeup from time to time, under my supervision of course …mostly lippies, and sometimes, eyeshadows too. She likes it. and her fav is Benefit lipgloss, and green eyeshadows. Oh yea, and the “ball-ball”= Guerlain Meteorites! I know, I am a crazy Mommy…;)

Janette Avatar

I didnt wear makeup until i was 17 and it would be like glitter eyeshadow and eyeliner with mascara ( wish i coiuld take those days back with disco eyes ahh)

it wasnt until I was 18 close to 19 that I got into MAC and then i went to wearing blushes and lipsticks.

I definetly think that a pre teens shouldnt have a full face of makeup maybe mascara and gloss some blush, depends on culture really in mine at 15 you become a women and thats a qinceañera, but i didnt wear it til i was 17

Ashley Avatar

I started wearing eye liner and mascara in my freshman year of high school. I started wearing more make-up in my junior/senior year of high school.

virgg Avatar

i feel its ok to start wearing a lil makeup at 13…like mascara, eyeliner and lipgloss & when u reach highschool you can wear whatever you wish

Abi Avatar

I am 14. I have worn makeup since i was about 12.
When i was between 12-13 i would wear it occasionally and if i did it would only be eyeshadow, pressed powder and lip smackers.
Then when i was between 13-14 i would wear pressed powder, eyeshadow, clear mascara, eye primer ect. That was also when i started to watch youtube videos. I have only just (About 2-3 months ago)started to wear foundation ( mixed with a bit of moisturiser) lip gloss/stick, eyeliner mascara, UDPP ect. I use Brands such as MAC, Urban decay, Dior, Coastal scents, ELF ect And Sigma Brushes which i got last week 🙂

Haley Avatar

thank you for posting this!! I was reading all of peoples views saying, “Don’t wear makeup until your 18” etc, and I started wearing makeup when I was 12….but only clear mascara, lipgloss, and occasionally eye shadow but my teachers would get me in trouble for it! When I was about 13/14 I started wearing eye primer, eye shadow, eye liner, mascara, and sometimes mineral foundation, bronzer and blush…so I am feeling REALLY uncomfortable reading this post..

Abi Avatar

Thats ok! Reading through this post and seeing people put that you shouldnt wear makeup untill you 18 ect was makeing me feel bad too. Most the people at my school wear thick eyeliner and go through a tube of mascara in a week! So i think it is ok to wear makeup at whatever age you want as long as it is applied properly !

Steph Avatar

I had bad acne around the 6th grade, so I started wearing foundation, power, and also a bit of eyeliner at around 12/13. My parents never said anything to me, and I felt much better about myself since I could cover all the redness on my face from my acne.

Now I’m older and wear a full face every day. My skin is clear and beautiful now, so I don’t need as much foundation. But I’m glad that my parents let me wear foundation at a young age, because looking back, I would have felt even worse about myself without it. Just like those days now when I get a bad breakout…at least I have the option to put a bit more concealer & foundation to cover it up & not worry about my imperfections.

Alicia Avatar

I think most kids wear eyeliner pretty young. like maybe 13-14? I don’t see that as a big deal. Having a full face of makeup i would say 16 would be okay. I also don’t think its a big deal to put lip stick on a child for play. not on an everyday basis though!!!! Kids think its so fun to put on makeup. It needs to be minimum though.

So many moms and children come to the mac counter i work at and boys and girls both love to touch the lipsticks! They want to wear and play with them so badly!

Cacau Avatar

I’ve started using make-up with 16 years old… and only sometimes… I used an eyeshadow or a lipstick.
I’ve only started to wear foundation and stuff when I was 18…

I think girls might be too young to use make-up seriously before 13 years old.
I think it’s ok to play with make-up but using it seriously might be a way of making the child to grow up too early…

Rosie Avatar

Yes, girls want to be older for some reason. They don’t really enjoy being their age anymore. It’s all, I want an iPhone at the age of 5 and I want a DS at the age of 2. Use your imagination, kids! Leave the makeup until you’re older!

mia Avatar

i started wearing make up when i was 13 and i didn’t wear much to be honest. burt’s bees chapstick and mac eyeshadow (neutrals). sometimes if i had a bad face day i’ll wear concealer and powder but RARELY. i think its good for all girls to have there makeup era becuz its something that they work hard for to get. also makeup didn’t interfere with my studies at all so i think its a great thing to be introduced to wen ur a teenager.

Evelyn Avatar

Yes, those little girls in pageants are way too young for all that stuff slapped on them. mm Well, I went to a Catholic school that didn’t allow makeup so I didn’t really slowly start until I went to college. I kind of think it’s better to wait before you start putting stuff on your face, it can be a lot of wear & tear.

alia Avatar

um, i was 12-13 when i got into it. then at 14-15 i was allowed t wear it than now im 16 and i start buying mac and stuff and allowed to wear any look i want

Stacey Avatar

I actually started wearing foundation when I was 10-11. I had really bad acne at that age, and my mom suggested that I use foundation to reduce the teasing I got for it.
Other makeup? I wasn’t allowed for years, and my mom sold Avon!

Joan Avatar

I started when I was 13. I only wore mascara, concealer, and blush. I thought eyeliner & Eyeshadow made me look trashy if I wore it to school at that age xD

Catherine Avatar

I hit puberty pretty early, around 10 years old, and started breaking out like crazy. Around 12 years old my mom let me use some of her Clinique foundation to cover up / even out my skin. My skin looked so much better, so, from then on I never left home without it.

Also around 12 I used to get made fun of all the time for my bushy eyebrows (kids are SO mean) so that’s when I started plucking.

By the time I started high school I was still wearing foundation every day, but other than that, I don’t think I wore much. Maybe some silvery eyeshadow when I went to a school dance or something, lol. Claire’s eyeshadow! Oh and GLITTER… lots of glitter.

aramis Avatar

i started wearin eyeliner and gloss around 12 or 13 .i started waerin full makeup or heavier makeup in high school at first my mom wasnt very to happy but then i think i got used to it.

i think wearing full makeup up should be for high school or older. many girls that are in middle school havent even hit puberty. Now a days girls as young as 11 are having sex. I wouldnt be suprised if they are already wearing makeup. CHilDREN are growing up to fast!

Rose Avatar

This is a great question!
I’ve played around with makeup since I was really young. I started to wear it out in public when I was about 12 (only eyeliner and a little gloss). My first Sephora purchase was that year too- a bright pink Hard Candy lipgloss. I’ve been hooked on Sephora ever since! I’m 16 now, and I just started using foundation less than a year ago (Bare Minerals). I never wear anything too heavy.
I don’t like seeing young girls in junior high wearing makeup. All that black eyeliner and overly glossy lips just isn’t becoming. It doesn’t stop there though; that’s the look in high schools today as well.

Laura Avatar

I started wearing mascara and clear lipgloss around the age of 13 (I’m a redhead though so I look *weird* without mascara). I guess from around 14 I’ve been wearing pretty much full make up daily, but I’ve never really got properly *into* it until recently (I’m now 27, lol)!

Katie Avatar

I think before about 14/15 is too young for makeup. I see lots of girls in middle school (6th grade) who are already wearing tons of black eyeliner… I mean no one is there to tell them otherwise but I just think they’re too young to need it or know how to use it.

Katie Avatar

Oh, and I actually didn’t start wearing makeup until I was about 15 and then I only wore powder and blush. I think blush was the first makeup I ever wore. It’s still my favorite thing to put on. 🙂

Anna Avatar

I started playing around with make-up when I was ten. My mom never wore make-up, but she had some lipstick, eyeliner and mascara lying around the house. I would steal it the moment she looked away, and I remember how I coveted her pretty bronzing pearls.
I would never wear it out though, it was something I played with at home. But after some time I would start to spend my allowance on make-up, and it would be on top of my wishlist for any occasion. I remember wearing a pink cream eyeshadow for the yearbook picture when I was eleven, although I still didn’t wear it on a day to day basis.
Started wearing make-up to school on a regular basis when I was 13, but soon got allergic. That’s when I started, or rather was forced, to be really interested in make-up. I realised I couldn’t put whatever make-up on my face.

I was never told that I wasn’t allowed to wear it. My mom always saw it as something creative, rather than something I did to look “cookie cutter pretty”. And if the make-up is coming from that perspective, a creative one, then I think it’s fine. The only time I would think there’s an age that’s too early is if a child aged nine or ten would (or god forbid, even younger) wear make-up to be “pretty”. Children shouldn’t have to care for altering themselves to be pretty.

BeckBeck Avatar

I think makeup on a regular/daily basis is ok after 13 or so. I started casually wearing makeup at 13, mostly lip products and pressed powder on my nose – I have a really strong flinch reflex and couldn’t put on liner or mascara to save my life, but I remember having a Revlon shadow quad with a sort of creamy-white matte that I LOVED because it made my eyelids look totally perfect and not pink, haha.

I agree with a lot of the comments about young teens wearing a lot of eyeliner not looking good… but the Taylor Momsen look is “in” right now, and it’s really important for young girls to feel like they’re stylish and they fit in. I know I looked like a moron with my purpley-brown lipstick in seventh grade in the mid-nineties – but it was cool, and all the cool girls wore it.

Salvinia Avatar

Ugh…your comment about “purpley-brown lipstick” totally made me cringe, haha! I remember those times vividly, except my lipstick was terracotta-brown! I’m so glad colour is in again…

Jackers Avatar

About 14/15, but I always loved playing with it when I was even younger. Once I decided I wanted to wear it my mom actually took me shopping to pick some stuff out, which was a great bonding experience and fun! I think around 13 is alright, but it’s important to let your daughter know that she’s gorgeous as is too, my mom always told me how pretty I was and that went a long way. She also made a point of telling me that since I was so young I didn’t need a whole lot of makeup anyway; just a little concealor, blush, mascara, etc.

Carolina Avatar

I do think there is such a thing as too young for makeup. Obviously dabbling in it is part of the fun when you’re growing up, but regularly going out with a full face of makeup before 15/16 is not appropriate in my opinion.
As for me, since my mother has never, nor does now wear any makeup, my interest in makeup was always very low. It wasn’t until my younger sister started using it, that I acquired some interest. It’s still something I wear very rarely (full face or otherwise), but I’ve become more proficient at it. I still am, and think I will always be, too lazy to bother, unless it’s a party. lol I do like seeing all the products and Christine’s looks, but only to admire from afar. 😀

Evelyn Avatar

i’m 14 and to skool say..i’d wear mascara, lip balm and sometimes a little smudged eyeliner..nothing major. but i really started getting into makeup last year although i did not wear any 2 skool just on weekends etc. but i’m just getting into MAC(its soo exciting!!) but i do not wear foundation because as i’ve seen other peoples mistakes(too orange, cakey etc.) i do not to risk the ‘cheeto’ but i have ok skin so i do not need wear it.period! but just reading some of the comments below some people are not in touch with young people 2day…sayin we do not remove makeup or cleanse or moistureize….i remove all makeup every night and cleanse and moisturize every morning and evening….back to the point i think 12 is the VERY youngest girls should be wearing makeup and only a bit of mascara at that. By the way, I lovveee ur blog/website Christine and find it very helpful!!

Rosie Avatar

I get kinda disgusted when I see moms buying makeup for young girls. I mean as a dress up day it’s cool, when you’re little you like to resemble your mom but to wear out for reals all the time, that’s just really messed up. That’s why our girls grow up with all these false notions of beauty and how they should look. It’s not just the makeup they’re looking at in the magazines/tv, it’s the image that woman sells. I think girls should wait until they’re in high school, whether it’s 14 or 15 and start slow, it’s sad to see young girls looking like clowns or like they’re 22 when they’re really 16 or something.

Nic Avatar

There is definitely such a thing as being too young for makeup…I just don’t know what age. I think I started wearing a little makeup for special occasions when I was 13. By 14, I was pretty good at applying makeup, but only rarely wore more than sheer shadow and a little gloss (Lust Lipglass was my color of choice). I guess 16 was when I started to really get into building my makeup collection and improving my technique. I wore makeup very often then – pretty dramatic, too, but I don’t think it was over the top.

Yep, I was allowed to wear makeup. Didn’t have to sneak it or anything. Did I start too young? Probably a little. It may depend on the person, but I’d say 16 is probably a reasonable age to start wearing makeup.

Gabsta Avatar

I was a make up late bloomer due to being counted as ‘one of the boys’ and not really having any girlfriends.

I started wearing make up about two years ago when I was 28.

Marjolijn Avatar

I started playing with makeup when I was about six. My sister and I did each other’s makeup and we were very creative with all the colours 😛 green and blue for blush, no problem! Luckily, I learned which colours are appropriate for which part of the face after a while 🙂 I started wearing a bit of makeup when I was 12 or so, just mascara and some subtle cream eye shadow.I never wore any really bold makeup so luckily it didn’t look tacky 🙂 My parents didn’t mind, I think my mum actually liked my experimenting. And now I advise her on her makeup 😛
I think you should be allowed to play a bit with makeup as a kid, it’s just fun 🙂 but it’s a good idea to take it off before you get out of the house ’cause it might look a bit strange. Kids shouldn’t worry about beauty so I think they shouldn’t use concealer and powder and stuff like that. I think 12 is a good age to start wearing a bit of makeup, but a full face application would be too much. 15 would be a good age to start experimenting with the whole “arsenal” as I like to call it 🙂

Iliana Avatar

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with experimenting with makeup when you’re young but it’s another issue altogether when a child feels like she needs to wear it already or to feel like you can’t leavr ghe housd wighou anyghing kn uour face. That being said, i guess 15 is a safe age (for me!) to start wearing lip/cheek tints/stains. I refer to these products specifically because they’re low maintenance and i think even 15yr olds shouldn’t have to be conscious of their skin that much. I started wearing makeup seirously only when i was 23, two years ago, and even then i don’t want to be too fussy about it. 🙂

iliana Avatar

OMIGOD I TOTALLY DIDN’T MAKE ANY SENSE. Sorry Christine and those who might have viewed it. It was 530 in the morning and I was typing on my phone. 🙁 I meant to say:

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with experimenting with makeup when you’re young but it’s another issue altogether when a child feels like she needs to wear it already or to feel like you can’t leave the house without anything on your face.

Annie Avatar

I started wearing lots of black eyeshadow and eyeliner at 13 – I went through a rocker phase, haha. But I still do think that’s around the right time to start wearing make-up, though not as much as I did! At my high school, most girls just wear mascara and lip gloss, and sometimes eyeliner. I think from 13 up, you should be allowed to do what you want, as long as you do it right! I’m fifteen now, I like bright eye shadows, but will also have days on which I wear only mascara or even nothing at all!

I think it depends on how much you worry what you look like. I wear make-up because I like to, and not because I feel I need to “hide behind a mask”.

Riley Avatar

I started wearing make up in the 6th grade so that means…. that i was 11! but I only used cover up and lip gloss then because I was a really early bloomer so I had a zit problems since 4th grade and I would always get picked on so my mom was nice enough to let me use it :]]

Haylie Avatar

I started to wear mascara freshman year and eyeliner occasionally. Sophomore year is when I really got into everything like foundation, concealer, eyeshadow etc. So like when I was 15.

Haylie Avatar

I had never touched makeup before I my freshman year. Only my mom’s Clinique mini mascara samples that didn’t do anything to your lashes anyways. 🙂

Alyssia Avatar

I used to play with my mums makeup when I was 12 – I’d put on moisturiser and a little lipgloss. When I was 13 I was given a cheap eyeshadow pallette – simple pastel colours that I played with from time to time, and rarely wore it out. Makeup then didn’t interest me untill I was about 15, when I started wearing mascara and eyeliner to school. I didn’t wear foundation (tinted moisturiser actually) untill I was 17, and discovered liquid eyeliner. It wasn’t untill I was 19 that I really got into the creativity of make-up and over the last few years I’ve got a nice sized stash of makeup!

In terms of my own children (when the time comes) I think from 12-16 very natural makeup is ok, as in a light application of mascara, natural blush and a little tinted gloss. From 16 up I think experimentation with eyeshadow colours, coloured liners and light foundation etc is ok, as long as it is done tastefully.

Jaylyn Avatar

I think you’re never too young for lipgloss and nail polish. I think you can add eyeliner to the mix in 7th grade. Anything else can wait until high school.

Tantawan Avatar

I’m 13 years old and I wear makeup, I started to wear it about last summer and bought MAC and other high end makeup. There was a time where I started breaking out soo much and wore liquid foundation to cover it, now I just wear MSF Natural, Black Mascara, Lipgloss, Lipstick, and Blush and it looks pretty natural. I don’t go too big and wear eyeshadow and eyeliner though.

Gretchen Avatar

When a girl turns 13, I think it’s fine to wear some mascara and lipgloss, but anyone younger than that shouldn’t even worry about it. However, I think some Bonnebell Lip Smackers are just fine for girls that are elementary school age. Anything other than that is a NO.

Cindy :P Avatar

I don’t actually think there is. I remember when I was a little girl I played around with my mom’s makeup and it was lots of fun!! There’s always something for everyone! Now, if we’re talking about wearing makeup on a daily basis…then I think girls younger than 13-15 would be too young…unless we’re talking about some random pink lipgloss…that’s pretty on anyone 🙂

Angelica Avatar

I’m 15 and am just now allowed to wear make-up. However, i was aloud to wear like lipgloss before 15, and I’m not aloud to wear foundation now.

Court Avatar

I think it’s the intensity of the make up. I have no problem with a 5 year old playing with lip stick or gloss and maybe mascara but I don’t they should be wearing full face make up. I started wearing foundation, mascara and eyeliner when I was 13. It looked natural so it wasn’t really a big deal. And I really only started wearing eyeshadow when I was about 18, I just had no interest until then.

Kripa Avatar

I think anything younger than junior high (about 12/13), is too young. When I was in 6th grade, all I wore was lip smackers lip gloss. I bought black kohl eyeliner, but I rarely wore it. In 7th grade, I still didn’t really care about makeup and only wore it on picture day (eyeliner on the waterline and lipgloss). 8th grade was when I started to get a little more interested in makeup, and wore eye liner (on the waterline), mascara, and lip gloss if I had extra time in the morning. Now, I’m a freshman in high school and I love makeup. I really started to get into it when I discovered beauty blogs (like Temptalia) and the makeup community on youtube. I wear eyeliner, mascara, eyeshadow, blush, bronzer, and lip gloss. It sounds like a lot, but it’s applied lightly, and I make sure to take everything off at night. Even though I don’t wear that much, I own quite a bit of makeup. I like to experiment with colors and get better at application techniques. There are girls at my school that know how to apply their makeup, yet they do it to the extreme. They look like they got punched in the eye or they have on oompa loompa makeup. In that case, I think someone would just need an intervention. This is a great question, and great job Christine!! This site is amazing. 🙂

Ann Avatar

I work at the mall and all those little girls with makeup on give me the creeps. Seriously? Especially with those middle school girls and their black eyeliner ONLY on the lower lashline. What is that. No. Just no. Or bright pink lipstick and nothing else. And their mothers condoning it.
Freaks me out. It may be your choice when and how you want to wear your makeup, just know it freaks other people out.

Shannon Avatar

I began wearing mascara and liner when I was 12. I first got contacts after wearing glasses since I was 11 months old, so I got carried away with the liner 😛

Miche Avatar

Personally I didn’t start really wearing any makeup until I was 18. Before that I had this super hectic schedule where I had sports every day for a minimum 2 hrs so it just didn’t make sense. I think I probably wore mascara and chap stick/lip gloss and that’s about it (it’s where my love for “bomb proof” mascara comes from; my look had to survive field hockey/soccer/volleyball/swimming/basketball/track etc.).

As for what age is appropriate for children I think I would depend on the product and the child’s attitude towards it; it disturbs me when people of any age say they NEED makeup when it’s playing and having a creative outlet its fine so long as it isn’t garish. I am of the belief one should be introduced to makeup gradually maybe 10 for lip gloss, 12 for lip stain, 13 for mascara, 16-18 for eyeliner/eye shadow/blush, and foundation & facial products whenever appropriate; if a 14 year old had acne I wouldn’t deprive her of concealer, foundation & powder but they aren’t something I would really consider age based, they seem to be more need based if you don’t need them you don’t wear them! Obviously people would probably play at home or for special occasions before this but I’m talking for every day wear.

The only thing I think is fine for younger kids is hair removal. If a child has a unibrow or something I am perfectly fine with someone plucking that. Or alternatively if they have gorilla hairy legs or arms I wouldn’t see anything wrong with waxing if the child was self conscious.

Also despite thinking there is an age that is ‘too young for makeup’ I don’t think twice if I see a child with dyed hair come to think of it.

Kalee Avatar

yeah i hear ya about the hair dye thing…..im a hairdresser and it bothers me sooo much to see kids under the age of ..at least 13 to have their hair colored. they dont need it!!!! ARGH!!! its too young to start damaging your hair and keeping up with it. and these parents dont give a fying f***. someone came in with her daughter 2 weeks ago so they both can have foil h/l on the top and she was 10. still in elementary school. i told her i couldnt because she was too young. the little girl threw a hissy fit and that goes to show right there she was too young. lol. and i’ve seen a 5 year old with pink streaks, a somewhat 6 year old with bright yellow, (yes, yellow) steaks in the front.
its ridiculous. and looks stupid.
sorry about the long post i had to vent….. =\

Megan Avatar

i was 14 when i started wearing makeup and then around 15 i really got into it (addicted…). But I was actually one of the “Late makeup bloomers” in my school because I stared wearing makeup in high school, where some of the girls in my school started in 5th and 6th grade (i am guessing that is 10, 11, and 12 years old) i personally think that is way to young…but it is all personal choice

rose Avatar

i think when your 12 & 13 is a good time to start playing around with make up little by little and as you get older, you will be more experienced.

Nikki Avatar

Well, I discovered watermelon Bonnebell lipgloss at 11, I went through at least a couple of tubes at that age. In junior high I would wear blue or pink eyeshadow every now and then. Then I started high school and had a friend who wore foundation, powder, eyeliner, etc.; so of course I had to start! I had(and still have) really bad acne so I liked the way the foundation covered it, and I was going through a punky phase so I wore horrible amounts of black eyeliner. After a while, though, I only wore foundtion, powder, light blush and mascara. That is until early last summer, when at 20 I discovered Youtube beauty gurus. I now love eyeshadow and lipcolor, and go more for high-end brands.

I think nail polish and Bonniebell type lipgloss is fine for preteens, and mascara, neutral eyeshadow and light blush for young teens, maybe foundation if there’s a need for it. But I think once you hit 16 you can do whatever you wish.

Marta Fernandes Avatar

Well, I don’t think there’s anything wrong with wearing makeup at a young age, unless it’s bad for the child’s skin that is.
However, I personally don’t like to see children wearing makeup. I find those girls who compete in children beauty pageants to be really creepy. I don’t dislike it on teenagers as long as they don’t look like prostitutes (unfortunately they often do).

AnaA Avatar

I’m Portuguese too. I noticed you talking about how you’d got a Maybelline lipstick on Ebay because they don’t sell that shade in Europe. That and the name gave you away 😛

Megan Avatar

I’ve been wearing a full face of make-up since I was four, only because I was a competitive skater. And anyone who was a dancer, skater, etc. knows how much makeup is involved with that. Because of that early age I actually grew to hate makeup and never wore it, until i rediscovered the beauty of it at 23 and two years later I am just as obsessed

Mai-Huong Avatar

I’m sixteen actually, and I just started getting into makeup several months ago. I have to say that I’m getting obsessed! I mainly just go for some colorful eyeshadow used as liner for school; I really love using bright colors. What I’ve seen among my own friends is that most of us are just experimenting at this stage – most of us accept the fact that we really have no idea what we’re doing (and that it’s all right!). Most of the girls at my school just mainly use black mascara and black pencil liners, which definitely makes my colored eyeliner stand out a bit (haha!).

Lila Avatar

I started getting horrible acne at age 11, & so i wore foundation.
But even then makeup wasnt to cover up it was just how i expressed myself. I loved color, it made me who I was.
I think makeup can be used minimally on anyone at any age.
It really depends on what its for..

Jess Avatar

Well when i was 9 my mom gave me this frosty pink lipstick (kinda looked like “Sandy B” by MAC,which is my fav lipstick b.t.w lol) and she would let me wear that on ‘special occasions’ you know friend’s party’s,sleepover’s typical nine year old stuff.i started wearing eyeliner and mascara at 14(it took a lot of fights with my mom for her to let me haha) and started to wear eyeshadow, blush etc.. last year at 17.But Honestly anyone younger than 14 is too young for makeup, they should be at least a freshman in highschool.

Kath Avatar

makeup is intended for people who want to look prettier, younger or to make certain statements (on-stage/fashion/dance)..

for under 16 makeups are not necessary coz makeup essentially age them.. unless when in photo shoots or evening events, they may use some pink gloss..

there’re harmful ingredients in most makeups that may cause breakout and irritation. some even make skin more sensitive.. not recommended.

Diana Avatar

Within reason 🙂 I think I started around 13 with sheer lipglosses, etc. I went through an eyeshadow/lipgloss crazy shades around 16 I think…

The full face I see some junior high kids sporting creeps me out a bit. Not as much as beauty pageant makeup though.

stacystatik Avatar

I started wearing foundation and powder at 11 mainly because a 11 ( yes 11) I had a very very bad case of cystic acne like the kind of pimples so big and painful and embarrassing that the only was to get rid of them was with cortisone shots, and 120 dollar cremes. at 11 i was having hormone tests done and everything. I think that’s ok i wasn’t wearing eyeshadow or lipstick of liner i just wore base because honestly if i hadn’t i prob would have been made fun of much much more then i already was 🙁 and would have had much much worse low self esteem,

Erica Avatar

My mom allowed me to start wearing makeup in Junior High (7th grade – I was 12). It was also ummm…1988-1989 (where big hair, blue eyeshadow and frosted lips was a normal everyday look for women- LOL!). But I *wanted* to wear make up – – and I was really only allowed drugstore makeup. I had a pretty crazy first year of makeup, I would wear everything I had all at once – but by the time I was 14, I was strictly a powder, mascara and gloss girl – and largely was all through high school. I didn’t even discover MAC until I was in college in 1996 and didn’t start wearing a full face, everyday until I was in my mid 20’s.
I think it depends on the girl, and depends on her circumstances. I think a 10 year old is ready for some lipgloss on special occasions. Also, a lot of girls start “developing” around 10-11-12-ish. So I think with getting your first bra and falling for boys, I think makeup is sort of a natural progression. And as long as parents and other family members reassure these younger girls that they are smart and talented and beautiful without fancy clothes and high heels and makeup, I think an interest in makeup at age 11-12 is perfectly fine.

Sarah Avatar

I had very bad acne since I was about 8 years old, so when I was around 12 I started wearing sheer foundation just to try to even out the redness and make the blemishes a little less obvious. I added brown eyeliner and lipgloss around 15, but I didn’t start really getting into makeup until I was 19.

Lisa Avatar

When I was little my parents didn’t let me wear makeup either! I would ALWAYS sneak wearing to to school. I wore this horrendous deep deep wine lipstick to school in the 7th grade and theres a picture of me in it in the yearbook, but my parents always let me wear lip gloss. I think that I was actually allowed to wear makeup when I was 14-15ish around the end of my freshmen year, I think.

Nicole Avatar

I had really bad skin throughout high school, so I regularly wore concealer.
At 17 I wore mascara, blush, eyeshadows for the first time.

my sister at 13 wanted to wear eyeliner and that. It looked so weird and wrong. At least she hasn’t gotten into anything else yet, and is 15 now.

Brooke Avatar

I wasn’t really “allowed” to wear make-up until I was about 14…but up until that point I would hide my makeup (hand-me-downs and samples that my older cousin had given me) in my backpack and put it on at the bus stop before school. Of course it was always the heavy, electric blue eyeshadow and glitter gel in the eyebrows! haha! Did anyone else every fall victim to this trend? It was all the rage in my middle school…looking back now I looked REDICULOUS!!! It’s fun to see how much I’ve grown with my beauty looks though!

Kalee Avatar

havent you seen toddlers & tiaras?!!!! =(
YIKES!!!! SCARY!!!!

i think once your in highschool its ok. but not doing crazy things with it. anything younger than that not really.
i started in 8th grade, i was 13 but i only wore a little lipgloss and mascara..a LITTLE. some of my friends wore more than me but they looked like crap because they didnt really know how to use it correctly.

Sharon Avatar

My mother sold cosmetics for a long time, starting when I was about ten — not Avon, but some other brand that people could order from her, and then in my later teens she sold Vanda Beauty Counselor. I remember showing up for school in seventh grade with my eyelids covered in bright blue eyeshadow and having several girls tell me the “right” way to wear it, heehee. But I never wore much makeup until I was about sixteen; before that it was just some lipgloss, barely-there eyeshadow and maybe some mascara.

Jess Avatar

I’m 14 and most girls in my school and the high school wear makeup every single day. You don’t reallly know though until u see people without make up on.

Anna Avatar

I’m currently 12 years old and all I wear is some mascara and a little bit of eyeliner. I am starting to collect makeup but I don’t really wear it and probably won’t till about 16.

Elle Avatar

I started wearing eyeliner at 13, I’m 15 now and it’s still all the makeup I wear.
I think people under 17 shouldn’t wear makeup, except eyeliner or some lip balm but thats it.

Annie xxx Avatar

You are NEVER too young to wear make up – as long as its your decision then its fine to put as much or less on as you want! Its your own face – you can do what you like with it!
I’ve been wearin FULL make up since I was 11 years old. At about the age of 10 i would wear mascara, eyeshadow, foundation and lipgloss. But by the time I was 11 I was wearing foundation, powder, bronzer, concealer (aswell as on blemishes/spots on my lips!), coverstick, eyebrow cake, eyebrow pencil, eye pencil, liquid liner, eyeshadow, lipgloss, lip liner and tint. I was even applying fake tan to my legs sometimes as I am SOOOOOOO pale. Most people are probably thinking: oh my bloody god she was wearing all that at 11 and is still wearing it all years later but to me its to do with my self confidence. From a young age I never really felt confident speaking infront of people and by following the latest fashions, make up, hair done, nails painted, tan done and perfume on etc it was my way of regaining that confidence and feeling good about myself – to be honest my mum never minded – she just wanted me to be happy and be myself – and the whole thing of caring about my looks so much is me – if you took all that away from me a big part of me would be missing! I can’t go out the house without make up – I’m not ashamed to tell people that – cos thats me. Thats who I am and if people don’t like it they just have to deal with it – in my school years I would always get into trouble for wearing it but I would just rebel against it! When I was told to go the toilets and wash it off I would go and put more on! It dosen’t affect you on the inside, your learning ability/working ability so why is there such a huge deal mad about it????!!!!!

Well.if we count in those “play with make-up”,my first time is 4. It’s insane. I know. But I was a dancer and hostess, so you kinda need to wear those heavy ones in performances. But back at that time, my teacher, couch and sometimes MUA did my make-up: Pale foundation, heavy loose power, crazy purple eyeshadow, and yes, red lips.

Last time I replied here that I started wearing make-up like around 17, but that’s actually the time I started doing everyday make-up. But then I realized it’s not. Later in my choir days, we put on make-up by ourself for performance. So I’ll say 12.

So I guess I have seen kid aged 10 doing their own make-up. Guess it’s way too early for everyday make-up, but come on, there’s nothing as too young to do it for performance make-up, I guess.

Yes, kids who wear A. Winehouse eyeliner aged 12 scared me, too.
